MisterDeth0 or actually a pretty usable camping tool! Decent enough for making firewood, tinder, probably good at cutting up meat, as well as a decent firepoker, and a lot of other makeshift uses. Maybe not good enough for fighting off a bear or killing an animal now, but if you have it in your car as an “in case of emergency look badass” thing, it would definitely have its uses.... just keep a rubber mallet with it and it should be fine
Aye dude pulls that from under his seat or out the trunk....me personally? After such a encounter, ill wish i had worn my brown pants...and my red shirt lol
+Dee L.C Well, you always got other zombies as protection, don't you? Think of the gatling gun enemy in Resident Evil 4. He'll happily gun down all other zombies in your general vicinity. Also, even gun using (for whatever reason) zombies gotta reload at some point, that's when you can use the sword ;)
Very strong was that machete when it was made whole again; the viscera of his foes dripped readily from it, and the bodies in it's wake grew cold, and its blade was wicked and unyielding. And Skallagrim gave it a new name and called it Beinsamler, Reaver of the North.
Oh gods... My heart dropped at 9:14. I'm sure yours must have also when it happened. That said, I have to agree, it did show just how tough this thing is. And as crazy as it sounds, if I had the cash, I'd definitely consider getting one of these, even with the weight it has. It has a rather nice profile, and one can't help but be impressed with such a beastly chopper. Though to be honest, the two ZT weapons that I'm really interested in are the Rat Bastard and the Diphos.
I can imagine that Skall would walk into a book store, grab 10 phone books and go up to the till and act completely normal. Meanwhile the person working at the till is so confused as to why he has so many phone books. XD
As are most fascinating things. While I have the opportunity I would like to say I rather enjoy your videos. Love your approach. Weird computer glitch makin it hard to reply. I'd love to get involved in Hema and weapon martial arts.
Under $400, great steel, good design, looks awesome, I might get one. You know if you collect all the parts, assemble them with a bit of space between parts on a plaque, that would make a really nice display piece.
I live in the town where this was made, and I've been in the shop where they work and had a few beers with them. These guys really do take good care in making their stuff and they're proud of their work.
Despite the damage to the cleaver being terrible, you have made something that would be more useful in close quarters combat. It has lost the intimidation factor that it had before, but would now be much more agile indoors or in up close combat. I am not saying that anyone should do this with their weapon, I am just making lemonade from lemons.
Did you know that the ZT crew still talk about this video in 2022? This video was a conversation starter that cost me two packs of beer to hear what they thought of someone shooting their blades.
***** These types of videos make me want to design a sword and send it to you, take your advice on the blade, and craft a new one to your specifications.
***** I audibly gasped when i saw the explosion of metal shards where the blade used to be. Was NOT expecting that! In a way this was also a good review for the power of an AK round ;)
evalroach666 For 7.62x39 FMJ is the normal round. Most of it is milsurplus and hollow points are banned for military use. At least this is what it's like in the states. I assume Canada is similar in that regard.
I'm from canada and yes the the milsurp crap is FMJ I was wondering if it was a hunting round (hollow point etc) or Full Metal Jacket, also I own a SKS and have seen the brutal effects of FMJ on metal targets
Great review! The best I've seen on the ZT line. I just got the Vakra and hopefully I can give a review that is half as good. My condolences on your loss. But you can't achieve greatness without pushing boundaries.
I came back from the New Zombie Tools review video. Looking at this video and especially how Skall hid the broken blade for most of the video is very funny.
I'm at 11:00 ... You shot it, it broke... Well look on the Bright side, you now have a Long Handle badass Axe blade skall. You can still use whats left if the blade for Axe work. :)
YT reccommended me this video after I watched the latest vid of the sword spear where he referenced the moment of breaking this blade. YT has a nice sense of humour at times lol
That is one tough blade. Another factor could have been that the impact point was near where you clamped it, limiting its ability to dissipate some of the energy by vibration, but that probably wouldn't have been enough anyway. I really want one!
***** Hey Skall. You once showed an animation which showed that a longsword consists of the blade and the guard (1 piece). The grip and pommel are put on later. What if it would be all a 1-part steel and the grip covered with some sort of lether (or other soft meterial) ??? Somehow like the Zombie Cleaver.
***** you sounded so sheepish! I'll be honest, that footage of you shooting the gun made me laugh (to cope with the pain!) because i just imagined you imagining the test, testing it and then the immediate reaction.
I was taught young that when it comes to things your life would depend on,to get two,and test one to extinction. Not sure this is what my grandmother had in mind.
***** you clearly left your common sense at home that day! Way to take the test beyond the limits though. I was impressed that the .22 didn't do more damage. Great video! Looking forward to more.
Arshan Hasan Well, although I would be more interested in different models it would still be very nice to get the Reaver Cleaver back. How much would you want for your spare one?
***** I was actually going to send it as a gift, but when you expressed interest in getting something else I gave it to someone else. This is . . . rather tragic.
Plate steel targets don't break even with .303 rounds because they are mobile. When hit, they fall or spin to dissipate the kinetic energy from the round. The blade was fixed, so it absorbed the impact completely; shattering the blade.
Glen Phenix It also depends on the types of steel. With recent innovations, fixed plates can withstand rounds up to .45 magnum if not greater. AR500 plates are amazing.
"I was surprised it broke when I shot it with a round that can shatter concrete walls quite easily" I don't know how much steel exactly it would take to stop a 7.62x39, but it's more than two of those. It's a really powerful round. Either way, it was for science. I like your stuff, I hope to see more like this in the future.
Hilarious. My band mate Sarah is laughing because I have become obsessed with watching your hand weapon videos to wind down after a day in the studio. Your a great performer. I love it.
dam! just to give u a idea of the power of a 7.62x39 its has about 1400 ft lbs at the muzzle, a 9mm is about 350 ft lbs,a 40 s&w is about 525 ft lbs, a 44 mag is around 900-1000 ft lbs. be glad you didn't use a 7.62 x 51 that's about 2,600 ft lbs lol
There was a test of firing 50 bmg toward the sharpened edge of a well made Katana. Each hit took a decent chunk from the blade but it survived 5 shots before snapping in half on the sixth.
Yes, I did. Steel targets for rifle shooting are not much thicker than the blade. The mistake I made was to forget that such targets are made of much harder steel, and I definitely underestimated exactly how powerful that cartridge is.
***** Steel targets for shooting are typically AR500 steel ie 500 on the hardness scale, that military surplus ammo is steel core as well. I have shot through 1/2" diamond plate steel with my mosin, like a hot knife through butter.
Actually if you watch some videos from zombie tools, I took them beating it repeatedly against a concrete crash barrier to destroy the original deuce sword. I don't think even cold steel swords could handle that kind of abuse.
I think hardness is actually harmful in that case. To withstand a force like this i think flexibility is the right factor, not hardness (Hardness -> Easier to shatter)
Oh my, I usually only feel pangs of sadness for machinery or computer parts that are purposely abused to their breaking points, but man, my chest tightened up when the bullet hit the blade. Although I'd never be able to do this, I commend you for testing the blade up to the point you thought at the time was a good test.
The finish difference between the bevel and the flat is due to the steel's as-forged finish left on the blade stock. It has a bit of dimpling left by the forging on the flats, so the finish they apply sticks better and looks better on the flats than it does on the machine finished bevels.
Just throwing this out there, but good lord dude, I didn't know I needed this before I saw the review, and now I'm waiting for the good folks and Zombie Tools to make and ship me a Mack Daddy-O (You know, the Reaver Cleaver, but bigger.) Keep being awesome!
Skall himself has said having no guard doesnt mean it's less good. This reaver is perhaps deadlier than most high-quality swords in a wielder skilled to use it. The strength it possesses should more than make up for its weaknesses if well used.
so it's still usable at least. make an angle cut from the back to the front to resemble a scramasax blade, sharpen the top and you have a good point and additional edge for more destructive capabilities. Love the fact that eve when damaged to this degree it's still usable.
You don't have to be a smart ass about it. It's the same shit just slightly different details and only shoots semi. It even fires the same calibur of round. It's like me saying look at that M16. No that's actually an AR-15. Same shit
The SKS was designed by a different man, years before the AK, used a different action, had an internal magazine fed by a stripper clip and really only had one similarity to the AK, which was the round it was chambered in. No it was absolutely not the same as calling an M16 an AR-15. The SKS and AK are completely different rifles.
James TheWulfMan Plummer my bad for the sks comparison, for some reason i thought you and Skall said AKS. The short part in the video where Skall brought the rifle up looked like the front of an AKS-74 since they're all black as well. My mistake
I'm pretty freaking impressed. Most blades would be swiss cheese long before what it took to kill this monster. The even crazier part? Yeah, you blew off about 2/5 of the blade. Yet, the rest is in one piece, still sharp and sturdy... You could probably still use it to nearly full effect even after the end got blown off. Maybe re-grind the snapped end to make it smooth, or even put a nasty gut hook on it. That is one impressive piece of steel. If I had the cash to drop on it, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
Uhm...... why would you even shoot at a sword/blade in the first place? Like, what purpose does that have? It seems like a ridiculously pointless risk you're just taking because you happen to own firearms. :P
Based God I have no beard. :P And I know he was testing it. I just think that shooting at it is a pointless risk to take just for the sake of "testing".
he wanted to see how far he could push it. he even said "this isnt going to happen if you are just chopping". it was a durability test. he didnt actually think the purpose was to deflect bullets
The minute I saw that broken blade my heart nearly had an attack and my jaw dropped, I hate seeing a weapon like that get destroyed. BUT much like skallgram, I was impressed. :3
Hey man. I am glad you did shoot that blade. I have zero experience with firearms (live in the U.K) but I do have experience with blades (martial arts weapons practitioner). To see a cleaver that could cut through a phone book get absolutely shattered by a gun like that was a bit of a surprise. I had no idea that assault rifles had that kind of destructive power, it made that cleaver look like it was made of graphite. All the trolls will have something to say I am sure about how much of a noob I am but honestly this just made me glad the U.K isn't like the U.S when it comes to gun control.
+Ross Lavery 7.62x39 ball rounds can penetrate 5mm of RHA (Rolled Homogenous Armour) Steel (and keep in mind, this 5mm thick blade was NOT made out of steel that was specifically designed to be used as armour), while 5.56x45 (.22) ball can only penetrate 2mm of RHA Steel. So the results of the firearms tests are entirely to be expected.
+Chris Yes bullets are no more dangerous than knives? Can you in all honesty claim that someone with a knife has the same potential to take down the same numbers as someone with a machine gun. it isn't about pentrative or stopping power is it, it's about output and tactical advantage. Guy stabs someone and gets tackled, game over. Guy with a machine gun keeps a few hundred feet from himself to any opponents and can kill huge numbers, unchallenged. Also let's not even bother getting onto the potential of snipers. Please don't say that the best defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Me personally I am just glad that guns are so rare on the streets of the UK, just a matter of peace of mind.
***** You are using raw numbers and ignoring the individual circumstances of those reports. More individual crimes, but how many people were killed in each 'crime'? One person gets stabbed and then the attacker is stopped, man with a gun can go on killing sprees for hours before they can be put down. Every gun attack I can think of was just an absolute slaughter, killing large numbers of people in just a few minutes. Most of these knife attacks you refer to could be absolutely anything... crazy wife decides to stab her husband? Two working class morons can't articulate their arguments properly or one sleeps with the other's partner? We are not talking literally walking into a public area and firing hundreds of bullets a second into everyone in sight...
I got my beautiful kukri machete from amazon and it’s a bit heavy by I couldn’t have been happier because I paid less for it than I was supposed to 😂. I got a cheaper version and they ended up giving me the wrong one but the “wrong one” was a whole lot more expensive than the one I ordered and it was hand made and beautifully crafted
and the reason it shattered instead of having a hole put through it was the type of metal it was high carbon spring steel. spring steel is very tough against bending and cutting however it is brittle and with enough shock it will shatter like glass. my 440c ninjato is a decent balance but i don't abuse it like shooting it with a 7.62 rifle round. it is however able to cut clean through a four inch thick oak wood dowel.
That seems like one hell of a weapon. It IS a shame that you destroyed it, but it's amazing that it took such overkill to crack it. That shows that it was a lot of bang for your buck.
Idk if you already know but just a little fun fact, the handle wrap is made for aluminum baseball bats so if you ever need to redo a sword you know you can get that from a sporting goods store
I do very much like the look of the Reaver Cleaver. It's in line with what a well-designed fantasy weapon should be: stylish enough that it is clearly fantasy, without being ridiculous.
On the bright side, you now have a very unique kitchen knife.

That is one tough blade. Another factor could have been that the impact point was near where you clamped it, limiting its ability to dissipate some of the energy by vibration, but that probably wouldn't have been enough anyway.

Chromium, +4 Toughness; Carbon, +6 Hardness, Uranium, +50% Area Of Effect +1 damage per second for life!
Not even +4 Toughness can defeat R I F L E
knowing the limits of any blade or weapon is always a good thing, knowledge is power used for good or ill.
If you had the sword hanging with a string, I wonder if it would deflect rather than shatter.
that's a very interesting thought...
Probably similar to shooting a hanging gong.
The finish difference between the bevel and the flat is due to the steel's as-forged finish left on the blade stock. It has a bit of dimpling left by the forging on the flats, so the finish they apply sticks better and looks better on the flats than it does on the machine finished bevels.
"If you don't like destructive tests then move on."
Me: How bad could it be-(GASP)
Me: ;A;
Just throwing this out there, but good lord dude, I didn't know I needed this before I saw the review, and now I'm waiting for the good folks and Zombie Tools to make and ship me a Mack Daddy-O (You know, the Reaver Cleaver, but bigger.)
Keep being awesome!
Yeah... but i can imagine how a weapon like that would work in a medieval battle.
It probably wouldn't work very well at all
No guard
He said battle, not duel...
Nanael OverLock well it's pretty much a Chinese dadao, so it was used for battle before.
Skall himself has said having no guard doesnt mean it's less good. This reaver is perhaps deadlier than most high-quality swords in a wielder skilled to use it. The strength it possesses should more than make up for its weaknesses if well used.
That was some Forged in Fire level testing XP
It's a nice knife but I cannot really find it usefull. A bit too big to carry around.
Why would you think that it could take a AK-47 round?
Limits or nothin
Its a sword. An apocalyptic version of a dadao
Its a big thick chunk of steel
Thats not a knife, its a sword
"Knife? That's not a knife. THIS is a knife."
so it's still usable at least. make an angle cut from the back to the front to resemble a scramasax blade, sharpen the top and you have a good point and additional edge for more destructive capabilities. Love the fact that eve when damaged to this degree it's still usable.
HAHAHA YOU SHOT IT WITH AN AK XD nice
+Roman Zadorozhnyy An SKS*
My mistake
Roman Zadorozhnyy Forgiven, have a nice day.
9:50 The definition of "Never bring a knife a gun fight." :))
it is broken now...

*****
Well, atleast we know you shouldn't use it as a bullet shield against bandits in the zombie apocalypse. xP
weeruz hey just get a riot shield would be usefull in zombie apacolyspe :P
I love the little gasp when Skall realized what he'd done 😂😂😂
So pretty :) ... wait... what... NOOOOOOOO
If I had the cash to drop on it, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
leave it to a Canadian to underestimate power of a gun =D
RIP the Reaver Cleaver. Beautiful weapon.
Uhm...... why would you even shoot at a sword/blade in the first place? Like, what purpose does that have? It seems like a ridiculously pointless risk you're just taking because you happen to own firearms. :P
Based God I have no beard. :P
And I know he was testing it. I just think that shooting at it is a pointless risk to take just for the sake of "testing".
kurvos DURABILITY
he wanted to see how far he could push it. he even said "this isnt going to happen if you are just chopping". it was a durability test. he didnt actually think the purpose was to deflect bullets
The minute I saw that broken blade my heart nearly had an attack and my jaw dropped, I hate seeing a weapon like that get destroyed. BUT much like skallgram, I was impressed. :3
every single steel is an "alloy"....
Iron and carbon
exactly
Post apocalyptic finish was probably from a 2 hour vinegar bath which actually strengthens by adding patina. I think I'll buy one of these, we'll see.
AK 47 vs a sword
AK 47 wins.
not an ak dipshit
@@cuckpatroller1153 triggered much?
Me personally I am just glad that guns are so rare on the streets of the UK, just a matter of peace of mind.
didn't the crime rate go up after guns were banned? I know the amount of murders with blades and blunt objects did.
Ross Lavery unfortunately case by case is largely ignored
I got my beautiful kukri machete from amazon and it’s a bit heavy by I couldn’t have been happier because I paid less for it than I was supposed to 😂. I got a cheaper version and they ended up giving me the wrong one but the “wrong one” was a whole lot more expensive than the one I ordered and it was hand made and beautifully crafted
Lol 762x39 beats sword at range any day. That surprised me and made my evening. Awesome vid !
As an AK fanboy this test still makes me happy haha
and the reason it shattered instead of having a hole put through it was the type of metal it was high carbon spring steel. spring steel is very tough against bending and cutting however it is brittle and with enough shock it will shatter like glass. my 440c ninjato is a decent balance but i don't abuse it like shooting it with a 7.62 rifle round. it is however able to cut clean through a four inch thick oak wood dowel.
It's nice to have a blade that can deflect bullets. Keep searching.
The broken blade still looks like a good machete.
The end, my heart..
That seems like one hell of a weapon.
It IS a shame that you destroyed it, but it's amazing that it took such overkill to crack it.
That shows that it was a lot of bang for your buck.
It's still a great kitchen knife, lol.
I'd use it as a cleaver in a heartbeat!
The Reaver cleaver, probably the best laxative, if I've ever seen one.
Just got one of the karambit versions, loving it
