While I don't think that Palworld's success can be entirely attributed to it being a "meme game," I do think that its meme status basically acted as a ton of free advertising. Just the mere concept of Pokemon with guns meant that every influencer was talking about it every time a trailer dropped for the game. So tons of people kept hearing about the game over the last few years.
However yeah if it was *just* a meme game, then it might get a bit of press at launch, you'd get streamers playing it to laugh at it, and then people would move on. What really got the game going imo is the fact that when everyone tuned into those streams to laugh at the game, they were surprised to find that the game actually looked kinda fun. And then the narrative shifted from "oh lol look at this shitty meme game" to "hey uh... have you tried this thing? it's actually pretty fun"
But yeah ultimately Palworld doesn't feel like any kind of real competition. People buying Palworld are likely either people who weren't going to buy pokemon anyways for one reason or another. Or are people that would buy pokemon no matter what in addition to getting Palworld. I don't think anyone is really thinking "oh yes I was definitely going to buy the next Pokemon game, but now that this has come out I'm going to buy Palworld instead!" Like that's just not how people think and Palworld is really not setting out to "replace" pokemon in any way.
I wish that GF would spend more time and resources making the pokemon games actually up to what I would expect from the largest media franchise in the world. But me not buying pokemon or Palworld selling 10 million copies isn't going to change that.

I think this is one of the most even-handed assessments I've read yet. Personally, I think a lot of people are just "growing out of" Pokémon, not because it's a kids' game and they're adults now, but because their interests and expectations have broadened due to exposure to other media and Pokémon just isn't meeting that anymore. It's fine that they don't like the new entries, but it's not fine that they take it to mean that there's necessarily something wrong with the franchise. Yes, glitches and bad framerates and excessive pop-in are objective markers of performance, and they are completely valid metrics to measure an individual title's quality. But to say that the mechanics being mostly the same after Gen 3 (save for a new gimmick every generation starting in Gen 6) is missing the forest for the trees.
I think what Pokémon needs IF the rights holders want to expand outside of just the preteen demographic is to add more difficulty options, improve performance, and maybe add a bit more depth to the stories like they did with Black and White and Legends: Arceus. Maybe also have more rivals like Bede, who felt like the second coming of Gary Oak in just how much of a snarky jackass he was before he got wrangled into becoming the PANK gym leader.

I was with you until you started blaming "kids" for "not having standards", obviously kids do have standards and it's a lot more complicated than you are leading people to believe but I personally am constantly surprised by how mature and well formed a child's artistic opinion can be. I am not saying children are all connoisseurs but they seem to have just as much variance in quality and complexity of their beliefs and opinions as adults. I don't know how the age distribution is amongst the sales but I doubt it's all coming from children. Children are just as volatile and unpredictable a market demographic as adults, they can change tastes on a whim and are just as likely to become an addicted consumer as anyone else.
I believe the high sales numbers despite the poor quality is coming from a number of things I will list a few of them here.
    1. Fear of missing out. The Pokemon Company made the Dex-cut because they wanted the games to be a "unique" experience that you can't just postpone until the next better game, they wanted it to be something that you would feel you missed. Not to mention the countless other tactics that rely on addiction rather than quality.
    2. Growing market place and population. There is more people and there is more interest in video games in general so games don't have to try as hard to be successful.
    3. The merge of hand-held and home consoles. A lot of people were looking forward to seeing what a home console Pokemon game would be like and there are people who wouldn't even play a Pokemon game unless it was on a console.
    4. Uncertainty. Game Freak Inc. and The Pokemon Company have managed to keep people in a constant cycle of false hope and curiosity or even flat out denial about how good the games are so people buy them just to confirm for themselves.
    5. The fad got a second wind. The people that played the first games finally grew up so they had money or even kids of their own and as you said they are have a sort of nostalgia relapse.
    6. Pokemon Go. I really don't need to explain this one but the mere fact that it's a phone game let them tap into a market of billions of people who don't own and never planed on owning a console but the barrier to entry for Pokemon Go was so low that they might of checked it out just to see what the fuss is about, not to mention the augmented reality aspect of it tricks people into thinking that it's a "healthy" choice to play the game.
Overall I think the billions of dollars these games are profiting is an abnormality of the market. If Game Freak Inc. and The Pokemon Company don't adjust their tactics soon people will lose interest likely within the next 5 or so years. But as you said it won't matter not because people will still buy the games but because they have only hundreds of employees yet they profited thousands of lifetimes worth of money there is zero chance that they can spend all that money within the next hundred years so long as they maintain their current budget and pace even if their income gets reduced to zero and they are just bleeding millions a year they will barley get through half of it before Pokemon becomes public domain.
Sorry that was longer than I meant for it to be. Good video though.

yay i get to post this again
As a pokemon enjoyer, I don't see Palworld as a "threat" until two more things happen: an animated series happens and merch is made.
The main difference between the two companies is that Pokemon isn't just a video games company; they are a literal multimedia company that got lucky that their branches are working well:the toy line, the anime, the games (no matter how bad people say they are), and staying power.
The one major win Palworld also has is the fact it was made for higher end platforms such as computers and xbox first and not for the switch, once it is able to run on switch on release (or the new console whenever that is) and it runs well, then we will have a topic to talk about.
Reason why I say this is because the last time a franchise stepped on to Pokemon's turf was Yokai-watch that had a surprising run of popularity in Japan but was short lived as after a year the hyped died down as pokemon came back with Go and Sun n Moon. Heck, it wasn't received well at all in America.
If Palworld wants to truly succeed, it either has to have something besides the game (like an animated series) or sell some merch. But I suspect this is a flash in the pan(or fryer for that matter) and the hype for it will die down until the full release happens.

    • @OtakuUnitedStudio
      @OtakuUnitedStudio 7 місяців тому +5

This is mostly correct, but Yokai Watch actually carried its popularity for a while longer in Japan. It only lasted about 5 years though, and current attempts at boosting the series aren't really working the best.

The thing is that Scarlet and Violet as well as Legends Arceus are great games that are sullied by poor performance, some technical issues, and frankly bad graphics. Mechanically these games are fun, some of the most fun many have had with Pokemon for years. It's not like Pokemon hasn't dealt with poorly made games. Gen 1 and Gen 2 of pokemon are notorious for how broken they are, in fact I'd still consider Gen 1 to be worse than Scarlet and Violet in terms of bugs. Multiple systems do not work properly as well as many things just being straight up incorrect.
I do overall agree that Palworld isn't competition for Pokemon becuase of the fact that one is a turn based jRPG and the other is a survival game. Two different games for different audiences. Played both and Palworld doesn't make me think it's Pokemon outside of it's monster collecting aspect

  • @shakachoarroyo

  • @danieldishon688
    @danieldishon688 7 місяців тому +4

After people got over the initial graphics issue, Scarlett and Violet have come to be seen as best games in the franchise so far. Because they have age up the game a little to be appropriate for teenagers, even if a 8 year old can still beat them. It has an actual cast of characters who have personalities. We had a bona-fide battle happy yandere and a bona fide tsundere in the game. And the DLC gave us so much. Like actual full on long running story in the DLC with 2 very large new regions. And the dex cut isn't totally fixed but... it's way less small now. And did I mention Ogerpon? Ogerpon is perfect.
Scarlett and Violet did grow the Pokémon fan base again, it sold way more than any of the past few games, and just about every day I see a new person post on social media Nintendo fan groups say their going to go ahead and give playing it a try. And I think that's cause while no, the franchise isn't perfect, exciting things are happening in it and Pokémon is creating real buzz in the gaming community for the first time in years. Nobody particularly talked about the Crown Tundra or Ilse of Armor DLC to Sword and Shield. But there's a new level of buzz in the community for Teil Mask and Indigo disk that it's got people legit hungry to know what's coming next. Are we getting Black and White remakes? Or Gold and Silver remakes? Will one be a Legends or Let's Go game or something new? Could we get a 3rd DLC for S&V cause people actually want it. Could Pokémon blow our minds and give us gen 10? Why didn't Pokémon put ports of their old games on the E-Shop or the virtual console on the NSO, do they have something big planned like an anniversary collection? I need to know.

9:05 A lot of people find this really confusing, but there’s a pretty simple explanation: Scarlet and Violet are pretty darn broken on a technical level, but the gameplay itself is actually pretty novel and fresh for the series. It’s not as innovative as Legends Arceus, but it’s still very different from what came before, and people appreciated that despite the terrible performance. People always wonder how those games succeeded “despite their poor quality,” and the answer is that the poor quality only extended to the graphical performance. Palworld's game loop is fun- it's a mix of the mechanics from Arc, the catching concept from pokemon and the character animations from Fortnite (It's unreal engine after all) with a huge emphasis on interaction with your pals both for combat and the survival mechanics. The combat mechanics are dynamic and have a huge skill ceiling, and the graphics and performance... well, as long as you play on adequate hardware, it puts pokemon to shame in those aspects, but that's understandable.

Thing is I do believe the gamefreak devs care about the games. People asked for open world pokemon and we got an open world pokemon even though making a linear game like sword and shield would have been much easier and sell nearly as well. I think the problem with gen 9 was the game engine they used, they used the engine from the 3ds. It was clear in sword and shield that this engine could not handle any kind of open environment because it was built for the closed areas of the 3ds games. They couldn't abandon the engine though as it had all the pokemon from the previous game, so they had to downgrade the graphics to the ps2 and rush the rest of the open world, resulting in the game we got. Another thing I wanted to know was how palworld was made in such a short time with a small studio. The real reason is that the studio had made a previous game called craftopia, which was a breath of the wild-like survival game. So palworld was basically that game fixed, but with a bigger map and pokemon.

      @friendlyotaku9525 7 місяців тому +5

"downgrade the graphics to the ps2" do people not remember what PS2 games look like? but you are right that the engine itself is very old, in fact it has been used and modified since the GBA days... though there are murmurings that Game Freak might be switching to Unreal Engine for a future title.

PS2 is way too generous for Legends Arceus or *especially* Scarlet + Violet. Those mountain and grass textures are out of an N64.
AA games on the Gamecube have consistently better graphics (my main example is Ribbit King, there is no reason for a AAA game to look worse than Frolf in 2020 or beyond).
Also the lead devs only care about their sputtering out of touch ideal. They don't and have never invested in writers like Pokemon spinoffs have (namely Mystery Dungeon and Ranger). They don't push for strong ecosystems like series such as Monster Hunter do with World. They don't improve the quality of life nearly as fast as competitors like Dragon Quest or Shin Megami Tensei (seriously, Devil Survivor for the NDS has better quality of life than modern Pokemon). They also don't want to add any challenge to the games because the creative leads think kids are too obsessed with UA-cam to be willing to learn something past "damage move does damage". Maybe the team beneath them cares, but don't pretend Gamefreak leadership does.

Some people are claiming around half of Pokémon players are over the age of 20. I don't know where they're getting their metrics from, but it is an interesting claim nonetheless.
The issue is, most of the sources for this are based on self-reported users answering online polls. A lot of kids under the age of 13 cannot legally participate in them as a result due to COPPA. So the numbers may be skewed.
That said, I do think Pokémon as a franchise has an exceptionally large adult demographic. If there can be hopes that some studio will take the big whigs down a peg for the Cartoon Mouse company then it makes sense why some would wish it on the Electric Mouse Company. We grew up in a time without online patches. Every game that released had to be essentially rock solid on release. It was rare to see a buggy mess from a major publisher. And when it did happen, the backlash was massive, take a game like Sonic 06, it wouldn't be too out of place if it released today compared to 2006.
But today's kids? A ton of major publishers release buggy games and then fix them eventually through patch work. To a kid growing up now they'll just think that's how all games are, buggy games are the norm so they won't even question the quality of the game, they just live with it.
To be clear I'm not blaming children, I am blaming the world they currently live in where releasing sub par experiences is now standard.

I'm not sure the adults paying isn't quite so low, I mean who is actually buying those $400 life size plushies?
Honestly while I would consider myself a fan, I guess I want different things. People want actually hard games which is fine, but I want something more chill like you saw in the show. Something with more of a focus on raising pokemon, something like an Animal Crossing or Slime Rancher but pokemon. But also I want something that looks good for fucks sake. for the biggest franchise in the world we should get something that looks like Detective Pikachu (the movie, not the game).
But even if some better game comes along it still has some issues. Pokemon has some universal appeal. You can ask plenty of people who there favorite pokemon is and get an answer. More likely than say, who's your favorite Smash character or maybe even something like favorite Marvel character. It has a bit more of a cultural impact that a new franchise won't until it's more established. That and something many would have said is an issue with Pokemon now, there's just simply not enough of them. There's 1000+ Pokemon, it's pretty likely you can find one or a few you really like. Less so if there are only 100 or so.
I will say this, there was a fan made game demo a while ago that I though was the future, I think it was called Generations. Basically the idea was you play as the trainer running around normally, but in a battle you switch to your pokemon and battle in real time. It was pretty sweet.

Not terribly relevant since the major points of the video still stand, but as of September 19th 2024, Nintendo is suing Pocketpair, the makers of Palworld, for patent infringement

Audience sales tend to reflect the previous product. I think the next Pokemon game will at minimum sell worse than Scarlet and Violet because it had so many bugs and graphical compromises that general audiences will look over at other products before going back to pokemon for at least that generation, but Pokemon isn't going anywhere.

I was a kid during the peak or 90s Poke-mania so I've been a lifelong fan. That being said, the last pokemon game I bought was Sword and Shield. I absolutely hated it. I swore off giving them another cent until the games improve substantially. I won't blame anyone for continuing to support the franchise despite its depressing mediocrity but I hope eventually enough people will come to the same conclusion I have. The reason their games haven't really "evolved" (🥁🥁🔔) much over the last 3 decades is because they make money hand over fist regardless of the effort they put in.

My Pokémon experience went a bit differently. Started playing when I was 9/10 with Gen 1 Red (I know I'm old lol) I continued to buy every game that came out up until Gen 4 Pearl when I was 19. Didn't even look at a Pokémon game after that for years, I saw the hype for Pokémon Go but still had no interest. Yet Sword and Shield I had a lot of interest in when I heard about it, I dunno why maybe because I'm British and it was meant to be based on the UK. Never the less those games brought me back to Pokémon when I was 32 and made me go back and play all the others and keep up with the new ones.
Legends: Arceus is the best Pokémon has been since it's creation as far as I'm concerned, I hope they make more of those games. Scarlet and Violet were somehow even buggier than Sword and Shield on release which boggles my mind.
As for Palworld, even though I'm 36 now I'm not really interested in the game, if it wasn't for some of the Pal's designs being VERY similar to some Pokémon I wouldn't even call it "Pokémon with guns", nor "Ark with Pokémon" if anything I'd say it's Ark with Digimon lol.
However my problem with the Pokémon games isn't that I want them to be more adult, I just want them to put a bit more of that Pokémon Company money in to MAKING the games.

I'm gonna say it right now, as a diehard pokemon fan... *I LOVE PALWORLD.* While pokemon has had a huge influence on my life as a whole (i have over 50 pokemon plushies and about 1000 hours combined on all the games I've played), i much prefer palworld over something like pokemon sv because while they are both fun, one just kinda ends (pokemon) while the other has endless amounts of content due it being a survival game. Hoping this is the wake up call TPC needs, and that this will make them try harder foe gen 10.

Love both Pokemon and Palworld. With that said there are way more things Pokemon games could take away from Palworld to make them better. Even if just simple quality of life improvements, snappier game loop that doesn't waste your time, lore that isn't just super safe...amongst other things. I had way more fun playing Palworld than Scarlet and I'm not even a particular fan of survival genre.
At this point I hope that devs at Pocket Pair will invest heavily into the game and fulfill its potential to the fullest. Whether the pokemon company would react or will just stick to the old ways I don't even care anymore.

nah I disagree. I have a little cousin who told me sword and shield sucked, and how other future Pokémon games did as well.
You can say kids don’t have brainpower, but their opinion is influenced off the UA-camrs/creators they who made their opinion of the same thing. Especially now, I feel like kids are more engrossed to their tablets, youtube, and other medias like tik toks.
Maybe you are right about kids eating the recent games up no matter how trash it is. (Because it’s literally the only Pokémon games available unless you emulate it)
But I think Pokémon online media is a heavy influence on kids. Especially if all you see about a game is heavy criticism

I think you are wrong mostly. Palworld is competition because both are monester games;hiwever you are right that the target audience is vastly different. As a kid, I stopped playing Pokemony after Ruby because they kept releasing the sane game with assets flips. Later I played X and Y and moon because it was different enough from the versions I played to warrent it and I got to play with my Nefu. Lastley, the goal in the pokemon games is different enough to still make pokemon worth the purchase if you never played it. Now a days, GameFreak should be ashamed of themselves for releasing such a buggy game, pokemon not and Indie game so I am not giving it ant slack for those bugs. At the very least, they need to fix these graphical bugs, but the truth is most mainstream studios will release a game in a buggy state if the game wont crash.

Pokemon will never have real competition, I ve been a fan since I was a kid and many of the people who grew up in the Pokemania era are now playing the newer games too, it will never die as a franchise. However to many Pokemon fans, Palworld existing has shown them (myself included) how much more Pokemon could have been. To me Pokemon suddenly seems out of touch for sticking to the same formula for so many years. Suddenly the glitchy mess that was fun to play suddenly feels way worse now that an early access game who has some bugs but developers are actively trying to fix but started out to feel like a complete game. Palworld offers so much more (yes its a survival game, but the monster taming is still an important part of it) that should light a fire under Gamefreak's ass
