What is the difference between modern liter bikes and an SDR on the race track? Is it a matter of trackability coming out of corners? Or is it a different world with a wind screen and more aggressive riding position?
@ridebecauseucan1944 make sure you put some socks with those flip flops to make sure you have squid grip with your foot sliding around those flip flops
Such a shame that your session was cut early due to the breaks, would have loved to seen a second session with the brakes dialled in/ with a brembo upgrade because damn that bike sounds amazing going around the track
You really should create a leaderboard type thing and discuss the pros and cons of these bikes on track relative to their lap times and competition. Wild that a $25k R1M won’t last a 20min track day session without brake fade. Surely some racier pads and maybe fluid would be all you’d need though.
If your brakes are that bad after that much riding, then something is wrong. I wouldn’t worry about upgrading MCs or anything. I’m pretty sure the R1M already has braided lines. So maybe pads at most. Otherwise I’d just bleed the whole system and make sure pads aren’t dragging or something else is going on.
if it has the same problem as the other R1's/FZ1's/MT-10s it would be due to brake material. The organic pads are garbage and cause major brake fade even on the street. Once you upgrade to non organics the brake problem will basically be solved. Its the first go to mod for the above mentioned.
R1 has braided lines in the front I know that cause I’ve swapped them onto my mt10. And the factory brakes are very easy to over work. On factory pads and fluid i use to run out of brakes on lap 2
I would never put a bike on the track without changing pads and lines first. They put long lasting pads on almost every street bike and since you have to put so much pressure on them they make the lines fail. Great video as always 👍
@@IamMotionMedia Could definitely use some better pads on my '21 yz450f. First couple days I rode it, was a few sketchy situations. Found out real fast, that MX33 tires are horrible at oh say 95mph. First time I had to panic stop hard into a switchback, was interesting to say the least.
I've ridden tons of liter bikes that my friends have allowed me to swing a leg over. And the R1 is the one that just felt comfortable and like i could actually use it. For example on a RSV4RR, i loved it, but i definitely could feel that i couldn't make the bike do 50% of what it was capable of. Vs a R1 makes you feel like you can at least pretend to be like Rossi.
cmon yam! Beautiful Bike, Beautiful day on a Beautiful track and the vid is only 13min :( Woulda loved to just watch that Bike for a little while longer on the track! Everything about that bike is pure bliss!
Hey Yam. Quality content as always 😊. Really enjoy the track sessions. Still hoping for a track review of the BMW S1000xr following your street review some time ago❓
Oh she screams….. she sounds beautiful 👌 regarding the brakes, upgrade the brake fluid to 660 Motul and Vesrah srjl xx pads and it will definitely take that woody feel away. Try this simple mod, trust me I did it to my r1 and it made a huge difference
Those brakes were fading way too fast. Not sure if he went over the bike before putting it on the track but maybe the brakes were dragging or there could have been some air in the system causing the fluid to boil. Im willing to bet the issue can be corrected or improved without changing the master cylinder. Maybe some better pads and high boiling point fluid would do the trick
Love that R1! Guess the Speedometer doesn't show on the video.. Reads all zeros? Seems like it even has a few Revs left on top! Are the exhaust pops normal? Maybe needs a tune with the exhaust? I know Vcyclenut offers the option in his tunes. The brakes/fade.. what do you do? Bigger disks, different pads, Brembo fixes all? Is the MT10 engine just an ECU tune away from R1M power, or a camshaft/mechanical difference?.
Great videos. If you were keeping the bike for yourself, what precise brake upgrades would you do for lines, calipers, master cylinder and brake pads balancing cost and (amateur) track day benefit?
Hey Yams! Not sure if you have one, but have you ever done a track course for beginners? I want to take my Ninja 400 to the track but don't want to go in blind. Thanks! G. O'Yeah
I’m 5’9 and ride a 2017 R1 and a WR450. The WR is more of an issue than the R1 to me. l suggest wearing some good boots or at least be cautious of stopping on uneven roads. Hope you get one!
Papa Yam, here's some question for ya... Do you touch your clutch at all once you're through the pit lane? Does down shifting and braking at the same time makes engine braking? Doesn't braking without clutch puts pressure on your disk pads which ultimately leads to brake fail? Also, here's some criticism, why didn't you tape your lights?
He has a quick shifter so doesn’t need to use the clutch. Breaking will always lead to brake failure at some point, using the clutch makes no difference to the amount of braking done by the front brakes, if anything it would increase. And yes down shifting creates engine breaking, it also puts you in the right gear to pull through the corner
Ever since that 07' R1 that broke valve guides loose brand new, at 5k, 11k, and at 16k miles... sounding literally like a silverware drawer pulled out too far, then dropped to the floor... I had literally hated the brand. Needless to say never again... and I had a 03' GSXR1000 and ZX7 track bike paid for, that I treated much worse.
I dunno if anyone else is able to hear it but with headphones on, I'm hearing crackling as the bike decelerates, is that good/ bad, started hearing it soon after you got anto the track, just sounded a little sketch to me so i thought id flag it
yeah and fairly normal for bikes to pop and crackle on decel especially this bike but can be tuned to be smoother on decel which is usually for track riding but some people like the sound. I mean it’s an R1 with an aftermarket exhaust anyway so it’s gonna pop and crackle and probably shoot flames anyway
It’s the PAIR valves. Installation of block off plates will stop the injection of air into the exhaust. It’s the first mod done after removing the exhaust servo and installing a full exhaust system.
25,000 dollar bike, and the brakes don't work. Maybe if they focused on the basics instead of all that electronic crap they could build a bike that works. When you listed all that electronic crap on that bike it's a total turn off for me. You'd have to give me that bike, because I'd never pay money for it. No excuses for the brakes fading, none, not for 25,000 dollars.

Yes sir. You need softer pads that can dig in better. Once you build that much heat in the rotors, the pads glaze quickly, and...... your done.
oem yamaha pads/brakes are notoriously awful. The r1 needs new pads, master cylinder minimum, race fluid at a minimum.

Isn’t it the same with all Yamahas. I swear you put a video out saying the first mod you do on a Yamaha is aftermarket brakes

track pads and fresh rb5660 brake fluid should solve your issue. the bramble rc master cylinder would def be a welcome upgrade tho

Does the 2024 r1m have brembos now ?

The R1 is the best bike ever made by far, and to those who say other is because they r more concerned with looking good than riding 😂
Ducati has entered the chat :p but Yam is right, for 25k, it's an awesome bike!

Brake fade? May I ask when was the brake fluid last changed?
