    4:50-5:35 YES! That collection is the absolute top in all of perfumery. I wish M. Wasser would come up with something comparable to those in our time. I believe that he could. I believe he has that much talent. And he could get a little help from his friend and mentor, the Great M. Jean-Paul Guerlain while the world still has him.
    Great discussion here.

    Well done. The reference to music is spot on. To me, the Chanel works are like Baroque chamber music whereas Malle is more symphonic Romantic Period. Each equally capable of stirring the soul.

    Thanks Eugene. This is a review that I was hoping for since a long time, and others for sure as well. Chanel is the refined, more subtile variant to Malle. Sycamore is the one and only I own from the Les Exclusifs, but I had smelled others. Sycamore smells nothing like vetiver to me, I stick to my perception of wild berries haha

    Malle for me. I love and own some Exclusifs (Boy, Cuir de Russie, Sycomore) and haven't smelled them all in detail (neither all Malle, the Désert line i didn't touch so far), but i get just more excitement smelling them. Especially the calmer fragrances are a joy, pure art. The Chanel ones i love i have, but more Malle fragrances touch me. It is the house i own most fragrances of.
    It was me with the question btw, he tore it apart at the start 😂 But you can only post a sentence without really elaborating. I wanted to write a paragraph. Interesting that he wants to expand and leave the 'niche', really curious to see how this will go.
    I always knew he has some respect for CdG, i like quite a few of them as well

    • @usmellsgood
      @usmellsgood  4 роки тому

      What question did you ask?
      He had an odd explanation for his brand being attached to the "Niche" label. like he was offended it wasn't considered luxury.

    • @tombarsens1277
      @tombarsens1277 4 роки тому +1

      @@usmellsgood What other niche brands he liked was what i typed in. I obviously meant outside of EDPFM, but the other and niche irritated him. I wanted to see what brands in the niche category he liked (or niche luxury for that matter). I knew he liked the Chanel and hermes luxury designer ones, SL and old Dior or Guerlain obviously. Classic Dior, SL, Hermessence and some Guerlain he mentions in every other interview.
      Yeah he doesn't think they are niche, which is true probably. Niche nowadays is not what it was a decade ago. They are selling quite a lot i guess for a 'niche' house. He has a different perception about his brand and the industry than folks outside of it do, that is why i love to listen to him and learn.

    • @usmellsgood
      @usmellsgood  4 роки тому

      @@tombarsens1277 To be fair it's all just a label that doesn't hold much bearing, he could classify his brand as bathtub indie and it'd make no difference to me. He's to classy to verbally trash a brand but his body language says a lot and i wonder if he's disgusted of other "Niche" brands as Tom Ford, Le Labo and Kilian and doesn't want to be classified alongside them?

    • @tombarsens1277
      @tombarsens1277 4 роки тому +1

      @@usmellsgood Not sure about that, i read an interview a few years back where he said something along the lines of liking what Le Labo do with some fragrances and some Tom Ford Private line fragrances are really good, even if they are loud. Maybe he changed his opinion on them, because Tom Ford for sure isn't what it used to be a decade ago. I am pretty sure he hates Kilian for being more packaging than juice and Roja for copying or getting inspired by.
      He thinks his brand is luxury and excellent, better than anything out there, which they are for a lot of people to be fair (to me as well, priced pretty fairly as well, the regular line at least). We obviously say niche and designer to make it easier, otherwise where does luxury start exactly in the fragrance brands not having a regular line.

    The Moon and Cuir de Russie, I cannot compare them, both great but The Moon is better imo. I agree with you on other comparions, if we compare the patchouli ones, I think monsieur is better than coromandel. and Malle's Carnal Flower and Lys Mediterranee are better floral fragrances than Chanel's floral ones. Chanel has to make good rose dominant fragrance in order to compete with Portrait of a Lady. When we look at green fragrances, I cannot choose between Geranium Pour Monsieur, No 19 and Bel Respiro, they all amazing.

    • @usmellsgood
      @usmellsgood  4 роки тому +1

      I strongly disagree on both accounts of The Moon and Monsieur, both rely on heavy overbearing sweetness, Monsieur hammers you over the head with a 750ml Captain Morgan bottle of rum.
      Carnal Flower and Lys are great but also more safe than the true masterpiece Une Fleur de Cassie and yes, Chanel doesn't have a proper rose in the Exclusifs

    I theorize that the reason why Chanel Les Exclusifs is such a strong range vs. malle is the story telling and use of certain ingredients consistent across the collection. Malle publishes independent perfumers - their story is a haiku while Chanel LE is a on-going story. I also believe that Malle’s approach is very ingredient based while Chanel is more Chanel’s heritage leaning. Malle can never get inspired from a vacation home like Bel respiro, a Friend-muse Misia or a lover Boy

    • @usmellsgood
      @usmellsgood  4 роки тому +2

      Good points and ill also add that as artists, Malles canvass is more colourful but less depth within those colours whilst the Chanel canvass would appear more pale but way more paint and complexity on an equivalent sized canvass

    This was a very nice and unexpected comparison. Two great brands. If you'd make me choose I'd go with Chanel. Though it would be so hard to pick between Vetiver Extraordinaire and Sycomore 'cause they are very different. Yet, can't beat Sycomore...

    After listening to Eugene, I bought samples of Malle and Chanel. Tried many of them. I can respect both of them, Malle is really artistic, but I don't see myself wearing it on a regular basis, Chanel is very refined and complex, real pure class, but wAAAAAy too feminine for me. I than went and tried Guerlain, and many of thew were instant hits.

    Love this video!!!
    But to add my two cents, why haven‘t Thierry Wasser stayed true to the houses tradition, with their absolutes line in ur point of view? Shalimar was also a french vision on eastern perfumery. Thierry Wasser is a master in blending precious Materials in the Art and Metiers line and he is on an unpaired level of craftmanship. In his interviews someone can see how much Mr. Wasser love the Materials like Ambergris. Guerlain still is producing the best vanillas in the market. Furthermore with Thierry Wasser as Guerlains head perfumeur there were released masterpieces like Songe d un Bois de ete... and Frenchy!, which seems to be truely french in it‘s style and modern Time classics.
    Nevertheless I love the three traditional Maisons Chanel, Hermes, Guerlain equally and Frederic Malles concept is genius.

    Great comparison. I have almost all Chanels and FM'S.Chanel is more wearable and pleasing to general public.This is what I feel. FM is little more defined, bold and more assertive. I tried to get into Chanel world many times (and still want to) but failed. But can’t get out of FM house, and hope I never have to. Maybe prolly because as a guy, FM scents smell more unisex/androgynous to my nose, to the point that it begins to feel gender-fluid/free-as it (might) should. I hardly have any problem with using FM loud & floral scents, always feel so at ease with it. That wasn’t my experience with Chanel somehow.

(and to some extent L'Eau d'Hiver and Lys Mediterrane) really impressed me, and I in general dislike the 'texture' of Malle fragrances - they all appear to me like an olfactory version of colored 'blobs' in a lava lamp, and remind me outdated retrofuturistic industrial design from France and Italy.
