I'm looking forward to this one. My Midwestern town (about 58,000 people, 12 square miles) has 51 parks scattered throughout the neighborhoods. Some aren't much larger than half a block of greenspace, but even those provide a third place for people to hang out.

Really looking forward to this one. I think this as I bike by houses in Hollywood with big yardss and think how they're fake parks that they don't have to share with others.

I walk my dog to the park every night. I have met over 50 neighbors this way and made 10 friends. If you are lonely, my advice is to get outside, and parks are my favorite place to be outside.

Your 5 month old was adorable and stole the show 😂. I really love the thought of parks as third places, and I'd completely agree from our experience! Our park is about 15 minutes away on foot/ much less by bike and it's become central to our kids connecting with other kids. They form games together, and just generally live meeting new people and seeing neighbors. I also enjoy randomly saying people I know there, it's so much less stress to happen upon each other at the park than to try and schedule some specific time for us all to meet :-)

Your site is urbanist, but the topics around parks & getting away from home are rural too. For example, I noticed when camping at parks all over the country that many of the other campers were from such rural settings that they used camping as a way to gain MORE time with other people, rather than LESS than us from the city. Indeed, as you drive rurally, just notice how many rural homes have an RV or camping trailer parked off to the side.

Indianapolis struggles a LOT with safe bike infrastructure, but the park and connecting greenway system is world class. There are greenways along the White River, Pogue's Run, Pleasant Run, Fall Creek, and Eagle Creek that connect folks to some of the best parks in the city.

Weirdly, the Trust for Public Land didn’t rank Indianapolis, so I couldn’t really include it within my assessment. I have no idea why. They list it, but instead of a ranking it says “n/a.”
But that’s cool to hear! Of course, if it’s not safe to get from your house to the trail it might not actually expand access much.

Love seeing some of my favorite parks in your video.
On thing i have noticed is that Columbus has a lot of postage stamp parks that only serve to inflate the number of parks.

The smaller parks are important too to increase (walking) access for folks in neighborhoods. We love our small park (featured in the video)!

I am glad you people can find each other. I am never happier than when I am alone on my ranch. There is no way I could live in the city again. Being social is drudgery and annoying. I hate small talk. I would never ask anyone for anything other than services I pay people to do. Inevitably, people who are "friends" or "acquaintances", seem to always ask for something even if they just want to waste my time talking. Strong, large, razor wired, electrified fences far away from my house, make good neighbors.

Matt, I really enjoyed your video! We should talk sometime about what’s happening with The Historic Sheep 🐑 Farm Park on W. Case Rd.

Here's something insane. Nebraska hasn't updated its rail charter in 20 years! Every state has to update its rail charter every four years to get funding for rail projects from the federal government. So Nebraska can't get any funding. And there were some legislative bills that would involve rail systems. LB44 would have proposed that Nebraska adopt affordable housing policies and join the Midwest Rail Compact, but despite being endorsed by six legislators, it was not made a priority and must wait until 2024 to even get the possibility of a reading.
There is also LB991 which proposed a high speed commuter rail line between Lincoln and Omaha, but the bill died in the Appropriations Committee. Omaha is also in the process of building a streetcar line, but the project is stalled. Because Nebraska has neither updated its plan nor joined the Compact, it can interfere with states like Iowa or North Dakota that are part of the Compact if their rail networks connect to Nebraska.

Wow. This is frustrating. Sounds like a long road ahead for advocates.

An extension of this, more so on a national level is teens basically being restricted from third places because of a few bad apples. A few malls have implemented chaperone policies-although this is more so seen in amusement parks-and very few inland parks have a pay-per-ride and California's Great America is the only amusement park with a dedicated tram station. Cedar Point does on paper, but the westbound trains have to be running really late and timed properly for the hourly Sandusky Transit bus to downtown but I think the ferry from downtown Sandusky to Cedar Point 5-6 times a day except Saturdays from now till August 18th. Be nice if there was daytime Amtrak service, the STS Purple line ran every 30mins, and extra Cedar Point ferry trips were made (maybe some bypass/terminate at Kelley's Island or are shuttles?)

This is a really interesting point. In a past video, I mentioned that car dependency harms independence for older kids and teens. I hadn’t considered the way third places are restricted for teens. I think that’s makes parks (plus community centers and libraries) even more important for teens.

Right, why is this presented by military person. Seriously, you Americans need to let go of this weapenised stance on social structures.

The Surgeon General isn’t actually a member of the military. It’s a weird situation. Worth reading the wiki page.
