I really love my rog ally i got for 300€ but to spend more than double on almost the samw device it needs more than just better battery life. It really needs full sized sticks. Playing fps multiplayer games puts me at a noticeable disadvantage even in gamepad only pools.
Also yeah it's not worth upgrading if you have the OG Ally, but if you like be and don't have either, it makes more sense to get the Ally X. It would only be a worthwhile upgrade if it had an OLED screen. I'd wait a few months till the Ally 2 comes out if I were you.
I really wish someone would do a comparison of the button "clickiness" of different handhelds. I know it's not super important to most people but it's very important for me that they are quiet enough to game at night without waking up my wife. But no one talks about it at all.

I dodged a bullet getting the Ally X on accident, cause i didnt know it even existed, I was getting an Ally, and thought I could choose between White or Black, so I got a black one, which turned out to be an Ally X
I like to play online mp games like the finals, black ops 6, marvels, overwatch, rocket league and single player games like ghosts of tsushima, silent hill 2, and indiana jones - should i get a rog ally x or refurbished steam deck oled for under $ 600?
@johnathancooper5753 I went with the ally x and I couldn't be happier especially after they just released the next iteration of their frame gen and it works wonders for framerate -it's on sale right now at best buy for $699 in the US
I don't own either but have spent ungodly amounts of hours researching, and from what I know, you're probably better serviced by the Ally X due to the games you listed. Multiplayer games have anti-cheat software that sometimes don't play well with Linux, which the Steam Deck uses. BO6, for example, doesn't run on the SD unless you install Windows, which the Ally has by default. EA games are also notoriously difficult because of the EA launcher, so Battlefield won't be a simple process either. But even if you do jump through all the hoops to play those games, or even opt for the singleplayer games you mentioned, the next issue is performance. The games you listed are all pretty modern titles, which the Steam Deck isn't well known for. BO6, Marvel Rivals, Silent Hill? All these games run terribly by most standards, requiring you to slaughter graphics for an inconsistent 30fps or so. The Ally X fixes both of these problems - runs Windows for your mp games and has significantly more power for modern titles (tho you'll have to research more for HOW MUCH better performance you'll get with it.) The Steam Deck has a lot of great upsides - trackpads for emulation / navigation, incredible right to repair, a blooming and engaged community willing to help and create for the system, and if you can snag a refurb, SIGNIFICANTLY better price. But if you really wanna play titles similar to what you mentioned, Ally X is the way to go if you can shell out the extra cash.
And a few extra stuff bc the previous comment was too long; If you have a good pc but just wanna game on the couch or in bed (like me), the Steam Deck can stream games from your pc, if your wifi and stuff is good enough. Might help with modern titles if that's an option, as I've heard it's quite good. Additionally, CES 2025, which is basically a big tech showcase, is running Jan 7 to 10. Valve has already confirmed they're guests for Lenovo's showcase, and I've seen leaks floating around of a Lenovo Legion Go S, running officially supported SteamOS. I imagine there's gonna be more handheld pc news, so if you're willing to wait for it, then it's an option. Buyer's remorse is a bitch after all.
I still think their RMA process is shady. I accidentally dropped ally and my right joystick malfunctions. I plan to repair it myself rather than send it in fearing more issue caused. But the product itself is actually fine just the service center and warranty stuff is just non existent..
I have the original Ally. The UI is nowhere near as good as a console/steam deck, but I put up with it because the portability makes it easier to pick up and play compared to my Xbox
I love my Ally but the most frustrating thing keeps happening. When I’m playing NBA 2K25 right after a game I get a graphics card error and my game doesn’t save. My Ally is fully updated so I don’t know why this keeps happening

Unless Microsoft is helping them subsidise the cost, when Valve releases SteamOS publicly, these companies just need to ship their handhelds with SteamOS by default. At the end of the day, no one is playing competitive anti cheat shooters on handhelds and the other few shortcomings of SteamOS vs Windows are far outweighed by all its positive strengths, ease of use and simplicity.

From what I have seen sleep works most of the time of the ally x and other times there are issues with it. You can always download bazzite if you dislike windows so much. The steam is just too weak for me to even consider it and that goes for a lot of other people.
There are absolutely people playing anti cheat shooters..... That has been literally one of the main selling points from the many ally reviews I've watched
I don’t think Steam Os should be on by default, I would rather have windows on it despite really liking Bazzite. People are also overselling Bazzite/Steam Os. Yes, the experience is great when it works, but the issues aren’t just anti cheat. Many games simply don’t work or have their settings menu blocked on Linux. If you’re even just slightly interested in using mods in games it’s waaay more difficult at times in Linux. No gamepass either.
