The crazy thing about this is that he is not required to attend graduation to get his diploma and yet they withhold it because of a dress code violation. That's just petty!
That’s my thought on this as well. They typically hand them a diploma cover at the ceremony and give the diploma separately. The ceremony is just a costume party. He could go up there and take a dump on the state and it shouldn’t affect getting his diploma at all, although he may be in legal trouble for indecent exposure or something like that.
@Headstrong Republic i don't know where you went to high school but neither i nor any of my college friends that went to different high schools signed anything but we did have a rehearsal where we got dresscoded. It was the responsibility of the staff to tell the teen that he couldn't wear the flag
It's quite possible that he didn't drape the flag over himself until he was on his way to the stage. It's not like he had to wear it the entire time he was sitting.
Exactly, he wasn’t given his “rolled up paper” he chose to attend. He was being ignorant too. I don’t understand why no one from his family talked some sense into him. I’m Mexican myself, proud of course but I know better not to disrespect this country in that way. It is my second home
*EXACTLY!* 😂 What you're receiving on stage is LITERALLY just for the ceremony & picture. In reality it's actually empty, your diploma is most likely not even printed yet, it's still at the factory 😂
I remember at my graduation they told us if we were out of dress code we wouldn't be allowed to walk on stage and get ours and that was if we decorated our caps too. This is way too late to tell him he cant get it. And let's be honest here, you're telling me no one noticed the bright flag BEFORE the ceremony started?

Multiple people are saying they did, and that he knew what he was doing. It's basic dress code, there's no need try to look like a victim. I can't say refusing to give him the diploma is the best idea but if they genuinely warned him and let him know what was going on then of course he needs to apologize for not following rules.
He had at least four years of high school to figure out the rules, with the dress code included. Why would he need to be told what he should already know, within minutes or hours before showing up?
To recieve a diploma you are REQUIRED to complete "x" amount of credits over a 4 year stint. Also depending on the school system a certain GPA. In no code of conduct anywhere it says a student will not receive their diploma at graduation for any reason at graduation ceremony. Atleast in Florida and NY school systems. This brought to you by a former school teacher.
Even if it was against the dress code, why did no one tell him that BEFORE he walked. Like did no teacher o authority bother to tell him while he was seated or in line?? Why wait until he is at the front? Ive seen students get dress coded at grad ceremonies and the school still gave them theor diplomas because it has nothing to do with u graduating. They didnt need to be assholes about it.
@Headstrong Republic he was standing in line, I literally just graduated and while standing in line they made sure everyone’s tassels were on the right side of the cap, made sure the pins were on the right side of the stole and that we didn’t look a mess going up on stage, so why would every single teacher and staff let him sit down with the flag and get in line with it on, AS WE SEE ON VIDEO.
Based on this news source we have no way of knowing when or how he put on the flag. Also with covid who knows what things are in place for stricter and safer school graduation
@@the-pan-potato3139 tbh, I don’t think either side is totally right here. It’s pretty stupid for the school to deny him the diploma just because of (what I strongly suspect to be) their thinly veiled racism against Latinos. @@shadowreaverrising1753 I don’t trust the school on that tbh. I think if the student wore the red white blue, the school probably woulda shrugged it off even tho it’s against dress code. These kids today are stupid with no respect for rules. A Mexican flag has zero to do with graduation. If the Mexican flag was that important why not go to school in Mexico.
The administration deliberately waited until the last moment to do this. He was at his ceremony they could have told him any time before he walked. School admins should apologize.

The fact that the school is detaining his diploma dependent on an apology is ludicrous. Obviously he was able to be clever enough and went through with his mischief. @@enrgy-xh5uq I have had a few days to reflect on this issue. I agree that policy exists for a reason. With such a policy I believe there should also be training on how to handle situations. I don't believe it should matter what flag represents his culture or background. I believe that there is an appropriate way to ask a student to remove their flag by not putting a student on the spotlight in front of his family and school. They should have just been a little more sensitive. The school failed to address it appropriately by not pulling him to the side and asking him without putting him on the spotlight. At that point the ball would be in the students hands to not make a scene by disrespecting or getting loud towards staff. I believe that if he was allowed to sit and walk up to the stage then he should have been allowed to walk all the way through because they failed to provide him an opportunity to remove it without embarrassing him. I empathize with the student because I could feel how humiliated I would be if I didnt get addressed in private about such a big issue. I do not believe this warrants an apology to the school as the school also has fault by not providing him a safe and appropriate setting to remove it. Pulling people aside is important.
Don't confuse schooling with education. Yeah sure the school is dumb for not letting him get that thing, but you've got to realize how much of a scam the school system really is. You don't learn anything about money but that's the reason you get a job, its a joke

They should go ahead and give him his diploma and get the whole thing over with so they can fully enjoy the rest of their summer. No apologies necessary. Just put it in the mail. They're being really silly now.
The diploma doesn't even really mean anything other than symbology. It's a physical object representing your graduation but the official record is held by the state. Oddly, It's really similar to the flag he wore. For example, if the flag he was wearing was confiscated it doesn't mean the country was some how taken away. It would be the same with the diploma. It makes no sense to hold either symbol hostage.
@Headstrong Republic That's foolish. If a student violates dress code they don't have to be allowed to participate but holding the diploma they worked for over 4 years is arbitrary and capricious, and violates their 4th and 5th amendment rights. Making then sign a last minute contract or else they don't get their diploma also violates students' rights. The kid has been punished when he wasn't given the diploma on stage. That's enough. @Headstrong Republic why they let him in the ceremony with the flag on his back? They should've told him in the beginning of the ceremony that that was prohibited.
@Headstrong Republic yeah I have graduated. They give you a specific seat and they check your name and if you're present. Plenty of time to see if you are wearing an appropriate attire.
@Headstrong Republic idk why you’re calling me a liar when I’ve seen it with my own eyes. And at my school they literally stand next to you when you go up the stage.
The fact that there was enough time and administrators, to pull him aside to inform him of the dress code before stepping on stage, bothers me. He was not informed while he waited in line or stood up from his chair, for that matter... The fact that they chose to publicly humiliate him at that moment as he walked across stage and at that exact moment feels as though it was purposely done to prove a point and/or to even penalize him... Now that is childish and unprofessional on the schools part.
The graduates were told BEFORE ever showing up for the ceremony, there was no reason for the adults who explained what was allowed to confront him before going onstage. He chose to buck against the system and the system gave him the punishment he was due. When told that graduates could distinguish themselves on their caps but all graduates were to wear the traditional gown without embellishments and someone decides to ignore those rules because they are "special" and rules dont apply to them the administration is required to not allow them the same experience as all the other students who have followed those rules. Now for a hmmm moment, what would have happened if the student was denied their diploma because they were wearing an American flag over the gown. I really believe almost everyone declaring him a victim for his own actions would have a completely different opinion if he had worn an American flag.
It was about the dress code and he broke it. He wanted attention for being a Mexican, who graduated from an American school, and wanted everyone to know it. Meanwhile, there's probably 10 - 30 other immigrants, or more, who's parents came from another country being respectful and wearing the right dress attire. As for the diploma, they hand out fake diplomas at the ceremony while the real ones get mailed out. This saves the school time from having to sort through several hundred students and if they mess up the order, then all the diplomas gets messed up. Hence the fake blank piece of paper that gets handed out.

Never seen anyone not have it zipped As for this young man, it looks like this is a bit of a tempest in a teapot. It doesn't look like he was denied his actual diploma. Just that the principal had a knee jerk reaction to his appearance, and as a result she brought issues upon herself and the school. As for "following rules" and "getting along" why would you expect anyone to follow rules after four years of having a president who followed none, along with numerous examples of people who did follow rules only to be sucker-punched by the way the administration of our nation sought to punish entire states or territories for not being grateful that he was moldering away in the White House and demonstrating just how little he wanted to serve the American People. It would be great if we could all follow rules. But our children have been subjected to the worst possible examples recently. Not least of which, the people who demand that their rights are more important than the rights of all members of society. With the abject selfishness demonstrated daily since the Pandemic began, what do you expect?

Ikr! These schools don’t have anything better to do than taking someone’s hard work diploma just cause of some dress code. She was wearing sandals so it doesn’t make sense.
Dress codes are there for a reason. If you allow one person to break it, then you'll have to allow everybody to break it. As for the fake diploma, the real ones are mailed to the house so walking the stage isn't even necessary. He wanted attention so he could show off how he's the only person graduating who's parents are from another country. However, I'm willing to bet that there's at least 10 - 20 graduating students, besides him, who's parents are from another country.
@@saysoun752 I agree 100% dress codes are there for a reason. These kids need to learn the life lesson that dress code doesn't end in school. Our society has dress code in many places. To buy food in a store it's private property and stores have dress codes. Police station have dress codes. Restaurants, libraries, business, courthouses, the list goes on have dress codes. As these young people transition into adulthood they need to learn society has rules and dress codes are apart of that. They're kids anymore, high school said you broke the rules, then u broke the rules the kid has to be an adult deal with it and say I'm sorry for violating the rules.
Now that I think about it I'm surprised the parents didn't understand that concept smack their kid in the back of the head walk him into the office and apologize

The fact that she wants an apology is selfish. It’s only going to stir up more problems in that school for next year and spread to other surrounding schools. I agree with the dress code as well but who is the teenager and who is the adult, who is the student and who is the educator. 🤔
Who cares? Both of those factors are irrelevant. People don’t deserve any more respect just because they’re older. They’re an educator, yet… they’re denying a child his education because of their bigotry.
This will become a trend...I don't doubt someone will wear "don't tread on me" flag or a Confederate flag next year or next couple years to stir the pot on this here event. It'll be a vexing antagonizing insulting graduation flag olympics. Don't quote me on it...but watch. Wardrobe speaks volumes. Mexico's flag is a beautiful flag.
@Headstrong Republic that's a lie

I attended graduation today. my 20th since I began teaching high school. We allow students to honor their heritage and their values. I saw that a lot of Native Americans had sashes that were indicative of their tribe, and other students had face masks with a rainbow flag.
The only thing that surprised me was that about 10 of the girls didn't have their robes zipped up, and every last one of them was wearing a tight-fitting dress that barely made it a few inches below the top of their thighs. Never seen anyone not have it zipped
As for this young man, it looks like this is a bit of a tempest in a teapot.

This is exactly what my husband and I were just talking about. I agree with everything your saying. This is a cap 👩🏻🎓 👨🎓 and gown graduation as it’s the dress code for any graduation and he didn’t follow it. I’m Mexican and I’m upset what he did. I understand he’s proud, but he should have worn his flag after the ceremony. Respect the country who is giving you this opportunities. He was wrong!!!
Exactly
I’m sorry, he earned his diploma! You can’t deny someone’s diploma for dress code. That’s dumb!
Y’all could’ve saved your whining on my post about my opinion. What I said stands! He EARNED his diploma. Dress code should just get you barred from the ceremony if that’s what they want to do, but he deserves his diploma. I don’t care what the country is actually, so don’t assume you know anything about me. Last, some of y’all harping on rules probably never have that standard for real, egregious rule breaking that happens in this country. Cry me a river and have a great day!

How about " sorry but your fired"

To the schools defense they were still trying to “fix” grades so that the students that “graduated” could graduate. (Cough, cough. Principal and counselors changing grades behind teachers backs)
Of course, because they are penalized for failing people. Its easier to just... pass someone. Failing upwards is a thing in this country that started out in the 90s with the "Everyone gets a trophy" and "no child left behind" crap. You fail, you get passed to the next grade anyway because the school gets fined tons of money if they dont.
