- My Ford GT is here at Circuit of the Americas! I've shipped it from the UK to kick start a tour right here at the home of the United States F1, and with the GT1 Sports Club in town, it's the perfect opportunity to get out on track with Hypercar Invitational. What an experience, let's go!
Having visited COTA with my AMG GT Black Series in 2022, it was always a plan to get back here with the GT, however with insane Texas temperatures at play, I knew we would run into some potential for overheating issues, and unfortunately that's exactly what happens. Regardless, it's a truly insane place to be driving and really stretching the legs of a permanent Shmeemobile.
The GT1 Sports Club by Curbstone events run around the GT World Challenge series, and this is the first time out in the US, with the support of Hypercar Invitational and The Exotics Network. In the paddock we're in an extraordinary line-up that also features Fastrrr's new Apollo IE and Pagani Zonda Revolucion, a Koenigsegg Regera, McLaren Senna, Pagani Huayra BC, McLaren P1, two Bugatti Chiron Super Sports and more.
After some fast laps at COTA, the next plan is a parade and photo line-up, with the most insane view as all the hypercars take position on the straight. What a crazy thing to be part of, what a line-up, and what an experience to push my Ford GT out here at COTA - even if it struggles to get many laps down.
There are two reasons for this; the first is that the 2017/18 GTs have a different cooling system which was updated for 2019s onwards. The second is having the front plate over the intake which doesn't exactly help with air flow management, and while it could be removed that's also a bit of an operation.

@@Shmee150swap out your camera mounts with Smallrig suction mounts, they're far superior to the Ram mounts you're currently running. I doubt but hope you see this.

I'm really surprised the temps climbed into warning territory even with the Texas heat, this is a dedicated Le Mans endurance racer after all.
Me too! The design of that car has a ton of airflow past the engine. Maybe a radiator and/or intercooler isn’t working as designed?
I’ve done a track day with BMW M-Cars there in July with triple digit temps and they didn’t overheat.
It's a different cooling set up for racecars. Street cars are made that they can go slow. Race cars have to go fast all the time in order to stay cool.
Don't be silly - this is a consumer vehicle built like any other Ford and just the same as the previous problem riddled GT.
@@petercrombie6652 If you're referring to Jeremy Clarkson's GT, that was an aftermarket immobilizer system his insurance company forced him to install; not Ford's fault. The 05 GT was never "problem-riddled", that's a myth.
What 2 laps at average speeds and it needs to cool down and it should get cooler on the straight as it has more airflow should it not? All the things that Tim mentions about hyper cars, like his Senna requiring shocks after a couple of thousand miles just makes me cringe. You understand why some are just collected and not driven.
Shmee, you should have an Ireland tour in ur Mustang GT500! you can get some gorgeous shots in the west and south east. The Emerald Island will love your Mustang here and it will be at home as well! Ur Lotus will prolly suit the roads better tho. also love the content! keep it up!!!!

The first time I saw one of Tim’s videos, he was driving , or doing something with, his GT Black Series. (It was already Solar Beam Yellow) I immediately fell in love with that car and knew I had to have one. (I have a picture of an orange one as my Lock Screen on my phone. Dream car!) But when I looked up the information about them, I knew immediately it would never happen because of the price. A couple
hundred grand out of my price range. But, I also learned there’s different models that I could afford. Well, about 4 weeks ago I bought a 2016 AMG GTS. And, I’m absolutely in love with it! A giant Black Series style wing has been ordered, and will be here in a few weeks. Lowering springs will be here tomorrow. Rims will be powder coated Satin Black in the next couple of weeks. Once that’s all here, I’ll be wrapping it in a proper super car color, Lime Green. (I’m a wrap installer for a living) Then it’ll be time to do down pipes and a tune. I freaking can’t wait!
All because of Tim and his GT Black Series. If you have a dream, go chase it. The reward is amazing!

Sometimes a balanced vehicle is as you said just as important! I once had the chance to drive in a Sports 2000 and boy was that so beautifully balanced it actually would be netural in its nature, in some very high speed corners! It was such a joy to drive!

This car is the highest mileage GT in the world at this moment. If you've seen the hundreds of other videos where this car was tracked and driven hard, I'm actually surprised it hasn't broken before hand.
@Shmee150 not a fan of the Title. Other than that, great video again even though the cameras struggled. It was great seeing the Ford GT at speed at Cota. Cota has sort of become a favorite of mine in RR3 (i play regularly). Such a great track to play around with different lines and speeds... I love that.

I drove a Porsche 911 and a Mclaren 570s at Cota back in 2015... fun times!
I'm surprised that GT reduced the power already at such relatively low temps (both the oil and coolant) for the track. Also, the car did not have any message to stop driving at full speed, just that it reduced the power, to stop the rising of the temps, so there was nothing broken.
This seems to be a problem with the mechanics of the car itself. Why was it overheating in the first place on the first lap. Is it the Ac Being on the whole time, Is it the rolling resistance causing the engine to work harder because of the Low pressure?.
Tim, you should try and bring the GT up to Road America if you ever get the chance! Would be an awesome track drive up here in Wisconsin!

Really interesting point of discussion - Ford engine / coolant temps - Wanted to know peoples thoughts on this .. The coolant temp was 119 Celsius @ 87mph ? Is this normal? Some cars I have seen run 600bhp ie a TT but temps stay low - My fans come on too at 90mph ( on the track lol) so, What is it?

Never heard Circuit of the America's called an iconic race track... what makes it so Iconic...? Is it the elevation changes...?
Likely guess because the weather is so hot in US, plus the ford gt was able to get as much air flow into it, try waiting till the tracks are a bit cooler then the car won't over heat.

Yet there are guys in the GT forum funny 170 mph such as Big Bend Road race for 120 miles and tracked at COTA with no issues. Tim needs to get his car checked

To Shmee, please rev your engine to 3500 rpm and make your engine water pumps work plus drive at least at 60 km/h so radiators get enough air flow.
Was it the TC that makes it overheat? Im sure if you turn traction control off, it helps keep the car cool

Overheating wouldn’t be acceptable in my opinion. Thermostat different for UK spec cars perhaps due to cooler temps versus US?

122c =252f....whoooa the GT is hot. Maybe add some Royal Purple ICE to the radiator, it definitely works in my car to drop the temps.
@@AB-80-X i could see that being the case since Shmees cars maintenance is up to spec. Reminds me of the previous Corvettes that would overheat on the track from the factory, which was later addressed after customer complaints. With the Texas heat and that he probably had the A/C on definitely doesnt help, but its still disappointing that the cars cooling capacity is incapable. The Royal Purple Ice might have given him one more good lap, or brought the temps down 10-15 degrees which may help prevent the aluminum engine from warping while under load.
