  • In this video, I show you how to use a GSM module (SIM800L)
    to send and receive SMS messages from your computer. You can find the SIM800L or LM2956 buck converter module on Amazon or Ebay. Search for 'SIM800L' or 'LM2956 buck converter'

    thank you so very much, a bit of searching and this is the first video I found after a good bit of searching that covered SIM usage properly and was not just about setting up GSM with a over built module that used more power than I needed. they also did not cover the basics and basic tool information like you did in such great detail. My usecase is a little different but now I finally have a good understanding of the direction I am going in.

    Great video! I've just bought one of these modules. Could I simply drop a 5 volt supply through a diode and provide a large capacitor after the diode, to power the module?

    Hi. Thanks for the class. One doubt: the SIM800L is only 2G? won't the 2G system end? therefore, can using this module be a problem?

    Good day sir,
    Is it possible to operate the module without the laptop instead with the use of buttons? Like you will do some coding then attach some buttons to the module that if you'll press, it will automatically send the message?

      Yes, I made a video interfacing a gsm module with a microcontroler and used a motion sensor to make a stand alone alarm. You can modify the code to use a button and send a specific message : ua-cam.com/video/Ph6yolRmD4E/v-deo.html

    • @eye-on-stuff5248
      @eye-on-stuff5248  4 роки тому

      Not familiar with giffgaff. If the sim card works with unlocked gsm devices then it should work with the module. If the your sim card only works with a particular carrier then it will probably not work.

    • @eye-on-stuff5248
      @eye-on-stuff5248  4 роки тому

      First try using your card in a unlocked gsm phone. If it works, then it might work in the sim800.

      If you have not tried it. I would use a regular Tmobile sim card and set it up for pay as you go. Just put maybe $10 on it. Verify the sim card is working on a unlocked gsm phone. You can find them on ebay amazon or even the tmobile store. Make sure your serial connection is good connected to a terminal. AT > Ok. The OK does not mean your sim card service is ok.
      -Tmobile sim card pay as you go
      - check wiring
      - verify serial communication
      - Are you in an area where you have tmobile service? Verify with unlocked phone
      - Is your sim800l bad?
      Hope this helps.

  • @georgewashington421

    SIM800L Problems: Setup:
    1-Checked ATT coverage for 2G at my location. Covered OK
    2-Used SIM card from my phone to make sure it was active and working.
    3-Used a 12Volt, 10 Amp/Hr. battery as a power source.
    4-Used a 3 Amp 'Step-Down' converter, set to 4.1 Volts output.
    5-Used 25mm (about 1") long power leads, 20 gauge, soldered directly to the SIM800L board.
    6-Tested with 2 antennas (the helix included) and an external IPEX Connector Antenna.
    7-Using Putty, communicated with the SIM800L module with AT commands.
    8-Communication was OK, working but NO connection to the ATT network.
    (Did try my bench power supply as well, same results, LED blinking at 1/second-no connection)
    In all cases, when powered up, the SIM800L LED blinked once/second. I then transported the powered up
    SIM800L to within about 150 meters (about 400 feet) of the nearest ATT Cell Tower. I disconnected power to
    the module and reconnected, LED still blinking 1/second. I powered down the module, removed the SIM Card,
    cleaned the contacts and re-inserted the SIM card. STILL within 150M of the ATT Cell tower, I powered the SIM800L up, still blinking at 1/second, waited about 10 minutes, still blinking at 1/second, no connection.
    NOTE: Replaced my SIM card in my phone, all OK.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      AT&T sunset their 2G network years ago. 3G is the oldest standard still in use by them. You would need a T-Mobile (or one of their MVNOs) SIM card, as they are the last 2G provider in the US.

    • @georgewashington421

      @@daynater MY BAD!--I looked again,...OLD MAP! AT&T 2G DEAD, Verizon 2G, DEAD at the end of this month. T-Mobile 2G DEAD in 2020, etc. Any Idea what module to use to duplicate the SIM800L with 3G?

    • @daynater
      @daynater 4 роки тому

      Adafruit has a couple 3G and LTE options for modules. they may be backwards compatible.

      I would try a Tmobile pay as you go or prepaid sim card. You can find them on ebay, Amazon or even a tmobile store. Call 1-800-866-2453 to activate as pay as you go. You can just put $10 on it for testing. You can even buy a sim card by calling the tmobile number.
