yeah, this elicited a deep hearty laugh from me

Dont knock the shovel I have a russian style one and its great.

The Kama was originally designed to harvest crops in japan.
Kunai are just trowels.
Shuriken were often sharpened coins and/or metal scraps.
I got one for my garden. When you do not want to mow down all of it, for that I got a scythe.
Nunchucks were just primitive weed-wackers and sai were used to plant seeds. And the bostaff is just, a stick.
The history of all these Japanese martial arts have really cool contexts without swords involved
How come japanese tools are so aggressive

If it has a hole in the blade, is tactical *duh*
Yea it’s “tactical” because it’s blade is black. Rather disappointing use of the word.

Add a collapsible stock along with a flashlight!
Grzegorz Kalinski wristmounted rail with exchangeable accessories, including red dots, scopes, bipods, foregrips, assassin's creed knife, and a pouch to keep your pack of floss in.
A collapsable handle would be quite tactical indeed. A tactical flashlight could be used to blind the opponent.
We also need a mounted grenade launcher!
Don't forget the bump stock!
It would make a nice pair with a tatical hammer.

Didn't get this at first, took me 2 seconds lol.

George Mcmillan not so sure you get the joke
I mean should be a sickle but sure
You win. Liked it so much I went and gave your goat video a thumbs up. 🐐👍
Basically, if you hit somebody with it, they die. Everything you'd expect from a good weapon.
No its still pretty crap lol make this out of 1075 or a stainless equivalent. Make it thinner and actually have an edge and then it would become a good weapon. It would actually work as it was intended and as a pick. A pointed round rod on that handle would work just as well as this would
@@betafishjeremy7454 Except for the fact that your pointed rod would lack a cutting edge of any sort. There's a pretty major difference between a curved sickle blade and spike. For one, the sickle shape blade utilizes centrifugal force better when swung. Second, because of the inverted shape, the majority of the impact force is centered at the tip of the blade, allowing it to bite into and slice the target. You know, rather than just making a simply puncture, it makes a fairly large gash since it pierces then cuts downward. So it's actually more effective than than just a standard pick. The blade is thick to give the blade a some substance of durability, letting you use cheaper metal for it. Of course higher quality steel is always a plus.
So really, all this thing needs is higher quality metal and a proper pommel.
@@wilcoxway thats more or less what I was saying. Except it really doesnt slice with the angle of the bevel. Even the test he showed on the bummy was just a puncture not a slice. Thats why he even said its more like a pick and what is a pick but a curved spike on a stick. This is just a fancy version of a pick. This is far from what I would call a good weapon. Its ok or decent at best. Now for the price yes you could say its good however, would be better to save your money and get something better or learn to make them yourself and become a blacksmith like I did lol
wilcoxway It still is edgy and impractical as hell tho
@@mkreis1598 Do tell how it's impractical as hell. It's a sickle that does exactly what a sickle is intended to do.

Well, that was a bit surprising. Guess even United Cutlery gets it right sometimes. Of course, now you have to review the M48 Tactical Hammer and compare them as weapons.
NotWellKnown you ain't seen that one video of the warhammer shattering against an ultradead termite-eaten log?
Skall needs test the entire M48 line so people can see which ones are actually worth spending the money and which ones are pure junk.
M1917 Tactical Hammer & Sickle
A lot of the m48 crap you see is designed with one purpose in mind and that is to kill. Zombie go boom is a youtube channel that test weapons against anatomically accurate ivan heads that simulate a human head and I've seen plenty of m48 stuff ahnialate those heads. And those heads aren't soft either human skulls are surprisingly tough. The hacksmith once got one of their ivan heads and tried smashing it with a big heavy crowbar and the head survived with ease cause it was a lot harder than he expected. Then again zombie go boom also managed to stab a wooden pencil through them humans are weird like that. Trip down the stairs ->dead. Fall hundreds of ft without a parachute and you can miraculously come out alive.
Btw they've tested the kama, kukri cyclone, war hammer, regular and double sided tomahawk, spear, and some other m48 weapons and they all trashed the heads with ease. It may be tacticool garbage but its tacticool garbage that works cause I've seen them use plenty of weapons like machetes, knives, hammers and other things that just glance off, break and fail miserably. Dont know what it is about m48 but they know what they're doing. I've yet to see a single one of their weapons fail to end a zombie or even break during the torture test aside from the tomahawk.
I heard the common folding hand shovel carefully sharpened was an important close combat weapon in WWII.
Entrenching tools are very effective. Never hear of a broken one
Yep. The E Tool was a scary weapon to face in close quarters, back in World War II. A good swing to the head would have caused a serious concussion, if not a skull fracture that would kill you in a matter of hours. But a sharpened hand shovel is pretty close to an improvised hatchet-type weapon. Sure, the edge could get messed up with digging, but it was still very brutal in CQC.
@@Anino_Makata hardly these things were put through the ringer and after war the ones on the market looked pretty good
@@deviantsid18 My brother broke one. Though I suspect it was a modern reproduction intended for the camping market. He's still using the rear folding pick part as a digging pick with the torn remains of the shovel removed.

Link?
This either needs a mallet paired up with it (for "comrades") or a chain and spiked ball attached to it (for ninjas).
The flail on the handle was rarely spiked for the actual tool, only on fantasy weapon versions did you have a spiked flail.
A Black Legion Kama, from UC is a better choice for a kusarigama
@@Taolan8472 it’s called “Morning star” (and they had spikes)
Edit: the one-handed variant was for cavalry, the two-handed was for infantry
@@Saturnus_Ouranos ... Wow, dude. Wrong century, wrong geographical region, and you're wrong about flails as european weapons as well.
A short sickle with a chain flail attached is a japanese agricultural tool, a combination of either a kama or a jingama for the sickle and a konpi which was an iron chain with a weight at the end. As a weapon the combined tool is known as a kusarigama, and spiked versions of them only appear in fantasy media.
"Morning star" refers to *any* spiked mace, not just flails. Flails were flails, and came in both one and two handed varieties with different lengths of both the lead and the head. One-handed flails were not exclusive to cavalry, or even apparently specifically for cavalry, but two-handed flails are exclusively depicted in the hands of soldiers or knights on foot.

Great Video review! On a side note I have a great suggestion to improve the handle grip. At the hardware in the plumbing section you can find some thicker black rubber "O" rings. Try getting ones that are small enough that you can just barely roll them on the handle (starting at the butt end of the handle) they will lock in to the handle groves and because the rings are round they feel very comfortable in the hand while providing great grip improvement. If you decide you like them and want to make them permanent then you can carefully add just a drop of super glue to hold them on . Just an Idea that's worked great for me on a lot of my axe and sheath knife handles.
or try parra cord, n then youd have the grip that wont slip, and the extra cord n if needs be unravel n swing with the cord
Here's the thing if they called it like it is a "Black plastic pick" it wouldn't sell as much as "Tactical kama" and you know it. It's like the same thing with katanas and single edged swords. Calling it katana has increased marketability!

for a sword and knife guy you forgot to tell that triangled shape knife type weapons were banned after WW1 because is near impossible to stitch together the wound!
Becaue it is not a knife it dosent qualifys in this weapon type.
The thickness if this blade migth make a triangle shape wound... that we could not see verry well in the balistic dummy because of the angle.
PS - China still uses triangle shaped trench knifes.
Yeah... um, Britain was perfectly fine using spike type Lee-Enfield No.4 bayonets, Russia continued use of the spike bayonet on the Mosin-Nagant 91/30 as well as subsequent carbines, and France used the MAS-36 with its spike bayonet that plugs into the rifle. Spike bayonets are perfectly legal. They're simple to make, reasonably strong, and eliminates "unnecessary" features such as an edge. (provided you're using your bayonet for stabbing, or as a screwdriver to maintain your rifle.)
So much BS in one place. There are no banned edged weapons.
@@jasonmaughan2731 except in the UK.
@@ImperialistRunningDo Sure, butthey banned by the government as to ownership by private citizens. We are talking about edged weapons that are banned from use in warfare.

I bought the Kama's cousin, the Hawkpick, several months ago. It's literally just a tomahawk with a pick on the back. And it's the most practical for outdoor use.
I used it extensively when I was helping with yard work. Makes short work of wood and even ice. Damaged the upper tip of the axe head a little bit, but nothing that a grinding stone couldn't fix.
Sheath for it is similarly cheap but effective and I wrapped part of the handle in leather suede for added grip. Other than that, I'd highly recommend it to Skall and anyone else who's interested.
Cost?
Well it is actully tactical in every way !
1 : It has a blade that will not rust, so you can swim with it, walk in rain, snow, dirt and what not.
2 : The handle is made out of super hard platic, so once again you dont have to think about water, dirt and so on.
3 : Its black - good colour - Special forces do use many black weapons.
4 : It will cut, stab and bash if you use the handle
5 : The blade is thick so it will not break or bend easily
Is it the best kama on the market ? I don't think so but it will do the job and that is the point i guess.
i don't know why,but i really like that camera angle , looks more dynamic to me than just the classic front facing camera
Loic Oberle agreed, it looks very nice and dramatic.
No guard 0/10
I don't know if you are joking or not, but a weapon doesn't have to have a guard. It depends on the fighting style and the weapon itself. When have you seen a scythe or a pick with a guard?

Actually the Kama was originally a Japanese farming tool
Yes, it´s because of arms laws, here in Sweden there was a lot of duels so it is forbidden to bare arms. The Swedish race is very loyal to authorities so we would never uprise but our honour is importent so the state needed to ban our arms.
Thats why it was the main weapon of the ninja.

Good to hear you liked. I like m48 gear/tools. They seem to make good stuff, most of the time, for camping gear.
You finally reviewed something normal people can afford...congrats on being in touch with reality, it's appreciated!
Con: No unscrewable pommel. You cannot end him rightly
Now the question remains: does it do it's job as a hand scythe?
No. He said it's too thick for slicing and that it's more of a pick than a Kama.
I think a lower carbon steel would be fairly authentic for a Japanese gardening tool.
Currently building a halfling fighter for DnD, this was one of the first weapons to come to mind
Attach a Whip Chain to the handle and you'll have my favourite weapon ever 🤩
Wielding two Kama can disarm samurai.
historical use of pick like weapons?
Should be obvious. If you go against an armored foe then something like this is really effective because all the energy is concentrated in the tip and you can pierce through the plating. That takes much more effort with a sword and compared to something this size a Sword would slow you down considerably.
also mining
I have a role-play character who was trapped unarmed by bandits in an old mine, and the only weapon available was an old, broken pickaxe. He was able to use it to such effect, with it's long two-handed haft and three striking surfaces (one normal pick side, a broken end that functioned sort of like a hammer, and the butt end was broken into a sharp piece of wood), that he had a dedicated weapon made after the fact that followed the same design concept. Think a large Warhammer with a 4 foot haft, a sharpened 2 foot war pick on the opposite side of the head, and a pommel spike, not quite long enough to be a polearm but still long enough to keep most axe and sword wielding enemies out of reach, and there you go: The Battlehammer. The ultimate weapon for fighting monsters and people alike. The hammer defeats armor, the spike can be used to strike over a shield with ease, the butt spike works well in tight quarters as a spear, and against anything that isn't human, imagine a two-foot spike being impaled into your chest through a heavy blow. Yeah, I want one in real life.
In the maciejowski bible, we can see foot soldiers with what looks like war pike, also I know exemple from Alaska, New caledonia, India and Japan so yeah it was broadly used
Crowsby's, the parallel of a warhammer. You can watch a video on the Lindybiege channel about em
How about you review the M48 Tactical Naginata?
Power Strike id rather have him review an M48 Patton :3
i was intrigued by it, such a thick blade with the same kind of edge than on the kama of the video, i doubt it cut that well but again, i didn't had any hope for that kama so i could be wrong.
Lol I bought that thing, works incredibly well as a gardening tool.
M48 does make some good gear for cheap. I bought the tomahawk with the knife edge and it works great.
Thanks for the very thorough review, Skallagrim. I was thinking of picking one up because they’re so cheap, now I think I will.
On a second thought I'll just stick with my machete...
Easier to use.
Edit. Is it me or word "tactical" just lost all its meaning?
Last time I heard term "tactical" it was refering to bacon...
Tactical bacon, i must find this...
My brother cuts the fat off his bacon with a bayonet. That's tactical bacon.
It’s practically tactically tactical practical tactical
My tacticals are hairy.
I think they call it tactical cause it's not meant for anything other than killing people. It's too thick to be used for what its original intended purpose was and most of the m48 line have been confirmed to be effective lethal weapons by zombie go booms UA-cam channel
Me: What makes it tactical? Them: well we punched some holes in it.
And its painted black.
How were kamas used historically? I imagine the hooked blade had some sort of parrying capability
Far as I know japanese version of sickles and thus probably also improvised weapons but never a main battlefield weapon
But I’m not 100% sure
A thin bladed kama would be for harvesting rice or reeds, a thicc boi like this one would be a digger for tubers and root vegetables.
Farming tool, but as a weapon it sometimes had a chain attached to the handle.
farming implements and as improvised weapons
The 2Cr13 is not as bad as you would think because it can get up to about 52-54HRC wich is pretty good for tools like this. also some knifemaker use steel wich also only gets up to 54HRC to make decent blades. mostly we are spoiled with our 60-62HRC knifes wich in some cases are not even as good because they break and chip fairly easy. and if you think about swords, a well tempered sword will have also not more than 54HRC otherwise it would break in kombat. most swords have 50-54HRC wich ist very springy, but it also depends on the steel that was used. we have so many different steel types today and some of them are better, wile others are not as good as you would think they are.
With a sickle, if you are trying to stab with the tip, you either need the handle to be recurved or the blade not to be curved. A curved blade with a straight handle makes it so that you can't easily aim where the tip will end up, which can make stabs and parries very difficult. In the video, you just stab at a torso, which doesn't require aiming, but even if you were just using it as a warpick, it still wouldn't work very well if you were trying to aim for something like a weak spot in armor or a limb joint.
I'd be interested in seeing you review other M48 stuff like the warhammer or spear
inb4 the hammer's head snaps off from hitting the target, and soars into a windshield.
I know zombie go boom did a test with the m48 kukri and I'd love to see what Skall thinks of it
Its blade is *E X T R A T H I C C* .
T h i c c t i c a l K a m a
Too bad it doesn't have a *T H I C C* pommel.
You know, to end people *T H I C C* -ly. :P
You could end people *T H I C C* -ly with *T H I N N* pommel too
am wet
This and a hammer made the Soviet Union.
(yes, i know its offically a sickle but whatever)
leo233357 as far as I can tell the only difference between a this and a regular sickle is the country of origin I've used both varieties and I'm honestly coming up short with differences
FMJackal are you a Nazi
I got an M48 stinger defensive spike recently .
I love spikes for defense and throwing.
I have the two handed warhammer from the same company, it's also got that tactical design with a pretty much identical handle
OK, taking it seriously for a moment... you advance, strike and hit. How do you disengage? Or do you just hang out and wait for your foe's demise?
Richard DeLotto honestly... fight with a shield a drag them by the huge stab wound? I'm just guessing here...
With a normal blade, that would be much thinner and sharper, you could yank it out as you disengage, doing even more damage as you tear a much larger hole. With this... I don't know, but if a weapon can't function defensively without a shield, then I don't see how it could be used in modern warfare, as shields are virtually useless dinner plates. That being said, striking a fast killing blow with this is likely far easier then with a knife.
Richard DeLotto I guess you need to attack strategically as to compromise their mobility or effectiveness. A place around the shoulder could practically disable someone.
You use it as an opener before the pommel throwing begins.
Bucklers are far from useless (for values of useless that include thoughts about swords, shields and whatnot in modern combat), but, block with shield, capture Kama, dispatch foe at leisure, hang Kama on wall as part of Idiot Stick collection.. Even in the WORST sparring I have done no one ever stood still.
Kama kama kama kama kama chameleon... XD
You come and go
You reap then sow, you reap then sowwwwwww whoa oh.
As soon as someone is murdered with one, the "tactical kama" will be labeled an "assault kama"
I wonder what a bump stock would look like on one of these
I've been a knife (& blades in general) dealer in the past. I carried the United Cutlery M48 tomahawks. These had exceptional reports from many customers. A "review" site on UA-cam performed torture tests on several similar tools, and the UC M48 were the only ones they COULD NOT BREAK. I was surprised, since UC did not have the best reputation at that time (last in 2011-2012).
BTW, the vast majority of Buck knives are made from 420HC.
reinforced nylon typically means it has fiberglass replacing up to 30-40% of the ash filler. increases shear strength and reduces impact deformation.
Sorry but I didn't see any of these comments so I have to add my own.
It has no pommel to end your opponent rightly 0/10 would not recommend.
"The Chinese version of 420"
BRAZE IT
nice
You should really try throwing it
You should test m48 tomahawk. It's pretty cheap ($30)and is actually very effective. It cuts wood very well for being a "tactical" tomahawk.
Thats when you have a sword and this, this should be able to control a weapon pretty easy, add protection around the hand and you can easily control most weapons
2:20 Imagine using High-Quality Steel for that...
not tactical/10
M48 Tactical Kama vs Boi with .22 Pistol
You said it is extremely corrosion resistant, and not very practical as a tool. Have you ever been ice-fishing? This kama would be super handy for when you're ice-fishing in still cold below 25 degrees celsius, and the hole freezes over with your line still through it.
The manufacturer overlooked a possible improvement: Have another buttoning strap on the other side of the sheath, so the user could easily attach the sheath with the kama to his/her belt.
Tactical? I was hoping it fold into one piece or something like that, but it’s just a Kama wtf
Folding would be nice, but a solid one would mean less parts to break, easier to clean, and cheaper to make.
@@niccatipay
It should have a Laser pointer
There is a folding one,the CBR 343
A tactical weapon for when you're cutting grass
Or rice
Looks like something someone wold use to hunt baby seals
Adriano Moratelli Fonini you use clubs for that
I greatly appreciate your videos. You're one of the most educational and comprehensive while being so in depth that I've come across.
It would be nice to see more M48 reviews. They have quite a large line/assortment. As far as cheap stuff, I've fallen in love with their designs and appreciate the thickness' they make. I've only recently bought some, like the cyclone push dagger and a 'trench knife'. I've been waiting for a good trench knife design to try. I haven't had time to do anything with them yet. Really curious about much of the line that they put out. The 'factory' edge seems to need a bit of work: I was thinking of using my axe/machete sharpener on them to get them to a better battle ready edge (as I'm extremely time challenged with work and all).
Over the years I have come to gravitate more to club and spear point (double edge) weapons, as I finally learned that slashing is highly overrated.
I would try throwing it, I purchased two of the m48 Hawks by United cutlery a while back, they seem to have the same kind of handle set up
I was nervous about it at first, especially since I was new to hawk throwing, but neither of them have broken despite my many failed throws.
More then a few times I've felt like a throw would be it's certain doom, but it would surprise me each time by surviving it with just a scuff from the dirt or wood it hit. This was my experience at least, not sure if it would be the same for the Kama.
