Great, first time I have seen the comparison between old and new train sizes. So much more space now.
The reason the old pre-tube train from like the 40s is so small is because it had to fit through the small tunnels of the old London Underground, and the pre-tube train from the 70s (heavily refurbished) didn’t need to fit through tight spaces.
Epic! Nice to see a 483 & 484 in one shot, shame 006 has been grafited though.
The graffiti is one thing, seen a whole lot worse as it's only a tag on this instance. Sad to see the last 483 on its last journey on the Island's rails.....😥
@@petercrispin3781 the whole other side of it that you can't see on this video is covered. Top to bottom, full length
Agree, grafitti awful.
At least it's just a nasty tag and not some great big art mess along the side of the train! nothing a bit of Warning yellow won't fix in 20 minutes of a brush!
@@Thunderer0872 the other side of the train head to toe is covered
As someone who loves the island line since it is so unique, it is sad to see the old stock go but I also understand the reliability is a huge factor in the swap. Hopefully, with more reliable equipment, the line can survive and maybe even grow?
Ryde depot did a fantastic job towards the end of 2020. Bearing in mind they had three 483s left, getting one into service each day was incredible.
Some of the units might be going to heritage railways so they might get done up. But it is time for new trains. Whether the network will be able to grow or not I don't know. Quite possibly not (you have a lot of 'obstacles' to deal with & the Benefit Cost Ratio would probably be too low (I am speaking as someone with 7 years experience on rail projects and not as an armchair expert). Saying that it might be possible/viable to get it as far as Ventnor, how close to the centre of town (I am not sure where the original station was) I don't know. Although you would need a passing loop at Shanklin to maintain a half hour frequency.
@@tom201090 not a “might”. 007 is at IoWSR, 006 is going to LTTG to join 008.
@@bfapple That's good. Unless they convert it to diesel (which I think is unlikely) the power will come from a steam or diesel locomotive).
@@tom201090 LTTG are planning to fit batteries.
Until now, I had not realised the height difference between old & new stock.
Thanks for the vlog.
If you ever go to London and travel to one of the stations where the D-Stock trains used to run next to the Picadilly Line (Hammersmith or Barons Court) you can get a good idea of the difference in train height and floor height, when two trains arrive together.
It made sense for deep level trains to be run in London (where the tunnels were smaller) but it never made sense to force Isle of Wight passengers to bend over and get into unnecessary tiny trains. So I'm really glad that the D-Stock trains have been refurbished and are being sent out to modernise the Isle of Wight, and various other places.
I'll be going to visit them, at some point.
the old stock was made for london underground tunnels, which are much smaller than a normal tunnel. the d stock operated on subsurfsce lines which had bgger tunnels as they were built differently
The thing that amazes me the most is the special drawbar between the two different coupler heights
They just happen to have one lying around
It was specially made for this job
Love the makeshift headlamp in the driver's window of the 483! :D
It's a bardic headlight it's an approved one for emergency headlight use. Saves having to charge the batteries and try and get the auxiliaries on 483006 working after 7 months laying doing nothing
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 Thanks for the explanation 👍🏾
I think the auxiliary batteries had a bit more than a little charge in ...
The depot staff didn't know that at the time, it's only when the LTTG got it to Wales and turned it on they had power
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 to be honest, it was quite a surprise when something clunked and a marker light turned on, the next 5 minutes basically consisted of figuring out how to cut in the main lighting circuits
Someone must have written a small set of temporary Operational Rules & Regs to accommodate that move.
SO SAD to see the 38 Stock go.
It's the Uk after all
@@offichannelnurnberg5894 Mate, everything that happens on the railway is risk assessed. That’s why we’re one of the safest in the world.
@@bfapple Not really. Look at India. Many of the safety features (tokens on single lines) were implemented by the British. They didn't have safety before. So it's a british, or let's say western thing.
@@offichannelnurnberg5894 I meant that British railways are statistically one of the safest in the world.
The House of Chilli in Branstone have bought a 2 car set which they will turn into a cafe over the winter, so it will remain on the island.
Great to see this. Couldn't help thinking that the new rolling stock was pushing it all the way to Ryde Pier Head, so it could dump the old LUL stock into the Solent..... 🤣
Can't wait to get back to the IoW to try out the new trains ❤️
That’s interesting.
I’m looking forward to traveling on the new trains soon.
I read that they may look to reopen a line to Newport and Ventor one day.
That’s correct but whether anything beyond talking materialises remains to be seen.
If things did progress the Newport line would have to incorporate the current steam railway and the Ventnor line would be new build beyond Shanklin as little of the original infrastructure remains and the tunnel into Ventnor would require serious work.
@@winco68 I guess it’ll continue to be watch this space.
Didn't think I'd see that! Great catch.
Nice shot James 👍
I notice the platform has been raised to accommodate the new trains.
Certainly has, this has happened at Ryde pier head, Ryde esplanade, Ryde St John's road, Smallbrook, sandown and lake
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 does this mean :( we will never see old tube trains on the island line after the D train is withdrawn :(
The raised platforms can be taken off they re only bolted ontop
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 oh YAY
@@Mgameing123 The S-Stock trains will probably need to be replaced, at some point.
But, I'm hoping that other good quality metro trains, like the 777 trains that Merseyrail have just bought, will be in the running too.
The difference in size is really noticeable here😮
Lool, the size difference is amazing...
Great catch
A sight to behold . Can't wait until nov 1st !
Great catch!
Saw these parked up on roundabout layby at J32 M4 last night. Not sort of thing you see everyday!
Great video. ☺
Hello as ever Josh
Nice catch!
this is fantastic to see
Wow that is rare!
I like the made for it connector between the two trains
The only time it has been used too, it was originally made for when it was just 484001 over here and incase if it failing they'd use a 483 to drag it back to depot but that never happened so this was the couplings only use
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 That's painfully ironic.
That’s super rare to see! Is the island line open now because I said that
That was interesting.
its quite litteraly kicked it of the island 😂
Most definitely has pushed it off thr island 🤣
So cool
Lovely video. How did you get to Smallbrook?
I'm a volunteer/ photographer at havenstreet so when I heard the word about this happening I hopped on the train and came up to smallbrook to captue it
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 Ah that makes sense. So I assume 006 was going to Sandown to be taken off the tracks before heading for Wales
What time did this leave Ryde please and when? I'm intrigued to know how long the journey took and look it up on open train times or rtt lol
No pathings on rtt it left Ryde just after 3pm and travelling at 5mph got to Sandown just after 5pm 😀
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 That's definitely what you call a leisurely pace then lol
The new train seems to be very noisy. I've noticed a few videos with that high pitch wine.
That's the AC motors
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 Thank you for explaining. Now the passengers will be forewarned when it's approaching.
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 Not quite - it’s the three phase traction inverters. But they sound a lot louder on video.
@ 00:27 see the box of Fluoresecent tubes in the window too, bet them old light fixtures never get used again,
How did you even get there as there is no entrance to small brook?
Hopped on thr steam railway, I was at havenstreet volunteering anyway.
Brothers helpin together
There's no road access to Smallbrook Junction, so how did you get there?
I'm a volunteer and photographer for IOWSR so I hopped on the train which was running today and stayed at smallbrook junction 🙂🙂
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 Of course! I should have thought of that. Too obvious really - that's what steam trains are for! 😊
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 Ah, but how did you get out of Smallbrook Junction? ;)
@@DavidShepheard walked back along the steam railway line, was with someone who had valid PTS and no trains coming as last one had departed 10 mins before
Never know, the 484s and 483007 may meet again some day at smallbrook
We have long term plans to get 483007 running :)
Wasn't there an 03 on the island before? What happened to that? \m/
There was 03079 and 03179 on the island line , but when the class 483s where introduced in 1989/1990 they became surplus to requirements. So both left the island. 03179 found use at Hornsey Depot in North London and eventually preservation at the Rushden railway museum where its being overhauled and returned back to island condition. 03079 I belive once it left the Isle of Wight went straight into preservation up north.
Isle of Wight steam railway have 03059 (D2059) which arrived here in 1988
Damn for electric, those 484s aren't exactly quiet are they?
Quieter than the heavy breathing
Electric aren’t that quiet anyway
They are not as loud in person.
When is the line going to reopen for normal service?
Isn’t the island line the Isle of Wight?
Yes it is
The 484 Is so loud compared to 483
Quieter in person. The video makes it seem loud for some reason.
Shame about the graffiti :( but great shot :)
This is beyond epic! How did this move come about?
Cheaper to get a 484 to push it. As 483 006 is unfit to move under its own power now
@@JackJackProductions would have thought they’d have a shunter over there ti act as thunderbird
@@AnthonyFurnival When the 485s (1920 "Standard" Underground stock) went there was a class 03 on the Island, don't know if it is still on the Island
03079 lives up north in preservation and 03179 also lives in preservation and is currently under overhaul at the Rushden railway museum
@@JackJackProductions you’d assume they’d have one as it’s pretty standard kit for a lot of things. Though maybe the steam railway has one and loans it out as needed
What is this? The Island of Sodor?
Isle of Wight
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 woooooooosh
Why ? Can't think of any reason for it to happen.
Cheaper and easier to use a class 484 unit to shunt it, then get thr unimog over here. Plus 483006 isn't fit for running on its own power anymore
I take it it’s on route to Sandown to be loaded onto vehicles to take it to the mainland for the London Transport Traction Group? Is it still going to the Epping and Ongar Railway?
@@UKWMO going to South Wales initially at least. Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr railway. I assume EOR would be still plan but I believe storage of stock is an issue in part.
Poor 483006
You mean a 483 pulling a 484
Ermmm nope, 484 was definitely pushing 🙂🙂
@@jamesrailwayvideos4365 no because there was Island staff in the 483 which means that is pulling it, because D-Stock trains are very light
It was definitely not pulling it🤣 the 484 was pushing the class 483 as it was no longer cleared to run under its own power.... the reason staff was in the cab at the front was so the driver of the 484 knew when to slow down or speed up! I can confirm this with the island line staff too...
I really do hate what the d stock has become
Why? They would have been scrapped otherwise.
Who asked you?
@@TheMusicalElitist Same can be seid about your comment
Shame about the horrid noise the 484 makes… enough to wake the dead 😖
It’s far quieter in person, and don’t forget that it was going at low speed here.
What’s so rare about that
The new stock moving the old stock in preparation for them to be loaded to go to their new home
