I just had refractive lens replacement on my right eye yesterday. The Lens is a PanOptix Multifocal lens. Yesterday everything was very blurry and my eyes were still dilated a lot. Today my vision was 20/20 with my follow up, but still blurry. As the day went on, my vision has gotten better. Right now my vision is around 95% clear - I can see everything but still a bit blurry. Zero pain, eyes are not dry, no itching, and procedure was painless. I am going in next week for my left eye. With the PanOptix I can see close, mid, and far with no more glasses - ever. So far I am very happy. When my vision clears up I will be so happy! Thanks for all of your amazing videos - they have helped so much!

If I may ask: Would you be able to explain how the PanOptix Multifocal lens works and what advantage does it offer?
Finally 2 very personal questions: At what age did you undergo surgery, what was the cost (I assume $US)?
I am about to commence my journey of testing and having cataract surgery - LASIK served a purpose for 18 years achieving quite successfully mono vision (takes time and patience to reprogram the brain for acceptance). I am looking (pun unintended) at all possible options for improved vision and maybe stereo vision.

I wish I would have seen this before I had my cataract surgery two days ago. The instructions I was given along with the written papers or somewhat confusing but this was so clear and to the point I think this video should be shown in every waiting room so that patients get the straight information and they get it clearly. If you go in and have your cataract removed and you have any kind of problem like mine was then you're not feeling so great when you come out and you're not listening to everything that's been told to you but you because you've got a little pain going on there.

I live in the UK, and last May had cataracts removed plus lens implanted on the NHS. After wearing glasses for chronic short-sightedness for fifty+ years, I have better sight than ever, and only use glasses for reading. The painless procedure took two hours, and after tea and biscuits went home wearing eye shields, removed the next day. I used eye drops for four weeks. Funny that clothes bought in recent years aren't the colour I thought they were!

I had the Clareon PanOptix Multifocal done 2 days ago in my right eye. I have some minor halos from headlights and stop lights but they are symmetrical/cool/neat looking like something from a video game. Don't think these halos will bother me much even If they never go away. They're nothing like the weird asymmetrical distortions and weird ghosting and/or double/x6 vision of LEDs and stoplights I had before surgery. So far so good. No pain. Very minor blur and flickering currently but I expect that to go away. I could read the smallest, crazy small print on a cardboard eye card test the day after surgery, yesterday. (Computer and phone are harder to view due to lighting) Old plasma TV looks great though! Left eye will be done 2 weeks from now. When I compare my left and right eyes, colors are significantly, radically brighter/better/normal/correct with the new lens. In particular, my WHITE refrigerator is pure white again (not eggshell white or light tan/beige white) and my RED Ford truck has probably bumped up 10 or 12 shades on the visible color spectrum.😀

Thank you so much for this. I am a 58 year old female, live in South Africa and have cataracts in both eyes, the right much worse than the left. I have to go through our State hospital for surgery and have been told that my surgery is only scheduled for next year, September 2023, because of the fact that Covid put a spanner in the works for operations and only the most urgent are currently being done. I am so glad that I have seen your video and now know what to expect before and after, because I am pretty sure that I will not be told even half of what you have spoken about. The opthalmologist even said that they inject local anaesthetic into the lower eye, and don't use anaesthetic drops. And I probably won't be given even half the care and information that you provide.

Dr Wong just watching this video has removed much of my apprehension and anxiety with my upcoming cataract surgeries in June 2022. I shall be meeting with my surgeon on May 10, 2022 for my "pre op" consultation in Prescott, AZ. I understand I shall be receiving an IV mild sedative of Versed to bring calmness, never had that previously, perhaps the Valium is a better choice? I am so very impressed with your videos Dr Wong. Your videos offer so much information and explanations of the cataract procedures. I was told "no lifting from the waist, bending, cooking, no water on my face, etc." Now after hearing your video (upgraded information from former restrictions) I feel much more relaxed referencing potential restrictions. Living alone some restrictions are not optimally a "good thing." I also prefer to have the eyedrops PMB rather than the Injectable end of surgery? I do use the Systane Hydration PF daily now for the dry eye. Thank you Dr Wong this video is absolutely fantastic, exceptionally informative. This is my 3rd viewing. If I lived in the Austin area I would have utilized your care. Will be reviewing this video again I am sure. This updated video should be viewed by any/all patients scheduled for cataract surgery.

Right now, 13 hrs post surgery, I still have some burning and my vision is blurry. Hopefully that's better by morning. My surgeon waa pretty thorough In explaining things, but I honestly don't even remember seeing him today, probably because of the sedative injection. I remember absolutely nothing about the surgery except talking to nurses, and knowing how I react to sedative meds, I probably talked the entire time. Meds like that make me talk, talk. Talk.

Big difference from how cataract surgery was many years ago. I had a friend who had cataract surgery in the early '70s and she had to stay in the hospital with her head between sandbags to keep her from moving it. Can't recall how long they kept her like that but it was quite an experience.

I had lasik cataract surgery 1 1/2 years ago. I had extreme astigmatism in my left eye, so I had it done first. I had the right eye done one week later. I Ontario Canada, lasik isn't covered by our provincial health insurance. I had made an appointment to see a traditional surgeon, and it would have been 6 month wait for a consultation and probably 6 months to 12 months after the consult for surgery. My Optometrist suggested trying to contact the Lasix clinic. I had a consultation appointment 1 week later, and surgery 2 weeks after that. I was honestly a miracle for me. I had been wearing glasses since I was 8 years old for amblyopia. Now I have 20/20 distance vision and wear reading glasses. I was so happy to pay the cost of the lasix. I realize that not everyone can afford it, but highly recommend to those who can. Excellent presentation.

Can you also post on what questions to ask the eye surgeon?. Thank you Doc. One point I would like to highlight, to get your site popular you need to start adding tags #. Whosoever helping you post your videos on UA-cam please mention this to them. You have wealth of information in this clip.

I'm glad to know those painful anesthetic needles are no longer needed. I had a cataract removed from my right eye in 1980 and when they stuck those needles in behind my eye, it was extremely painful. Artificial lenses were fairly new at the time, and not many places did that, so I went 10 years using contacts in that eye. In 1990, I finally got the implant, but they still used those painful needles to deaden the eyelid, and whatever moves the eyeball. Now, I have one developing in my other eye, so am happy to hear it will be much less painful when the time comes. Btw, I was never nervous or apprehensive about the surgery, only the damn needles.

Learned a ton watching Dr. Wong before I had lens replacement surgery. I'm 10 months post surgery and could not be more satisfied. I'm 58, and had mild cataracts but they were in the center of my field of view. Driving at night became dangerous-the glare from oncoming cars headlights was unbearable. I also always had to wear readers for reading my phone or computer, etc. I chose to have the Vivity lens in both of my eyes. My vision is spectacular. I see amazingly better at night, no glares from oncoming headlights, and my vision is super sharp. I have readers but go weeks without using them. I only need them to read the tiniest of print (like a prescription bottle font). I had lasik when I was 36, and that helped distance vision but for reading, forget it, I couldn't read anything without readers after I turned 45. Do your homework, and you'll know which option you should go with.

I wish my eye clinic had been this clear.... I was told NOTHING about artificial tears. This would have been helpful today as my eye burned and felt scratched from being dry. I didn't get a Valium so there was no reaction or wearing off of that. Also I was told no food or drink 12 hours before surgery. My surgery was at 10:30 am so I was really hungry by the time I got home.

The worst part for me actually was 4...yes 4 nurses trying to put in an IV.. I am very very bruised and sore.the first 3 nurses jabbed me 6-7 times.. I ended up with blown veins etc. I asked for them to get another nurse and I said, 1 try and if you don’t get it, I’m getting dressed and leaving. She got it 😊 I had told my nurse where the easiest spot was when I had IVs before. The fourth nurse listened to me and got the IV in on the first try

I remember being with my son and daughter-in-law when nurses were trying to put an IV in my five or six week old grandson. He was screaming and they kept trying. I finally said "STOP! How many times have you worked on an infant?" Zero was the answer. I said you need to go get someone who has experience with infants. In the meantime my grandson calmed down. The next person got it quickly with zero crying.

Had my Cataract surgery about 1 1/2 months ago and only saw your review today. Great presentation and very informative, wish I'd seen this before my surgery. At least now I know it was Valium that was given to me prior to the surgery, always wondered what that was. When I was waiting for my surgery, I felt a sudden spike in my anxiety levels, it was so bad I found it hard to breath, thank goodness for the valium effects kicking in I guess. Also the 1st night after the surgery, I did not wear that protection cap cause it felt too rigid and uncomfortable, wish I had now.

I'm nervous about permanent dry eye, and decreases night vision.
I am excited about the corrective lens I choose - fixing my nearsightedness, and astigmatism.

I had no eyedrops last year when I had my surgery in FL, and no valium ahead of time, because they wanted patients to be awake to look directly into that awful, extremely bright light when the surgeon barked at me to do so. That bright light was the WORST part of the op and was very difficult for me. Glad it's over.

Excellent video, thanks Dr. Wong! I watched this AFTER I had the cataract surgery on both of my eyes. Your rules are much less strict than those of my surgeon! I was told to consume nothing but a cup or two of water after midnight the night before my surgery. I was instructed not to remove the eye shield he put on my eye, until my post-op visit the next morning. I was also told not to wash my own hair for a few days, unless someone else did it for me. I was told to keep using the drops with the Prednisolone and the 2 other meds 3x a day until the bottle is empty. (I was given a second bottle when i had the other eye done.) He also told me to wear the eye shield when I go to bed at night, for one week, “no exceptions!” I didn’t realize that i should have worn the shield when I took an afternoon nap! I did rub my eye a little bit, but i stopped as soon as i realized I was doing that no-no! Fortunately, no harm was done (he has checked my eyes since I did that.)
I’m so glad that the surgeries are done and over with, and as you said, it was really nothing to be nervous about! (I wasn’t that nervous! Honest! I trust my surgeon. He has been my ophthalmologist for almost 6 years.). I had severe astigmatism and now I have Toric lenses in both eyes, and 20/20 vision for distance! I love that! 😊
