Studying method that has been helpful for me: 1. take notes that contain relevant information. Don't fill your notes to the brim with every word, but instead focus on what the instructor is saying and what they are emphasizing. This is more than likely going to be what's on the test. 2. Organize your notes into distinct topics with headers that summarize the topic. For example, if there's a section about Romantic symbolism in Romeo and Juliet, then the header may be "Romantic Symbolism in Romeo and Juliet". 3. use those distinct headers as prompts, and pretend you're teaching someone else. Cover the info that is written below the headers, and practice using that brief header to explain the topic in depth. Jump around to different topics, make sure you can do it succinctly, and eventually, you'll be able to recall the important info from step 1 just by looking at a few key words. You'll associate those key words with the important info. This is a great way to turn note-reading into an active method, instead of just passively reading.
so right...i feel like trying to make everything super pretty and aesthetically pleasing is just really ineffective, so now i just try to make neat notes and use active recall
That’s so true. When I listen to music during my studies, I often stuck in one question. And only after a while I realise that music is distracting me, so then I take off my earphones and do a task in a minute.
The fact that Jasmine took the time to change locations for each habit and made the video so aesthetically nice shows the dedication she puts on her videos
The best thing about end goals is that it tells you when to stop, so you'd be motivated to begin and give you peace of mind when you're under great pressure (for an exam let's say). Found this out during my Chinese high school entrance exam, otherwise it's just endless panic.
a terrible study habit: actually watching youtube videos while I'm pretending to study, or even worse while I'm supposed to be in class. Yes, I'm actually in online class right now
I got scared when she said not to listen to music cuz it really helps me focus but then she said it could be without lyrics. Lofi is amazingly soothing
Saw this now and I feel called out, but the sad thing is I have been seeking help, but well there's no one who could help me personally right now. It stresses me more that I know so little of our subject and I do want help but no one is there. Even told my father that I'm struggling in a certain subject but says nothing
I highly suggest watching the video for more information, but here’s the main points and timestamps if you’re short on time (hopefully because you want to study!) *1:33** - Forgetting to set goals and plans for studying.* Goals are important so that you can be more efficient while organizing your information and studying. ~2:13 - Instead, determine your and create a plan to reach the goal. *4:07** - Multitasking during study time.* Physiologically, your brain can’t multitask. So it takes more time to do the activities at the same time, rather than completing them individually. ~5:24 - Instead, focus on one task at a time. ~5:40 - Try studying without background noise, or with music that does not contain lyrics, such as ambient noise. *5:53** - Passive study methods.* These include rereading notes or your textbook. It’s more important to be able to recall information instead of just recognizing it in your notes. ~6:49 - Instead, use active studying methods, such as flashcards and practice tests. *7:21** - Only doing what’s easy.* Challenging yourself helps you learn! ~8:45 - Identify your weak points and address them. A good way to identify weak points is by doing a practice test. *9:20** - Studying in bed.* Our brains normally consider our beds a place to relax or sleep. ~10:41 - Pick a spot and make it your designated spot to study. Try making it cozy and happy so you’re encouraged to study! *11:49** - Always refusing help from others or neglect asking for help.* You can interact with people, which is much better than looking for answers online. ~12:35 - Overcome mental roadblocks like pride. Everyone needs help sometimes! People have different knowledge, so you can share your knowledge with each other. Keep in mind, some of these might work for you, and that’s okay. They are general guidelines to help you determine your studying issues. Have a nice time studying, everyone!
I watched the whole video, but I really appreciate your effort into writing this! It must've taken time. Thanks very much 😄😄for helping someone else out.
Yeah no problem! I figured that it would be helpful for those who wanted a quick summary. Plus sometimes I like to come back and look at the tips again, so it is easier to have them written down rather than watching the entire video. I'm sure other people do the same. Have a nice day guys :)
About the multitasking thing, you said that listening to music can be included too, but i have a tip about it! You just need to listen song without words, like piano things, or in a language that you don't know :D
omg i am soooo guilty of only doing the easy questions, especially when doing review stations in math class! i didn't even really realize that i did that until now, so thank you!
Great video! I have ASD (potentially ADHD also) and I need to listen to music without words, it gives myself something to 'focus' on and stops myself from becoming distracted because I'm 'focused' on the music while studying.
The best thing that always helps me is trying to pretend to teach it to someone. When I'm at home I teach my dog and literally a day before the test I teach some of my classmates (while the teacher listens in so they can correct me if I'm wrong)
Music with lyrics actually helps me ground myself to the work more because I tend to zone out a lot while trying to focus because I'm thinking about the topic and then it just branches out to something else and then 5 minutes later I'm thinking about the super Mario overworld theme sounding like green green.
I really agree your last point Jasmine! I used to be shyyy and literally just ignore those topic that I just... can't do but here I am telling you guys to ASK! JUST ASK for real no one cares and some teachers are really surprisingly nice! (My teacher recorded a video specially for me about solving a past year paper and I'm quite shock about the effort my teacher put in!) It may be hard asking for the first time but it'll get better! And add some joy to your studying as well~ Good luck everyone
Yes!! Spot on. Would also add that any teacher or TA or whatever who cares or gets pissy at you or thinks you're stupid bc you _asked for help_ is a jerk anyway lmao, so who cares if they care. 😂
agreed 100%. if anything, asking for help in school will prepare you for when you need to ask for help when you start working. i never asked for help bc i didn't want to be a burden to anyone & i'm paying the price for it now lol. bc when you start working, the actions you take have real-life consequences & when you screw up, you're not just affecting your own grades like in school...
i told my chemistry teacher i didn't understand the lesson and she said what am i supposed to do i always ask at the end of the class if anyone's confused but you don't say anything how's that my fault... ugh bc i dont understand from start to finish girl- she's not even good.
@@yasmin-lx4kb tbh my physics is horrible i got C or fail every single time, and i spent one whole month just revising physics by myself it was hard really...(I self-learned almost 15 chapters) im sure you can try self-learning! (please try before its too late) You can search up on UA-cam or google anything you dont understand and ask your friend! I learned almost everything through Khan Academy that time (before i started taking tuition aka extra class) plus not to mention the teacher that recorded the pastyear is my tuition teacher not my class teacher (you can consider learning from different teacher if your family allow!) all the best!
i just watched the entire video and i am so happy, a few months ago i was really struggling with stress and bad studying habits and i just realized i stopped doing them all and im not stressed anymore !
Omg SO happy to see you call out re-writing notes! I feel like the visual studygram content out there is 98% aesthetic rewritten notes, and I tried it, like 3 years ago, but it was completely useless to me.
I can't emphasize how many times I have to tell my friends that reaching out to professors doesn't lessen their value as a student, it was the most challenging yet rewarding thing I've learned since starting college! I will say, it does require a level of understanding of where you got lost in the material and trying to convey that in words can be REALLY difficult
You’re such an inspiration, Jasmine! 🌟 I’m in grad school, currently working on my year long thesis, so I spend all my time in the lab. I feel like I have no free time at the moment, but when I have a few minutes to spare, I enjoy watching your videos 🥰
to the multitasking: there’s also research that some people (especially more extroverted ones) need more stimuli to work at their best, so to some degree background noise does help some people :)
yeah as someone with adhd, I can't study withought having something else to also 'focus' on (especially if the subject is boring or not engaging enough for me)
I love how you film this outside, with uni vibes! 💓☁️ I never thought I'll miss the ambiance of school so bad, cuz I'm at my room 24/7 for classes now :(
i just discovered your channel during an academic anxiety crisis™ and i have to say i'm loving how you structure your videos! besides the content, this organization is an inspiration in itself
Terrible study habits to avoid *1. Forgetting to set up goals* If you don't set up goals, you don't know what to study so you just wander around *2. Multitasking* Always focus on one thing. Including listening to music, it can distract you. Avoid sounds that can distract you, like TV sounds. *3. Passive study methods (re-reading)* Use active studying techniques, such as: - Flashcards - Practice tests - Teaching a friend *4. Only doing what's easy* Identify and address your weak points and focus on that topic. How to know your weak points: Take a full practice exam of that material (available online, taking tests from old midterms) and take a close look of what you tend to get wrong (certain topic or type of question) *5. Studying in bed* Studies have shown that if you learn the information and study in the same place as you are going to take the test (such as in the same classroom, same desk, etc.), you'll do better on that test. And of course, studying in bed can make you feel sleepy, or you even might fall asleep. Instead, create a comfy and productive workspace. Stay far from distractions (such as phones, TVs, etc.), and stay close to your studying essentials (notebook, textbooks, stationeries, etc.) *6. Refusing to get help* Start off by working through your difficulties individually and look for resources by yourself that way you don't get overly dependent on anybody else. But at a certain time, it might be time to acknowledge that you need outside help from a real person, not just Google and others. Teachers, tutors, or study groups have actual knowledge that they can help share with you, and you can actually interact with them, unlike the internet. So don't be afraid to ask help, because everyone needs help. Asking for help doesn't mean that you don't know enough or smart enough. People might sometimes be shy, but just remember, people generally want to help you, especially teachers and tutors because they are generally very nice and helpful people and they are made to help people with problems they can't solve themselves.
I can just imagine walking by and seeing someone you watch on UA-cam. and are to scared to talk to them. I refuse to believe that there was at least one person like that Also lots of love from Australia ❤️❤️❤️ you are so helpful.
Thank you! It's really nice to actually hear these things. I never realised I was sabotaging myself I always study in bed, I can stay up for long time and when I fall asleep I take it as a signal from my body. Actually I feel more awake when I study on my desk… I don't fall asleep so I actually feel like a mummy in the morning.
This channel has gotten me through freshman and sophomore year of highschool with A’s and B’s I’m now going to junior year, I most likely would have been held back without this channel
I can say that first one about setting a goal, I have not thought to do that. So simple but so rare. To have a goal is one of the most important elements to success.
My school started 3 days ago and my teachers are teaching the whole school about organization and my teacher is OBSESSED with your videos and he's shown us 1 every day
I agree to these but we need to remember something my teach told me: "Mental health is more important than studying. You are trying your best and thats what matters. Make space to relax to help your anxiety." That is very true
Thank you for this video! I was an awesome studier until my sophomore year in HS when I started watching UA-cam regularly. Now I find myself stuck with several very bad study habits as a senior and I am determined to get rid of them, which you are definitely helping me do.
uuuh.. I always listen to music while studying, otherwise I can't concentrate xD it actually helps me memorize stuff because I listen to the same playlist and when I listen to it before I go into the exam, my brain automatically revisits the stuff I've been learning while listening to this music ^^
this is such a well-summerised video. they way you addressed the issues sort of led me to a comforting state in the end and motivated me to work on some weak aspects with regards to my study pattern. thank you.
Hi! Thank you so much for this beautiful and helpful video! ❤ As a non-native speaker, I had a little trouble reading some of the fonts used, but overall, it was so refreshing and creative! Looking forward to more of your work. 😊
I love everything about the video! Very helpful, thank you. :) Just one thing: it’s actually proven that your brain can handle multitasking. Of course, not in the way you describe it, you’re totally right that you can’t study and listen to something for example, but multitasking is actually an amazing skill to train, regarding to everything but studying. Multitasking is a useful skill when it comes to more simple tasks. Let’s say, you’re cooking dinner, listening to an audiobook/podcast and planning what you’re going to the after dinner at the same time. That’s the type of multitasking that is actually beneficial. But of course, as you said, it’s not alright to multitask while studying. Still, it’s scientifically proven that our brain and body can multitask. :))

Jump around to different topics, make sure you can do it succinctly, and eventually, you'll be able to recall the important info from step 1 just by looking at a few key words. You'll associate those key words with the important info.
This is a great way to turn note-reading into an active method, instead of just passively reading.
I learnt this the hard way... I have a book full of notes that are useless and spent half of my 10th grade on it😐😐
so right...i feel like trying to make everything super pretty and aesthetically pleasing is just really ineffective, so now i just try to make neat notes and use active recall
I agree it’s best to write down what you’ll forget or don’t understand also keeping it simple is usually better.
I like too connect the information and it helps me remember later

"to apply that to studying, you need to know WHAT you need to know"
That’s so true. When I listen to music during my studies, I often stuck in one question. And only after a while I realise that music is distracting me, so then I take off my earphones and do a task in a minute.
I do. Why you asked ?
The fact that Jasmine took the time to change locations for each habit and made the video so aesthetically nice shows the dedication she puts on her videos
the power you have is immaculate... SPONSORED BY THE COLLEGE BOARD?!
"how am i famous enough to do this?" 🤣
The best thing about end goals is that it tells you when to stop, so you'd be motivated to begin and give you peace of mind when you're under great pressure (for an exam let's say). Found this out during my Chinese high school entrance exam, otherwise it's just endless panic.
a terrible study habit: actually watching youtube videos while I'm pretending to study, or even worse while I'm supposed to be in class.

Saw this now and I feel called out, but the sad thing is I have been seeking help, but well there's no one who could help me personally right now. It stresses me more that I know so little of our subject and I do want help but no one is there. Even told my father that I'm struggling in a certain subject but says nothing

Just go with your gut at first try not to think about it. Then fix and add knowledge as you study
I highly suggest watching the video for more information, but here’s the main points and timestamps if you’re short on time (hopefully because you want to study!)
*1:33** - Forgetting to set goals and plans for studying.*
Goals are important so that you can be more efficient while organizing your information and studying.
~2:13 - Instead, determine your and create a plan to reach the goal.
*4:07** - Multitasking during study time.*
Physiologically, your brain can’t multitask. So it takes more time to do the activities at the same time, rather than completing them individually.
~5:24 - Instead, focus on one task at a time.
~5:40 - Try studying without background noise, or with music that does not contain lyrics, such as ambient noise.
*5:53** - Passive study methods.*
These include rereading notes or your textbook. It’s more important to be able to recall information instead of just recognizing it in your notes.
~6:49 - Instead, use active studying methods, such as flashcards and practice tests.
*7:21** - Only doing what’s easy.*
Challenging yourself helps you learn!
~8:45 - Identify your weak points and address them. A good way to identify weak points is by doing a practice test.
*9:20** - Studying in bed.*
Our brains normally consider our beds a place to relax or sleep.
~10:41 - Pick a spot and make it your designated spot to study. Try making it cozy and happy so you’re encouraged to study!
*11:49** - Always refusing help from others or neglect asking for help.*
You can interact with people, which is much better than looking for answers online.
Wow thanks 🥰
Yeah no problem! I figured that it would be helpful for those who wanted a quick summary.
Plus sometimes I like to come back and look at the tips again, so it is easier to have them written down rather than watching the entire video. I'm sure other people do the same. Have a nice day guys :)
This is so awesomeee,,thankss
Omg you're an angel! Thankyouuuuu
"stop refusing to get help" wow you really gonna come for my neck like that
You are so well spoken and humble and you are totally going places, friend! Thank you for this!
I Don’t really have a dog but I do with a stuffed animal or plushies of mine and that helps a lot too
Exactly! I teach imaginary kids...

I’ll try to quit these habits hopefully there will be improvement when im studying

to the multitasking: there’s also research that some people (especially more extroverted ones) need more stimuli to work at their best, so to some degree background noise does help some people :)
yeah as someone with adhd, I can't study withought having something else to also 'focus' on (especially if the subject is boring or not engaging enough for me)

Terrible study habits to avoid
*1. Forgetting to set up goals*
If you don't set up goals, you don't know what to study so you just wander around
*2. Multitasking*
Always focus on one thing. Including listening to music, it can distract you. Avoid sounds that can distract you, like TV sounds.
*3. Passive study methods (re-reading)*
Use active studying techniques, such as:
- Flashcards
- Practice tests
- Teaching a friend
*4. Only doing what's easy*
Identify and address your weak points and focus on that topic.
How to know your weak points:
Take a full practice exam of that material (available online, taking tests from old midterms) and take a close look of what you tend to get wrong (certain topic or type of question)
*5. Studying in bed*
Studies have shown that if you learn the information and study in the same place as you are going to take the test (such as in the same classroom, same desk, etc.), you'll do better on that test. And of course, studying in bed can make you feel sleepy, or you even might fall asleep. Instead, create a comfy and productive workspace. Stay far from distractions (such as phones, TVs, etc.), and stay close to your studying essentials (notebook, textbooks, stationeries, etc.)
*6. Refusing to get help*
Start off by working through your difficulties individually and look for resources by yourself that way you don't get overly dependent on anybody else.
Other than finding out that classes are canceled, this was a great thing to wake up to🌞💛
