What is the possibility that the sword edge could get lodged in the wood? I know this would make both weapons essentially useless until they were pulled apart. I am just asking too not trying to troll or be a smartass.
I like the other guy. Doesn't speak on his own, and whenever he does speak, he is just sympathetic to whatever happened. He's just there for you. What a champ.
I also thought it was cool how they explained the safety difference in comparison to how a true fight would look/work. That was new info and I will watch other show/display fights differently now:)
One thing I found really interesting about this is that the footwork seems to be the most important piece, because even with the reach disadvantage the sword user was still able to counter in certain circumstances with proper parry and counter techniques. All that said this was an awesome demonstration, thanks for sharing!
mainly cause he's out of measure. If he was in measure some of these blows if delivered with the intent to harm while pressing the point of impact forward the staff would easily go through the guard. Regardless of parry. The buttress added at the end of a QS to enhance the weight-to-end of the QS makes them more deadly and heavier to even attempt to deflect. Which would force the sword user to not only shift angle but to attempt to 'flee' the blows each time... Or face a rigid blow to the face or arm, either would put you out of the fight effectively. A broken fore-arm kills just as well as a caved in skull. for a sword user. I'd rather a shield to skate the blows away personally. But if you don't have that option you're effectively boned against someone with a reach advantage. Even with good armor.
Oh yeah bud I'd give him extra credit for sound too! For the distance, complexity and the execution of the fighting moves I bet it's pretty hard to record. Mikes can fall off.
Those lav mics can be sneaky buggers with falling off or just not working indeed, and in a full contact fight where both wear protection that + the transmitter/recording part can be a bit fragile too. The contrast of sound quality difference from the camera when Erik wasn't wearing his mask and commented on things compared to the mic on Skallagrim is huge.
@@DeagleGamesTV Exactly! Less weight. It's hard to block a heavy object with a light buckler (not my language i'm trying ok), also it's easier to block a stab and counterattack if you don't have to block in the exact pinpoint location of the blow.
Bo and later Jo were proper weapons studied by Samurai and professional warriors in Japan, for example by a kind of police force. They can be very effective, quite like Skall demonstrates with the quarterstaff. The Jo, specifically, sacrifices range to gain more flexibility and allow for both ends being used in fights. For example a prepared overhead strike can easily be transformed into a stabbing and vice versa.
It seems to me (layman) that placed in this scenario the swordsman would need to close the gap to eliminate the majority of the momentum. As you said two people of equal skill the staff may win simply due to its reach. I'd see it a a battle of foot work, attempting to close and extend the gap to suit your weapons range.
that is mostly likely what would happen, a battle where the swordsmen and continuously trying to move forward within the staff users effective range while the staff user is trying to step back while also countering with thrusts to force the sword user to step back aswell.
The problem is you can pull a spear back in close range and jab still. The actual strat I feel is to slow the staff/spear down and grab it with you offhand while going for a strike

I'm here because I'm listening to The Wheel of Time book series by Robert Jordan, and one of the characters is a farmer (well trained at staff, and being a farmer also means using staff like objects a lot) who beats two trained swordsmen with a staff in a wager. Came here to find out that the staff does have real life advantages over a sword.
Trains they did but it's a total power creep these muskets and flintlock weapons are stupidly op. I bet they are gonna add some highly unrealistic weapon that makes it rain ammunition or something....
Nah, simple pyromancy attacks are really effective against wooden staff wielders, burns right through their guards; basically an instant guard break. Also, does 2x damage to the weapon itself, making it less effective. Stupid DPS sword wielders wanting nerfs to be made to make them OP again.
My Father told me once about a Samurai exhibition that took place in New Zealand about 45 to 50 years ago when he was a kid. The Samurai challenged anyone to come down for a spar and a Maori (NZ native) man went down with his Taiaha (staff type weapon). The man with the wooden staff beat the Samurai with a steele sword multiple times without a loss. It comes down to the skill of the person at the end of the day.
Junichiro Yamashita I own one, absolutely love it. Lived in NZ for several years and trained with some old guys who used to compete in Taiaha. I won’t claim to be good but it’s certainly fun to use
Pole arms are usually superior to swords, even the masters like George Silver stated this way back during the 15th to 16th century and they would know.
@@shaundouglas2057 Well yeah, I'm sure any soldier from the ancient or medieval period who had fought with polearms knew how deadly they were compared to swords.

@Lance YT Like airsoft? This way no one bleeds too heavily. Just because something is old, like swordfights and stuff, doesn't mean you can't have fun! Plus, in places where guns are illegal, this may come much more in handy. Just tryin to put some perspective on this.
Take Out true, because they didn't make enemies bleed out or crush bones or pierce armor as effectively as specialized weaponry (swords, maces, spears). But never underestimate the deadliness of a long piece of hard wood, even if it's not specialized as a weapon of war.
staffs have always been effective weapons, if only because their so basic. because the entire staff can be gripped effectively more or less anywhere with the right practice, and be used to strike at any portion, with any grip, its just about as adaptable as unarmed fighting, without having to sacrifice your pretty hands. thats why its such a staple of martial arts. i honestly couldnt tell you why they arent in fashion right now, since their like the ultimate answer to a knife. h2h is almost useless against a small blade like that because your trying to block him with more of his targets. but with a staff, you have something solid, something useful enough as a utility that you could carry it around for other reasons, and scavenge serviceable (if temporary) replacements from broom handles at a moments notice, all while having a huge reach advantage, and KO potential, while remaining relatively nonlethal, thus keeping yourself safely within the bounds of self defense law. plus, their so basic and simple, that they can be used by relatively untrained fighters with a reasonable degree of success, without detracting from their capabilities in the hands of an advanced fighter. add to all of this the fact that you can still kick people in the face (i do TKD, and i think i have a face-kicking problem, dont judge me) wile using one, and it can in fact elevate your ability to do so, gaining height and airtime with a jumping kick, general mobility with pole-vaults, and a second balance point for the more challenging kicks, without having to sacrifice your stance to the point of placing your hand on the ground like you see the green arrow do on the CW all the damn time. plus, they would never need a license basically anywhere on earth, since their definitely not concealed carry, and have no blades. you might look a bit weird, but on the other hand, people might not like their odds against you when our better armed, and not even try.
I mean you could attach pommels at both ends of the staff for more impact and it allows you to end two people rightly. Truly the Ultimate weapon. Also Donatello approves.
There's a lot of different techniques for the staff as well. Watching all these videos made me acknowledge how strong staffs are and I'd say even have the edge over a lot of melee weapons
SilverSidedSquirrel Yes. But then they did take that story straight out of Japanese history and stories. It's originally, and more importantly: in reality, a story told by Miyamoto Musashi. As an added fact in his very first own duel as a 13 year old he himself wielded a 6' quarterstaff and easily dispatched and killed his wakizashi wielding opponent Arima Kihei.
This article explains why polearms hit so hard: swordstem.com/2019/05/01/why-do-polearms-hurt/ And here is a video to answer the question if you can just cut through the staff: ua-cam.com/video/_Fa-3gUhxC0/v-deo.html
Now I wanna see more quarterstaves in fiction, I'd love to see some full on combat with this thing like with the sabers but it's pretty clear why it can't be done to the same degree with the staff.
With all the advanced weapons of the period a big stick, even without a steel head be it a halberd or bill hook or spear point, is still more than a match for a sword. Amazing. Good video Skall, I really enjoyed this one.
Not to mention production costs. You can tell that not only does a staff weapon have low cost and production time compared to a full metal weapon, (Well crafted swords) it also used movements that most peasants, that were armed with said staffs, used in their daily peaceful life with farming and gardening tools. Their muscles were accustomed already, and little actual training was needed for a decent skill level with the spear. I dare say that the spear or staffs range advantage have been easing the psychological pressure of peasant warriors who were levied into military service.
"where do you get the idea that a staff would be superior in this scenario?" Where do you get the idea that anybody was talking about the scenario in the video? "because the sword wielder just stands there doing static blocks while skal hits him with long and telegraphed attacks" I don't think the video's title is "Sword vs Staff - how to telegraph".
@1:25 The reason it is more powerful is because of Angular Momentum. A longer stick, the end will be further away from the axis of rotation, thus the further end will have a higher rate of speed. It must have a higher rate of speed because it has more distances to cover in the arc relative to axis of rotation. Thus further away faster the speed. Momentum is mass times velocity or p=mv. The faster the object, the more momentum..... the higher the Momentum the higher the Force will be on impact. This is what He referrers to as "oomph" I
I think the fighting techniques with the staff would be very different from these more sword-like movements. I've done a bit of it, and it's more swirling movements to hit into joints, back of legs and arms, and generally more rapier movements in terms of facing swords. I'd love to see you guys do more of staff fighting, though, I'm quite convinved that an advanced staffer can best any but the best swordsman.
I love swords and feel personally attacked when I see other weapons being superior (apart from guns and modern weapons, because of course they're superior). 😂
As with any fighting style underestimating your opponent is generally a bad idea. Even complete noobs get lucky or competent fighters make glaring mistakes (especially when they know they have an advantage or higher skill).
The sword's advantage is that it's the most nimble and effective weapon used combined with a shield. A top heavy weapon + shield is good against armored opponents, but isn't as quick or balanced. A spear + shield has a slight reach advantage but again, isn't as balanced.
This video actually gave me the inspiration to make a staff wielding fantasy hero. His staff is made of ash with caps on both ends, and langets to reinforce the caps
What about that one technique where the sword user knocks down the staff user and crushes his skull while confessing the rape and murder of his sister and the killing of her children?
The quarterstaff is truly an underestimated weapon. Also does well against an unarmed aggressor, cross checks and grappling and throwing with the butt end of your staff. An ideal addition too, is to add an alpine spike to the butt end, and a steel or brass ferrule at the striking end. 🤙
I find it funny that despite hundreds of years of advances in metallurgy and refinement of the blades and swordsmanship the good ol stick still remains a proper contender.
@@omegalongdong I don't know about that. The blunt force of maces was pretty lethal against most armor, but then again, a lot of maces had spikes etc. A good hit with the staff to the head or the side of the knee should still do the trick though.
@@skullinthejar a staff does absolutely nothing against a knight in heavy armor, even greatswords struggle to penetrate heavy armor, historically knight would get close, start wrestling, get the opponent to the ground and try to exploit the weaknesses in the armor with a short dagger, in this dumb game one handed swords have no problen cutting throught heavy armor or chainmail.
@@omegalongdong But that's the thing; blunt weapons don't try to *pierce* the armor. Instead, a mace would simply break the bones underneath the armor, and probably dent the armor too, possibly causing problems if a large enough dent is made in a critical place. And as I stated before, blunt force trauma is especially good against heads, since a good wack with a staff or mace will give you a concussion even if your skull is still intact. One thing I found really interesting about this is that the footwork seems to be the most important piece, because even with the reach disadvantage the sword user was still able to counter in certain circumstances with proper parry and counter techniques. All that said this was an awesome demonstration, thanks for sharing!
@Foul Homie121 he was just kidding
@Foul Homie121 I honestly can't tell if you're trolling or not
mainly cause he's out of measure.

Take Out true, because they didn't make enemies bleed out or crush bones or pierce armor as effectively as specialized weaponry (swords, maces, spears). But never underestimate the deadliness of a long piece of hard wood, even if it's not specialized as a weapon of war.
Yep. Not to mention the iron staves some military forces used
I prefer my staff as a way to channel my power so i can melt my enemies or cause earthquakes. Otherwise i like swords.
staffs have always been effective weapons, if only because their so basic. because the entire staff can be gripped effectively more or less anywhere with the right practice, and be used to strike at any portion, with any grip, its just about as adaptable as unarmed fighting, without having to sacrifice your pretty hands. thats why its such a staple of martial arts. i honestly couldnt tell you why they arent in fashion right now, since their like the ultimate answer to a knife. h2h is almost useless against a small blade like that because your trying to block him with more of his targets. but with a staff, you have something solid, something useful enough as a utility that you could carry it around for other reasons, and scavenge serviceable (if temporary) replacements from broom handles at a moments notice, all while having a huge reach advantage, and KO potential, while remaining relatively nonlethal, thus keeping yourself safely within the bounds of self defense law. plus, their so basic and simple, that they can be used by relatively untrained fighters with a reasonable degree of success, without detracting from their capabilities in the hands of an advanced fighter. add to all of this the fact that you can still kick people in the face (i do TKD, and i think i have a face-kicking problem, dont judge me) wile using one, and it can in fact elevate your ability to do so, gaining height and airtime with a jumping kick, general mobility with pole-vaults, and a second balance point for the more challenging kicks, without having to sacrifice your stance to the point of placing your hand on the ground like you see the green arrow do on the CW all the damn time. plus, they would never need a license basically anywhere on earth, since their definitely not concealed carry, and have no blades. you might look a bit weird, but on the other hand, people might not like their odds against you when our better armed, and not even try.
Of course the sword struggles against the staff, the swordsman was in stone stance. Wind stance is most effective against spearmen!

Johannes Von Volker as with most warfare even today... range is king
depends on the user, yeah?
the user is certainly a variable, but if both combatants are of roughly even skill and physicality, then having a weapon advantage can go a long way
Not to mention production costs.

This is what He referrers to as "oomph" I
Swordsman: I must break his staff in half
Staffsman: No u...

Nah bro he just ran outta mana
The sword's advantage is that it's the most nimble and effective weapon used combined with a shield. A top heavy weapon + shield is good against armored opponents, but isn't as quick or balanced. A spear + shield has a slight reach advantage but again, isn't as balanced.
Look into Bo-jutsu or Jodo fighting demonstrations if you're looking for more fleshed out (japanese style) stick fighting

The technique is called "Wait until your opponent does something stupid, like let go of his weapon and get on top of you."
But it is useless against an armored knight
