    You can tell he's always resented that thing his dad said, or rather how he said it. And with good reason.

      In his dad's defense, I think my dad had a similar response to everything I ever wanted to do. It's was a sort of preliminary test. Continuing despite support implied he was serious about it.

    • @potmki6601
      @potmki6601 5 років тому +73

      To crush his dad defence, my mom had a related strategy of directly saying "I think you're occupied with a wrong thing" (or idk it wasn't in english) every time I did anything except what she wanted me to. That lead to me hiding everything I wanted to do, not doing it if it could catch her attention, "i think I'm occupied with a wrong thing" becoming the voice of my doubts, me not knowing what I want and being completely lost, and eventually her altering her politics to other children then I already was in my 20s. And where did your dad's supposed intentions lead you?

      Leonard Bernstein's father's excuse for discouraging him from a musical career was: "How was I to know he'd be Leonard Bernstein?"

    • @sharoncohen318

      @@potmki6601 Wow. That's exactly my mom. All of a sudden she has appreciation for her friends' children who took risks or did something other than go to good schools and get prestigious jobs. But throughout my entire life, she made fun of or discouraged all of my interests and talents that weren't doing math homework. The rest of the world will try to tell you no when you 'step out of line'. If anything, a parent's job is to be curious and to support their kids even if their interests seem impractical.

    • @HenryTheTodd
      @HenryTheTodd 4 роки тому +10

      @@sharoncohen318 I believe it is the parents' job to make you do your math, and discourage "impractical" interests because going to "good schools and get[ing] prestigious jobs" is safe/reliable, and as a parent you are responsible for making sure your kid can have a secure life. It is up to the kid, if they are truly meant to be great in their own interests, to break free from what they are told to do and succeed despite everything else.

      But of course, if you’re a fan of his, you’re going to want to watch the show anyway as it’s FREAKIN’ HILARIOUS.
      There aren’t many comics these days who really make me laugh (I overdid it on the stand up comedy in my youth), but for some reason - his delivery, his particular way of viewing the world, who knows - just absolutely slays me & I’m on the floor weeping with laughter 😂

      There's plenty of subtle red flags he's said to suggest that. Or maybe it's just more obvious to me because my parents were like that. I had other maladaptive coping mechanisms other than substance abuse - but that's a very common one. He's clearly highly anxious, depressed, desperately wants to be liked, felt that he needed to perform, has a fake self, was a self-proclaimed latch key kid - yeah, his parents (lawyers and Catholics is also an indication honestly) definitely traumatized him somehow. Probably emotional abuse and/or neglect.

      I should add that I had a fake ID when I was 17, but like John I also had an extreme baby face. Store clerks would look at it,look at me,look at it for a while, then shrug, sigh, and say OK......A couple times the clerk quizzed me about the info on the ID, luckily I had all of the fake info memorized. Many times I would be buying alcohol for 10 to 20 people, so that would draw even more scrutiny from the clerks. I wish I still had that ID, but I gave it away when I turned 21...Good Times

      i think decriminalizing it would be a better idea because drugs have ruined so many lives and punishing ppl for having an addiction is causing a lot of problems and a huge racial divide in our country but completely legalizing it would mean that ppl who sell harmful and even deadly drugs wouldn’t face consequences for ruining others lives.

    This isn’t surprising. Lots of smart kids from good families experiment and dabble with drugs. The difference is they’re smart, they’re curious, and they want to explore other areas of their psyche. Then they get down to business and graduate. Then afterward they do adult shit and continue exploring more ways to expand their minds.
    People who are intelligent like to explore the what ifs and tap into parts of their brains they can’t readily access. It’s natural to be curious about what else is out there. Very normal and healthy. Just be responsible. Duh.

      It's called weekend alcoholism and it can really bad depending on how much you actually drink. Google moderate drinking. I think it is no more than 2-3 drinks (beer counts) on a single day, and in the same time no more than about 7 drinks a week. So here you have it.
