“Let it snow, I thread a whole cyclone eye in no time” Goddamn the way this man writes is so amazing. The whole song is great but those last two minutes are the highlight if the whole album. Glad you appreciate the tapestry this dude can weave! I know I said it on another Aesop vid of yours, but for real, “Big Bang” is a classic of his and only a handful of people have reactions to it on youtube. I promise the Aesop fan base would appreciate it as much as you’ll hopefully enjoy it
I remember the first time I heard this song and the beat drop and last verse and fking insane. The more you listen to it the better it gets. Which is crazy in it's self.
Black snow is many things: It's the effects of Global warming, and environmental damage, where the snow is turning due to pollution raining back down on it. It's also the classic fight of Man vs Nature, and man vs life. The opening verses are psyching himself up for the fight, Talking about the realities of what's going on, and the things you can do to alleviate the anxieties, and keep moving through life. "Talk to your plants, Tell em something bad from the vaults" "Throw a couple punches in the mirror" "Throw your fucken baba on the floor, Stomp around the room like a child." Are different reactions you can have to dealing with stress and also the things you have no true control over. The second vs is Aes basically going "No matter what comes, i'm gonna go down fighting." Black snow is a notable threat, But Aes is going to keep doing what he's doing "Setting up a solo event" and use his actions to avoid and dismiss the anxieties of the world that are closing in on him like a storm, Even telling life to bring it on "While i'm humming let it snow, Let it snow, i'll thread a whole cyclone" Is Aes saying he'll make it through the eye of the storm and come out dry on the other side. Stepping in the arena with 101 Apes is referencing all the other people of the world who are in the same fight. some falling prone to black snow, some ushering in it's arrival. "I gotta nother ball of snakes on the schedule." Aes has more important things to do than worrying what he can't fight, and he's going to focus on doing what he can do. "THE FORCAST.. AIN'T RIGHT!" harkens back to his song on the album "Infinity Fill Goose Down." with the line " 'Detective on some how you get so mega extra ultra?' I said 'Never check the weather and always dress for the tundra'"
I think "Black Snow" is his concept of life's struggles. The first part is so repetitive, like how some times life just never seems to let up. Then the second verse after this very drastic tone change in the singing part is like someone said earlier, he's fighting. I remember mentioning that the whole black snow thing is probably related to the pepper moth in London. They were super easy to hunt in white snow by bird and stuff since they were so visible and the white variety thrived. When factories pretty much coated the area in coal ash and literally turn the snow black, the pepper moth thrived instead and the white moth population tanked. The singing part even says, fall back and wave your hand and legs around, (snow) angels look different. Because everything is black/grey. So I think the whole song is about how life was always tough for him. But these days life is just tough in general especially for those who didn't have to struggle the way he did. But since he's so used to it, and not foreign to this struggle dance, he knows how to roll with it. And he's realized that he's down to fight and tell life, keep that shit coming. Let it snow.
What I picked up was the downward spiral of depression in the first verses and like trying tricks to keep sane and function. Last verse is the like fight out at the end of that season. Telling death he's not ready and describing his battle.
Black snow is depression. It all good in the beginning and it casually gets worse. Then the end it’s him fighting his depression (black snow) while humming let it snow
Nice to see you again! The five-beat-on-one-beat-off cadence to open this track is a neat experimental flow. Completely understandable rhythm and so out of left field to expectations. Always remember this about Aesop. He’s got layers, for sure, but it’s more rewarding to picture the scene he’s setting. The shades of nuance in his wording could win a visual award if some one were brave enough to set it to canvas.

Probably my favorite track on ITS. You feel the mental deterioration as it progresses. Top tier stuff, dude 👊
Aesop Rock is the best, nice!

Gotta do Water Tower or TUFF
Best beat breakdown I’ve heard in 20 years!!!
Easily one of his best tracks. The last verse, with the beat change... So good.
Shoutout to the Aesop Rock Facebook group! 🤘
Ayyyeee!!!
Aes just reminding everyone who the 🤬 he is. That second verse is solidly in the top 5, probably even Top 3 for me.
