    The biggest disadvantage for me in Pomodoro technique is that instead of focusing on work for 25 minutes, my focus is more on checking time. Thank you so much Faye for telling Flowtime and Batching methods, you are always helpful ❤

    Y'all I confess. 2021 was rather a tough year for me in terms of academics. First of all, I was obsessed with perfection, the aesthetics shown in study vlogs. Every time I sat down on chair to 'study', I actually didn't... I focused more on how I look like, how my study space looks like while I was studying. I became fan of stationaries and bunch of unnecessary stuff like that. Tik tok, youtube decieved me so hard into believing a whole new other truth of 'studying'.
    Now I'm better and I learned one fine lesson. Never believe so whole heartedly, sometimes reality is hidden. Faye has a huge part of me help me focusing rn, thanks to her and Happy New Year!

    You don't need loads of stationary , an ipad, or a pretty handwriting/notes to be an A+ student , choose quality over quantity, focus on how much progress you accomplished instead of how aesthetic the session was. I hope you reach your goals and dreams and happy new year 💛🧡❤

    A little personal tip:
    I've been trying to go with the flowtime for awhile now, (primarily because I get overwhelmed and anxious quite easily so it's technique of doing a specific task has been pretty helpful). however, there's this one thing that I've always felt guilty about which is exceeding to complete a certain task than the time limit I appointed to it. Therefore, I always set a longer time than I know it would take me to complete a task (like gathering resources before writing the essay). Not only does it make me feel better about myself, but also gives me time to go through the task again and find out any fallacy, if pertaining.

    • @Fayefilms
      @Fayefilms  2 роки тому +69

      That’s why tracking your ‘Work Length’ is so important! It gives you an idea of how long you need to complete each task so you can prepare in advance! I actually explained this when filming the video but it made the video too long, so i had to cut it out :((

      Me too! I go for about 45 minutes and then rest for 15. Long breaks only after I finish 4 _tasks._ I'm a completionist, so 25 minutes is way too short for me xD

  • @tiredlittlebean695
    @tiredlittlebean695 2 роки тому +98

    A strategy that works really well for me is to not take genuine breaks- I know it sounds really unhealthy, but hear me out: I will start working, and if I take a break, I won't be motivated to get back to work. So, to replace my break, instead of going on my phone or something, I do something creative. This keeps my mind flowing while still giving it a break in a creative way. So, maybe I'll study for a bit, and then, when I start to lose motivation, I might just sketch a picture or make a bracelet! However, everyone studies differently! Hope this helps tho

    Hey! I think a LOT of people have a misconception of what the Pomodoro technique actually is. Yes, in most youtube videos, people do tend to explain it as a 25-5 minute thing. But the timing isn't fixed. Everybody always forgets to tell you that. Pomodoro works very well for me because it is what you call "Flowtime here"- it ranges from 50 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the subject I'm doing. The fixed time that interrupts you is meant for only one thing, it is supposed to help you keep at your peak capacity. And 25 minutes is at the beginning, it doesn't have to remain that. Some people continue trying to push through even when they have low energy levels, I think it'll work out really well for them:)
    And during the breaks, ideally, you are not supposed to do anything that causes you to focus and think or distracts you because you are supposed to let your brain go into the diffused mode of thinking where it processes and stores all the stuff you have just studied.
    I do like what you said about mindmaps- I use a whiteboard to do something similar when I don't understand certain things. I do your mindmap thing before lab exams because there will be 5-10 experiments you need to know and sometimes, the information gets mixed up. Also, when you compare, you understand the thing SO much better!
    Anyhoo- good job!

      Yeah. You can adjust it according to your liking /comfort. If you feel like you're loosing focus often then study for a shorter amount of time and if you feel like you're good at focusing then you can study for longer periods of time but personally the reason why I don't like this technique is because I keep thinking about the break instead of actually studying so I just try to complete an entire task and then take a break if I feel like it. If not, then I jump onto the next task.

    11:40 this is so much easier because flash cards could go missing and you might not notice. Also I recommend numbering and picking a random number to revise so you don't accidentally memorise based on where it is on the page(easy mistake w visual learners). I love the idea of flashcards because they're easy for questioning and you can shuffle them, but it's hard to keep track of all subjects

    I literally gave up on taking notes. I never thought I would, i treated my notes like the holy grail. I quit taking notes, but I still get the grades I want and I feel so much less stress bc notes for me were so utterly useless. I never read them again or studied them. I just kinda had them. Pretty things but useless. I realized I was wasting time, space, and effort on something that wasn't yielding any results so I ditched it and it's been working wonders for me!! The one with recording yourself explaining really works for like everything.
    Yesterday for the first time i wrote a philosophy essay. I got to choose from 4 topics and I selected the one that I feel most connected with. So i started writing, had to place in order a few paragraphs. Today I recorded myself reading it and while I was reading it I changed some things. When I had to rewrite it it came out perfect.
    When my results come in I'll maybe update. It's for a competition

    I love you and your videos, Faye. I just have one note: gathering many hours of social media and gaming as one batch makes the person tired and overstimulated. I think when it comes to so much draining screen-time, it is better to distribute across the day and multitask.

    • @Fayefilms
      @Fayefilms  2 роки тому +4

      I think it works differently for everyone~ I find that being productive then resting all at one go works better, because if I multitask, I’ll end up wasting a lot more time on my phone. Eg, a 10 min break becomes 1 hour.
      I think multitasking only works if you’re incredibly disciplined~

    I think I’m a combination of all of these when it comes to studying; depends on which subject! For example, I used to be weak in Chemistry so when I studied it, I would read the points aloud while pacing around my room (Went from B to A in just three weeks of doing this!). For subjects heavy on memorisation (History and Biology), I would draw flow charts and visualise.

    One helpful tip for people who struggle with working with the 25/5 pomodoro method… like I did, is to make the working duration longer. There is 45/15 and my favorite 50/10 pomodoros. I cannot work in short intervals so I love 50/10. Also to help me stay off my phone, I watch real time study with me and the people in the video are working with the the pomodoro method I desire. It’s a great way (I believe) to stay motivated and a great way to not touch your phone as it’s already preoccupied. Hope this helps someone :)

    alternatives to pomodoro:
    - flowtime (one task one time)
    - batching (simple tasks at a time)
    other ways to take notes that could be more simple and effective:
    - read a topic > write down/record an audio of everything you can absorb from it > read what you wrote while giving marks at the certain ideas you haven't explained it well
    - sum up a topic in just one sheet of paper > create boxes on the sheet, fill 1 box for 1 page. it forces you to focus only on important ideas
    (my personal notes below)
    i'm a mind map lover and now i understand why it's not really a note-taking method! because i never create a mind map when i haven't read the topic, while note-taking methods are supposed to help us to take notes while studying new materials. when it comes to me, my mind map is created after re-reading a whole topic, to have an in-depth understanding of the concept. i've just realized it now :)

    YOOOO I just now came from outside and I got a new video to watch! For me, pomodoro doesn’t really work since the time to study seems too short and the break also doesn’t feel like a true break for me. I will try to implement these methods in my life! I also use a mixture of outline method and mindmap for my notes. I usually write in outline method for explaination, underlining the key words and I do mindmaps for connecting the topics to the main chapter. Loved this video!

    Just found your channel, loved this video so much that I liked and subscribed only 4 minutes into the video. You're so helpful and patient while explaining! I've done Flowtime and Batching my entire life (without even knowing there are names to these techniques), but people talk so much about Pomodoro that I felt like I should change this to make things better. Your video made me realize that actually I need to change other points in my studying that are lacking, and both Flowtime and Batching work wonders for me!
    What I find most entertaining about this is that Pomodoro comes from scientific studies about the topic. But while there is some background to it, IMO, it doesn't mean it should be THAT strict. What I see the most are people rushing their studies or trying to digest a lot in such a short time period, so they can study as most as they can in those 25 minutes. And also people who are more focused on watching their clocks than actually trying to learn. It becomes a burden, you can't focus correctly, you don't actually absorb any of it. I mean, if that works for you, in my opinion, that's completely fine and you should keep doing that! But whenever that becomes a burden, it's a pretty great sign that it's affecting you negatively.
    I'll make sure to check out everything about your channel, because I really loved your tips and they made me realize a lot of things! Thank you so so much. I hope this year brings lots and lots of joy to your life!

    I disliked mind maps because to me, it all looked like a jumbled mess. Thanks for sharing another way to look at it!
    Other popular study methods I tweaked/use:
    - The Pomodoro method, but 45mins and 15 min break. It's one hour overall and usually gives me enough time to complete my work. Plus, I really do need those eye breaks x)
    - Flashcards, but only online since I don't want to waste materials. It works for me since I like to test my understanding by answering questions and going on imaginary lectures.
    Remember you can always tweak study methods! No one is going to jail you for doing so pfft.

My issue is that once I'm finally motivated to study, after doing so, I will take a break but it ends up being too long and then I've lost my motivation to study again. I think flowtime will be really helpful to me, so thank you again :))

    Edit: I forgot to say that the Pomodoro technique is not bound to 25/5 (as most youtubers would say) You can adjust the time according to preference. I like to do 40/15 or set bigger timers when doing larger tasks. What I mean is the typical 25/5 is a mymisconception. You can just set the time that would take you for completing a project or task, it also works as the flowtime technique.

  • @js835

    I combine the batching and the Pomodoro, but. I do have my reasons. I have bad attention, but I don't use the usual POM, I use two different ones that amount to very similar amounts of times used to help with my memory. One big POM is 55 minutes long with 20 minute breaks, perfect for days when my attention is *fabulous* But. I also use another one, 20 minutes of work and 5 minute breaks. I choose one, and force myself to take a break, but, the smaller ones are for days I don't really... Have any motivation and just want to chill. Because it helps me relax. I have different music for both of them, one for long-term focus and one for just. Staying in the chill. I'm just a kid in a world trying to find things that work. Uh... Thanks for reading though.

    I just realised I've been using the flowtime technique my whole life & guess what!? It works! When I was first introduced to the Pomodoro technique I decided to try and my experience, my experience was like...meh, I was very frustrated to take a 'break' without completing a task (I find it very distracting) so I decided to stick with my old ways.
    Anyways, wishing y'all the best in your journey, you can experiment with different study techniques but if something doesn't work for you then stick to what used to work for you without dwelling on it too much

    As someone who has ADHD I find the regular 25x5 pomodoro to be too short, causing more harm than good to my productivity. So instead I use the 45x10 version, which gives me enough time to get into a groove and then provides me with a sufficient break around the time when I start getting distracted. I also keep a notepad by my side in case I get a distracting idea that's unrelated to what I'm working on, and I'm able to write it down and put it out of my mind until the next break.

    • @MissEynah
      @MissEynah Рік тому +1

      Having a notepad at the side is really good. When I was studying for my recent exams, I sometimes thought of all the things I would do in my free time once the exams are over. So I made a list and wrote it all down. This way I did not only get it out of my head but I also had a motivational list of "rewards" to look at. :D

    hi! i found this video while cramming half of a semester's worth of requirements (do not ask me why) and i reallly found it helpful i finished what was 5 weeks of lessons in two days... ever since i found out about the batching method i really realllly got a hold of my study time and am much more productive now than how i was two weeks ago. i get a lot of work done in the morning and that leaves my evenings free. i used to rest in the evenings with guilt but now it really feels so liberating and very relaxing because i know i've done a lot of things in advance and need not worry about tasks i "might have missed"
    of course, other people may find these positive results with the pomodoro method/other methods as well, but i guess it really is about finding what technique suits you and your personality best. thank you so much for this !!!

    During class, this is how I take notes. This works so damn well for me. I've noticed that I rarely look at the notes. So what I do is I don't care too much about handwriting. I listen, understand, and write my notes in my language in the outline method. But I do keep some space as you do in the Cornell method. After college, in that space, I summarize what's on that page. Works great for me.
