I always learn new words watching you. Today's word is "ootheca". Also, since moving to South Carolina, I've been surprised to see how roaches *don't* infest. First time I saw an American cockroach the size of my thumb, I about lost my shit, but they really don't fare well inside the house, and neither do the little flying ones we get around here.
In the more northern parts of Europe, we're blessed by basically having no roaches and no ants inside. I had two forest-type roaches (Ectobius vittiventris) inside before, that's everything I've encountered. Those really don't like it inside though and just come inside by accident. I've literally never seen a "kitchen type" cockroach that could infest anything. Most feeders also require high temperatures to start breeding, so infesting isn't really possible. By the way, the "ootheca" isn't supposed to be pronounced that way, if you're scientific about it. It's just common for English natives to use the word like that. The Greek origin pronounces both o's seperately. It's from ωοθήκη (ovary), which uses an Omega and an Omikron to spell both the "o". Really nitpicking though, just thought I'd mention it.

I worked in a UK prison for 34 years and in my workshop we had an occasional infestation of Blatta Orientalis roaches from the drains, which was easily controlled.
I've tried a few different ways of keeping these, all of which have been successful from a breeding perspective. The way in which I ended up ultimately keeping them is barebottom as I can keep them clean and harvest the ootheca from the frass easily. These ootheca are then set up in their own smaller enclosure, or hatchery if you will, with substrate and cardboard. This hatchery is then placed in the main colony, and mounted towards the top of the tote so that it stays warm and humid to encourage them to hatch 40 days later. As a fellow breeder, I must say it's an absolute game changer to have bulk pinhead lats already separated out from the main colony when you've got slings to feed. Cheers from the US.
I’m a firm believer in raising your own foodstuffs whenever you can, you can be more sure of what they’ve been fed and improve the nutrition value to the spiders. Great video that takes away some of the uncertainty for us newbies to the hobby.
At the end of the video the webbing in the encloser to ur left 2nd in from the right middle row looks awesome. nice to learn how to keep the food and how to breed them.

If you put tape over the frosted corners it prevents them climbing any higher because they're just unable to grip on tape. I do that when cleaning crickets out. :)

Can you tell me why I can’t get the eggs to hatch? I have my colony at 20-30% humidity and around 90 Fahrenheit. am I keeping them too dry or too warm or do I need to seperate the eggs and incubate?
We have referenced your earlier videos on raising feeder insects over and over. Glad to know the same method is working for you. Would love for you to consider raising a cycle of crickets just to show the full process. We have tried multiple times with varied success, especially with trying to raise the pinheads separately. They either dry up and die off, or drown in the drops of water misted in the bin to keep humidity up.

Not sure I could do that. 😂😂 I do have some questions. First, how are the pretty emerald roaches doing? I would love to see them again. 2 - I’m not sure you explained why you use bran instead of just potting compost or coconut fibre. It seems to me that both could be effective at keeping them dry. 3 - Late last year you had that poor girl with the maggot infestation and I think you said something about them coming from the crickets. I could easily be mistaken in this but it did peak my curiosity. Am I correct with my memory?🤔. Anyway, it is always interesting to see your husbandry. You are so good at what you do. every time I see feeder roaches I'm filled with envy! they look like such a nice sized meal for a spider but I can only use crickets and mealworms where I am, the roaches are all considered invasive or illegal and even feeders are not allowed

I had to look up the roach..we don't use what we call popnames for spiders and most roaches but that is definitely one of the roaches I would love in my collection
The egg cases are a lot bigger than the bran bits, if you found the right mesh I bet you could sieve them out! I need to keep my roaches warmer. I am/have been switching away from offering water and just giving them vegetable scraps instead. Also good to know they won't infest my flat; I'd been practically treating them like radioactive waste. Probably still won't hand them out as cat toys like the crickets though.
I couldn’t find bran, so Im using horticultural vermiculite as a substrate. Seems to work ok. I noticed when I switched from crickets to Dubia my spiders seemed to grow faster and carried more weight. Now I have a colony of Dubia and a small colony of red runners as well. The Dubia are quite prolific and there’s a ton of small ones in there. Waiting for them all to grow up a little more. Thank you for the video 👍
great update and recap on breeding roaches PROFF. some very useful information for the hobby, i keep mine on porage oats and cat biscuits for food with some Lettice leaves. great footage CAMERA LADY. many thanks guys and take care

Here in the US, Redrunners are difficult to find. I am planning on starting a Dubia colony soon. I've purchased them from my local pet shop. Even the large ones are far from adult and my Tarantulas don't seem very interested. I'm hoping if I can raise full adults that my T's will show interest.
Interesting enough when I first moved into my apartment, (live on the east coast of the US) I would find roaches every now and again, and they looked almost identical to Red runners, turns out they’re known as “oriental roaches” witch are fairly common in this area, I would hate to have to explain to the maintenance people here that my Ts food won’t infest the whole neighborhood 😂
No more orange slice in these colonies. The flies are always finding them in my colony. I think you’re right in saying they get their moisture from the spring mix or your greens. To only put what gets eaten in an hour so nothings there to attract the mites flies etc.

Thank you for your video, I sincerely enjoy all of your content. I used to keep Tarantulas in the late 90's and kept dubias for food which was a great convenience. The first colony I inherited was passed along with the advice to place a four inch or so coating of petroleum jelly at the top of the tub below the lid to mitigate the chance of escape. Do you think that was really a reasonable precaution? Appreciate your videos nostalgic and vicarious, truly enjoy your content:)
Great to see an updated vid on this. I enjoyed your original vids on keeping redrunners back when I had 20 tarantulas and decided I wanted to keep a colony to save money as well as knowing exactly what they were eating and therefore increasing their health and nutritional content. Now I'm on over 100 fluffy ones I have a couple of large colonies and haven't bought live food since. Before converting one of my bedrooms into a heated spider room I struggled to keep the colony going and would have to top it up. But now the room is around 26 Celsius and with added heat mats, I find that they are self sustaining. Feed from one colony and let the others breed undisturbed then switch when numbers drop. I will certainly look into the new mesh you are using as I am currently using the plastic screening you used previously, although I find doubling it up does offer more protection from flies than a single layer. One question regarding the sacks of bran, what are the little beetles you get in the bran, and are they safe for slings to eat?
@@elainebines6803 Close, they're "weevils" officially. Comes with everything grain and there are many versions. Extremely funny looking bugs in a close up. Like Dave said, no harm. Just a little pest-y. Wouldn't keep the bran next to your rice etc. They won't hurt the roaches or you, you probably just don't want to eat them.
I was wandering how well you hatched the egg cases with your dry method . I started off that way a year and a half ago but didn't get much of a hatching thriving colony so I started giving them water drinkers as well as spraying them down and a jelly pot. They started to boom and I have set up nine other people with red runner colonies since then just to keep my numbers down . I also use a 7w heat mat on full blast . Admittedly mine do grow a bit too fast for my use since I actually prefer dubai for most things . But red runners are great for arboreal and mantis . Nice video .
Has any research been done into spider nutrition ? As farmers we increase certain minerals etc for livestock pre breeding and during pregnancy. Just curious as to whether similar methods could help with your occasional egg problems and maybe a supplement could help at such times .
Great info. I'm trying to do the same. My room is around 70 degrees so I have a heat mat under the egg crates section but maybe it is still not warm enough as they don't seem to be breeding all that quickly. Just the odd egg sac every now and then.
I think the bran is a waste of time. It traps moisture instead of letting it evaporate through the vents. Had my dubia years and it never gets wet nor do the egg crates. Never needed to clean them out

Very informative video thank you. I've set up a small cricket colony without the bran on the floor,also I've used the bug food from the shops with some greens. Do you think this is sufficient. I manage to keep them for a good while like this. But I must agree they can have an odour but nowhere near as bad as when you first buy them.

Could you tell me if keeping B lateralis at 80-85 All the time will speed up there life cycle as obviously it speeds up everything else. in the wild they wouldn't be under that temperature consistently as fluctuations would occur that's gotta be healthier for prolonged life and generally stronger roaches.

How long do your adults live after final molts cause mine have been breeding like mad for about 2-3 months solid I'm now starting to get the first lot of ootheca hatching but I'm also loosing fair few of the adults to which hadn't been happening. I was wondering if it's to do with over crowding or age.
Hi Dave, I know brand doesnt matter and what not but where do you find your big egg crates? Ive had a colony in the past and looking to set up another two dubia and turkestan ones soon but always found finding the huge egg crates difficult and ended up with random bits of various size egg boxes I had. Ordering them online they wanted ridiculous prices!

Question on food- you mentioned in your previous video that you used chick growing mash. Most females are mature when they reach 2/3 to 3/4 of their final size, but since that can be hard to gauge, your best bet is to wait for your female to moult and look at the spermathecae. If they are hardened and a solid dark colour, that means she is mature. Best of luck!
My roaches don't bother my Mrs but my fruit fly's I get alot of ear ache over. Don't breed dart frogs people you will get ear ache. Plus my male leucomelas sings his hart out alot. I get ear ache.
There are plenty. I love my Brazilian Salmon Pink Bird Eater. It's a giant Tarantula but what a great pet. It'll burrow if given enough dirt & it'll plug the burrow when in molt. Then when molted it'll open the burrow & hang out at the opening when hungry. IT DOESN'T GET ANY EASIER THAN THAT! You'll know 100% when it's hungry & when it's NOT. I consider it a crime to raise a tarantula that burrows but to NOT give it enough dirt to burrow completely. In other words 99% is these Tarantula channels are DOING IT WRONG.
Best is always relative. How old are you? How much do you want to see the spider? Do you mind having a spider with an attitude problem or are you okay with not too much interaction? Are you interested in fancy colors/behavior/size or something completely different? Are you a fan of lots of webbing? That'll give us in the comments a better picture to recommend a spider.
hi im total noob (except from the time as a kid i caught some jumping spiders on my wall and fed them in a jar. for a while) im recently getting more interested in these fantastic creatures and am toying with the idea of owning one. or two.. terrestrial as i wanna see it as it'll be a solitary spider collection. one thats easy going so a new world for temperament i think.. one that doesnt web too much and colours or hairs not too much of an issue@@rebel4466
hi i have and have learnt the rough differences between arboreal terrrstrial subterrainean and that babboon spiders are a no go as a noob! just wanted an actual pointer to a spider that would be a good choice. ive had lizards before so caring for a tanked animals isnt new to me either. @@daveslittlebeasties
@daveslittlebeasties I've noticed that some have mites on them. I've heard this is normal for them to have these mites on them, and they don't transfer over to the tarantulas is this true ?
I was that way at one point too so I can understand. Look into dubia roach. They don't smell. Once set up they're almost hands free. It DOESN'T get any easier to do. Actually my gf was who wanted to start raising them. I thought it was so off limits to even ask her that I never did lol. She asked me after looking into them.

Runners are some of the easiest to breed. In my experience I find they like high heat. Love your channel ❤

I use the bran as it’s cheap and clean, the emaralds are a good size colonie now and yes the flies originated from the crickets and can be troublesome
Bran is very multi-purpose in Roach colonies. It's cheap, it's food, it's moisture control. Nothing else checks all the boxes.

Check out banded crickets. They are smaller than black field crickets but don’t smell, are quieter, and are more hardy in our experience.

Thank you for your video, I sincerely enjoy all of your content. I used to keep Tarantulas in the late 90's and kept dubias for food which was a great convenience. The first colony I inherited was passed along with the advice to place a four inch or so coating of petroleum jelly at the top of the tub below the lid to mitigate the chance of escape. Do you think that was really a reasonable precaution? Appreciate your videos nostalgic and vicarious, truly enjoy your content:)
That was the old way I remember it well but a clear plastic tub is better 😂

Great to see an updated vid on this. I enjoyed your original vids on keeping redrunners back when I had 20 tarantulas and decided I wanted to keep a colony to save money as well as knowing exactly what they were eating and therefore increasing their health and nutritional content. Now I'm on over 100 fluffy ones I have a couple of large colonies and haven't bought live food since. Before converting one of my bedrooms into a heated spider room I struggled to keep the colony going and would have to top it up. But now the room is around 26 Celsius and with added heat mats, I find that they are self sustaining. Feed from one colony and let the others breed undisturbed then switch when numbers drop. I will certainly look into the new mesh you are using as I am currently using the plastic screening you used previously, although I find doubling it up does offer more protection from flies than a single layer. One question regarding the sacks of bran, what are the little beetles you get in the bran, and are they safe for slings to eat?
The little beetles are no harm you can feed them to your spiders 👍
I think they're called weebles. Correct me if I'm wrong. Mum and dad used to have a health food shop and that's what we called them, anyways 😊
@@elainebines6803 Close, they're "weevils" officially. Comes with everything grain and there are many versions. Extremely funny looking bugs in a close up. Like Dave said, no harm. Just a little pest-y. Wouldn't keep the bran next to your rice etc. They won't hurt the roaches or you, you probably just don't want to eat them.
could you cover discoid roaches one day? they are the only roach legal in canada.

They're very much like Dubia, just a little larger and a little slower in reproduction. You can stick to a Dubia guide.
I was wandering how well you hatched the egg cases with your dry method . I started off that way a year and a half ago but didn't get much of a hatching thriving colony so I started giving them water drinkers as well as spraying them down and a jelly pot. They started to boom and I have set up nine other people with red runner colonies since then just to keep my numbers down . I also use a 7w heat mat on full blast . Admittedly mine do grow a bit too fast for my use since I actually prefer dubai for most things . But red runners are great for arboreal and mantis . Nice video .

Has any research been done into spider nutrition ? As farmers we increase certain minerals etc for livestock pre breeding and during pregnancy. Just curious as to whether similar methods could help with your occasional egg problems and maybe a supplement could help at such times .

I'm trying to do the same. My room is around 70 degrees so I have a heat mat under the egg crates section but maybe it is still not warm enough as they don't seem to be breeding all that quickly. Just the odd egg sac every now and then.
I find the more you start with the easier they will get established
I think the bran is a waste of time. It traps moisture instead of letting it evaporate through the vents. Had my dubia years and it never gets wet nor do the egg crates. Never needed to clean them out
Very informative video thank you. I've set up a small cricket colony without the bran on the floor,also I've used the bug food from the shops with some greens. Do you think this is sufficient. I manage to keep them for a good while like this. But I must agree they can have an odour but nowhere near as bad as when you first buy them.

I don’t use fruit it’s too messy and attracts a lot of fruit flies but I do use carrots 👍😊
I kept some but a few must have escaped and a year later I’m still finding adults round the house 😬 how can you prevent escapes

i disagree, my adult toga starburst only comes out for locust, same as all my pokies.......but each spider can differ over time.
That’s just a spider used to one food type which in itself is not a good thing a varied diet is always better but I still don’t like locusts 😂
Wicked Video Boss and camera lady as always Massive Respect. Could you tell me if keeping B lateralis at 80-85 All the time will speed up there life cycle as obviously it speeds up everything else. in the wild they wouldn't be under that temperature consistently as fluctuations would occur that's gotta be healthier for prolonged life and generally stronger roaches.
Mine are kept at 80f and do really well 👍

How long do your adults live after final molts cause mine have been breeding like mad for about 2-3 months solid I'm now starting to get the first lot of ootheca hatching but I'm also loosing fair few of the adults to which hadn't been happening. I was wondering if it's to do with over crowding or age.

Hi Dave, I know brand doesnt matter and what not but where do you find your big egg crates? Ive had a colony in the past and looking to set up another two dubia and turkestan ones soon but always found finding the huge egg crates difficult and ended up with random bits of various size egg boxes I had. Ordering them online they wanted ridiculous prices!

Thanks for the great video Dave. I set up my red runner colony as per your video 2 years ago and they are still breeding like flies. Question on food- you mentioned in your previous video that you used chick growing mash. Is that a good food source to still use with fish flakes, or should I switch to the chicken pellets in this video? Or perhaps mix the 3 together? Thanks

Most females are mature when they reach 2/3 to 3/4 of their final size, but since that can be hard to gauge, your best bet is to wait for your female to moult and look at the spermathecae. If they are hardened and a solid dark colour, that means she is mature. Best of luck!

My roaches don't bother my Mrs but my fruit fly's I get alot of ear ache over. Don't breed dart frogs people you will get ear ache. Plus my male leucomelas sings his hart out alot. I get ear ache.

They will breed at lower temps just much slower , ive not had them below about 74 f

I love my Brazilian Salmon Pink Bird Eater.
It's a giant Tarantula but what a great pet.
It'll burrow if given enough dirt & it'll plug the burrow when in molt.
Then when molted it'll open the burrow & hang out at the opening when hungry.
IT DOESN'T GET ANY EASIER THAN THAT!
You'll know 100% when it's hungry & when it's NOT.
I consider it a crime to raise a tarantula that burrows but to NOT give it enough dirt to burrow completely. In other words 99% is these Tarantula channels are DOING IT WRONG.
Best is always relative. How old are you? How much do you want to see the spider? Do you mind having a spider with an attitude problem or are you okay with not too much interaction? Are you interested in fancy colors/behavior/size or something completely different? Are you a fan of lots of webbing?
That'll give us in the comments a better picture to recommend a spider.

hi im total noob (except from the time as a kid i caught some jumping spiders on my wall and fed them in a jar. for a while) im recently getting more interested in these fantastic creatures and am toying with the idea of owning one. or two.. terrestrial as i wanna see it as it'll be a solitary spider collection. one thats easy going so a new world for temperament i think.. one that doesnt web too much and colours or hairs not too much of an issue@@rebel4466
hi i have and have learnt the rough differences between arboreal terrrstrial subterrainean and that babboon spiders are a no go as a noob! just wanted an actual pointer to a spider that would be a good choice. ive had lizards before so caring for a tanked animals isnt new to me either. @@daveslittlebeasties

Look into dubia roach.
They don't smell.
Once set up they're almost hands free. It DOESN'T get any easier to do.
Actually my gf was who wanted to start raising them. I thought it was so off limits to even ask her that I never did lol. She asked me after looking into them.
