Restoring Dented Vintage "Tommy" Lighter - Lighter Restoration

- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- I will be restoring this dented vintage Tommy-style lighter. I restored one of these almost a year ago and that restoration was one of my first popular videos so now after passing 500 000 subscribers I wanted to try to restore one better. That video was also where I originally got the idea to get my nickel plating set up. I didn't have one at the time so I started plating things a bit later. Starting my new channel "Odd Experiments" this was a perfect opportunity to show in detail how anyone can make a simple plating set up with relatively cheap parts. I will link that video here soon once it is posted. Link to the video: • How to make simple DIY...
As a difference to the previous lighter I restored in this one the wheel was attached with a screw that could be removed. In the previous lighter there was no hole to remove the screw. After the disassembly I decided to try to make the dent repair on the tank much easier. I noticed the tank seam running around it and the bottom and top parts were soldered together. I used mini torch and tried to separate those but for some reason that didn't work. Instead I was able to remove the pipe on the tank. Now I had two holes on the top which made it much easier to push out the dents. I used tool made from nail I made in my first lighter restoration video. After I had most of the dents removed.
I gave the parts quick polish to better evaluate how much sanding was needed. I sanded the surfaces flat with 400 grit sand paper. After this I polished the parts with metal polishing compound on a buffing wheel with the bench grinder I restored in my last weeks video.
After polishing I had to re-solder the pipe to the tank. Used the tiny torch and some electrical solder. I tested it for leaks at this point. Now the parts were cleaned with acetone. Prior to plating no other cleaning was done because polishing had removed all the oxides from the surface already.
For nickel plating I used a system I made for "Odd Experiments" video. It is not much different from my normal system but I still wanted to show it in action. Learn more about that from the other channel. After plating I disassembled the lighter and added new cotton, wick, flint and spring. Spring is just part of long spring I bought to cut pieces to my lighters if needed.
Tip: a free way to support my channel is access amazon/ebay to do your regular shopping through these links. I will get a small fee from each product bought on amazon after clicking these links, whether it was the linked product or a different one.

The plating video on my other channel is now out. I have link at the end screen and and in the description. Which one of these Tommy lighters is your favorite, the brass or the nickel one?
The BRASS ONE BROOOO... I LIKE IT VERY2 MUCH
Where do u buy those lighters and stuff? Is it just amazon or ebay?
Odd Tinkering dude that’s awesome
Nickel, mostly because of the shine, and it will wear with time to have a nice brass patina as well.
The nickel one cuz it's shiny and looks so cool
Very Nice job my friend. 👍 Glad to see that your new German bench grinder came to action with a nice polishing job. From your neighbor in west ..Jämtland" 😉
So you know each other.
Where is Jamatland

I love your sense of humor man. When the lighter was trying to escape and when your hand caught on fire 🤣. These are the best videos on youtube!
me: well it is 2 in the morning i should get going to bed i guess and listen to sleep music.
*odd tinkering posts a video 3mins ago.*
me: well i guess that i am going to sleep for 4 hours.
Man I respect the hell out of you for what you're doing here. This is art, and you're an artist. More videos please! I can't watch enough!
19:41 Man, you scared the lights out of me when you put your hand on fire. Great video!
Does anyone else find OT's videos theraputic?
Me hahah
Me too, hahaha
Pure ASMR :-)
I use them to unwind before bed... thanks OT
Me .One before bedtime relaxes you.😀
Don’t let the asmr community find out about this
Annoying Tab we’re already here, getting all the tingles and relaxation :p
Sorry man... Too late
They already have and a dude has been stealing his videos without giving him credit. Search Best Relaxing ASMR. He has like 3000 subs but not one mention of Mr. Odd
@@bobsagely812 that's how I found this channel. Was going to the comments of that channel.
I found him through asmr video recommendations & haven't looked back. He is great & entertaining.
The lighter running away. How many takes was that? 😹
Maybe 3 and even that was because I couldn't quite film from the direction I wanted to
Odd Tinkering turned out great. Hilarious
George Lukas is a beginner compared to him... 😂
@@OddTinkering Hey I have a great antique lighter...geisha on one side and mt on other...3 tone lighter...Do you know where I might find information as to origin of lighter.?
Ficou tão bonito que dá vontade de ter um igual ! Parabéns pela restauração, ficou excelente !
This makes you want to sleep and keep you watching. It’s so therapeutic. So relaxed watching this. Keep up the amazing work.
Parabéns pela paciência e eficiência na restauração de um item tão pequeno 👍🤗🇧🇷

I really admire your work, my problem is I worry about getting too deep into something and not being able to fix it.
Love it.. The brass one brotherrrr... I want it.. Its was such a genuine stuff... Especially the Brass one.. Much more othentic and Suitable with timeless periode when it was made...
Hello. Good job bro.
Thanks man!
VERY reliable lighter. I've used one for years, different KW model but essentially the same - and definitely my favorite pocket lighter. A little simpler than the model you have, and always lights on the first flick, but the flame is not nearly that high. I've also done the same thing with the lighter fluid although I was also holding a paper towel that got a little on it - and no gloves. No serious burns, but it hurt for a few hours. The burn came while fooling with the lighter portion of a Wallace Baroque 1941 (introduced in 1941) table lighter designed to match their famous silverware pattern.
My gosh. Those are beautiful even now. Fantastic craftsmanship was used and all we remember old things are as rusty, dingy, moldy, broken things.
You really take on some tough lighter rebuilds, I thought I was doing ok rebuilding them, guess I was not as close as I thought. I really love the work that you do and thank you very much for what I have learned from your vids:)
Love your work. Definitely a delight watching you choose the correct chemicals to restore these gems. Keep up the great job! 💪🏻👍🏻👏🏻‼️
An absolute thing of beauty restored to perfection. Well done, sir.
You're getting really good at hammering out dents.
Street food, poetry, and restoration video are the only thing I watch during this boring quarantine...
At first, the object looked like a lost cause. I was impressed that the original engineering required a wind screen hold to perfectly align with the wheel holding screw. That is precision. The end result is astounding.
Just as good as the first "Tommy" lighter video! You weren't kidding about having a stack of 'em too.
Awesome restoration on that Vintage "Tommy" Lighter !!!!!!!! You are a master at restoring vintage lighter's , Sir.
I love them both but i like the brass one more I think- though i might be biased since it was that restoration that brought me to the channel 😂
Agreed
Beautiful my good man. Absolutely beautiful. I love watching you restore cool stuff. Inspiring.
Someone seriously needs to get in touch with odd thinking and tell him about that ASMR channel that's just been downloading his videos
People do this they can't make their own content.
A woman I follow cal annty nella does testing of beauty things.
Another chancel has practily copied it 100% and just reposts the videos.
I like this restoration more so as you are more knowledgeable about restoration on them now. It is nice to see your talents evolve as well. Great job
My favorite lighter... Nickel Plated 👍😎👍 My favorite episode...ALL!!! Keep up the good work. Your talent for restoration is marvelous. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
That lighter looks great, you did a fine job. That grinder looks fantastic, love your videos. thanks for sharing.
Metabo:Good one.
Amazing work! Thanks for your time, it's great to see things being restored!
Refreshing to view restoration videos without any speaking. Great video by the way 10/10.
Beautiful, just beautiful! Love your work and love that lighter
Waw. Was für ein Unterschied. Sehr gut gemacht. Schönes Feuerzeug
10/10 UA-cam rabbit hole. I have a new addiction now....would recommend
Simply amazing job it's better than what it was like when new
I love both but the original will always have a special place in my heart. Nothing can replace Odd Tinkering accidentally catching fire
That was brilliant timing.
I was sitting there thinking that wearing rubber gloves while using a lighter isn't the best idea, then you set your hand on fire and youtube had a playback error as you did that.
...а я до последнего кадра думал, что это ИМКО, тем не менее, молорик, удачи тебе и здоровья!!!
Another awesome job! That was very satisfying to watch being restored. Excellent work!
Good job on the lighter :) Love your work.
Just like to point out that the rest bracket on the Metabo grinder wheel is still wrong way up ... The slot should be horizontal, as it was when the Metabo was unboxed.
Thanks youtube for at least once suggest me a good channel. Your videos are amazing sir. I really want a lighter like that now.
I loved the lighter running away bit
I watched the whole video and enjoyed every minute of it. Nice work, man!
You are an absolute wiz at getting those dents out. Great job.
Great job, Tinker! love both lighters!
I love you giving a humorous shout out to Tysy! 😂 I love watching you both! 😊❤
Ive been subscribed to your channel for along time since the beginning and man your videos get better and better! Love your work!!
Very cool, I like your ingenuity at getting the dents out. Also, thanks for sharing the plating and separate video (I subscribed). 👏👏👏
You can really see why the Zippo design is still around and still very successful when you compare it to many of these strange old lighter designs, beautiful though they are.
Hi ODD👋👋👋 good to see you 🤝🤝🤝 very good restoration lighter 👍👍👍🔥 you’re doing a wonderful job 👌🏽
Great job they both look awesome hard to choose just one. To bad you don't have another one like them you could use gun blue on it. Gotta love lighter fluid its a blast lol. Your videos are cool and awesome.

Of corpse.
And neither do you any good.

You should do an 'Odd Tools Restoration' and remove a bunch of the rust and clean up some tools you commonly use
Brilliant work! I really love the lighters that can be lit and just left on to be a little torch for private detectives :)
I wish I could one day recover such a machine
I have to say that was a cracking bit of restoration, at first I was thinking 'not another f*****g lighter', within a minute I was fully engrossed........................cheers!
Beautiful job on this restoration.
"You'll never catch me! FREDOOOOOOOM!!!" -catches it before falling to freedom- "DANG IT!"
Estoy aquí por San Jony...
I love that this channel somehow manages to have a sense of humor without being overbearing
I wonder if you could take a paper clip and twist it so that it is spring tensioned on the inside of the lighter with a piece of it hanging out to clip the negative lead to. It would not be perfect. It night give you better coverage.
These videos are so satisfying to watch. More please.
Would love to see you do one of the bigger art deco lighters if you could find one.
Master may I make a suggestion, next time try using a firecracker to pressurize and push out the dents. Like when we put firecrackers in tin cans when we were kids to straighten it out. I mean it worked for us....lol.. enjoying your great work..
Very Nice Restoration !!! You always do such Quality Work!! I think I preferred it Brass, but I know the plating is stronger.
Just want to say congratulations to you. I used to watch you awhile back making knives and other crafts i believe and just stumbled upon your videos again. Now i see your doing restoration videos... And jesus, you really just blew up out of nowhere?? Like insanely blew up. In such a short time! I can see why, theres something satisfying about these restoration videos seeing something old brought back to life, not to mention the unintentional asmr part to it that already adds a satisfaction factor. Keep up the videos :)
Cool to hear. Couple days ago I was wondering if many viewers from back then are still watching
Better than Asmr videos.
Nice restoration bro.👍🏻
Very nice job odd man. These videos are so pleasant to watch.
Extra hands! I always assumed you were somewhere north of Utsjoki and the closest pair of hands were 1000 miles away.
looks almost brand new again nice
The nickel one. So cool to watch your work. Thanks.
Restoration videos are asmr for the mechanically minded
You're one of my favorite channels!
Another great job. Looks beautiful you're very talented . What do you do with all the lighters you polish up ? Do you collect them as a hobby.
I like the gold one. Both are very nice.
Awesome running away scene! Great video!
19:42 *Don't try this at home!*
You Sir are a very talented man!
Just bought an old Dunhill WWII Trench Lighter. For $20.00 thankfully all it needed was a new flint wick and some fuel. It works like a champ using it for my cigarette smoking now.
Bruh I don't know why but 16:12 made me laugh, I just didn't expect it 😂😂
Wonderful engineering on this style of lighter. But I must say I prefer the zippo tried and true design over all. For one reason really. You won't lose the cover on a zippo.
It looks as though your pliers could use a bit of restorative care and polishing... lol Nice video.
Das beste Benzinfeuerzeug, KW mit Reservetank.
Gute Arbeit!
8:36 TysyTube wanted to show you more of his ice cream roll recipes lol
My Virgo moon really appreciates all your videos.
Wonderful restoration
Great Restoration work. I like the Brass Lighter Myself.
Love lighter restorations!😁
19:41 man I was scared😂😂😂 because I was wearing a headphone😂😂😂 but love your works no interference by talking, clickbsit. Love your videos❤❤❤
I like them both. Nice job on bringing them back to life.. Peace
Where do you keep your bag of lighters - buried in the back yard? LOL
Really good restoration!!!
Excellent my amigo your skills are pure magia.
This guy repairs without replacing
Very nice job !!
Tes vidéos sont toujours sympa à regarder et y a toujours un peu d'humour dedans, c'est cool.
Continu comme ça...

Listening to this on headphones gave me occasional eargasms
I prefer the Brass finish, but it is interesting to see the plating process.
