I'm 79. I've worn contact lenses since my early twenties. I'm quite severely myopic, near-sighted. I'm almost legally blind to drive. I can read without contacts but have to hold things quite close. I've had multi-focal contacts for the past two years. They have changed my life and I love them. It's very close to having the kind of vision I had when I was younger. I can see sharp to read, work with my computer, and to drive.
I find it refreshing that you didn't edit your little verbal stumble "thurlies" it was cute and endearing and makes you a real human that we can relate to
I just had an complete comprehensive eye exam at a respected eye practice and didn’t learn any of this. I still can’t see ANYTHING up close. I had no idea multifocal contacts even existed until I saw this. Thank you for the great info!
I would LOVE to use the drops! I am definitely in the 45 group, and I have been trying to ignore it. Thank you for mentioning that it is distressing for this to happen, as you are 100% correct.
Dr. D, no mention of strengthening the ciliary muscles and reducing the plus lens so your eyes don't get weaker. My reading is getting better slowly. I rarely use reader and i'm 50.
Beautiful and intelligent professional presentation for sure the best I’ve ever seen! Thank you Dr. D for pointing out that Mono vision options for low diopter corrections are often quite feasible and presbyopia drops would be mind blowing! Are presbyopia eye drops still under review for approval by the FDA?
What I would do for eye drops that I could wear during the day. My presbyopia is getting so bad that I'm starting to feel even for distances that aren't that close. Wearing reading glasses when when I'm out or when I'm doing things around the house is a real pain. They make me feel dizzy, blur my vision at certain distances and aren't convenient at all.
reading these comments as a 26yr old who was diagnosed in her younger ages… is WILD to me. It hadn’t started bothering me till this past month. This sucks.
I'm myopic, in my 70's but I find that instead of needing to "reach away" I get perfect focus by removing my glasses and bringing the object close, even as close as 6 inches. What's that about? Many thanks for your fascinating and informative series.
Oooh I forgot to mention that! Myopes can take their glasses off and read even in presbyopia since your natural clear focal point is up close. Depending on the level of near sightedness you may have to hold your reading material close or far. Many myopes continue to wear distance only glasses and take them off to read. 👍🏻 you’re welcome, thanks for watching!
Me too, I’m Myopic -5 diopters, I cannot focus close-up or at intermediate with my distance glasses 👓 But when I remove my glasses, I can focus clearly at 6 inches! Very handy for threading a needle or removing a splinter!
I hear cataract surgery corrects without dry eye issues like Lasik. Tough when your not a senior yet. Peripheral vision is important too, so I'll be saving $ for the surgery.
Mine started to get worse at 37. I think the job I had at the time actually played a role in jump-starting it but I imagine it was going to happen either way. I waited 8 more years before I looked in to glasses. My arm was no longer long enough to focus on things. It was a light prescription and I got progressive lenses. When I first put them on it worried me. Everything was all 'warpy' looking when I would move my head around and it wasn't something I could just do all the time. After a few days, it was quite a bit better and maybe 2 weeks in it wasn't an issue. Its been a year and a half now and if I try to see the warping I sort of can but even then its hard to detect. It surprised me to see how good the brain is at filtering visual distortions out. I think I am ready to get some with transitions lenses on my next exam.
I enjoyed your video very much! I am in my second week of Monovision with Synergeyes hybrid contacts and am very happy with it so far. I had RK years ago so I am not a candidate for Multifocal lenses. One more checkup in two weeks to confirm I have the right correction. Monovision to me is like seeing in 3D or Stereo! 👍🏾
I would absolutely be interested in the 1 eyedrop every day. I've worn glasses for last 10 yrs. I do NOT like them. I spent waaay too much on frames & was fitted incorrectly, causing glasses to fall down on my nose. I'm pushing them back up seems like every 2 min. So annoying. Want to wear contacts but I have "allergies" says Dr. I think my test ducts are clogged; eyes mat all day, no itch. Can't wear eye makeup. I can pull looks like strings from my eyes. Going to see another Dr in Feb , hoping she will help me. I've been dealing with eyes matting for 4 yrs & it's annoying & may sound crazy but depressed me.
I would love to just take a drop every day. Can't wait for this. I had no problems with my vision until I was actually in my mid-50s. I'm 68 now and I'm still losing more ability to see things clearly up close and intermediate (computer).
Hello Dr, I'm 63 old and I have just a little bit of cataract, I have hypermetropia, astigmatism and presbyopia, I'm wearing a progressive eyes glasses since 10 years, I tried the progressive lenses but I couldn't tolerate it because my eyes keep watering all days long when I was wearing it. Do you think it's possible to do a surgery to implant lenses with a very little of cataracts. Till know my presbyopia keep going up. Thank you Dr.
I tried multifocal contact lenses and they aren't good. Long distance is marginally improved, close up marginally improved. Neither are good, though. I'm only 41 and the close up vision issue hit me suddenly this year, not gradually.
I've had the monvision in contacts. Was actually easy to get used to. I wish they had come out with these drops earlier, but I know my vision is way past that now.
I am 58 and got my cataract removed 3 months ago. I chose mono focal minus 2 lenses for both eyes. Fantastic. I read without glasses. I don’t need glasses most of the time. This is the best solution for everybody. No cons whatsoever.
Great video, Thank you! I have an appt. for contacts. I use progressive glasses now. I am interested in contacts so I can use my binoculars, camera, and eye protection goggles during woodwork. I have heard that multifocal contacts take a long time to get used to. We will see what the doc says. I appreciate your Time. Angel from The Bay
Lovely informative video. Am 51 and myopic @ -9.0 and presbyopia @ +2.0. Trying very hard to find the right contact lenses and have tried Acuvue, Alcon, SEED. But nothing is really that sharp. Got myself a progressive lens made, which is not too bad. Wanted to go for a Lasik but you have reconfirmed what other opticians are saying that wait for cataract to develop and then maybe do a multifocal transplant. if you have any other options maybe even for a multifocal contact lenses then please do let me know. Thanks !
My dad is 87 and still isn't far sighted. He can read prescription bottles up close. Of course I didn't inherit that attribute. I can't wear contacts anymore because I can't see anything close up even couple feet away an I don't want to keep putting reading glasses on so I just look over my glasses
there are no options for treatment, lazik, PRK, Monovision cannot correct Presbyopia if your over 50, im going to try PresbyVision if that will help I just hope its not monovision cause monovision gives you uneven vision and its not even clear its blurry
Can you explain to me why I had perfect eyesight until I was 40, only needed +1.00 initially, but now 53 and need +2.50, but still quite a few people in their 50’s and older that don’t wear glasses for anything? Is it possible to have perfect eyesight your whole life if you live to at least your 60’s? I’ve seen quite a few people my age and older look down at their smartphones with no problem, no squinting or holding it farther away.
Can you say what the drops are called or what the active ingredient in them is? There is an over-the-counter product on the market currently that claims to be for presbyopia and aging eye issues, but the product you are talking about is not yet available, correct? Do you know if it will only be available by prescription, and if it will be in other countries as well as U.S.? Seems like I've been waiting for these drops since this problem started for me several years ago! Thank you.
The drop that I am most familiar with (I'm on their advisory board) is Brimochol. Here's a link to more info. www.biospace.com/article/releases/visus-therapeutics-announces-fda-acceptance-of-ind-for-presbyopia-correcting-eye-drop/#:~:text=BRIMOCHOL%20is%20an%20investigational%20drug%20designed%20to%20be,%28an%20alpha-2%20agonist%29%2C%20two%20well-studied%20and%20FDA-approved%20medicines. It's definitely exciting! I am hoping we will have a drop within the year!
Dr D, Today I am starting ciliary muscle bootcamp. I will report back in 6 weeks how much this helps presbyopia. I made this comment so I will finally stick to it. I always quit after day 4 or 5 when I improve some. I know the benefits of weight training, fights father time so im hoping this works like all my other workouts. Presbyopia just sucks. I can mostly get by without readers but still. I WANT MY ACCOMMODATION back lol
@@vidya1031 Well funny story, I quit after the near/intermediate vision got better then I started keto and could read even better!!! But the focusing muscle slowly got weaker. 3 weeks ago I tried to read something that I was supposed to be able to read and I got pissed when I needed readers lol Been back at it for 3 straight weeks only missed one day 15 min a day. OMG after 2 weeks I really noticed it, Its at an all time best since lost my close up. I cant read the tiniest of print on like a small bottle. I mean a super small print. I can read almost everything else. Not HD of course. I will give another update when I go to a maintenance plan. I really enjoy not using readers at 50 yr old. Im the ONLY one at work that doesnt need them around my age
Bootcamp stalled after some good improvements, ciliary muscle got weak again so Im back at it with good results 3 weeks in. I will do a maintainance plan when improvment stops this time. Havnt needed readers in a solid week
Great video. I have watched a few of these and really like yours a lot. Then I realized why I thought you were cool when I saw your name. We share the same last name! Maybe we're cousins Lol. 👍
I love that you did not edit your bloopers to make the video without flaws, feels more real! Thanks for sharing.

Be careful to not let the lens do all the work or you will go backwards fast.
I’m frustrated with presbyopia. Can’t wait for the drops. Thanks so much for the information. It is very helpful.
