Early side note I noticed from the video. There are two official cases fros Asus. A 40 dollar and a 50 dollar one. The 50 dollar one conforms closer to the Ally X while the 40 dollar one basically just has holes for the thumb sticks. The 50 dollar one is also a hard shell over the 40 dollar soft shell
I just got mine 3 days ago. Easily the best piece of kit I've bought since the Steam Deck. Being able to play Silent Hill 2 on Medium-High settings, 900p and 50FPS with about 1 hour and 50mins of battery life is just nuts.
Sounds great! Personally still need to try Silent Hill 2 on it, but according to your story it seems very good! I also agree the ROG Ally X and Steam Deck are a great piece of tech!
I love my ally x. I bought this to be on the go and the big battery really gets me gaming for a while. I was playing emulation for almost 10 hours. I played Elden Ring on it, performance (17w) high settings with 50+ fps at 900p. Battery was showing about 2.5-3 hours. If you play on low probably with silent mode (13W) probably longer. I would say the ally x has same battery life as my Nintendo switch for demanding games. And I have put bazzite on my machine too and it's great. You can have a console like experience and write a super simple script to boot to windows anytime from bazzite. It really is best of both and best handheld system on the market right now. If you don't mind the price, then this is the handheld to get IMO.
Seems like you have a really good experience with the ROG Ally X! And Bazzite sure is cool. I can agree with you, if you have the money to spend, it’s definitely worth buying!
I kind of want one of these - I just can't get past the £800 price tag in the U.K. I've put one in my online basket a couple of times and then stopped before purchase. The price just seems a bit excessive, in order to be able to play my PC games at a fraction of the frame rate and quality.
Yeah the price tag is something that also made me hesitant to buy it a couple of times. Eventually I did bite the bullet and bought one and am happy I did. A good PC will provide a better gaming experience in terms of graphics and frames. However a handheld is a completely different gaming experience. Its just nice to pick up and play your pc games library anywhere you want (in and out of the house or on a trip). Its also great when your setup is occupied by a family member, so you can just continue gaming. At least thats my experience.
I had a Legion Go and a Steam Deck OLED so I wasn’t interested in the Ally X because of the smaller screen size. I bought it on a whim because I was tired of the Legion Go battery dying so fast. The Ally X won me over with the VRR screen. It’s insanely good even though it’s smaller than the other 2 screens. The battery last for hours. It’s been my main handed since I bought it.
@@SSSDarkgaming Yes, Ive been using the ROG Ally X more than my Legion Go. However some games are more fun to Play on the Legion Go, because of the big screen.
@@TimmyTC Thats a difficult one to answer as it comes down to your budget, needs and expectations. What are your main use cases for a pc handheld and what is your budget? Maybe I can help you a bit. I also made a video about the steam deck LCD/OLED model and about the Lenovo Legion Go. Hopefully that will help as well.
@@TimmyTC if its the regular ally, personally I wouldnt go for that, becauce of the SD card issues. If you want something portable and not to much thinkering I would go for the steam deck oled. If you want a big screen and dont mind being mostly stuck to a wall outlet and having to use windows, go for the legion go. If you have a lot of money to spend and want a portable handheld that is powerful, has a good battery and dont mind using windows (or setup bazzite) I would go for the ROG Ally X
I would be way better then an OG Ally. But from what I’m seeing high end games at upper end specs are running like 20 gigs of RAM to 21 gigs & change. I saw Forspoken running at 22 gigs. Obviously with reduced settings the Ally is gonna run these games, but if you want max output you need 32 gigs of RAM & you can get it from China or the secondary market for prices competitive with this. With 32 gigs of RAM I was able to run Silent Hill 2 at 1080p ultra settings 30+ fps. Maybe drop a few frames to enable ray tracing but it’s still playable. You can run Until Dawn & 720p ultra settings ray tracing enabled 30+ fps. I did this with an Aya Neo Slide, something that originates from China, but likely all you need is 32 gigs of RAM from somewhere. At the top end 24 gigs of RAM still isn’t enough. No way you can use 21 gigs of that 24 gigs for gaming in order to max out these games.
It’s more the ram then the chip or the processor when it comes to these handhelds. You would likely be running almost everything with no issues at ultra settings w/ 64 gigs of RAM. You would not need anything above a 7,000 series chip like the one installed in the Ally X. (Well, it’s a hybrid version of a 7,000 chip anyway) But 64 gigs costs a fortune. Obtainable in China if you want to go broke. lool.
Personally i dont mind games not being maxed out on a handheld. As long as they have a decent and stable frame rate and good enough graphics. I did hear some cool things about Aya Neo. Im also curious what the next generation of handhelds will be. I expect that shouldnt take to long before we will see them.
I own the Ally X....its a great in hand console BUT its far too expensive for what it is. My problem with it... is that my $200 7 year old laptop still kicks the dogshit out of it, and still runs AAA titles like Cyberpunk on high/ultra settings over 100+ FPS at 1080p....here in Canada the Ally X is $1250 after tax...is it worth $550? Absolutely....but is it worth $1250? Fuckkkkk no
The AMD hx 365/370 970/980M/z2 extreme really isn’t that much of improvement over the ally x z1 extreme either get the ally x or wait for RDNA 4.0 in 2026
I bought mine in best buy like a week ago, then they went on sale 100$ off like 4 days ago. i Went again and I did the price match and they returned my 100$.

I already have a powerful gaming desktop but I’ll get an ally x for emulators and mortal kombat and street fighter on the go
Would be perfect for that!

Thank you, glad you like it! What are you currently playing on your Steam Deck OLED?
