Last week we took a look at what I felt were some of the most underrated characters in the franchise. Now it's time to take a look at my MOST OVERRATED characters, Annnnnnd uhhhhhhh....yeeeeahhhhhh. I have to agree with you in all of these, although I feel Lance isn't overrated in the same way as the others. To me it feels like Lance is overrated by GAMEFREAK, not by the fans. It feels like they want to push him on us and makes us like him, but didn't give him enough stuff to do outside of battles to differentiate him from the others. The only version I actually love is the Adventures manga one.
The adventues manga makes a lot of characters better hence Red for example

Honestly I really hated Leon in the games. If I had a pokédollar for every time someone mentions how he's undefeated or unbeatable, I could buy a bicycle in gen 1

The Pokemon Generations series made me like Leon more. They made him badass with a more mature appearance and deeper voice.
Leon sucks in anime as well. A random guy with a charmendar as his starter who was somehow able to never get defeated.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Alain or Tobias is on such a list as well, given how salty people are about Ash losing to them both.
.............Okay, maybe not Alain as much as Tobias, but they both are the 2 loses Ash has had that people are still to this day the most hung up over, even after all these years

Heads up: this is gonna be a bit long, but I do it because Mystic’s right and I love the character.
As much as I, Mystic, and millions of others adore Serena, those critiques are valid. Admittedly, the contests were pretty boring, but not to the point where I wouldn’t watch them, more so to the point where I just thought they were lacking something to differentiate themselves a bit from showcases and get me a little more invested in them. However, while I am definitely bias, one of the main arguments I hear about Serena is that “she hardly/never experienced any problems.” To me, it was more internal than external struggle, and multiple articles regarding this topic will say that. Serena has difficulties coming to terms with herself, and her rivals and-or friends accentuate that. Like all the times Miette teased Serena to make a move on Ash before it was too late, even if it was friendly teasing, and then some may say Shauna was better in the showcases than her in most instances. Also, the way she broke down crying upon that realization was heartbreaking (and it was incredibly wholesome how Fennekin and Pancham comforted her), which many will argue is the reason she cut her hair - to try and let go of that tension (just saying that makes me realize that I still love the short hair but miss the long hair). At the end of the day, she is overrated, but deserves to be as much as the XY anime in general. And it may just be because the XY anime has always been high on my list as one of, if not, the best group of seasons in the franchise, but next to Greninja, Serena is incredibly well-written, and it makes her everlasting praise warranted.
For me they are pretty overrated in the community but that doesn't mean that just they are overrated means they are bad in reality ....they are very well written characters to be honest

Speaking as someone who plays the games and nothing else, Cynthia is easily the most overrated. She's boring as all hell personality wise, does barely anything in the story and only gets a pass because she's mildly harder than most other champions.
Boring ? Thats yiur opinion probably you were just skiping when she talks to the protagonist

Also love how you couldn't give me an example of what so interesting about Cynthia aside from "strong champion who likes to battle" and instead accuse me of skipping her dialogue because you can't come up with anything.

@@GatorOne-in7hk In Ultra sun and Moon, the battle to decide the 1st champion of the aloha league is between you and Hau. Therefore I count him as the champion fight of USUM.
So what? The champions ranked here are based on Strength, with an emphasis on the games. She’s by far more challenging than every other champion & easily defeats anyone she’s up against on screen in the anime
I agree completely that Leon really isn’t as strong as the lore claims he is. His team may be better than Diantha’s, but due to how overly generous Sword and Shield are with experience points, he’s extremely easy to beat, with the only ones that gave me any trouble being Dragapult and Charizard. Cynthia’s strength is so much more believable from both the games and anime perspectives.
Thats pretty consistent with what I've heard on both sides of the spectrum on Gen 8, I've still yet to be interested in it! So I'm also p much in total agreeance lol
His Charizard isn’t even a problem either because you just have water type use Max Geyser to set up rain and Charizard can’t do anything about it because his signature G-Max move doesn’t set up sunny day like Max Flare does.

In Anime he is the strongest but the games cynthia is best
Surprised that Cynthia isn’t here. Despite Leon being ranked above her lore wise, people still say that she is/should be the strongest simply because of the video games. I get she was hard in there but the difficulty in the games is dependent on factors such as ai, evs etc things that aren’t present in the anime. The Cynthia fans need to realise this so they can handle her inevitable loss better. It’s been established MANY times that game strength does not equal anime strength, y’all will hype up a pikachu taking down legendaries and pseudo-legendaries and thunder bolting ground types but can’t accept that someone being difficult in the games does not mean they’re that strong in the anime/lore.
Well leon is the monarch just because he is introduced as a champion at the same time as the pwc
He will probably get outclassed on the next seasons by older and newer characters

It’s because she’s not overrated lol. She’s powerful in the games as well as the anime. Her strength is consistent. The AI argument is irrelevant, that’s a factor in any Pokémon game. She has one of the most well rounded teams and is a monster in both her original games and the remakes, 14 years later
@@diaabnasir471 she’s powerful in terms of level but in story she lets a 10 year with 7 badges fight a Pokémon that can create universes. Leon takes it up on himself to address the major problems in galar and even tells the player character that he will handle it because HE’s the champion

The thing that annoyed me with the Kalos contests is that they made it clear that only girls could do it. If guys could do contests in Hoenn and Sinnoh (and I think Johto too), why not Kalos?
i completely agree, it just adds to gender roles which, seeing as it is aimed to kids, can be very unhealthy for them
I feel like armourshipping took up way too much of Serena’s character. Like, having a crush is fine, but it felt like it became a main personality trait. It sucks though, she had the potential to be really interesting

I prefer may and dawn over serena. I enjoyed contests more than showcases and they were just hilarious
I 100% agree! Plus the showcases were boring I would have liked her better if she just did contests from the start plus the fact she broke down after losing one competition seemed a little unrealistic to me compared to dawn breaking down after losing in the first round multiple times plus Serena wasn’t dead set on showcases. I think having her lose a couple then having her breakdown and get better and winning them would have been a better payoff in my opinion.

She's strong, sure, but so many people (including you clearly, since you kept comparing others to her) treat her like she's the holy grail of Pokémon trainers, when she's really nothing special.
I lost the champion battle against her in BDSP, but then i won on the second try. There have been plenty of other trainers in the series that have given me, and a lot of others, way more trouble.
I'm not saying she doesn't deserve praise, she absolutely does, but you people seriously need to stop treating her like a goddess.
Edit: Unlike some other champions, like Leon and Lance (both of which you called overrated btw), Cynthia bearly helps the player take down the evil team/legendary pokémon.
In DP/BDSP Cynthia literally doesn't appear during the climax of the story. And while in Platinum she does enter the Distortion World to help track down Cyrus and Giratina, she still leaves an 11yo to take down what many have called "Pokémon's satan".
Meanwhile Lance, in the Johto games, helps the player break in to Team Rocket's HQ to try to take them down. He even aids the player in a double battle against Ariana.
Furthermore, Leon tries to stop Eternatus by himself, both in SWSH and in Journeys. Only after he's failed (SWSH) or left NEARLY DEAD (JN), are the player and Hop or Ash and Goh able to take on Eternatus with the help of Zacian and Zamazenta.
Also we've been over this a billion times, the games and anime have completely different rules. You can't use game logic to bash the anime, they aren't comparable.

Funny enough many people say cynthia gave them trouble because of gen 4 xp curve however lance is a much more severe example of this I lost to him like 20 times

Honestly, Volo allowed me to realize how overrated Cynthia is.
During Legends Arceus you constantly run into him and get his help, at the end of the main story he's basically the only friend you have left, and that plot twist at the end that he was just manipulating you to use you as a tool to get to Arceus is straight up genius and completely surprised me. And that final fight is by far the hardest and most difficult fight in all of the games, and once you win Volo literally summons the equivalent of the devil to fight against you twice. And the reward being the flute is one of the most satisfying things ever!
And then you have cynthia. You run into her a few times, she gives you an egg, you talk to her grandmother, and that's about it. Sure she goes into the distortion world with you, but you do all the fighting and puzzle solving, all cynthia does is walk around until it's time to leave. Sure the final fight with her in the pokemon league is tough, but she really doesn't have much of a character arc or anything. She's just known for being strong, which is basically all leon is known for (being undefeated).
TLDR: Volo is not only stronger than Cynthia, but also has an infinitely better character arc, personality, and story.
No. Volo is harder because the player character is far less experienced than Dawn/Lucas due to the game having so much less trainer battling in it. Dawn/Lucas or Cynthia would be in a much easier situation facing him.
He’s not stronger than her really. Not to mention his team is a weaker version of hers. He’s only harder to beat because of Girantina lol

She also has a nasty habit of not sticking around when shit hits the fan. She just drops by for a little bit to dump exposition or show off her strength, and then she just fucks off until the plot of whatever season or series demands that she come back again.
Trainers like Red and Leon are strong lore wise because of their battle experience/bond with their Pokémon, not because of the kind of Pokémon they have. You can have your Garchomps and your Spriitombs. But nothing beats raw skill and experience. At least story wise. Sucks that doesn’t work gameplay wise. They need a haki mechanic.
Red and his Pokémon are apparently so in sync they know what he wants them to do without him having to tell them. He is the greatest trainer in that regard.
First of all we don't even know IF Cynthia really battled Leon offscreen she probably just faced lance and took his number 2 spot
Secondly diantha isn't that weak as she is in the games in one of the Pokemon movies she litterary one shots wikstroms mega Scizor with moonblast
Third I am a guy that loves Cynthia more than Leon as well but I don't think Cynthia might be stronger than him since she never was confirmed to be an unstoppable force she was and still is just the strongest trainer in sinnoh meanwhile Leon was all his life unbeatable and never lost a battle oh and yes the Leon stans will Ratio you hard lol

I never liked Armourshipping, I felt it dominated Serena's character too much, plus it took her like 50 episodes to do anything of note. That's almost over half of the Indigo League in length with Serena..Just there not doing anything.
Amourshipping and shipping overall is just weird and its just simps talking about two kids having relationships

Mmm ... ok, I'll agree Serena's overrated for the Amourshipping and the kiss scene. However, I have to disagree with your other reasonings.
I think her performances were fine and that she got pretty creative at times, and I especially loved what she did in the Journeys episode.
Serena becoming Ash's rival would've been epic, but I don't think it's her fault that the writers didn't write her that way.
I'd also say Serena's growth at the very least rivals May's and Dawn's; I absolutely couldn't stand XY Serena, but I always loved seeing XYZ Serena in her new design. Serena, like May, also went against her parents' wishes and set out on her own journey.
Ash's Pikachu also trusted her enough to let her command him, and Serena was even able to copy some of Ash's moves during battle.
Lastly, Serena has one of the most powerful moments in the XYZ sereis, pulling Ash out of his lowest moment after his loss against Wulfric when none of his other friends were able to, not even his battle-rival Sawyer.
In my eyes, Serena's overrated only for Amourshipping. Even if we pushed that bias aside, Serena would still be a great character

And also, what she did worked; I can't think of a time where another pokegirl was nearly this impactful on Ash during one of his low moments
I can get that but still I wouldn't count it as 'working' simply because the writers of the show made it seem like it would work just to make Serena look good. Yes that kind of stuff can work mostly for people like best friends not normal friends/people you barely know. Clearly with how sensitive Serena is and how bad of a mood ash was at the time they haven't gotten to THAT stage or level of friendship to where they can pull stuff like that and bounce back like everything is fine
I'm surprised to not find Gary on this list. I was almost expecting to see either Lillie or Dawn (which I'm glad to say that I didn't).
But, what you said about Serena possibly being a Rival to Ash really makes me hope that they take that route with Nemona in the Scarlet and Violet anime. I've never been more excited about a new Rival than I've been with this one.
I feel like you're overrating cynthia here, she's just another champion who happened to be arguably the most difficult in game however aside from that as a character she dosen't contribute to the story and just leaves you to fight team galactic by yourself the whole time at least lance has that going for him that he actually helps you against team rocket
Speaking of lance I don't think he should be on this list it's not his character's fault gamefreak made such a terrible job with the dragon type in the earlier gens and their straight up refusal to add new pokemon to the dex in remakes or else he would have had more dragon types in FR/LG and HGSS. He was also done pretty dirty in the anime getting replaced by looker who in my opinion is a much less interesting character
However I completely agree on serena, red and leon
I had an easier time with beating Cynthia than Leon. Cynthia is overhyped and overrated to a high degree in my opinion.

How can he be underrated when anime itself screams about him being no.1 in world , if u consider team perspective Cynthia is much stronger than Leon , back when there wasn't any fairy types , she was an absolute nightmare for players

Leon?? Cynthia should be there instead tbh. Although, I never understood the argument that game Cynthia had no personality. That's basically calling the quiet kid in the room to have no personality :/ I think the better way to describe it is 'boring' at most.
Anime Cynthia has tons of character, she literally helped to develop a bond between and a nuthead rival and changed his perspective and fought along the heroes when the dialga and palkia arc came. She did what Leon also did but tons better. She's a bit overrated but she deserves that as her is a well built competitive team which makes the games more interesting.
Leon is literally easy to beat and his team is nothing special. He’s ranking champions based off of their power in the games. BDSP came after Sw/Sh and her battles are far more intimidating than his. Not to mention, Volo, one of the strongest trainers, is a clone of her.

Thank you for this plus Serena was stalker and nothing will ever change my mind on that how you gonna leave home just to chase some crush. Dawn is the better pokégirl. Even though Iris is my favorite.
Idc if she’s considered overrated, I love Serena! She is my favorite PokéGirl and I loved her evolution in the Journeys anime. She really came into her own, her growth was amazing! If anything, I would switch Serena out with Dawn. She has had way more appearances post DP anime and I feel like the fan base hypes her up WAY too much.
I think May is probably the only one who's really underappreciated out of all pokegirls. Others are overrated as well at least to some degree.
Cynthia is overrated as hell in the anime. I really appreciate Leon's personality in the anime i don't care if he's not the strongest in the anime but I think he influenced Ash the most and he's basically a bigger and adult version of Ash and that's more reason to love him
I admit that I haven't cared for May as much as she deserves. When I first watch AG and saw her come on, I was mostly like, "Why is she here? Lemme see Ash's Gym Battles instead of this Contest stuff!" Seeing DP helped changed my attitude towards Contests and, really, anything that wasn't about Ash. Once I finish XY, I'll rewatch AG.
May was hated because she was the pokegirl “replacing” Misty. But May was the first OG one who actually had a purpose and it wasnt just following Ash around. She said she wanted to be a coordinator and she went for it and now she’s the prinses of Hoenn. Also her development was amazing. She will always be my favorite
Cynthia influenced Ash and friends through out Sinnoh and Unova, she was an actual mentor yet did more than Lance in Kanto/Johto combined. She took the initiative and leadership role.

The anime is not the same as the games, so if the Pokémon Anime says Leon is stronger than Cynthia, then Leon is stronger than Cynthia. Also Cynthia is more overrated than Leon anyway.

Serena I loved her going her own way from what her mom wanted but I disliked showcases so much it should of just been contest with tierno as a rival I disliked it being girls only and it was so short Serena only did 4 while with contest you do 5 if you win all the time then the big events at the end. Also I dislike her return in journeys with contest live which was most likely only because Chloe doesn't battle for fun and Erika and Serena should of been COTD to not overshadowed Chloe in her EP she needs the focus. I much rather have Serena, Lisia, Dawn, Jessie, Ash and Goh doing a Wallace cup with 3 or so EP. Serena using 3 pokemon while Lisia used 1 seems a bit like cheating they should of had normal 1, great 2, ultra 4 and master 6 pokemon you use I would give Serena mega Absol, Clefable and female meowtic while Lisia got azumarill, ludecolo, Volbeat, illumise and dress up pikachu just made it seem fair.
That 1st place should be Cynthia tbh. 😅
Hmm I find it funny that Leon is mentioned that he is overrated from anime perspective but all your points supporting it sound like a Cynthia worshipping rant and they are also from the games. You should have realised by now that anime lore and game lore do connect but do not dictate each other.I think rather than claiming it to be factual you should state this video more of a personal opinion. Anyways I’m also a Cynthia fan here but you sound like any other worshipper hating Leon for topping her.

@@manporo5865 yeah it is true that Leon is kind of over rated in a sense. But I feel like taking part in a big competition like PWC and still remaining undefeated is itself a major feat (although off screen sadly). I feel like old players or older fans tend to mix up their nostalgia and deviate their arguments for their own convenience a lot. Cynthia is definitely strong and it’s been established in anime but no clear battle feats has been mentioned like Leon other than her strong Sinnoh region champion title and persona. Even in Black and white when she fought against the elite four if she was the top tier unbeatable people claim she should have clapped her in my opinion. Lots of things people tend to miss out on.

For me when it comes to the games I would put Leon over Cynthia. In terms of story in the games. In DPP it’s me a 10 year old with 7 badges who has to fight the either the devil or the god of space or time while Cynthia stands there with her thumb up like the Batman meme. After that I have to battle her to become the champion. In terms of the narrative of the game why would she be a challenge for me, I’ve already bested a Pokémon that can create a new universe. On the other hand the story of SWSH does a good job of making Leon seem like the best champion. He takes care of the dynamax Pokémon himself because he’s the champion. He doesn’t relay on a kid with less than 8 badges. After that he goes to handle eternatus. Even tho he does fail at capturing it your character doesn’t beat eternatus. It takes Leon to get to the point to where it has to eternamax and it takes the 2 legendaries to even hit it. You’re just the one who throws the ball at the end. So when you do eventually fight Leon it doesn’t feel in story that you’re better than him.

Cynthia gave me such a hard time and Leon also was hard for me but that was because Sword and Shield was my first Pokémon game and I had a pretty unbalanced team at the time but even with a balanced team and great movesets, Cynthia was such a pain to defeat. So yeah, Cynthia and Leon should be switched in the rankings. Especially considering that a magazine or something confirmed Cynthia using Mega Evolution on Garchomp (I think her keystone is in her lipstick shown in the Master’s 8 Preview.)
Red's team in Gen 2 was very good, expecially thanks to Snorlax, the best non legendary Pokemon in GSC. At the PWT Red was less powerful but in his debut generation he was really the best trainer.
Trying to fight Red in the PWT was a pain. Not because he was tough (though he's not an easy opponent by any means.) but because someone else in the champion league would always defeat him instead, usually in the first round, unless I fought him first. I wanted to face Red in the finals but he always sucked too hard to get there.
Snorlax isn't just the best non legendary Pokemon in gen2, if you go by competitive viability, it's the single best Pokemon in the whole game, both in the OU tier where it officially resides as well as in Ubers alongside the overpowered legendaries of that generation

That's irrelevant because the anime is not the games but no, Cynthia is never stated to be stronger than any other Champion. It's a headcanon fans made up. She's an archeologist, not a full time battler like Leon.
But when cynthia battles with paul, the elite 4(lucian,flint,aaron),team galactic commanders,grunts etc. she never loses
She also helps ash and trio in the unova region during the meloetta and the forces of naturr arc
She appears many times in journeys helps ash, goh even brock and dawn like in the team galactic arc of journeys, that unown episode and many others.

@@AryanSingh-ix7qq I never said it meant she was weak, I just said she's not fully devoted to battling like Leon. She even says it in her introductory episodes, that when she was younger, she thought only about power and victory, and trained endlessly, but outgrew that mindset.
Tobias was basically just a plot device used to roadblock Ash, not really much of a character (like Alain or even Cameron.) I kinda doubt anyone else would have been able to stop him after the likes of Paul, especially since the last dude Tobias fought wasn't even able to stop Darkrai. He fulfilled that purpose, so we'll never see him again.
My issue is less with Serena, but more how some Amourshippers can be really creepy. (Like drawing her and Ash--as kids, mind--getting married, or otherwise sexualizing her. Tho, that's not limited to just her, there's a portion of the fanbase that sexualizes the kids and it's just really fucking gross.)
honestly i dont remember a single showcase episode from the X/Y anime....I legit remember like, the Zygarde "ark", some of the gym fights, Ash jumping off the tower (Twice), the league and....I never SAW it live in the episode, but i saw the clip where Serena "kissed" Ash

For Leon, the anime and the games are on a different tier. In the anime, the limitations of the games aren't there for the most part when it comes to certain things. Diantha may be easy in the games, but in the show, she was a powerhouse who was also in the XYZ Final Battle. Leon being Number One isn't for Gen 8. I think it's because of how overwhelmed we were going up against Cynthia due to how the games worked that anyone else gets dismissed, which isn't truly fair to them. He also had a great motivation and backstory during the Sword and Shield arc and Episode 100.
Plus in the games, if you're not ready for Leon, he'll trample you and give you a hard time. He's especially scarier in the Battle Tower when you encounter him.
You know what? Rowlet is overrated big-time. I adore the memes, and yes, Ash’s Rowlet got some unlikely wins, but to call it a god is just taking it way too far. Rowlet fans need to chill out and call it something less obsessive. Please.

To be fair, Rowlet has always been the most popular gen7 starter since it was first revealed, and many people think it had the coolest design when fully evolved into a Decidueye as well, which only contributes to it's popularity. Because of this, I'm not all that surprised that people place it on a pedestal, but I will agree that calling it a "god" is taking it a bit too far. Also, I think that people overrate how cute it is, too, as being round doesn't make it cute by itself, in my opinion

Leon's Charizard had no business tanking a Max Rockfall from Lance's Gyarados. Lance's Gyarados rightfully did not tank a Max Lightning. Anime cheeze should have limits.

I disagree that gameplay should be a 1:1 reason why a character should be strong in lore, and I feel like overrated should be fixed on fan feedback rather than lore/appearances because Imma be real:
As strong as Cynthia is, I feel she is overrated/exaggerated by fans who got bodied as her as younglings, and her semi-competitive ev/iv buffed teams as of recent instead of like the Battle Tree where she’s hardly as tough.
But I do appreciate how often she has technically appeared in each gen after 4, barring gen 6.
Serena is probably the most overrated character we ever seen in the anime

Serena should’ve definitely be had been the main rival for Ash during Kalos before Sawyer and Alain were brought in . He never really had an actual main female rival throughout the anime’s run . But if I was one of the writers of the anime I would’ve let her be a season trainer that had the same amount of experience as Ash (meaning she been to all the other regions before heading back home to Kalos to challenge her home league ) but is just as a great tactical battler like Paul except not harsh at all

I'm going to be fair on this. As much as I like Serena; don't get me wrong, I think she's an amazing character and the development she had after finding her goal was great. Here's what makes me agree with the reason she's overrated in my opinion. After that goal find, she's just became a carbon copy of May and Dawn. The performance was kinda fine at first, but I sometimes find myself liking the other performers acts more. Reasons why I like May is because she like Serena had to find her goal. Only difference is that it took almost an entire season for Serena to find her goal and May in about 15 to 20 episodes. May's performance were pretty, but each one after was an improvement, because of the experience. And as much as I don't like Dawn(I know most fans like her), her goal was already set, cause of her mother being a top coordinator already.
This reason makes me want to just go for Lillie, cause she started out being afraid of Pokemon due to her traumatic past to literally loving them as the SM series ended. I can relate to her, cause I had a real life experience back when I was a teen. Lillie's story/development is probably one of my favorite moments in Pokemon in general. And as not many fans like Iris, but I honestly found Iris more entertaining than Serena, cause of the battles/development she gained. Serena's not a bad character, not in the slightest. In my opinion, there's just more coordinators then trainers, and your right. She should've been a trainer instead.

While I can understand your point, I feel like the reason the anime made Leon “the strongest” was a reference to the games. Furthermore, yes the anime is notorious for questionable decisions/details for plot convenience, but I also feel you can’t apply how easy a character is to beat in games to how they would be if this stuff was actually real. After all, in the anime, not only does the fact pokemon can move, sometimes in even more unique ways, but they are more creative

Big disagree on Cynthia beating, and I'm shocked how she isn't #1 on this list when she has the personality of sandpaper and wasn't even that hard as a kid. Also consider the fact that after becoming champion Red went up to the mountains and trained for god knows how long, surrounded by high level wild Pokemon at high altitudes. Meanwhile Cynthia is sitting on her ass battling jobbers and not being challenged at all till the protagonist dethrones her.

I feel like some of the reasoning is applying game logic to anime logic which is kinda messy. There’s no reason why Diantha, who was an important character in XY anime, couldn’t be in the Masters 8 even if her video game version wasn’t as strong. But other than that good list
No argument with Serena and Leon. Leon's supposed flawless record never felt real and it shouldn't even matter with champions in the first place. Serena however has a few major flaws that people in their obsession just do not acknowledge. Her crush is entirely one sided and never reciprocated, she places Ash on a pedestal and gets upset when he doesn't live up to that made up version of him that she created, and she is incredibly passive and dismissive with not questioning Ash all that much. None of these are good things particularly for any sort of relationship but they get overlooked because they don't fit the desired narrative.
Lance however I feel that you were being a little hard on him. The guy just didn't have much options in gen 1 and 2. Red however does live up to his hype party because he is us, and personally I had a whole lot more trouble with him than I ever did with Cynthia.
My theory of Serena becoming a Pokémon Performer is that the writers wanted to make her a Pokémon Idol, but had difficulty to write her as an aspiring idol and it was difficult to portray that dream in a competitive scene, at least for Pokémon. Elle/Aria was introduced as an idol before the concept of Pokémon Performances was introduced. The ED DoriDori looks more like an idol music video than a Pokémon Performance. Serena fails to become the new Kalos Queen because pf her lack of popularity and she traveled to Hoenn because she would be unable to succeed in Kalos in the state she was currently in. And now in Journeys, she’s forming an idol unit with Lutia/Lisia in Hoenn.
2:13 the reason for why Tobias is not in masters 8 is because his sole role of existence was to stop ash from winning a league because the storytellers likely had zero idea of what to do if ash won a league so they pushed such an event back so they could continue to spin the wheels not going anywhere in terms of storytelling just endlessly stall.
He is one of many gatekeeper characters with this same purpose. Like Richie from kanto, the trainer with the blazinen from jhoto, the trainer with the meowth from hoenn, the trainer with 5 Pokémon from unova, and even Alan in kalos. Tobias is just the most blatant example of such a character.
You want Serena to be friendly Rival when we have Clemont and later Sawyer do the same job for Ash?

How I feel about Leon and Cynthia situation is that the TPC overrates Leon while the fandom overrates Cynthia.
Cynthia left an impact on us, she was memorable and in many ways admirable. Leon had none of that. He was hyped up to be a figurehead just because it was like you said generation 8 and because he was quote on quote "unbeatable" in SwSh, he was not a challenge at all, while I struggled greatly with Cynthia especially as a kid, and Leon being more disappointing as a champion.
Cynthia has a competitive teams. Take note. Multiple competitive teams that she has showcased on high stages multiple times. First as a champion in DP&P, next in Pokemon World Championship in Black and White and last in BDSP.

I think it sounds a but weird that part of your praise for Cynthia comes from the battles difficulty but then state "when you were a kid". Like, of course Leon is going to be an easier fight when your older and have more knowledge of the games and their mechanics. I'm not trying to say your opinion is wrong or that Leon is a difficult fight in comparison to Cynthia or anything, I like her as well. Personally, I felt that Leon left an impact on me, he to me didn't just feel like a champion, from the way the people of Galar spoke about and cheered for him in the championship match, he felt like THE champion of Galar, and I thought that was really cool. Not to mention he acted like an adult and tried to stop Eternatus himself, even if he wasn't able to, but in fairness he didn't do it with 3 others like the MC did, with 2 of them being the heroes of legend.

I would add Misty to the list. I DO think she adds an interesting dynamic to the trio, but while re watching, she doesn't actually do much and at times can be grating. Don't get me wrong, I still like her and she might be my favorite female protagonist. I just think she's not as great a character as the fanbase thinks and it's mostly nostalgia goggles. I think many people like her because she's supposed to be more tomboyish, but honestly, she isn't as much of a tomboy as fans like to think (in the anime at least. I think Pokemon Adventures and Electric Tale of Pikachu do a better job with her character). I think once Togepi enters the scene she becomes less interesting for some reason (Togetic really should've happened in Johto). Yes I DO like Misty, just not as much as I used to.
Personally the fact that Misty is actually NOT as tomboyish is what makes her my favorite, weak writing of any character besides Ash during the OS arc aside. I love that she is tough and kinda rude and has a lot of tomboyish traits, but at the same time she also embraces feminine traits, she loves fashion and cute things, she is motherly, and she loves being a girl. And to me as a kid that meant a lot, because it encouraged me that liking girlish things is okay, even if you are into a lot of typical boy things. It is a mixture you dont see a lot in anime, much less anime from that time. And that is what makes her so interesting to me, and I know a bunch of people that feel the same way.
We did see how Leon became #1. Him and Lance were the top 2 trainers in last season's tournament. Leon beat Lance in the finals, making him #1.

You have to remember that Leon's ranking transfered over from the previous tournament that's why he's still ranked number 1. Cynthia and most likely other champions in the current top 8 did not participate in the previous tournament that's why trainers like Raihan and Flint were in it at one point. Lance was number 2 and has now fallen out of the spot due to more champions that had entered the tournament surpassed him. Cynthia being number 2 makes a lot of sense at the moment for those reasons. With that being said, if they were to face off, Cynthia will most likely win.
Masters 8 members can also drop in rank simply by losing. Flint dropped from 7 to 8 after Leon beat him.
I think garchomp's overrating came from Cynthia so she should be here but pretty low. And don't forget about Paul dude, almost 79.3% of the fandom hates him
Garchomp isn’t really overrated though, it’s still a threat even 4 generations later. And it isn’t even her only powerful Pokémon. So she isn’t overrated . The BDSP rematch with her is literally the hardest battle in the games minus Volo, who ironically, is a Cynthia clone with a worse team due to H-Arcanine.
I was kinda hoping to see one of the game protagonist at the Champions League in Galar, like Red, I think its would be cool that before Ash face Leon he had an fight agains't our big OG Pokemon Protagonist, after all, that seems like his LAST "journey", after all even tho it doesn't looks like much Leon still the "UNDEFEATED CHAMPION", the TOP of the TOP, the number 1, and the anime is making it look like that- but I guess nevermind then...

Personally, two characters from the anime that I think are overrated are Misty and Gary.
Compared to the other pokegirls, I don’t think Misty had much of a story arc, even after becoming more likable in Johto. Not to mention we barely got to see her make full use of the Pokémon she caught, like her Horsea as an example. In fact, her only Pokémon that I remember being fully useful were Staryu and Gyarados, and occasionally Politoed, but so many others got sidelined.
As for Gary, I never thought of him as an interesting rival to Ash. He was almost never around in the early seasons, and when he did show up, he only had a few proper battles with Ash. To be honest, it wasn't until after Gary decided to give up on battling to become a researcher that I started to become interested in what would become of him. Not to mention it opened the door for more memorable rivals to come into Ash's journey.
Cynthia is way more overrated than Leon. Leon is literally stated to be undefeated because that's just how strong he is. That's not plot convenience that's just plot. Cynthia was a hard boss in the games and had a few encounters in the anime then gets treated like God by the fandom
A big part of why Cynthia is overrated as well comes from how many people you see simping for her, too, which in my opinion causes people to put her on a pedestal even more as a result

If sword and shield wasn so damn easy leon would be a decent challenge. His team is great and his charizard is definitely strong. But the game makes the player way too busted.
Also yeah, Red is a push over. I love him being there regardless, but in reality, if ur mons are in the upper 50s or 60s, and you've got a decent team. You win. Any higher than that, and its a breeze.
Serena just feels like a whole lot of missed potential, also im sick of the anime being like "oh the girl protag probably likes contests!🥰🦄❤" like come on. Such lazy writing. Also amourshipping was super hamfisted

I agree that Red is maybe a little overrated, but I don't think his team is bad at all. Having a water, grass, fire core is good, and it helps that blastoise, venusaur and charizard are generally strong pokémon. Cynthia's team has some cool and strong pokémon, but I'm not so sure she'd beat Red even if their levels were even
I am giving Leon in the anime a chance still till we see his whole team. However I expect to be disappointed.

Personal Hon'ble mention: Alain(Not as a character, just in terms of strength, similar to Tobias). One of the (Not THE) most BS trainers in terms of strength. Ash could deal with Blast Burn just fine even a few minutes (yes, not even an episode) ago, but he can't do it the second time? Or jump over Blast Burn like he did over Frenzy Plant in LITERALLY the last battle? And this was just 'Alain getting stronger' and convenient at all? Not to mention how Alain won almost every battle with Charizard, just because? How he brought 3 fighting quad weaknesses despite clearly seeing how Ash's Hawlucha beat a Mega Absol? How his Zard can't even put so much as a scratch on Steven despite a type advantage and having mastered Mega, while Ash's Greninja bodies Gardevoir despite a type disadvantage and not even having mastered it's ability?
Sure, by this logic, Ash and Paul and many others can be considered overrated. 'Overrated' doesn't mean 'unlikeable'. Alain has a great character, but people hype up his BS strength and never point out just how BS it is. Even though he isn't the Kalos region's Champion, just the league Champion in Journeys, when Ash pummeled Diantha, the region's champion, all the way back in X and Y. Instead they go 'Oh Alain beat Ash 2-0, and that's final because it's in the anime and a rematch doesn't matter' not even realizing: 1) A lot of the writers themselves didn't want to make Alain OP like that and 2) If a rematch didn't matter, why do people not hype up Trip? He beat Ash's Pikachu 3 times. Does that mean his Serperior was stronger? That it wasn't BS how it beat Pikachu in EP1 of BW?
Am I being hypocritic wanting a rematch, hyping him up? Possibly. But I want Ash to beat him for once and for all, and so that we can be rid Alain's BS power-scaling, and so that he can actually show off more of the amazing character that he had in XYZ, which might be overrated, but at least not as much as his strength is, and makes him more widely appealing.
I think that was OK. Ash made a tactical error - he should have countered the Blast Burn in the same way he did a few minutes ago. Rather he chose to just go fro Charizard's neck and hope his ninja is tougher than the flying tank. I don't think he can jump over as easily - Blast Burn is an explosion from the ground while Frenzy Plant is still moving plant vines.
I must point out that "type advantages" are themselves over-rated in the anime environment. All that does is change the amount of damage you do *if you hit*. The anime is also replete with techniques to diffuse the power of blows that are either absent in the game or abstracted into the "level difference" - if you've decreased the base damage by 90% by taking defensive action, then even if it is a four-times effective move it is still doing less than half damage. It's also quite likely that Steven *is* a stronger champion than Diantha.
I was about to get livid if you called Red from the manga overrated, but now that I'm thinking about it, in the grand scheme of the Adventures manga, Red's character isn't all that unique. He's kinda just a kind, carefree, talented dude. If I was forced to pick one of the protagonists from the manga to call overrated, I guess I'd pick Red. I, and a lot of others, absolutely adore him, and I personally like him a lot more than some of the other protagonists, but I can't exactly say that his character is that interesting compared to theirs
