12:02 This was literally the second song I thought about when I put on the video, in between Garbage "Only Happen When It Rains", Cranberries "Dreams", Stone Temple Pilots "Big Empty" and Live "Lightning Crashes".
I don't know if I'd call them playlist staples, but my top 10 '90s rock tracks I consider underappreciated include the following: "Pepper," the Butthole Surfers; "Universal Heartbeat," Juliana Hatfield; "Dream All Day," The Posies; "I Was Wrong," Social Distortion; "The Trick is to Keep Breathing," Garbage; "Into Your Arms," The Lemonheads' (1993 cover); "Sweet '69," Babes in Toyland; "Bruise Violet," Babes in Toyland; "Down by the Water," P.J. Harvey; "Serve the Servants," Nirvana. S.R., Mo-Mutt Music
I didn't forget either. I was a teenager in the 1990s, so 90s alternative rock is my favorite era and genre of music. I asked Alexa to play Alice in Chains this morning.
I love Garbage and Shirley Manson, I had no idea that people forgot that song. I haven't stopped listening this album and the band since the first time
L7's "Pretend We're Dead" and Republica's "Ready to Go" could absolutely have been on this list. Arguably, they're more undeservedly forgotten than some of the songs included here.
The 90s gave us so many amazing bands and timeless songs. Let's not forget "The Kids Aren't Alright" by The Offspring. Talk about a song we can all relate to. I dare say most of us knew every single person mentioned in that song in our lives.
As someone who was in high school mid-late 90’s this list is so relatable. ‘Sex and Candy,’ ‘Inside Out,’ ‘Balloon’ and ‘Univited’ are definitely memorable.
Class of 97 here. Green Day's Dookie was my freshman year, Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was my junior year, and Foo Fighters Color and the Shape was my senior year. I very closely tie each album to that respective year of high school.

“Sick of Myself” by Matthew Sweet. “Walk on the Ocean” by Toad the Wet Sprocket “This is Hardcore” by Pulp “Why Does It Always Rain On Me” by Travis “Santa Monica” by Everclear “River of Deceit” by Mad Season “Stars” by HUM
I seriously can't understand how Alanis became famous. Her voice is grating. Even when I was younger and my music taste was completely unrefined, I asked how someone who just screams got a record deal. She's so bad I turn her off my radio even if it's on mute.
Garbage was truly Iconic and unforgettable.Veruca Salt really rocked. David Bowie’s I’m afraid of Americans with Trent Reznor was a ‘comeback’ plus it’s facetious. RIP - I still miss him❤️ Sex and Candy awesome 1 hit wonder. Great list
I own a Gibson es335 that used to belong to Trent reznor. I have the provenance to prove it. I live in Memphis and it was made here at the Gibson plant for him. He used it in his live shows. They made 100 for him. He smashed all but 35 of them on stage. He gave the 35 Back to Gibson. They presented them to employees as bonuses with their names on the trussrod plate. I got it from an employee. I paid $3000 for it.
Most forgotten but really good song from Garbage has got to be "When I Grow Up". I heard it a few times on the radio back in the day, but nothing like their other hits. And then never heard it anywhere in media since the mid 2000's. Completely forgotten song.

Spotify even let me know when their new album came out, and I found a couple of songs to add to my Playlist. Back in the day....I used to sing their song Name. It was an inside joke with a friend of mine who I would hang out with and go to a bar to sing karaoke.
Name, Big Machine, Black Balloon, Slide and of course Iris. They have a number of very good tracks. Iris is overplayed but for good reason, there's so much going on in the background in that song.

Incubus live was still one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen, even though I knew barely any of their music. So good I went back again the following year, same venue, higher price 🤦♀️😬🤘
These songs sound great! I like rock🎸! "Pardon Me", "Black Balloon", and "My Own Worst Enemy" came out the same year I was born! Also, the ladies in these music videos looked so nice!
Lot of songs that I've never heard of. Maybe here in France. Popular was a hit here, Alanis too. And Garbage is clearly my favourite, always loved this song and many more from them. Shirley Manson is an awesome singer, incredible in concert.
Bowie and Trent were good friends. They toured together, worked on a bunch of projects together and Trent even credits Bowie for him getting clean and sober. They just showed Trent in the video but didn't mention him. Ridiculous!
Take a Picture - Filter, 6th Avenue Heartache - The Wallflowers, Counting Blue Cars - Dishwalla, Bot or a Girl - Imperial Drag, All the Small Things - Blink 182, Anything by Rage Against the Machine and Smashing Pumpkins but specifically Just Another Bombtrack, Township Rebellion, 1979, Muzzle, Thirty-Three, Rocket... Aw, man, too many more bands and songs to even name!
I loved "drive" by incubus. I end up hating incubus once the 2000's came around because they became to political. They have hatred for anyone that doesn't think like a liberal. Same with green day.
Amen I Kinda Fell Out Of Love With Fall Out Boy when the 2010's kept going on but they'd made a banger cartoon Mondo Trasho 3042 one bright spot in all of that
I was introduced to the Cranberries by my mom’s classmate (my mom went back to the work force & was 10 yrs older than everyone). She would paint my nails and belt out their lyrics….been a fan ever since, remember this song clear as day, I’m 37 now
In 1996, I saw Garbage, Sponge and Stabbing Westward play together. That was a phenomenal show! I wish I could remember who the opening act was. The 90’s were SUCH a great era to grow up in! 🙏🏻❤️🙌🏻
@@trinaq 1993. So I’m five years older. And I see you were born in the year of Radiant Silvergun, Lethal Weapon 4, Small Soldiers, Armageddon, Burning Rangers, and The Mask of Zorro.
Some yes, many no. 80s were fun, celebratory and bright. 1/2 of these are angry which is what I now dont like about 90s music. 2010 decade social media took angrrrrrrrrrr to such a level that makes a lot of what I liked back then unlistenable.
Surprisingly good list! STP's first 2 albums are iconic but they had later albums that went unrecognized and No.4 was brilliant. SPONGE!!! One of my all-time faves. Their discography is all over the place- in the best way. New Pop Sunday should've been a huge success. Such a shame they were overlooked by the media and listeners. Dinosaur Jr. has some of the best guitar work out there but I can understand people not liking the vocals. And look at how many female-fronted bands there were! So much amazing music. I miss the 90's...
Once again, spoken to a casual rock fan point of view, most of these songs to the true rock fans are always awesome. They never stop being awesome. I get that some of these songs because of the tones or rhythm or style they take are an acquired taste, but they never stopped being awesome
the 90s ended 23+ years ago, "casual" or "true" rock fans some folks are just gonna slip ones mind. no need to go out of your way to make yourself seem (key word here) like you are a cooler or better rock fan then the rest. lmfao.
These are good, but yeah, gotta have a Part 2 or Multiple parts...aside from ones mentioned in comments, thinking "Not an Addict' by K's Choice, The Fly's 'Got you Where I Want You', Moist - 'Leave it Alone', Our Lady Peace - 'Naveed', Crystal Method 'Can't You Trip Like I Do', The Verve "The Drugs Don't Work', Sloan - 'Money City Maniacs', Bush - 'Machinehead', Eagle Eye Cherry - 'Save Tonight'. Lots of others.
Sex and Candy by Marcy Playground is my favourite song from them, and anyone that have not heard this song, have probably not heard of the band. Also, I do not know how people can forget Only Happy When It Rains, since they have played it in recent movies like Captain Marvel.
You failed to mention rock and roll hall of fame legend Trent Reznor who was on and sang with David Bowie in “I’m afraid of American’s.” David and Trent brought out the best in one another. It’s too bad we won’t see another video with them together again. R.I.P. David Bowie ❤️💔❤️🎶🎤🎸
So many songs I hoped to see but missed on here… “backwater” Meat Puppets “cut Your Hair” Pavement “Pepper” Butthole Surfers “Raspberry Beret” cover by Hindu Love Gods (REM minus Michael Stipe plus Warren Zevon) “Mr Bad Example” and “Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead” Warren Zevon “Joey” and “Bloodletting” Concrete Blonde “beat of love” Voice of the Beehive “naked Eye” Luscious Jackson “She Watch Channel Zero” cover by Follow for Now “Cannonball” Breeders “Steam” Peter Gabriel “Down By the Water” PJ Harvey “Somebody to Shove” Soul Asylum “Jimmy Olsons Blues” Spin Doctors Guess you will need to do another video!
Was hoping Fastball’s “The Way”, “Out Of My Head” or “Fire Escape” would be on here but there’s so much good music from back than you’d probably have to do a top 50 eventually
no one forgot the way by fastball cuz it's on every other wm list about 90's rock. still gets played on the radio too. not sure why Lit are on here either or Eve 6
Heck yes to all of these. Also, I don't know if this counts but one of my favorite hidden gems is "Here's Where the Story Ends" by the Sundays. Shoegaze I think they call it...
Garbage is one of the most underrated bands of all time. Far too many people "never heard of them" these days, but almost everyone knows at least one of their songs when you start playing their biggest hits or any of their songs which were used in movies. (That "oh, they did that song!?" moment.)
Good list. Several of these I still listen to, but so many hits here I totally forgot about, even from the artists I still listen to. Why don't they show up in the algorithm? 🤔
This is a great list and a few of my favorite songs from the era are on there. Plowed, Inside Out (or I am origami?) , Take a Picture and My Own Worst Enemy!
Peaches by Presidents of teh USA also, Lit's "My Own Worst Enemy" is the intro song for Clay and Buck (took over for Rush Limbaugh) so its played to millions every day
As piracy effectively defunded the entire music industry down to it's bare minimum (live performance) the 90's was the very last time music was a major player in artistic expression. The 90's were the last time a musician can experiment without financial insecurity. That's why ever since pop hybrids of music genres has emerged as the overwhelming available genre of music.
Selfless, cold, and composed - BEN FOLDS 5 !!!!!! Whatever Billy Joel was doing in the 90s was probably pretty awesome. Bruce Hornsby too. He just keeps getting better with age. Every new album he makes is better than the last 😀
Could have also had: Follow You Down (Gin Blossoms, 1996), Rhinoceros (Smashing Pumpkins, 1991), Infected (Bad Religion, 1994), Empower (downset., 1996), Tunic (Song for Karen) (Sonic Youth, 1990), All I Know (Screaming Trees, 1996), Wargasm (L7, 1992)
I hear “My Own Worst Enemy”, “Inside Out”, “What It’s Like”, “Sex And Candy”, and “Jumper” on the radio all the time… Then again, I listen to the alternative rock station 107.7 The End in Seattle, which played all these songs back in the 90s originally
Metalica has a handful of great songs such as Wherever I May Roam , Enter Sand Man, One , Fade To Black, Sad but True etc.... Korn has some good ones like Freak On A Leash . I do not remember the band but Last Kiss is a good song , Nirvana had some good songs , Creed and many more . The 90s was the peak of music as far as I am concerned. I do not remember the bend but what I got is a good song .
Vanishing Cream by The Hunger, Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Pocket by Primitive Radio Gods, Natural One by Folk Implosion - these three belong on the list - nobody forgot Pardon Me, Jumper, or Sex and Candy. I do appreciate that Plowed by Sponge was on this list
Hang on, did you guys just mentioned the incredible NIN inspired Bowie track which has Reznors signature sound all of it and not give any recognition to Mr Reznor?!
I remember in the '90s, I may have been 16 at the time. Anyway, Only Happy When It Rains by Garbage came on MTV and I still had that CD queued up on a CD player. It only took three or four tries of Pauses and play, but I actually got the CD perfectly synced up with the music video. I was able to blare it loud and in high def through the stereo speakers rather than the cheap TV ones. It was an awesome day. I support this is something that those after the '90s kids won't fully understand.
A sampling of my favorite songs from the 1990s: "If I Have To Be Alone"--Todd Rundgren "Men Will Be Men"--Suzanne Vega "Them Bones"--Alice In Chains "When I Was Your Age"--Weird Al Yankovic "Until I Fall Away"--The Gin Blossoms "Runaway Train"--Soul Asylum "The King Is Half-Undressed"--Jellyfish "Walls"--Tom Petty "I Don't Know You"-- Annie Ross & The Low Note Quintet "I Should Be Allowed To Think"-- They Might Be Giants "Vampires"--The Pet Shop Boys "Have A Nice Day"--Ramones "Fade Into You"--Mazzy Star "Skydiver"--Schtum "Sleep"--Garbage "On The Shoulders Of Freaks"-- Henry Phillips "Driven"--Rush "On My Own"--Peach "Mmm-Bop"--Hanson "Goddess On A Hi-Way"--Mercury Rev "The Blarney Stone"--Ween "Bachelorette"--Björk "Bad Reputation"--Freedy Johnston "Feeling Yourself Disintegrate"-- The Flaming Lips "Iris"--The Goo Goo Dolls
It's funny, in the 90s, I wouldn't be caught dead listening to Hanson, Backstreet Boys or Len (Steal My Sunshine was overplayed the day it dropped) but now? I turn the radio up and remember my wonderfully wasted youth.
Closer by NiN, Dumb by Nirvana, Creep by Radio Head, Black by Pearl Jam, Sleep Now in the Fire by Rage, Today by The Smashing Pumpkins, Plush by STP, Santa Monica by Everclear, The Distance by Cake, The Way by Fastball, Break Your Heart by The Wallflowers, Sour Times by Portishead, Time Bomb by Rancid, The Fly by U2, A Girl Like You by Edwyn Collins, Ladykillers by Lush, Cannonball by The Breeders, X Popular by Nada Surf X, Lullaby by Shawn Mullins, and She Don't Use Jelly by The Flaming Lips. I wrote the list of 20 then X'd the ones that were mentioned. The 90's were full of great songs and thus there are many that get forgotten.
These are still what's in my daily driver spotify playlist. The newer stuff just didnt drum the beat for me. 90s rock and the early 2000s was peak music for me.

These songs sound great! I like rock🎸! "Pardon Me", "Black Balloon", and "My Own Worst Enemy" came out the same year I was born! Also, the ladies in these music videos looked so nice!
Dolores really was one of the powerhouse voices of the 90s. Sad to know she's gone
Lot of songs that I've never heard of. Maybe here in France. Popular was a hit here, Alanis too. And Garbage is clearly my favourite, always loved this song and many more from them. Shirley Manson is an awesome singer, incredible in concert.
Check out Rotting Piñata from Sponge. It’s an absolute banger and their follow up is amazing.
The great David Bowie was also working with great Trent Reznor on that song. It was an amazing collaboration. Two creative geniuses working together.
Yeah I know I was waiting for them to mention Trent in that section and they didn't
Your Inclusion Of Incubus Gives You Major Kudos Points loved that band
I loved "drive" by incubus. I end up hating incubus once the 2000's came around because they became to political. They have hatred for anyone that doesn't think like a liberal. Same with green day.
Amen I Kinda Fell Out Of Love With Fall Out Boy when the 2010's kept going on but they'd made a banger cartoon Mondo Trasho 3042 one bright spot in all of that
Right there with you my friend ❤
I was introduced to the Cranberries by my mom’s classmate (my mom went back to the work force & was 10 yrs older than everyone). She would paint my nails and belt out their lyrics….been a fan ever since, remember this song clear as day, I’m 37 now
@16:50 Shirley Manson one of the most gorgeous woman in my book, the doll face the green eyes red hair w t f😂
Don't forget her Scottish accent. The total package!
In 1996, I saw Garbage, Sponge and Stabbing Westward play together. That was a phenomenal show! I wish I could remember who the opening act was.
The 90’s were SUCH a great era to grow up in! 🙏🏻❤️🙌🏻
I loved Stabbing Westward!
Stabbing westward was fucking awesome
Sponge! Not always on my mind but never forgotten
In '93 I saw Screaming Trees, Soul Asylum & Spin Doctors. Great f*cking show!!
Despite only being born at the tail end of the 90's, I still grew up with many of these songs. They're oldies, but they're definitely goodies. ♥️
What year were you born?
I'm an 1998 baby. How about yourself?
@@trinaq that makes me really old. I was born in 1966. Lol
@@trinaq 1993. So I’m five years older. And I see you were born in the year of Radiant Silvergun, Lethal Weapon 4, Small Soldiers, Armageddon, Burning Rangers, and The Mask of Zorro.
@@jimgeorge3273 Coolness, I'm certainly starting to feel that way myself at times! 😂
I was obsessed with Sponge album Rotting Pinata when it came out. ❤❤❤
Aah, the fun times of the 90s music
Okay
Some yes, many no. 80s were fun, celebratory and bright. 1/2 of these are angry which is what I now dont like about 90s music. 2010 decade social media took angrrrrrrrrrr to such a level that makes a lot of what I liked back then unlistenable.
“And I’m more rock n roll than you ever been! Don’t believe me?! Ask Led Zeppelin!” JRR Tolkien
A great era of music. Love these songs.
Brilliant list!! This brought back a ton of good memories 😊😊😊
I'm really surprised that the song called "If You Could Only See" by Tonic didn't make it on this list of 1990s songs.
I only recall hearing about 4 of these songs! Of course, I was in my 20s and listening to rap since 1986. Love Alanis Morrisette!
Once again, spoken to a casual rock fan point of view, most of these songs to the true rock fans are always awesome. They never stop being awesome. I get that some of these songs because of the tones or rhythm or style they take are an acquired taste, but they never stopped being awesome
the 90s ended 23+ years ago, "casual" or "true" rock fans some folks are just gonna slip ones mind. no need to go out of your way to make yourself seem (key word here) like you are a cooler or better rock fan then the rest. lmfao.
@@cheezits3632 sorry I just have a great memory when it comes to music
These are good, but yeah, gotta have a Part 2 or Multiple parts...aside from ones mentioned in comments, thinking "Not an Addict' by K's Choice, The Fly's 'Got you Where I Want You', Moist - 'Leave it Alone', Our Lady Peace - 'Naveed', Crystal Method 'Can't You Trip Like I Do', The Verve "The Drugs Don't Work', Sloan - 'Money City Maniacs', Bush - 'Machinehead', Eagle Eye Cherry - 'Save Tonight'. Lots of others.
The Cranberries Dolores O’Riordan, one of my idols, I listen and sing her songs all day every day! ❤
Sex and Candy by Marcy Playground is my favourite song from them, and anyone that have not heard this song, have probably not heard of the band. Also, I do not know how people can forget Only Happy When It Rains, since they have played it in recent movies like Captain Marvel.
I bought a CD of Incubus's album Make Yourself and was blown away by how good it is.
I worked at an alternative radio station during the 90's so I remember all of these songs.
Even though it’s overplayed up the wazoo “Kryptonite” by Three Doors Down is probably my favorite 90’s rock song.
That I argree. It's insane how many times I hear it on the radio In my truck.
Was that 90s or very early 2000?
@@teal_panda_8434 I think the tail end of the 90’s
2000’s*
It was released in January of 2000 so it just missed the list
Take me back to the 90s and leave there for good.
Still in love with Incubus! Make Yourself ad Morning View are legendary albums
The whole of that Third Eye Blind album was filled with gems and each touched your heart
My favorite song on that album is " God of Wine".
Goat level album
You failed to mention rock and roll hall of fame legend Trent Reznor who was on and sang with David Bowie in “I’m afraid of American’s.” David and Trent brought out the best in one another. It’s too bad we won’t see another video with them together again. R.I.P. David Bowie ❤️💔❤️🎶🎤🎸
You need to find them doing a duet of NIN's Hurt. May not be as great as Johnny Cash's version, but it is amazing none the less.
So many songs I hoped to see but missed on here…
“backwater” Meat Puppets
“cut Your Hair” Pavement
“Pepper” Butthole Surfers
“Raspberry Beret” cover by Hindu Love Gods (REM minus Michael Stipe plus Warren Zevon)
“Mr Bad Example” and “Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead” Warren Zevon
“Joey” and “Bloodletting” Concrete Blonde
“beat of love” Voice of the Beehive
“naked Eye” Luscious Jackson
“She Watch Channel Zero” cover by Follow for Now
“Cannonball” Breeders
“Steam” Peter Gabriel
“Down By the Water” PJ Harvey
“Somebody to Shove” Soul Asylum
“Jimmy Olsons Blues” Spin Doctors
Guess you will need to do another video!
Was hoping Fastball’s “The Way”, “Out Of My Head” or “Fire Escape” would be on here but there’s so much good music from back than you’d probably have to do a top 50 eventually
Yes fire escape was good and the video lol
no one forgot the way by fastball cuz it's on every other wm list about 90's rock. still gets played on the radio too. not sure why Lit are on here either or Eve 6
@@dannyaraya8017Agreed. “My own worst enemy” is still huge. I karaoke “Inside Out” and people always know it.
Heck yes to all of these.
Also, I don't know if this counts but one of my favorite hidden gems is "Here's Where the Story Ends" by the Sundays. Shoegaze I think they call it...
RIP Dolores O'Riordan ❤️
Thank you for including Cranberries 'Free to Decide'! I've always loved it & wished it got more appreciation...
The 80s were unforgettable
The 90s was a wild roller coaster you come back to whenver you need a smile or a good memory
Garbage is one of the most underrated bands of all time. Far too many people "never heard of them" these days, but almost everyone knows at least one of their songs when you start playing their biggest hits or any of their songs which were used in movies. (That "oh, they did that song!?" moment.)
If time travel will ever be invented, i'll beam back to the 90's and relive them as an adult, because those were the best times to be alive.
Good list. Several of these I still listen to, but so many hits here I totally forgot about, even from the artists I still listen to. Why don't they show up in the algorithm? 🤔
Ah, we had such good experimental music back then! 😍
Great list! I was fortunate enough to have been able to see most of these bands live back in the ‘90s. What a decade!
Possum kingdom-toadies
The waters edge-seven Mary three
Silvergun Superman-stp
Anything by
ALICE IN CHAINS!!
Silver gin Superman is one my favorites by step!!!! Excellent album
How could I have forgotten these songs when I've never heard him in the first, other than a couple of them
Lightning crashes by live. Such an amazing and beautiful song
This is a great list and a few of my favorite songs from the era are on there. Plowed, Inside Out (or I am origami?) , Take a Picture and My Own Worst Enemy!
Filter had another hit with "Hey Man Nice Shot"
Peaches by Presidents of teh USA
also, Lit's "My Own Worst Enemy" is the intro song for Clay and Buck (took over for Rush Limbaugh) so its played to millions every day
As piracy effectively defunded the entire music industry down to it's bare minimum (live performance) the 90's was the very last time music was a major player in artistic expression.
Every new album he makes is better than the last 😀
No Presidents Of The United States?! Peaches, Kitty or Lump?!
How are they forgotten
Haven't forgotten how awesome any of these songs are. A good chunk, I still listen to on a semi-regular basis.
No Silverchair? _Freak_ was awesome!
Wish they would get back together… I liked the later albums with tracks like greatest view and young modern as well as the first three albums
Most of the songs here never left my playlist 😊
I hear “My Own Worst Enemy”, “Inside Out”, “What It’s Like”, “Sex And Candy”, and “Jumper” on the radio all the time…
Then again, I listen to the alternative rock station 107.7 The End in Seattle, which played all these songs back in the 90s originally
Shirley Manson is an awesome
Metalica has a handful of great songs such as Wherever I May Roam , Enter Sand Man, One , Fade To Black, Sad but True etc.... Korn has some good ones like Freak On A Leash . I do not remember the band but Last Kiss is a good song , Nirvana had some good songs , Creed and many more . The 90s was the peak of music as far as I am concerned. I do not remember the bend but what I got is a good song .
I would’ve liked to have seen 311 make an appearance here.
Here for Garbage!! Huge fan!!
Hang on, did you guys just mentioned the incredible NIN inspired Bowie track which has Reznors signature sound all of it and not give any recognition to Mr Reznor?!
*I freaking love the song **_'Downfall'_** by Alabama-based band Trust Company. If Downfall doesn't get your blood pumping, you're probably dead.*
3 solid albums by TRUSTcompany
I hope there's some PJ Harvey on here
I remember in the '90s, I may have been 16 at the time.
The nostalgia is real ❤

It's funny, in the 90s, I wouldn't be caught dead listening to Hanson, Backstreet Boys or Len (Steal My Sunshine was overplayed the day it dropped) but now? I turn the radio up and remember my wonderfully wasted youth.
In the Meantime by Spacehog
Mother Mother by Tracy Bonham should be on the list.
Great song
These are still what's in my daily driver spotify playlist. The newer stuff just didnt drum the beat for me. 90s rock and the early 2000s was peak music for me.
IT'S A MIDLIFE CRISIS! ♪♫
