    I love how Austin's videos are more entertaining, engaging, and thus informative than an actual class on the same topic. I actually impressed my doctor today by explaining (basically) how a virus works, because I'd seen this video years ago.

      jourdan roedel because it's tailored to a niche group of people. To a broad audience this would be very boring and uninteresting. From a business perspective why would you purchase a brand or idea that has a very small reach? You wouldn't. That's why this series is still attached to a UA-cam channel.

      Austin's SCIENCE! isn't very tv friendly. He swears constantly, makes adult jokes on routine, and pretty much all of the series' work (video game theorizing) is an extremely niche topic that anyone who isn't a gamer (and even a large percentage of people who are gamers and simply don't care) wouldn't find this trivia channel worth watching.

    Let's hope that when the FEV becomes real it creates zombies rather than super mutants. Because at least zombies can't operate mini nukes.

    • @michaeldekhtyar5172
      @michaeldekhtyar5172 8 років тому +1

      but we dont have mini nukes...

    • @shamanfryd
      @shamanfryd 8 років тому +9

      Look up the M-28/29. Mini nukes are real and have been around since the 1950s.

    • @shamanfryd
      @shamanfryd 8 років тому +7

      They worked. There is even a video of them showing it off. It weighed 50 lbs but hell it's been 60-70 years and we have been reducing the size of regular nukes for that entire time. No reason they wouldn't also be working on the mini nuke as a byproduct of doing small scale tests to save resources. Just because it isn't in production for mass use in part because we technically aren't allowed to make any more right now because of UN agreements doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Also the original comment was directed at mindless zombies are easier to deal with than semi intelligent hulks that can use modern weapons.

    • @shamanfryd
      @shamanfryd 8 років тому +3

      Well yeah obviously. Still not the point. Also how do super mutants use mini nukes in the game? Suicide bombers. If they find a stock pile of the ones designed to be fired from howitzers, the W48, then the same scenario could still play out. For super mutant suicide bombers the least achievable part is the super mutant and not the bomb that already exists.

    • @JonathanRossRogers
      @JonathanRossRogers 7 років тому +4

      Bethesda took inspiration from the M-28 or M-29 Davy Crockett Weapon System. However, the M-28 was nowhere near small enough to be carried and fired by a single person. Just the M-388 projectile weighed 76 pounds. The launcher had to be mounted on a tripod or vehicle. Personal miniguns are far closer to practicality than personal nuclear bomb launchers.

    Austin, I gotta say that your videos have become one of the highlights of my UA-cam. It helps that my physics-minded friends stop and actually listen to what you have to say (rather than... pedantically ranting), but also that you're enthusiastic about the material and somewhat relatable as another human being. Those moments like the SAD in a couple episodes ago made me forlornly smile.
    As for suggestions as to new ¡SCIENCE! topics, maybe Dishonored might peak your interest. Magical whales aside, the inventions of Anton Sokolov--particularly his Wall of Light--always struck me as more magical than plausible. A science-y invisible wall that vaporizes stuff on contact seems to occur somewhat regularly in videogames (SCP Containment Breach has it, as do other games undoubtedly), but with Dishonored 2 getting ads I just had to wonder how believable it is.
    Dude, you're awesome. You make me laugh. Have an awesome day and don't let the elections give you alcohol poisoning.

    A quick reminder that most of the giant creatures of the Wasteland, like the Rad Scorpions weren't just made from the mutations Radiations causes in DNA.
    They actually come from tanks containing the F.E.V getting damaged after the bombs, and leaking their contents into the atmosphere, literally creating new species almost overnight!
    So, must mutant creatures are actually a combination of F.E.V and Radiation alterations.
    Of course, this means there should be more variations of Super Mutant, as people got exposed to the virus in different conditions and quantities.

      He doesn't have to crush bastion, just use enough sudden force to cause damage to his circuits. Bastion likely "falls apart" as part of a sort of safety switch in case he ever be captured so that he cannot be reverse engineered. Now this brings us to the destroyed bastions we see on maps like eichanwalde, The answer is simple, they were damaged beyond what they deemed to be "repairable".

Glad you got to touch on the RL side of FEV though you only scratched the surface ^_^ was cool you mentioned CRISPR but you left out mutagens at the beginning which are what's used to cause "mutations" albent unlikely included in the FO lore... And Hybrids or "post humans" but I suppose that tiptoes between the enhanced soldiers (FEV enclave boss) and institute synths which would make it difficult to express within one short topic.. There are many real hidden gems in the lore if we read between the lines like the original Tesla armor description and how Tesla actually built it and had a patent and schematics which mysteriously disappeared around the time a certain military obtained a similar working patent. Kudos if you know where those refrences are ingame.

    • @curvingfyre6810

      because something that powerful will ALWAYS be a weapon, whether its creating genetically superior, but totaly subservient supersoldiers for the rich, or turning cancer into an airborn pathogen for eradicating entire countries for evil dictators, the market demand will be for weapons, and thus it will be a stain on the world even worse than the atom bomb.

    • @LamirLakantry
      @LamirLakantry 8 років тому +7

      CurvingFyre In that regard it is no different than any other tool humanity has ever possessed. From the bronze age, improving life and waging war with weapons and plows, to the splitting of the atom, powering cities and destroying them. Refusing CRISPER is no better than the cave-man who said no to bronze, or agriculture, or electricity, or any advancement of humanity. We now have a tool that can cure congenital heart disease and possibly extend and enrich our lives in a thousand different ways. Don't let fear of the unknown stop you from moving forward.

    • @curvingfyre6810
      @curvingfyre6810 8 років тому

      im not denying it, just telegraphing the fact that it will be a weapon, and a danger to the average person. not to mention the fact that the rich will make it outrageously expensive in the interest of making it into a privelege that only the rich can truly afford.

    • @LamirLakantry
      @LamirLakantry 8 років тому +1

      CurvingFyre What makes CRISPER unique is that it is cheep. That's it's quality. It is a scientific tool. You could possibly make a case for that some products made with CRISPER could be sold at artificially high prices, but making the process of manipulating genes intentionally higher is just illogical nonsense. It'd be like NASA building a rocket, then filling it with a bunch of rocks to make their trip to refuel the ISS unnecessarily more expensive for themselves.
      Also, the fact that a tool can be used malevolently is not an argument for that it shouldn't be used benevolently. Personally, I don't think it will be used destructively. There simply is no motivation. Science and market forces are the motivational drivers here.
      Besides I'm not at all convinced that ShoddyCast didn't go a little over the top with the technologies capabilities and embellished quite a bit. Besides, we already have super-viruses. CRISPER is just a tool to help us fight that threat too.

    • @curvingfyre6810
      @curvingfyre6810 8 років тому +1

      if the technology exists to create soemthing dangerous, human nature has proved time and time again that it will be used as such. and if one person has this dangerous advantage, everyone else will want one, etc, etc, its the concept of escalation. and i never said that they were going to make the process more expensive, their simply going to make people pay more for it. hereas an example of what i mean: in my sphere of freinds there are several with extremely strong alergies to certain things. there is a widespread treatment known as an epipen, which can be used to stop anaphylactic shock. another member of my circle studies in a facility that makes them. it costs about 5$ per pen. however, they cost over 600$ to buy. thats what im talking about. the medical applications will be all but unafordable to all but a few, and the weaponization will be nothing but a blight. thats not by the nature of the technology, but by the nature of the system.

      Toby Rowe theoretical atomic manipulation and alteration. You see im correct with the use of theoretical because i have no way to test and or prove it so ill just leave it at the shallow idea stage. Id assume if matter could be directly manipulated then the device would have a very dense rod(s) of the material(s) that the machine would essentially form things with. the rod would be small but weigh a ton or so as it actually contains that much compressed mass for ease of storage to use in the manipulation process to expand and shape the matter.
      I do not know of anything that works in the way i described so i dismiss the whole theory as game bullshit. makes for a totally bad ass story tool if you use it correctly.

    Problem with CRISPR is that while it is a usefull tool it is really limited to single celled organisms. That's why the Chinese are using embryos, the tool needs to be introduced early into a complex organism's development to work. At this current point (possible change but unlikely with CRISPR alone) we can't rapidly modify an already developed multicellular organism.

    the thing about viruses that confused me is how do we know so much about them but we still don't know how to classify of its alive or not

      Alex Wightman because the latter is more of a philosophycal question: what should an "object" have to be considered alive? Virus, in general, have some of the things that all living beings have, but not all of them.

    I have been wanting to say this for a while, but i am not sure if many would take an interest in it because it is just i fan theory. Could you look into the theory about "the towers" in the elder scrolls lore. I find it very interesting, bus somwhat confusing.
