    You’re one of my fave “reviewers”. I find this to be your most complex and nebulous insight, in that I think you’re ambivalent and unsure of this scent… it’s really interesting to explore idiosyncrasies, personally I find French Lover to be dark and hostile, but Monsieur is an approachable walk in the park. I happen to love both!

      I also love your depictions of “colours”… I don’t see the world that way, so I’m envious haha 😸

    Bought this for my husband. He is 70, I am 72. I personally love the leather notes. He always likes fragrances I pick, two themes, either woody or interesting citrus, vetiver as an element a plus. Got it at an Estée Lauder warehouse sale for about 187 bucks. What’s not to like?

    Eugen, I know it’s been 4 yrs since you posted this but I have to comment. I’ve been watching you for ages but needed to comment here. Man I wish we were neighbors so we could have joint impression discussions, bc every word you spoke from the colors to the textures to the “feel” and of course scent impressions was like you downloaded my thoughts and said them yourself.
    And then when you spoke about Portrait of a Lady, too, with colors etc and “seeing” scents in your imagination (and being mystified by comments comparing or paralleling POAL and Monsieur, as I am haha)… I was gobsmacked. Looking forward to watching more! I’m not kidding, I’d be game to come up with a joint perfume list and do a color impression comparison. I’d be so curious how many we’d agree on. I’m betting several.

    I hated Monsieur at first. I thought it was scratchy, rough and brash but I kept your sample on my desk because I knew you liked it and I wanted to see what you saw in it. And the wonderful thing about Frederic Malle fragrances is the more you smell them they start showing different sides, on my skin the all those rough textures go away and it becomes a smooth woody, boozy scent. While I don't see myself buying a bottle YET I've definitely come to appreciate it.

    I have a sample of it. I am not the biggest fan of Patchouli, so this one wasn't for me initially. Now i kind of like it. Not enough to buy a bottle at the moment, but who knows in the future.
    I get the grey association. This is a bit of a weird one to me, it smells thick but light, i smell some clean and earthy nuances from the Patch, but also some heavy and dark notes. I get what you mean with black, but to me it would be much more greyish, with some green and black spots. Definitely more dress up, for the mature and serious gentleman.

    I love this. It's boldness. I agree with the grey connotations. Not black. To me it's dark rusty orange, brown and greys in a dark shadow. Its dark but something is keeping me from seeing complete blackness. And the more I wear and smell it. The lighter it gets, the colours start to come out. This is divisive, but I think that's a good thing. Love for me. No other perfume in my collection captures the mood or feeling of this perfume. It knows what it wants to do and doesn't care if you love it or not. Monsieur IS just Monsieur.

    To me it smells like a daddy who abstains from all of his desires not because he’s devoid of them but he just does it because he is disciplined. It’s so dark and so cool, he is so untouchable. But to others it smells like “serial adulterer😂” I don’t know … it’s just sooooo cool. I’m a girl and I think it smells so good on me. ❤

    I agree with the blackness. After spraying it almost had a black sesame and plasticky scent which lasted about an hour and after that, it settled in and I loved it. I was obsessed with Musc Ravageur but I think this one is more complex and masculine without being overtly sexual. It is very mature and is nice and powdery.

    • @2silkworm
      @2silkworm Рік тому

      It's very unique. I don't know any perfumes that do the same thing. Black Afgano is totally different. Monsieur doesn't have any sweetness in it. It's bolder, stricter and darker. It's oily and dry. There's no others like that.

    Some days I love Monsieur and almost buy a bottle, other days I find it headache inducing. I really love the patchouli in it though. Patchoulis of all stripes are great to me, sometimes I like a sloppy textured patchouli, other days I like it really smoothed out like it is here. Not sure what it is that's cranked up too loud for me, maybe the synthetics you mentioned?

    Wore this today. While I get the parallel to Patchouli 24, from my collection I feel this falls right between Mortal Skin and Black Afgano, although maybe beastlier than both. Summer is early over here though, so I don’t think I’ll get to revisit it anytime soon.

    I find this one a bit hard to wear (I have a 10 ml). I'd say it's mature leaning, but not in the direction of classical masculins. Perhaps a masculin counterpart to Coromandel. I don't get any rum, just a dry smoky patchouli. I get dark brown, but not black - probably due to it being pathcouli-dominant, and I always associate these with brown.

    There must be something wrong with my nose. I purchased a small sample of Monsieur on Ebay. When it came I sprayed one spray on my arm. Oh my Gosh ! ! ! ! It was the worst smelling stuff I've ever smelled (and I have kind of a bird dog nose). To me it smells like a toxic weed killer chemical, perhaps like Roundup herbicide. Does it smell that way to anyone else? I will never spray it on myself again.

    I really love this fragrance and have been working off of a 10ml decant for a while... If there ever was a fragrance from the Frederic Malle house that I would purchase a full bottle of it would be this masterpiece... I do not get the amount of spice that you seem to get from the fragrance though and it is a very masculine fragrance... Many fragrances that are marketed toward men and/or women are not as clear cut as this one however... My wife wears a lot of my 'for men' fragrances but she would not touch this one as she says it smell like a man... People may not want to think fragrance has a gender because of all this progressive fantasy/feelings garbage going on now days but when you get a whiff of this one your brain will conjure masculine images so yes like it or not scent has a gender... Sure anyone can wear whatever they want and a woman can wear it too but if I passed by her on the street it would confuse the hell out of me.. ^_^ It is a VERY manly scent and yeah the more I think about it the more I am coming to the realization that this will be my first bottle purchase from the house once my decant is gone... Great review as always...
