- Today I give you my list of some of the most intelligent characters in the Borderlands universe.

Another point to Jack’s intelligence, he didn’t just hire vault hunters, he MADE a vault hunter. Two even depending on how you look at it. He took a regular, run-of-the-mill CL4P-TP and not only made it a legitimately dangerous bot, he made it dangerous enough to stand with the likes of Wilhelm and Nisha. And depending on how you look at it you could also argue he’s responsible for Timothy going from loser nerd to a badass vault hunter as well.

He organised for Doppelgänger’s creation, but there’s no evidence he was directly involved in the creation process (with training and brainwashing and stuff) - he likely took advantage of some of the brainiac Hyperion scientists
Rhys! He was smart enough to put himself back together after getting Jack out of his system and was able to rebuild Atlas from the ground up. He clearly has knowledge to build the Viper Drive in BL3, which I think comes from his time as a "bad guy".
ALSO Zero doesn't seem like someone that would stick with someone if they weren't worth his time and effort. He must have saw something in Rhys to stay and build Atlas with him.

@@imanaxolotl7999 I'm really hoping that's not the case. I like his story arc and his redemption story that Tales gave us. I love me some crazy Jack, but I think he needs to stay dead.
When games start being back "the big bad from # games ago" the franchises tend to suffer to grow over all. I like him as a cautionary Tale of power and greed, which is kind of the underlying theme of all the BL games. It's a world built on corporate greed and evil and Jack was the epitome of that. Rhys is a good story of how you can come from that, build a company and maybe not be evil.
He did enjoy killing in BL 3 though. But his planet (and people) were being killed.

1. would help the vault hunters. He had a chance to kill them and didn't do so.
2. He would kill them even before BL3 story because I can't believe he wouldn't want to avenge his death.
3. I don't want to believe Jack would grow a mustache.
I think it’s actually possible that both of Tannis’ backstories can coexist. It could be that as a kid she was a fan of Typhon and dreamed of finding a vault, which is why she became an Eridian researcher, but at some point in her career as a researcher determined that there were no more vaults. Being as stubborn as she is she would likely then adamantly believe that the first vault was the only one until she saw firsthand proof that there were others.
It's also possible that Tannis, still technically bieng insane, made up the second story after the fact and ended up actually believing that was her motivation. Maybe her ego wouldn't let her involvement with Pandora be a chance encounter so she made up a fantastical reason how her current situation is entirely due to her own actions.
I think she has utterly convinced herself that this was entirely an Eridian Plot. If she doesn't believe that she was a fan of Typhoon, purposely went to Pandora looking for Eridians and the Vault, and went for it all, it means that it is HER FAULT. Her ignorance of things that "weren't science" directly caused the death of her team. Cognitive dissonance between "Eridians defy science, they can't make sense" and "Eridians must be studied, they MUST make sense" broke her.
I have once lied about an event in my life so much that I almost forgot what the truth was. I can only imagine what it would be like for Tannis. This doesn't really make her a good person because she's completely absolved herself of the responsibility of the deaths on her hands (or even justified them), but then again nobody in Borderlands is "Good".
Clearly Marcus is the smartest one since we're arguably living in a figment of his imagination

Also the group of Hyperion scientists that Jack killed in the pre sequel totally deserve an honorable mention. Davis Pickle was also a pretty smart kid especially considering he had been surviving basically on his own for a long time on Elpis.
Springs was also incredibly intelligent with scrap and junk. She might not be Scooter level of engineer but she clearly is highly educated.

Gaige is probably tied for the biggest reason I think it's such a shame they didn't implement first person character dialogue until Pre-Sequel and the headhunter DLC for BL2. Her combination of ego, intellect, and teenage angst would have made for some really great character interactions with Handsome Jack and a huge number of other characters. The other reason tied with her, obviously, is Krieg.
Krieg actually probably deserves a slot on the list of smartest characters himself. On the surface he appears to be an idiotic musclebound incoherent lunatic, but his inner voice is more than just sane. He's able to plan ahead and strategize, and is probably the biggest reason for their combined survival. His ability to read situations and come up with strategies for survival on the spot, and then somehow manage to convey this to the "other guy" in a way in which he will (often enough to survive) listen shows that he must have a high degree of intelligence and adaptability.
The first time I played as Krieg I was blown away the first time I heard the voice in his head, gave his character an absurd amount of depth in that one moment. I don't remember the quote because years ago but it was poignant enough to make me go woah
Krieg is probably the most tragic character in the Borderlands, and it's all down to one quote. And it lies within his first B2 Trailer.
It's when Maya is about to be attacked by the rats; and Krieg is trying to warn her. But the insane side of him just blurts out random threats and nonsense. Until he almost screams "TURN AROUND, PRETTY LADY!!" Like for just a moment, the insane side was able to think clearly. He's in a lot of pain.
@@N-GinAndTonicTM I feel like it's less that the insane side was thinking clearly and more that he was emotionally wrestling with himself. Unlike the sane side, the insane side seems to care a great deal with keeping up his insane ramblings, to the point of it seeming to be a source of pride.
However, unlike most Psychos he doesn't actually seem to want to hurt an innocent, or allow them to come to harm. It's almost like a game to him. As long as there was still a chance that Maya might simply protect herself, the insane side of Krieg kept up his stubborn incoherent bravado. The moment it looked like it was too late for that, his pride cracked and he gave in to his sane side's desire to protect her, and then didn't harm her or anyone else she deemed friendly after that.
Ultimately, I think the insane side is surprisingly social despite how little he gets along with "himself". He's forged an identity for himself, and appears to just want that identity to be upheld and appreciated.
Some characters I think are also worthy to be mentioned is (In summary):
1. Rhys
-He revived atlas and all of it from the scraps left by the former atlas and hyperion, creating new technology most notably the atlas tracking guns in BL3
2. Dr. Zed
-He's probably the most sane and straight-thinking person in the borderlands world, he's a medical professional good enough to support the people of sanctuary, the only downside is that he doesn't actually have a medical licence.
3. Fiona
-She's able to talk her way out of most situations and predict what the outcome of her actions are in less than a second, her predictions are also basically a one-to-one copy of what actually will happen.
4. Zer0
-Not only does he speak in haiku but also is the best stealth operative that probably exists in the BL universe, he can gather information and rumors like a magnet, knowing the location of anything he needs, and pinpointing the exact location of the target he (or you) have to kill.
5. Moze
-She may not be the smartest character but has decent survival and engineering skills, she survived out MIA in the wilderness for almost most of the time before BL3 and is the one repairing and modifying Iron Bear with all the equipment that you can unlock Iron Bear with.
6. Zane
-He's probably the best operative next to Zer0 and can use his tools and equipment like it's an additional limb, he's survived probably over hundreds of assassination attempts. He may have a fun, kinda insane personality but that's because he knows he almost certainly can't be beat.
This is just a theory but Zane could also be one, the assassin that helped kill the guy that was gonna till zero in the wambam island dlc from bl2

Unironically, we also can include torgue. He somehow engineered safe and practical gyrojets.
I was gonna mention Zane and zer0. Just like Metal Gear's "big boss", they know who to surround themselves with and how to use the gadgets others make for them, although I'd honestly not be surprised if zer0 made his own suit, which he theoretically made before the Hyperion ones created in the pre sequel.
Intelligence used to mean a lot more than just book smarts, people like Zane and zer0 would be among the greatest warriors throughout history.

I have a theory about Tannis
What if she was a woman of science, and went insane due to Pandora and all of her beliefs slowly being unraveled before her. However, while being insane, she managed to gaslight herself into believing she had always believed in the eridians and their technology, and she was always a fan of Typhon.

As someone who has lied about something to the point where I have to remind myself of the truth, I've always had a connection with Tannis from the first game. Even then you can see her brain trying to justify what's going on around her. That was BEFORE they Destroyer was shown. After that she's gone through so much shit I don't blame her mind being overwhelmed to the point of it unconsciously changing her memories to keep her stable.
How often do l make jokes about chemistry? Periodically.
Rhys. Resurrecting a dead megacorporation from the ground up is quite a feat, especially in only 7 years.
I would just like to say about Gaige. She's a good engineer she was just shaky on the software.
Hot take:
Tina should've been on here. Bomb making is an art. She might be crazy, but like Scooter, she's a master of the craft.
Between the engineering aspect, propellants and combustibles, and detonation triggers it's a lot to handle and a lot to get right
You could argue simple chemistry and electrical engineering aren't the most impressive attributes in the BL universe, but she's a specialist and has been perfecting her craft since she was a kid putting badonkadonks on dolls

You left out Claptrap. I know, I know, lot of people think he is annoying and a dum dum, but he is actually smart. He guided Vault Hunters to thier path, he can open ANY door, even super security doors, somehow as a defenseless robot he survived, now I am not sure, but he made in borderlands 3 a girlfriend for himself, also he leaded an entire claptrap revolution and made a battle machine called: MINAC.
Rhys is kinda of a Genius it many of the same ways Jack was, he just never had that spark that took Jack to where he turned evil instead he learned how to be a shrewd negotiator and still maintain his morals
Hector and Cassius could be on the list, because Hector knew more about the vault key than Tannis did, and Cassius created the antidote to one of the biggest pandemics Pandora has ever seen
And also Doctor Benedict too.
Should have put ZERO cause he has to watch what he says as he he tries to speak solely in Haiku but also he messed up that first time meeting Lorelei

Idk, zer0 is still in a weird spot. We dont even know what zer0 is. He cut off someones head once because other guy said it was a challenge to make him shut up. I wouldnt find him very intelligent to be honest.

Zaine, I am amazed he wasn't mentioned. He builds maintains and alters several insanely high-tech devices that few others even can use anything similar. Also like a lot of the top end mercs in other settings is smart enough to know when to move on to other locals and keep his enemies off balance. He even keeps a running list of all the major people in his profession and anyone that he has made an enemy of. He is also highly knowledgeable about the affairs of the major powers around the galaxy.
Myriad was the FIRST siren that directed it all when it came to the creation of the vaults, guardians, and how the containment of the destroyer happened. She even was the one that had the eridians wipe themselves out in order to contain the destroyer. she leaves fragments of her memories throughout bl3 you can tell she regretted what happened to the eridians, but it was better than the destroyer eating all the worlds and stars, than to lose one race of incredible beings.
The the video and would love to see a part 2 to this. I don't know if there is one but I'll look. New to the channel, I'm afraid.
Thanks for mentioning Scooter. He really is underappreciated. I would like to add one to the list, Ellie. She may be second to Scooter in mechanics but found a way to do more with her talents like turning bullies into her decoration and she masterminded the Zaford Hodunk war, which led to some of the best gear in the game for the player.
Lilith I believe has a Ph.D. as well which is debatable is canon. Salvador may also know as much about guns as Scooter does about mechanics but that may also be debatable. Zer0 may be a genius in the way of self-psychology as he knows how to keep himself calm during combat and even speak haiku...just like any man loses this ability in the face of an attractive woman or the love of his life, Lorelai.
felix from tales definetely should have been on this list! he taught fiona and sasha how to con, opened the (allegedly) uncrackable biometric lock on the briefcase, faked a whole vault key, made a bunch of other technical stuff and hid his plans so well that sasha and fiona had no idea he wanted to grab the money for himself!
How did tiny Tina not make it on the list? She definitely smart, well maybe more crazy than smart 😂

One thing I want to point out with Gaige is that she did make her robot arm after she cut her arm off. Now I dunno if that gives her more smart points for being able to make a robot arm with one hand while bleeding out, or it it nets less points cause she didn't make the robot arm before dismembering herself (nor did she tend to her wounds).
I think most of the main characters from Tales of the Borderlands were smart. Rhys and Vaghn were business smart and Fiona and Sasha were Con Artists!
Tiny Tina definitely belongs on this list. We first meet her when she is ten year old (or twelve?). She mastered the art of building bombs that Roland will let her advise him about stuff--as well as the rest of the Crimson Raiders
Sure, one could argue making things explode is easy... but she still has her eyebrows. That is the difficult part... making stuff explode and stll having eyebrows afterwards. There is the other option that she naturally would have a full on wolfman syndrome of facial hair, and the only reason she doesn't is because she keeps having extreme eyebrow fires happen on her face... but well... that is more an idea for fan artwork, and not proper canon

@@phantomnite she never actually builds explosives though, she ties dynamite to teddy bears. She’s also functionally illiterate and on a few minor occasions actually shown to be pretty bad at everything that doesn’t involve explosives.
Tannis didn't go insane from "living on Pandora" she was literally tortured for who knows how long. That's what broke her. Not just living in isolation, something she would have been fine with as an antisocial person.
But the echo logs in Borderlands 1 tells us that she became insane when she was all alone on pandora. I dont remember her getting tortured
@@phantomnite she was tortured by Jack to get the vault key. But maybe she was a bit crazy before then if she was studying the vault key. Guess it depends on the timeline. But getting tortured definitely messed her up. She said so herself.

T.K Baha and Mr Torgue both are weapon inventors with Mr. Torgue even created the explosive element. Tiny Tina is an explosive expert. Rhys is quite similar to Handsome Jack in some ways and overall a quite smart guy as well. Just to name a few.

I wouldn't put Scooter at all in the list given that Vaughn just flat out embezzled a billion bucks from Hyperion in a matter of *seconds* and the sane part of Krieg was actually a freaking corporate lawyer.

You got to give a shout out to my man Torgue. He managed to create weapons that fire condensed mirco explosives. I'm not talking about the ones that shoot rockets.
Think about the Harold, a weapon that shoots a small orb of energy which splits off into many more of equal strength.

Here's my personal honourable mentions that I feel could have made the list:
Alistair and Auralia Hammerlock
Alistair is, by far, the premier xenobiologist (that we know of)
Aurelia managed to maintain the hammerlock fortune, despite her opulent spending. That indicates, to some degree, that she is business savvy at the least
Troy Calypso
Let's not forget that Troy was the one who was able to actually start the COV by telling Tyreen what to say. Plus, he was closer to unleashing the true destroyer than anyone else. He also deduced that Elpis was the key to Pandora
Dr. Ned
Try to hate him as much as you like, Dr. Ned managed to engineer a zombie virus that overran a town, and prison complex, run by a megacorporation.
FL4K
I'd personally say FL4K is intelligent in a "mass amounts of knowledge" sense, seeing as they did serve as the indexing unit for the grand archivist. It's likely that they downloaded the contents of what they were indexing at some point, and this sheer level of knowledge is what granted them their sentience
Maya she learned so much about sirens after bl2 and how the powers transferred from one siren to another after death
Rhys rebuilt Atlas from literally nothing. He should be on here.
"Smart" is a rather large umbrella term for so many things: Booksmarts, Streetsmarts, emotional intelligence, calculation speed, cunning... One person can look smart because they are always asking the tough questions, while another can seems smart because they are wise to thier surroundings before anyone else. Somone can be a genius engeneer but a total idiot at holding a normal conversation. Somene can cleverly convince anyone of anytbing, but can't do basic arithmetic in thier head.
Fiona and Sasha are very cunning and experts at reading people and will bullshit thier way out of nearly anything.
Maya was a sage when it came to understanding things and people because her mind was always open to possibilities.
Tiny Tina's imagination and creativity is second to none in the franchise.
Alastair Hammerlock wrote an basted almanac.
Moze survived on her own in the wilderness for a long time while maintaining her mech with little to no resources, she survived despite her entire unit being killed.

also, another intelligent person, ya may say she is a lot of brawn, but the tiger of partalli, Amara, was not only brawn, but brains, and she knew how to make an image of herself, and well she knew how to make a business for herself to get herself to be known throughout the galaxy, also Zane can be added to the list, he basically made himself a one man army, including drones as well as defensive deployables etc. tbh a lot of smarts people can be in the list based on BL franchise, they have their owna smarts in their own way. but how you see it is based on interpretation too
@3:31 You're forgetting about the notion of the aliens sharing a hivemind. Even amongst insects irl there doesn't have to be a notion of a "grand architect" in favour of a collective unison that thinks and acts upon the collective's greater good.
I know you probably didn't want to just spam 1 family, but Ellie has made stronger vehicles than scooter ever has, and is heavily implied to be the lead architect of sanctuary 3. And on a side note has a surprising talent of getting bandit technicals with their drivers still inside to get stuck in giant crushers.

I think it would be fair enough to mention about Athena. Her combat skills and experience provided by Atlas' Omega squad are so impeccable that she single-handedly took down all of the Atlas, Lost Legion, Eleseer (with smartest of creatures stopping bullets with their minds), successfully defeated the Guardian and opened the Vault (that's because TPS is basically an Athena's story of her own). There are no neither Vault Hunters nor mercenaries capable of that, because in all other BL games Vault Hunters work in group of four.

I still haven't played much of bl3, but every lore video I see makes my joke of borderlands retcons 3 more accurate.
Well I think that at the ending of the pre sequel, jack 2 takes over and becomes the villain, so there are two of them, also moxxi is a talented mechanic, that kind of makes her 10 times more attractive
Zer0 and Fl4k is overlooked i think
In borderlands 3 Zer0 shows his smart in form of his ability to understand how to bypass high tech security, aswell as cunning tricks.
While Fl4k is well a robot, who well can tame the blood thristy animals of borderlands. His smart is more in terms of taming, but Thats because he simply do not care for human life.

The public service bots are made by Holloway Industries, based-on the schematic Marcie Holloway stole from Gaige's locker. And I read that Lilith has a Ph.D in Anthropology.

Can you do the craziest Characters in borderlands.
Moxxi and Jack definitely deserve their place on this list, but how are you going to include Scooter and Gaige for their respective specialties, yet leave out my girl Tina? She's like, 14 in BL2, and yet she's considered an expert in explosives by a professional soldier (who also made this list). Not only that, for someone as wild as she is, the evidence of her skill is fairly self evident not only in how effective her explosives are, but the fact that she still has all of her body parts. Even *good* bombmakers will have mistakes and end up missing a finger or other extremity, so the fact she has all of her fingers and toes (as far as we know) despite her many years of tinkering with explosives tells us just how brilliant she has to be in her field.
Moxxi also can get you infinite money in BL3. Giving her tips has a chance for her to mail you something, and those items she gives you back scale with your mayhem level... so you can turn a few thousand currency into hundreds of thousand by flipping what she sends you.
Ellie definably deserves more credit, she does a lot of what scooter does and carries on his legacy. Also she did make a space ship out of sanctuary which is pretty talented.
For me and Tannis, I truly believe she's combined her false memories with her real past with all her trauma to make her who she is today. She was once a person of science, but after all she's seen and gone through, I think her brain has convinced her that this was an Eridian Plot all along. To the point where she actually believe she was looking for Eridians the entire time as a coping mechanism for how far down the rabbit hole she's gone. It's how she's able to be "sane", and her stability now is based on her total change.
She was suffering from extreme cognitive dissonance and one side brutally won over the other. Cognitive dissonance is a mental conflict that occurs when your beliefs don't line up with your actions. She's a scientist that doesn't believe in myths, smack dab in the center of undeniable proof that shatters her very understanding of science, and at the same time her team is killed off. Way 'easier' to cope with "We were taking the risks as scientists who were looking for Eridians", rather than "my foolhardy ignorance got everyone killed".
The people in Borderlands, including all our heroes, aren't traditionally "good" people. Lil genuinely enjoyed liquifying people. Brick, and Mordecai enjoy killing. Roland is perfectly fine running an army, that routinely uses torture and killing innocents of Hyperion (because they "chose a side"). Tina isn't a good person either, same with Moxxi, I can go on.
I know I'm projecting myself a bit onto her, but I have absolutely lied to people about a specific event with such regularity that I have to actually remind myself about the truth of what actually went down. That wasn't even a traumatic experience, so I can only imagine how Tannis 100% thinks she was looking for the Eridians by the time BL3 is here. She truly doesn't remember the truth.
The destroyer is technically the smartest. It absorbs the knowledge of the planets it eats.

I don’t think it’s a retcon for tannis I think that after she went insane she started to believe what she was telling herself and how she always believed that the eridians existed is just a side affect from losing it
great video but you said tht tannis is the only charcter with a doctorate degree but how bout dr. nakayama? or br.benedict from the kreigs dlc in bl3? the only other doctor is zed (who lost his license) but these two are still on level with Tannis, at least in the way of schooling.
edit: i originally said zed has no degree but he actually just lost his license, there is no mention of his degree being revoked

The farmer and his wife you end up doing some side missions for in BL3 are just as smart as Tannis. Their technology includes nuclear reactors and sentient turrets.

Also, another incredibly smart person, but yes he met his demise, was Tokagawa, yes he murdered his family, in order to take over the business, but thats tactfulness, and he is clever enough to also be able to lie, and make it sound friendly or truth, real in a way. In a way was insane like jack, he even recreated his version of Zero tech (essentially is what ended up killing him bc the suit overloaded when you beat him)

One problem I have with Bl3 is that it throws the timeline out of the window, because in Bl1 Marcus(and he is like what 40-60 in Bl3) states that he has been told stories of the vault all his life by his father who in turn might have been told by his father because it's the legend of the vault, and with Typhon being the "first vault hunter" it becomes hard to place peoples ages if cryosleep isn't a thing it would make Typhon at least 150 or something. Well that is if Typhon really was the first hunter, because if the vaults were known and legends before Thypon, because someone should have gone after them before Typhon I mean the vaults "promised" wealth, power and lovers. And someone must have gone looking for them before.
People likely did search for Vaults before Typhon but Typhon was just the first to figure it out and find the very first vault. His finding the vault coining the term vault hunter makes sense because until he did find it (considering they are in different dimensions and planets well out of reach normally) people likely believed they didn't exist and it was his finding them and what's actually in them regarding the tech and riches that caused the influx of hunters. Something similar happened in American history with gold. Until the first few people found gold deposits in the west, wasn't really anyone actually looking.

I know he may come across as a whacky character, but I’d say Zane would have to be smart. To have survived as a hitman as long as he did requires skill sure, but also enough intelligence to use what he’s got to its maximum potential.
