    Nice restoration! One remark: Your earth (yellow/green) wire should always be the longest, not the phase (brown) or neutral (blue) wire. In case you accidentally pull the cable out, the last one to go is the earth.

    Working with a friend (who had a lot more confidence than me) we stripped out the busted gearbox of a heavy old Holbrook lathe, to repair the reversing mechanism. It did not use many ball races, just bronze bearings all over the system. The solidified grease and oil was older than either of us. In order to do all this we had to remove the belt drive system, in it's heavy cast casing. That part alone was over 200Kg.
    We managed to fix the bodged up parts and get it all working again, as intended. It is still a good lathe with a taper turning attachment and reversing on the fly. It is amazing how solid and well made these old tools are. Once they are cleaned, with fresh bearings, they work like new.

    My friend had a workshop opposite a motor rewind company in Sheffield. Mostly working on big industrial motors from factories. So we regularly witnessed huge motors, some approaching 1000 Kg arriving, some burned out and being stripped and rebuilt It was fascinating.
    Being in Sheffield we had and used some very large buffing sets on stands in the polishing & grinding workshop; well away from Lathes and milling machines. It was a great place.

    Hi Restoration Guy. Great video! If you add a line that says 0:00 Introduction to the start of your list of timestamps, the timestamps will show as true chapters within the video. Also moving those motor end bells involves moving the shaft within the bearing - so it makes it much easier to to clean the shafts as much as possible of rust before doing that. Cheers, Craig

    25:50 Your earth chassis connection is not good. You need to use a split washer above the cable end (to keep pressure always) and a star washer below, for a good electrical connection, Scrape the paint around the screw until you see metal. The way you have it, vibrations will make it get loose over time.
    Loved the video, hope you get another 30 years of use of this grinder!

    I have to recommend getting the proper tool for certain tasks. Snap ring pliers, jaw pullers, manual impact driver, sandblaster, soft jaws for the vice, a way to mount and hold spinning items for sanding, etc. I only say this because naming your channel "the restoration guy" would imply some level of expertise or professionalism, but there were a lot of shortcuts and questionable methods used in this video.

    • @TheRestorationGuy
      @TheRestorationGuy  4 роки тому +4

      I cannot contradict that I am really not fully professional equipped . But I'm trying to change that for future projects. Because of my name, which is really funny, I thought it sounded more like an amateur than a professional . Thank you for your recommendations. I really appreciate that you take the trouble to list everything that needs improvement.

    • @ixamraxi
      @ixamraxi 4 роки тому

      @@TheRestorationGuy No problem, no one has all the tools right away when they first start out. ( I didn't know how new you were at this)
      With respect to the name, i think using "the" in front is what implies some measure of authority, as it implies you've been doing this a long time and have established a reputation as being "the restoration guy".
      The list I gave is by no means exhaustive, its just the tools that would have made this particular restoration much easier on you, and more professional.
      Since its ultimately a tool for personal use, its not that big a deal really, but if you were doing the restoration for a customer...
      It could be worthwhile to have a short disclaimer at the beginning of your video, or in the video description at least, explaining that you are still a novice at some of this, or at least not a professional restoration expert, so they aren't expecting more than you can give, while you are learning the craft.
      Thank you for taking the recommendation in stride, with humility and grace. You get a thumbs up from me. Cheers!

    Subbing. There are a few things that I didn't enjoy and I leave here for you to consider: Using the vice to secure the screw, without any protection to not damage the treads. Not using a proper tool to remove the circlip and finally, the type of paint. If you had used hammerite metal paint the end result would have been awesome. And I guess you know this, you really need a sandblaster, even if just because of the mesmerizing effect that it makes when people watch something being sandblasted. :)

    Toda mi admiración para ustedes, es un trabajo magnífico.
    Salvo por un detalle, que si me permiten, creo que se puede modificar en el futuro.
    En esta máquina los rodamientos funcionan con el aro interior girando con el eje, por tanto llevan un ajuste más apretado entre el eje y el rodamiento.
    Que entre el alojamiento o carcasa y el aro exterior del rodamiento, donde ambas partes, aro exterior de rodamiento y carcasa permanecen estacionarias y por lo tanto llevan un ajuste más holgado.
    Así que idealmente primero se colocan los rodamientos sobre el eje, impulsados únicamente sobre su aro interior, que en esa medida de eje, llevará un ajuste ISO js6 es decir -0,004 mm y +0,009 mm sobre la medida nominal.
    De otra manera se pueden dañar prematuramente los rodamientos por transmitir impactos a través de los elementos rodantes y los caminos de rodadura de ambos aros.
    Por lo demás me ha fascinado el empeño puesto en el proyecto.
    Muchas felicidades ¡¡¡

    ~25:50. Please crimp a collar on the cable so it can not slip out through the case/base grommet.
    Even a knot in the cord or some turns of tape.
    This will prevent straining the electrical connections and pulling them out, as you had with the switch terminal.

      I think the color balance was off in the camera and most likely led lights for lighting which always throws colors off. If you notice when he first starts a new shot or new angle the color goes from a brighter green to that drab pukey color. I think the real life color is that brighter green. I agree tho the original hammered green should have been used . It was a really nice color

    Looks great, first video of yours I’ve watched, the fact that it was done with minimal tools gives me hope. I am wanting to start refurbishing power equipment and have been collecting tools and equipment, I think I’m ready, though I still want a powder coating system and a lathe. Maybe I’ll start with my 3 phase 440v grinder, it could use some tlc

      The Restoration Guy I’ve been refurbishing boats for a while but that is expensive and extremely time consuming, I’ve restored cars, houses, I got into upholstery simply because I enjoy making old ratty things look new again. But my biggest attraction to restoration and repair is that I’m sick of this throw away lifestyle we have. Even though I own a lot of Chinese junk myself I hate that that is what passes for consumer quality goods. I may not be able to change the world but I can save some of the great products of the past from the scrap yard.

    The reason you had a hard time removing the last screw was because you removed all the other screws first and the last screw was now holding all the stress. Slightly loosen all the screws first before you start removing any of them out. You do great work!

    You might want to try a slightly higher Mfd run cap, that was very slow to start...almost didn't, I'd say try going with a 15 and if that's not enough go for a 20uf, toss an ampmeter on it to make sure its not over amping when it does get up to speed.

    Enjoy all your videos, but on this one, I caught myself wincing a few times. First, when you removed the paint from the inside of the grinder; second when you began using filler on that amazing texture on the surface; third when you selected a colour other than original (which was so great). Like I said, great videos, but my 2 cents on these few details. Keep up the great work.

    • @TheRestorationGuy
      @TheRestorationGuy  4 роки тому

      Good to hear. Most people don't like the paintwork. The problem is that hammerite doesn't have the largest selection. I thought the vintage green would fit well and of course I have to prime for the spray paint. But thanks for your criticism, I probably have to stick to the original color more in the future.

    Very nice work. I see that you are missing some tools, such as pliers circlips, but the handy can handle. I'd rather replace all the lugs on the cables and use a faston connector on the capacitor, but those are the details. It is more important for me to leave the grounding cable the longest so that the last one torn out in an accident. It is safer.
    Remember that 3x380V (400) has a much higher power, but 1x 220V (230) + capacitor is enough for this use.
