    Another great video! When my parents and I used to visit London when I was a tad younger, the D Stocks were always my favourite LU trains, mainly because the District Line was the line we travelled on the most as we used to start and finish off at Turnham Green. The fact the 484s still retains that distinct traction motor sound brought back memories, especially when travelling through Ryde tunnel.

    Thanks for making this video. It's a shame that the people of the Isle of Wight are being stuck with one train per hour, when these trains are capable of so much more than that.
    I believe that it won't be possible to restore the entire railway line, but it would also be nice to see the track extended beyond Shanklin.

      Thanks ... I'm very pleased that I finally managed to get there.
      The hourly train service was for that week, other weeks it will be half-hourly and the trains will have four cars. If I can I'd like to return in the summer to see the longer trains. I think there are enough stations with passing places for a three train service, which would be every 20 minutes. But there are not enough trains for them all to have four cars.
      Its a shame that the line was not re-opened from Shanklin to Ventnor. Although the Isle of Wight is much smaller than London the distance is still great enough for trains to offer much shorter journey times than road transport.

    I can still feel and hear the old D stock inside the train. Though they could of made the doors open and close faster.

    I missed the old District Line 😢 I might have ridden on either one of those carriages in my lifetime 😅

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  5 місяців тому

      same here - although the trains I miss the most were painted red or white / silver.
      CO / CP / R stocks - with flared doors and either 2 or 4 windows in the middle seating bays
      There were so many internal variations - they had green or grey interiors, there were different seat fabrics, some had partitions (without doors) from the days when the District line also had first class seating, some had internal glass screens, some had half moon shaped decorative glass on the seat backs, some had high back seats, and more

    had the D78ers been equipped with those rubbery palm-sized door-close buttons aloft either side of each car end? we were such brats, we'd hit them activating riders to get off somewhere else instead 👀

  • @ecxpac

    Despite all the alterations, what makes it still SOUND like a D78?

    • @trainrover
      @trainrover 6 місяців тому

      Toronto's introductory fleet sounded exactly like the R and CO/CP stocks plying London's District Line .. after their mid-Eighties refurbishment though, their lone remaining replication was the periodic tick-ticking of the under carriage air compressor being recharged -- everything else about them including the rest of the air compressor chain sounded alien, altogether saddening me quite a bit

      I thought that they got new motors and electrics, but despite this they do retain some of the sounds of the D stock era. I am unsure exactly why.

      I've done some more reading into this, and it does use AC motors but with the same nose mounted gearbox so they still produce that classic humming sound, this also happens with the class 455, also with modern AC motors

      It's a Class 484. They've used a D Stock train to turn it into one.

      It is a former District line D78 Surface Stock train that has been rebuilt and converted into Class 484.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes they use D stock trains but the IOW Class 484 fleet only uses two carriage trains with two driving motor cars back to back.
      Most of the other D - Train fleets use three carriage trains with an unpowered trailer as well.
      Vivarail did not buy any of the non-driving motor (UNDM) D stock cars so these have all been scrapped

      its look isn't as terrible as it was decades ago, e.g., the ceilings to the first ever unit's smoking cars were tarred and stained by 1630 Hours on Day One ;)

    Class 230 is literally the same as class 484 expect its diesel and electric 😂😂

    • @Lynxfan2
      @Lynxfan2 6 місяців тому +4

      No you are wrong, the Class 230 is Diesel Electric (diesel generator providing electrical power) and the Class 484 is entirely electric.
