    What makes a control decks like Counter Angel fun is the skillful interactions that lead to the late game wins. When I play Counter Angel I'm not trying to just kill my opponent, but rather just control the game by disrupting my opponent's game plan. That disruption part is where the fun is because if you can do it, that'll further your strategy leading to oftentimes complex games where you basically have to know your opponent's deck practically better than they do.

    • @mauer1

      the problem is as he said, that when you only have counter traps like solemn strike in the backrow you cant strategically disrupt your opponent. you either negate every possible play he makes, or he will generate so much value that your monster gets overwhelmed.

    • @Innerhype
      @Innerhype 6 місяців тому +2

      @@mauer1 If all of your backrow cards are just counter traps, you have the ability to simply negate everything they do which at that point you've won anyways, but odds are you'll often just have 1 or 2. So the part I find fun are knowing which cards your opponent is using as bait and which cards I absolutely have to negate to stop their 11-card combo this turn. That is the strategy of Counter Angel.

    • @mauer1
      @mauer1 6 місяців тому +2

      @@Innerhype yeah but most modern decks don't have such simple choke points anymore.

    Thank you for the vid, i liked counterfairies
    The list is quite simple actually:
    1. Starter; a summon that sets counter trap if sanctuary is up
    2. Draw power, shuffle a combination of fairy+counter or draw more per set S/T if sanctuary is up etc.
    3. Floodgate; if any of both SS the opposite gets to set a countertrap if sanctuary is up then draw
    4. Utility, a makyura like effect to activate only countertrap from the hand with extra cost of discarding.
    5. Alternative boss, summonable for free with condition of 3 successful negate with tribute cost. Generic
    6. More recoveries, a simple SS from gy if negate or send a set card to SS etc.
    7. Boss. Actual extra dex boss that has omninegate, protects sanctuary and fills fuels more countertraps
    Hope future support can at least provide these

    Idea for a Counter Fairy that “shapeshifts” while on the field or in the GY each time a Counter Trap is used:
    _Charcoal Changeling_ (FIRE)
    Level 1
    Fairy/Effect
    _While this card is face-up on the field or in the GY, each time a Counter Trap is activated (Quick Effect), you can banish up to 6 other monsters from your hand, field and/or GY; While this card is on the field or in the GY, this card’s name, attribute(s), type, effect, ATK and/or DEF are changed to any of those monster’s._
    ATK/? DEF/200
    So basically, you can Min-Max this card by taking the best combination of qualities from your other monsters and make it into one monster.

    I'd add cards that'd have additional effects based on what was negated, or if Sanc in the Sky was on the field.
    Something like "Discard 1 card, negate the activation/effect of a card and destroy it. If Sanctuary in the Sky is on the field, search your deck for a card that mentions Sanctuary in the Sky and add it to your hand".
    Or something like "Negate the activation/effect of card your opponent controls, then apply the following effect based on what was negated.
    Monster - Return the negated card to the deck
    Spell - Your opponent can't activate cards with the same name for the rest of the turn
    Trap - Inflict 1500 damage to your opponent"

    the issue with them is that they are too defensive, turn 1 they are great but turn 2 against an established board, your counter traps are worthless. you need to go first and draw well, and even then the good counter traps go minus anyways, so at best you go even. unless you have the new pendulum card ofc, but back in the day when there were no pendulums, they were even more unplayable. you basically have to go first and open exodia to even have a chance at winning.

      in some cases the mechanic/deck is just doomed from the start because either it doesnt have any direction it canbe deisnged in, ors it presents a mechanic that is outright toxic tothe game and shouldnt be allowed ot become a deck.
      in their Credit Konami does try to make said deck usable, but often they have ot overtune cards into uselessness....stillbetter than the flip side of making cards that have no business being generic(like anaconda and the sprite Extra deck)

It's more a will to propose original tactics. Not every strategy are made to be top tiers meta, but just to propose fun alternative to play the game, and that kind of thing is needed to make the game refreshing.

      they are a primarly LIGHT Fairy Deck, worse, they are a control deck that can loop its monsters, which puts right in the sights of the Herald Strategy(and generic ritual support meant ot fill your hand with fairies)

    I've been playing Counter Fairies since they were reprinted in Dark Legends, which is quite some time. It's my favorite deck and one I've tried to keep current over the years.
    To be honest, in order to keep up with the current meta it would need some archetype specific Counter Traps that could be used the turn they are set (as long as you have a Counter Fairy/Sanctuary in the Sky on the field). Traps are inherently slow and considered bad by the majority of the player base. Being able to use them on the first turn for an archetype centered around them is what it needs to compete

    I can understand why Counter Fairies can't be good. Counters Fairies are designed to work with any Counter Trap card, and there's a reason there aren't generic Counter Trap searchers. Yugioh's already a game where going second without a dedicated going second deck means you probably lose. Hyper consistent Counter Fairies would mean you better open with three Red Reboots if you went second.

    I remember designing a boss monster for Counter Fairies with an effect that was broken, yet creative. It was one you reviewed quite some time ago.
    Zeragantz, the Hand of Retribution
    You may Special Summon this card (from your hand) by sending 3 Counter Traps with different names from your deck to the GY. Your opponent pays any costs you would normally pay to activate counter traps (this is not optional). If "The Sanctuary in the Sky" is on the field, any counter traps you control that successfully activate and resolve are set instead of being removed from the field.
    Because the cost portion isn't optional, you can't activate a counter trap if your opponent can't pay the cost. And due to the rule that a Trap card can't be activated the turn it's set, you'd want a variety of counter traps on your field that could each only be activated once per turn.
    Perhaps a card like this with a few balance adjustments and some extenders would make Counter Fairy decks a much more playable

    The biggest problem is that at the time Counter Fairies became a thing, the only worthwhile non-sidedeck Counter Trap was Solemn Judgment. In order to make Counterfairies work, you had to either run sidedeck Counter Traps in your main deck like Pulling the Rug, or you had to run sub-optimal cards like Drastic Drop Off. By the time better Counter Traps came out, they hadn't updated the Fairy part, so it had completely fallen off already.
    The bizarre thing to me is how they combined it with banish support, most notably layard but in the same pack as Layard was also Miraculous Descent to give an example. Why hadn't they made a Counter Trap that works by banishing Fairies from the GY? Something like a Dark Bribe that requires you to banish 2 Fairies instead of make your opponent draw (and some restriction that the banished Fairies are unaffected by card effects that turn, to prevent immediate recursion from an already face-up Layard). That would have done an amazing job in stitching the deck together.

    Nowadays you can use celestial transformation to trigger Ariadne. Set it on your turn then use it to summon Ariadne on the opponent's turn and it's either slain in battle or is destroyed(explodes) by the effect of transformation, triggering Ariadne's searching effect. This is even faster if you run 2 Celestial transformation and 3 Guiding Ariadne. As you can effectively pick and choose when and which counter trap you add to your hand. Ariadne also doesn't have a name limitation (i.e. 'with different names' in her text box) to her search, so you can reveal 3 copies of the same counter trap forcing the opponent to add a specific card that you need(I.e a solemn card). Pretty spiffy effect both in and out of a fairy type deck. For example you could in a current modern(at time of commenting)format create a hybrid between fairies and labrynth which would have by design, chaos synergy capability meaning you can add any of chaos dragon levianeer, B.L.S- envoy of the beginning, chaos sorcerer and even Chaos Hunter to ruin your opponent's day.(Chaos hunter especially with current meta loving banishment effects. So turning that off on a body stronger than most common monsters is a great choice to control the duel field.) You could also consider cards like Darklord Nurse Reficule if running cards like soul taker to pop an opponent's monster and deal 1000 damage.(Nurse Reficule converts gaining 1000 LP into taking effect damage equal to the gain.) an Axe Of Despair to back up a Chaos package is also a good idea(Chaos Hunter at 3500 Atk would beat over most troublesome monsters for example.)

    Counter Fairies was my 3rd deck in Master Duel. I'd use Agent of Venus to turbo out Link Airknight with Shine Balls to search Fallen Sanctuary (a Sanctuary in the Sky that places a trap that mentions it on activation, and can 1/turn banish a Fairy from GY to target negate a monster). Then, if I could get off Airknight's summon from hand effect, I'd put down a Counter Fairy and link off my last Shine Ball with Airknight for either Avramax or Unchained Abomination. It made for a pretty decent board and I had a lot of fun with it for a while. Also, Ties of the Brethren really helps to turbo out some of the other Counter Fairies so no matter which you start with, you can end with at least Meltiel and Artemis.

    I ran this type of deck back when i played as a sorta salvage deck. i was building a deck around cyber stein and built a life gain deck which included a lot of fairys and counter traps. My brillient idea was to summon things like blue eyes ultimate dragon and steamroll. Cyber stein was banned 2 before i got his card in the mail and i did not know til i tried playing the deck. With him gone the deck was gutted and another played traded my Agents saturn and Mars which i rebuilt the deck around. (been a very long time since i played} basicly the deck would lock down the field til i had enough LP to one shot with saturn or mars
    I played in 1 turnament and got paied against a Amazoness deck focused on locking down the field. we locked things down to the point where we ended out first match (best of 3} as everyone else was finishing their last match, i wanna say we took almost 40 minutes. we were forced to pitch cards to the gy from our hands because nether of us could unlock the field. I eventually did win but as thats the only match i recall from that night im guessing i got slaughtered like the cute baby seal i was lol Their cards in this video i would have loved for the deck but never knew existed. I added uraya (the dragon you summon by tributing 3 counter traps) just to get me out of my own field locks after that.
    Only now a days did i ever really understand how unviable my deck was. Sadly only so much cash and i could not run yu gi oh and magic and went magic.

    If I was asked to design support for this deck to make it playable, I'd give it these cards:
    - Their own dedicated counter trap, an omni-negate that requires you to banish a fairy from your hand/field/gy and is playable from your hand if you control the Sanctuary.
    - A field spell that swarms your field with fairies, gains you advantage each time you activate a counter trap, and substitutes itself for the Sanctuary.
    - An easy to summon boss monster that uses counter traps from your hand/field/gy as shields to protect itself, and allows you to activate one of them by banishing it on a hard opt while you control the Sanctuary, also can float into any Parshath monster from the deck.

It can pop off hard when you get the engine rolling but even if you are lucky enough to go first and set up artemis or the pend scale with 2 counter traps, some of them will just not come up right away. Like you could have 2x divine wrath vs your opponent's harpies or 2x judgement and the huge revolution is over vs an opponent's activated hand summon effect like longyun (which you cant judgement). If a counter trap is activated while you control this card add a fairy from deck to hand. If a fairy is normal or special summoned while you control this card add a counter trap to hand. If this card is sent to the GY you can target 1 counter trap in your GY set it to your side of the field. You can only use each effect of "When The Artemis is Bountiful" thrice per turn.

  • @Silyon487
    @Silyon487 6 місяців тому +1

    I think this is the first of the "failed archetypes" series I kind of disagree with. Counter Fairies can be annoying as hell and a solid anti-meta pick, so long as it's a format in which cards like the Solemns and Red Reboot are useful. Bonus points for being able to natively slap in Archlord Krystra as a floodgate/boss monster without jumping through hoops. The only reason it doesn't see play right now is because of how insanely recursive the last few formats have been, between Tear and Snake-Eyes. One-time negates like the Solemns haven't been good, but that doesn't mean they won't become good again next time the meta shifts.
    Though, I suppose the archetype directly competes with Labrynth now. Nothing competes with Lab for control strats.

    • @basty_gaming5750
      @basty_gaming5750 6 місяців тому

      Unless they could search counter traps in the entire game, then Lab might be a joke

    • @Silyon487
      @Silyon487 6 місяців тому +1

      @@basty_gaming5750 Nah, it's not the searching they need. IN addition to the Solemn brigade they can make use of Divine Punishment (omni-negate that needs Sanctuary to activate) and Divine Wrath (Trap version of Orange Light), not to mention the ever-popular Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell. You don't need that much searching when you're running that many stun options, what you need is ways to recycle them.
      That's what Lab does. The pop effects Lab uses are honestly kinda weak, but they can do them all day without regard for strategy or conservation. Counter Fairies doing the same thing would be absolutely miserable to play against. A deck that would be miserable to play against cannot be called "failed", unless we're talking in terms of game balance.

  • @mr.thekid3827
    @mr.thekid3827 6 місяців тому

    Honestly they only really need to give Counter Fairies like, 3 good cards for them to work, even without being an archetype
    They need a counter-trap that searches a light fairy on resolution, but can only be activated if Sanctuary in the Sky is on board, a fairy that discards itself to add a Sanctuary in the Sky or a Counter Trap to the hand, and a boss that can be summoned in a similar way to the usual suspects, or another synchro Parshath, that lets you set a different named counter trap based on what you negated- if you negated a monster, set a horn, if you negated a spell, set, I dunno, something else, MAYBE a dark bribe or just a non-solemn, non-horn counter-trap, I dunno. But, if you somehow negated a trap, set a Solemn. They can't be activated the same turn, that way you set up plays, and DO actually have to kinda plan ahead.
    Do you use the discard fairy to add the sanctuary? Or do you add the counter-trap that summons Parshath? Do you run 3 copies of the trap that NEEDS Sanctuary, but gives card advantage, or do you keep it low so you don't brick as often? And since decks can play through a negate or two now-a-days, the new boss would also make you want to at least SOMEWHAT be careful what you negate- would a black horn of heaven be a good call to set for a following turn? Or would you want to save at least one negate to keep for a potential opponent's trap, so you can search out the all powerful solemn as a part of your own advantage? The only issue with all of this, is that there would be like, NO space in the backrow, ever. You have Ariadne in a pend zone, the parshath sanctuary in another, and only 3 spaces for counter traps, which since that's all you'll be working with that turn COULD mean ya don't have enough.
    I think it's a really unique IDEA for a deck, takes something powerful and generic, and turns it into a full gameplan, but, without more UNIQUE interactive pieces, and cards that aren't as intentionally limiting, it's too slow, and doesn't play nice with how modern yugioh works.
    If they were to be an entire Archetype, it's hard to say if you'd call them the Guiding or the Bountiful archetype, but to be honest, you could just say "Light Fairy that mentions counter traps" as the archetype's monster search, and then have a specific set of counter traps that all share a name, something like "Light Force" or "Angel Trap". I don't wanna actually put 'Counter' in the name, because Battlin' Boxers have a monster that can search "counter" counter traps, and even if it wouldn't work very well, it's still something to keep in mind as possible.
    Honestly a smaller idea I couldn't really fit into either of the others is a retrain of Guiding Ariadne, like, "Ariadne, The Guiding Light" or something. That could, instead of being a pendulum monster, could do something like Lord of the Heavenly Prison, maybe on an activation requirement instead of just for free though. Like if you activate a Counter Trap, reveal it, and then for the rest of the turn you don't have to pay the costs. That way you still have to pay the first traps' cost, but it stays in hand, so it's hard to interact with, and can be re-used theoretically infinitely.
    Or, they could just make a Sanctuary that lets you activate counter-traps from hand.
    Not cool or fun but, unique at least.
