Ring locks are common in Germany, but Abus and Axa locks are not even a little bit as badly made as this one.
I have exactly these locks on both of my shopping/cargo bikes. They are great for quick and convenient locking when riding from store to store. They retail for as little as 5 bucks here in Germany.
That's the kind of lock I saw on rental bikes 45 years ago in Japan. Anybody stealing them would just pick them up, throw them in the back of a van, and worry about the lock when they got to their workshop.
I suspect most bikes are stolen by someone seeing an unlocked bike and deciding it is easier than walking home

I have been watching the bikes left behind on my university campus.Bikes with these types of locks are the only ones who stay for longer then 6 months after being left.The Abus chain locks have a nice second place.

People stealing in Japan? Weird. Anyways, this is just a secondary level lock IE, something you use along with another lock. Think of it as a caliper lock to a motorcycle.
In Then Netherlands it's like a standard lock often from factory, there are different types of cores, old ones could be opened with a flat screwdriver

You can open cheap bycicle locks with a scissor
This is either broken or a very dangerous lock. You need to twist the key in order to be able to begin closing. Twisting also releases.
Where I live, in The Netherlands, most are made by AXA. Type 3 and 5 are opened with a mother key that some criminals do have and therefore inadvisable. Type 7 and up do not function with one key anymore and are save. New ones are attached to a ground plate and difficult to remove from the bike. I remember they challenged the crowd in opening one when I was a kid. We found out later, hardened steel shatters to pieces when hit hard enough. Still it is a must have because with a chain and lock one steals the frame from one bike and the front wheel from another. People turn the bike around in order to break locks or they cut them. So an AXA lock is on the bike when you buy one. It was a surprise most of the popular ones and most advertised were to be opened with one and the same key.
And to think they are actually made in the Netherlands!

In Denmark 60 years ago they had one similar, but instead of a key way there was a button where the writing is on this lock. You moved it up/down and sideways in a plus + movement a certain number of times to open it.

In the Netherlands this comes standard on a bike usually AXA or ABUS brand, mandatory when insuring a bicycle.
For the insurance, the key retaining thing is important. So is the solid mounting to the bike. It means that if you can show all the keys, they can be pretty sure that the bike was actually locked up. With a U lock or chain, even if it’s key retaining, all they know is that was locked to *something*.
I have never heard of bike insurance in the netherlands. But then again I'm more used to places like Eindhoven where there is sort of an "open market" when it comes to bikes

I just use my W rake for wafer locks at work. I love it, I've got pretty handy with it. Most wafer locks that have been used regularly will give up in a few rakes. Vehicle canopies and garage door/roller door locks people bring me mostly. Make keys to this for me. No problem. The cylinders are usually easier to remove in the open/partly open position. Worst case if you cant get it open you have to read it visually. Usually only the ones that require special core removal keys give me this problem though.
My old bike had a lock like this, but with an Abloy Ava core. I wish they still made those.

There was a very similar lock to this one back in the 90s sold in Eastern Europe under ...uh the name escapes me, something like bamis or bramis bike, anyways, the lock looked substantially beefier and was mounted in the rear brake with (and this is one of the key differences) an angled plate to offset and help with the fact that the fact that the lock body was so big.
I also remember that the 'blister' also boasted that the lock body worked as a brake stiffener as well. Kinda want to find one again, i scrapped mine after i lost the keys to it, they seemed like decently made with a well defined key (not the cheapo ones you usually see in low to middle level entry bike things).
Man in Sweden we got those on every other bike.. You have an Okej lock there.. Why?
Because people don't usually pick shit and go for the big master key right away.
So they let th lock alone often when it connects the back wheel.
Totally okey for keeping the main crock away over here in Sweden actually, believe it or not..
its also a great stand for the bike. lock it up and rest the bike at a pole ore even with the pedal on a sidewalk stone.
i totally love this product, but i never would use it to lock up a bike that is not in my arms range😏
i just can bend it open with bare hands if i ever lost the key.
Used to have one that was a combination lock,it had a reflector that could move N-S-E-W to open, if I find it, I will send it to you
AXA/Basta made these with factory combinations.
I have an old bike lock thats pin tumbler with a crazy paracentric key way. It took me wayy longer to pick that then the new defiant mortis lock i just got...
i have actually seen locks like this on bikes in seattle. they are for the bike sharing bikes from the different bike sharing companies. the ones on the bike are electronicly controlled. they are also timed. after the amount of time u have road the bike for has expired the lock will lock the wheel in place. also with those bikes if the bike is about to expire in time and you dont pay for another hour the bike will worn you to pay or they will call the police. strange thing

Those are not mounted on expensive goods - just regular urban bicycles.
and it mostly stops someone from deciding that unlocked bike is easier than walking home, which is probably most of the bikes stolen

Even the cheapest Gazelle or Batavus will cost $7-800, a high end one would be more than $2k and that's ignoring their e-bikes.

Probably a poor quality key to go with a cheap lock that sits in the elements every day, given it is designed to attach to the bike frame. Eventually the lock starts seizing up and that is your result, a bent key. Not once but TWICE I have managed to snap the key to my bike lock while trying to open it. Thankfully the first time was at a shopping centre so I just went and bought some bolt cutters then casually "stole" my bike in a very busy public area. No one batted an eyelid to my surprise and dismay. Shows you can't rely on people to keep an eye on your bike. Lesson learned too, I use a decent quality Krypto or a padlock and chain these days.

That style of ring lock is used with some electronics in the "shared" use bikes rented by the hour in Dallas. Can't say about other cities.
The average north American bike thief wouldn't know what the heck one of these things is.
that type of lock is standard on the bicycle's here where the are common af. it stops random people taking your bike but the people stealing bikes will roll up in a van and lift... now there are ton's of crappy one's that aren't worth stealing but if you want your bike to be there when you get back you better attach it to something solid

bosnianbill I notice this as well. 4:00 it's pretty clearly making a sort of scratching noise as you talk with the lock in hand. Using low end earbuds and a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phone...
Dunno if it's the same noise King is picking up, but I'm getting a distinct sound in some places in the video, most notably around 4:50 - 5:10 and it sounds kinda like brushing against the microphone with something hard, that kind of metal on plastic sound.
I hear it through mobile phone speaker pretty much from the beginning.

I have to wonder if the reason these aren't common in the US is just due to the prevalence of large automobiles around here, any would-be bike thief can just take a bike that's got a wheel lock on it and load it into a van, pickup truck, or a vehicle mounted bike rack, without even removing the lock.
These are called "cafe locks" - I call them "taco truck locks". In the USA they're really only good for low-security situations like running into a store or - again - taking your eyes off of your bike for a minute as you order your burrito al pastor.
It would cost almost nothing to add braze-ons to city bike seat stays in the factory in order to make installation of these a piece of cake. Note that most dockless bike share bikes use a beefy, high-tech version of this.
On standard city bikes, these are directly attached to the bolts that hold the luggage rack. Undoing those bolts still leaves the lock trapped by the frame, yet is the standard way to replace an open lock.
I think ive seen something like this that attaches to the frame/front forks so its always on the bike. of course id use a kevlar wrapped chain, and a tough pad lock to lock it to a permanent structure.

Dunno if it is mentioned yet but this is el-cheapo bike lock. Most A-brand locks have slightly better cores.
The most expensive are Axa locks, they can also be raked fairly easy

It is actually easier when mounted on the bike because tie keyway is aligned perfectly for access - kind of like being mounted in a vise. But, unless you are very short, you'll have to work while on your knees...
Those locks are a pain in the b*tt when you need to remove it the destructive way. I've lost multiple keys on such locks.. And I hate them. Now I have an mountainbike with fat-ass cable lock... Haven't tried to pick it yet.
UPDATE: it worked!! I have the AXA 17-08 lock, and used one of those double sided "car" picks. It took me less than 3 minutes and had only changed 1 pick.
I rarely leave my bike out of sight when I take out out but I usually put a 3/8"steel cable with my repinned brinks knock off of an American lock and anchor it to my truck something would be severely damaged and all the mountain bikers I know look out for each other

I strongly suspect that these are vulnerable to a technique shown by Barry Wels of Toool in 2007 that was for Axa and Abus locks of almost identical design. Vulnerable locks are opened in the space of a couple of seconds.
A blank key that fits the lock is inserted, tension applied & the key swiftly withdrawn from the keyway. The effectively takes & opens the lock.

Forgot to mention that many other wafer locks are vulnerable to this technique. It seems to have a lot to do with keyhole geometry - a lock with a mirror-image keyway to an otherwise identical that opens easily with this technique will often be much less vulnerable. Such a lock will invariably be vulnerable if the key can be turned in the opposite direction to open the lock.

You know that's why Master's rating system is screwy. It counts having a pin-tumbler instead of a wafer as "enhanced picking resistance"
Some of the latest automotive locks are still wafer locks and among the most secure. It's not the wafer lock itself, but the quality of it.

skygh you can open alot of locks with a half snowman. Mainly to get a false set and then also to pick the spools. Does not always work because of biting and keyways but it does work.

so what ? throw the pedal bike in the back of a van or a pickup and take it away then hack the lock off with an angle grinder in your workshop at your leisure

Wow that is a shitty lock :/ I have a simillar one vom Abus with an attached chain and even then i only use it as a secondary lock.
