You can tell he's always resented that thing his dad said, or rather how he said it. And with good reason.
One Black Coffee.
In his dad's defense, I think my dad had a similar response to everything I ever wanted to do. It's was a sort of preliminary test. Continuing despite support implied he was serious about it.
To crush his dad defence, my mom had a related strategy of directly saying "I think you're occupied with a wrong thing" (or idk it wasn't in english) every time I did anything except what she wanted me to. That lead to me hiding everything I wanted to do, not doing it if it could catch her attention, "i think I'm occupied with a wrong thing" becoming the voice of my doubts, me not knowing what I want and being completely lost, and eventually her altering her politics to other children then I already was in my 20s. And where did your dad's supposed intentions lead you?
Leonard Bernstein's father's excuse for discouraging him from a musical career was: "How was I to know he'd be Leonard Bernstein?"
@@potmki6601 Wow. That's exactly my mom. All of a sudden she has appreciation for her friends' children who took risks or did something other than go to good schools and get prestigious jobs. But throughout my entire life, she made fun of or discouraged all of my interests and talents that weren't doing math homework. The rest of the world will try to tell you no when you 'step out of line'. If anything, a parent's job is to be curious and to support their kids even if their interests seem impractical.
@@sharoncohen318 I believe it is the parents' job to make you do your math, and discourage "impractical" interests because going to "good schools and get[ing] prestigious jobs" is safe/reliable, and as a parent you are responsible for making sure your kid can have a secure life. It is up to the kid, if they are truly meant to be great in their own interests, to break free from what they are told to do and succeed despite everything else.
"No, one life of grades and getting high." -- such a great retort LOL
David Sirois seriously. I was so glad when he said that
Had to pause the video after that line to stop laughing so I could hear the rest.
I wonder if it was to imply the truth that drug addition and academic achievement can coincide and an addict and a nerd need not necessarily be two seperate people
@@sarahdaniel9912 he never said he was an addict drinking every weekend as a teen is normal outside of the US
@@henryhunt7536 he was an addict. He is now sober and never drinks
He was a working alcoholic as a teenager. Kid was ahead of the curve.
Right? Now I'm, like, intimidated by him. He was winning at school *and* drugs? God damn.
I think this is becoming me.
It's a very midwestern mindset. I remember it being similar where I was among my friends and I. You'd take care of your responsibilities and then when they were responsibly finished... anything goes!!!
Kid was a A---h===
@@a3gill As they say in the UK, "pay your way, then have a laugh".
i love when he has to laugh at himself for a second before he can say something he knows is a little crazy

I really love John Mulaney. I also love the boots he is wearing in this interview.
Jim Gillespie His boots need a Netflix special.
Big Boots
those boots are very nice!! anyone got a link?? (lol like they aren't going to be extremely expensive)
hailey coppock they’re redwings! pretty expensive but sturdy and absolutely GORGEOUS
Those are great Boots really.
Kinda sounds like high functioning depression
@@rdg0722 no it was most definitely not. This was two years ago in 2018. Maybe it is high functioning depression but it wasn’t drugs. Can u please stop saying false things like this it’s harmful and disrespectful asf.

John is so attractive in this interview...always attractive but more so in this video
CharisMarieTV it’s the black and white
It’s his casual look
Black and white flatters his complexion a lot.
Lv Garcia Yeah, for me that was it. I usually see him in a suit.
@@AxmxZ This just kind of fuels the fan theory that he was transplanted from the 40s into our modern times, lol.
watching this after he has checked into rehab and this makes me so sad. i hope he recovers
Good news
"getting grades and getting high" put that on a t-shirt
stereotypea123 that’s the equivalent of stay is drugs and do school
getting hiiiiiigh,, grades
John mulaney just has the most calming voice ever. I just want to go someplace where everybody sounds exactly like him
stacistaci100 that sounds like a terrible hellscape that I would definitely pay to go to
You'd need to carry around a history book to get all the references people make, that is if you're not old.
I’m late, but JUST said earlier today I wished he’d do asmr. Seriously the most calming voice 😌
He sounds so anxious, it makes me anxious. In hindsight i can tell when he's relapsed because it's the only time he sounded calm. Clean as an anxious whistle here.
I hate seeing him uncomfortable. We must protect the tall child

it almost erases his eyebags and yellow teeth
@@ella9163I didn’t even notice his teeth
@@imagineaworldlikethat4081 haha he doesn't have yellow teeth, it was a reference to one of his standups
get some rest, tall child!
Hahaha
this hit different now that he checked himself into rehab. i hope you get better mulaney 🥺❤️
ok but why does this perfectly describe almost every high honors student i know (i mean, we all KNOW why but still..)
Because they all have to be on some amphetamine (read Ritalin overperscription at ivy league schools) to physically function.
I graduated with a 4.5 like this, and went to college to find out that 80% of the other kids with 4+ there are exactly the same
It’s the only way we cope with the Pressure 😂
damn i want to hear more stories of john doing these drugs lol
Heather Lorenca - in that case, you must watch his new special on Netflix, ‘Kid Gorgeous’, in which he makes frequent reference to his surprisingly druggy past...
But of course, if you’re a fan of his, you’re going to want to watch the show anyway as it’s FREAKIN’ HILARIOUS.
There aren’t many comics these days who really make me laugh (I overdid it on the stand up comedy in my youth), but for some reason - his delivery, his particular way of viewing the world, who knows - just absolutely slays me & I’m on the floor weeping with laughter 😂
Superstarlight867530 Also, catch him on Seth Rogan's Netflix charity special. He was by far and away the best headliner. The Willy Wonka material killed me. I'm writing this from heaven 😇 Jesus says hi.
Yeah, but I don't think John talks about what his mushroom trips were like. If there's any of that let us know.
wickkidda he talks about it in an interview how he was on mushroom when he went to a David Bowie concert I’m pretty sure
Mary M what do you mean by that?
in light of recent news this hits different :(
“...Pause?”
I'm dying to see this whole interview. I love watching John Mulaney. Sam Jones you are an awesome interviewer.
cierrablue me too! he's a great storyteller.

@@73brook Can you send me the link to the podcast? I can't find it.
@@CherryVilla21 ok I did some googling and as far as i can tell, on Netflix the video versions are up but only up to season 3. So the John Mulaney episode isn't on Netflix but I found the audio here player.fm/series/off-camera-with-sam-jones-2309182/ep-146-john-mulaney

"What a double life anxiously striving for perfection and then holding the anxiety at bay with booze and drugs on the sly." Can we all stop pretending this is surprising?
sad to hear he's in rehab now, hope he's okay
It's mad when people say that you've 'abused' alcohol. That's a load of shit. If anything, alcohol abused me, the dirty little prick. Alcohol doesn't wake up on a Sunday morning holding back vomit trying to work out where they are and how they got there whilst also trying to ascertain through snatched memories and the tales of friends and loved ones how much friendship and reputational damage you caused, which you seriously can't remeber. xx
Recovery isn’t a straight line. Hope he knows we’re still proud of him for how he’s doing so far. And being willing to get help now is inspirational still.
He’s in rehab, we love you John ❤️ 🙏🏼
"Take Ambien to see what it would do"...
Was it racism? Did it make you racist?
what does that mean? I genuinely don't know lol I don't mean to bash whatever ur trying to say
Christmas Lamoureux Part of Roseanne's excuse for her racist tweets was that she had taken ambien
Really omg😂😂😂
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Christmas Lamoureux better yet, the drugmaker *actually* replied stating that "racism is not one of the known side effects".
You can't make these things up lol
John Mulaney is ridiculously good looking....in black and white. 😀
He looks and sounds like an old timey movie star
He is ridiculously good looking always
i have been listening to or watching something of his nearly every day this month, and at least once a week throughout the pandemic. wish there was a way to send all the happiness and comfort and enjoyment his work has brought to me back tenfold now.
He doesn’t want his parents to know he killed Princess Di
True
"How did he get access to that?" Is he talking about John's biters?
This interview made me cry. And that is a stupid thig to cry about
Oh god... I can feel how uncomfortable John is from here
Well he did warn us.
I am absolutely loving these more serious interviews. John is just such a nice person to hear talk about anything.
He is just beautiful.
How can something in black and white have so much colour in it
love this man with my whole life. i really hope hes doing alright. same with anna. same with petunia fish.
Just realised he has the biggest/widest dimples I've ever seen hahaha
Speaking of which ... remember in one of your monologues : margaritas and ambien. It didn't Not work.
Such a perfect delivery.
*daquiris
Ooohhh this black and white effect is really nice! Makes John look a little more graceful. A little more beautiful. Especially at the scene where he was closing his eyes thinking back to his mother at 0:11. His eyelashes are clearly visible.
Also the face he made at 0:08 😂
"Pause..?"
Why do I know so many people in Chicago with John's story?
Same. I’m from Chicago and it’s like watching my brother.
He’s so attractive
i wish i could've pushed thru during hs like he did :(. i struggled so hard to do well in classes and all the teenager shit but i was so depressed and truly was just not smart enough which sucked
this comment makes me so sad!struggling in school doesn’t mean you’re not smart enough, esp if you were dealing w depression. i hope you’re doing better now!
John looks so attractive in this
I just read About 20 min ago that he enter rehab
Mulaney's shoes were sick
Blackout drunk in highchool?! I thought he had been sitting in a room eating saltines for 20 years.
John is cute, he always is, but this is the first time i find him genuinely hot.. i was like staring so much. He has such a nice smile..
This tall child looks incredible
It was nice to see John be himself, I think he's brilliant and very talented but I wish when he did the late night shows that he presented himself like he did in this interview. This was the first time I've seen the real side of John and he should show it more often I think he'd be surprised to see that people would really like the real John.
Stay strong John 😞🙏🏻
And his parents didn't know or even suspect enough to actually determine whether their son was leading a double life? He seems to have turned out well, but who knows?
This video looks like it was shot in heaven
Am I the only one here who didn't have any friends who invited me to parties like that in high school? I feel like such a loser lmao. I never got wasted until I was 20
he’s so pretty omg
Doesn’t touch on if he has insight into why he was doing drugs and needing that level of emotional pain relief at such a young age , says something is off with everything.. including needing to please parents for their approval, while suppressing ones authentic self. But who knows really.
There's plenty of subtle red flags he's said to suggest that. Or maybe it's just more obvious to me because my parents were like that. I had other maladaptive coping mechanisms other than substance abuse - but that's a very common one. He's clearly highly anxious, depressed, desperately wants to be liked, felt that he needed to perform, has a fake self, was a self-proclaimed latch key kid - yeah, his parents (lawyers and Catholics is also an indication honestly) definitely traumatized him somehow. Probably emotional abuse and/or neglect.
HaHa me too. Straight A's for 12 years, football team and basketball team, last 3 years of high school = getting drunk 4 nights a week, smoking a personal oz of pot per week, acid once a month, and coke every weekend. Did not look the part...by design. Good times.
I should add that I had a fake ID when I was 17, but like John I also had an extreme baby face. Store clerks would look at it,look at me,look at it for a while, then shrug, sigh, and say OK......A couple times the clerk quizzed me about the info on the ID, luckily I had all of the fake info memorized. Many times I would be buying alcohol for 10 to 20 people, so that would draw even more scrutiny from the clerks. I wish I still had that ID, but I gave it away when I turned 21...Good Times
Ryan Michael......I'm sensing a ton of sarcasm in that statement.
wtf... how are you still mentally stable?
And now you're a Supreme Court Justice. Good job Brett.
@@jetsamperes5762 Who's Brett
he’s such a pretty man
So many kids in my highschool we like John in this way not like the 50's demnor, but like got high and got good grades never really had a home life problem that would distract them just a teenager getting stoned drinking and being an adult at it
"one life of getting grades and getting high" iconic
Well, there was that time when he was the Hillside Strangler he doesn't want them to know about.
John: Describing substance abuse and not being able to be open with loved ones
Background music: 🎶🎵pleasant piano😌
2:15 I really identify with this, as an over achieving anxious person who also goes wild

Hey guys, when is the podcast coming out?? Pls hurry!!!
5/17/18
I love the black and white. So much.
I've never watched this show before but the grey scale really makes john looks a 80's mafia member
This man is one of the very few that makes me laugh out loud.
cocaine should be legalized. stop war on drugs.
No it shouldn't cocanie has ruined lives
i think decriminalizing it would be a better idea because drugs have ruined so many lives and punishing ppl for having an addiction is causing a lot of problems and a huge racial divide in our country but completely legalizing it would mean that ppl who sell harmful and even deadly drugs wouldn’t face consequences for ruining others lives.
weed doesn’t kill people, it should be legalized everywhere. cocaine kills people
@@laycebug3260 i wasn’t talking about weed. weed should 100% be legalized.
This isn’t surprising. Lots of smart kids from good families experiment and dabble with drugs. The difference is they’re smart, they’re curious, and they want to explore other areas of their psyche. Then they get down to business and graduate. Then afterward they do adult shit and continue exploring more ways to expand their minds.
People who are intelligent like to explore the what ifs and tap into parts of their brains they can’t readily access. It’s natural to be curious about what else is out there. Very normal and healthy. Just be responsible. Duh.
I love John Mulaney. I’m so here for these interviews.
Five minutes later....
CNN:John mulaney exposed!
And this is why john mulaney is one of my heroes
I think of how life could be different for him if he had been treated for an anxiety disorder when he was young.
John Mulaney is such a sweetie
...... a young adult drinks alot in college and the interviewer asks "Where were the parents?" .... is this a new concept or something? Pretty sure kids have been partying in college for decades
He said that he drank a lot in high school not college
i really want to listen to the podcast but the jason isbell one is popping up instead of his!
such a strong asian american woman representation
LMAOOOOOOOO ME
Damn, one of the few good interviewers left
You know what's crazy? Mulaney was a bad boy in High School.
0:09: Looks at interviewer like he's an idiot. "Pause?" LOL
Wow. Given his admission of recent struggle with addiction, this is a pointed reminder of how these problems start.
Things you don't want your parents to know you say on an internet interview
the biggest thing is that he is a tall child
love his sincerity
My god he’s even more beautiful in black and white 😳
You don’t ask someone if they used to be a “black out drunk”
He had a bit on his first comedy album The Top Part called "Blacking out and Making Money" where he describes everything the host is talking about. That's why the host asks.
I really dont believe how a dude that looks like him could do drugs at age 13
Do we have to have the video in black and white? I don’t mind, but why is it not in color?
This was filmed back in the 40's, as you know, John is immortal.
love how he paints it like this whole big thing you use to go drink and take drugs ....sounds just like a normal tall child trying his best to me XD
honestly nothing wrong occasionally drinking a lot. As long as it isn't every day.
It's called weekend alcoholism and it can really bad depending on how much you actually drink. Google moderate drinking. I think it is no more than 2-3 drinks (beer counts) on a single day, and in the same time no more than about 7 drinks a week. So here you have it.
"You know, a crazy person."
I miss him already and wish him a speedy recovery!
It’s great that the interviewer didnt interrupt him too many times
that is exactly what my parents told me about music
only 3 minutes? I could have watched an hour of this:/
