  • It's a perfect summer day to head down to the river with the kayak, relax, and soak some bait! On this trip I'm fishing for catfish and brought along a bag of shrimp to use as bait as well as one cut goldeye left over from a previous trip, just in case the fish are really biting!
    Gear used on this trip:
Rods: St Croix Triumph 6'6" MH F amzn.to/3z36Xah
    Reels: Quantum Vapor amzn.to/3v8yLbQ
Line: Power Pro Super Slick V2 40lb amzn.to/3yZx15V
    Leader: Trilene XT 25lb amzn.to/3aUW2aq
    Hook: Gamakatsu Octopus 7/0 amzn.to/3aXUlck
    Anchor: Power Pole Micro amzn.to/3v4kFbK
Net: Ozark Trail brand from Walmart

I had to reply to your comment. About 35 years ago I took my then 3 to 4 year old son fishing in the Turtle River near its entrance into the Red River. I gave him a small jig to toss thinking he would stay out of my hair. Lo and behold he catches a 3 pound catfish and a 10 pound carp. I still have the picture in a frame. And, yes, my son is now twice the fisherman than I ever was.

@@bigwitedelite2900 I totally agree. It also helps to give a great sense of inner-peace. It's the best thing my parents ever introduced me to. Fishing was my biggest passion up until I was fourteen. Back then, I took my only three rods (nice setups acquired through birthdays and Christmases) and gear to a good friends apartment to fish his local pond one day. I left it there so we could fish again in the coming week, but it turns out that his mother was unhappy with his schooling and personal life, so out of the blue she sent him out of state to his grandparents later that week to "visit," but really just used it as an excuse to move him there. She moved out of their apartment while he was at his grandparents and it turns out that my friends little brother lied and told his mom that the rods were his, which I'm sure she knew they weren't because they popped up out of nowhere and he had never owned multiple setups before; so that speaks to their character at the time. But unfortunately I never was able to get them back and I was unable to replace it all at my young age. I found guitar shortly after and a deep passion in that as well, and I followed a path with it instead. I long considered myself a musician first and foremost between the ages of 14 and 30, but after getting back into the sport of fishing for the past 4 years, I've come to understand that I am an angler before a musician. Not all, but much of my music comes from a place of pain that I've experienced in life. Somehow fishing and nature alleviate the weight on my shoulders instead of adding to it or taking me back to a darker place I once was at in life. It fills me with a very pure sense of peace (unless I'm momentarily frustrated from casting into a tree or something, lol). I hope that your stepson finds his love for it and his peace in it as well. And I hope the same for you too, if you haven't already.

@@jamescanady3442 that was a really great thing you said man, excellent story, kind of sucks that kid jipped you out of your stuff, but on the other hand, coming back to fishing and finding out that it's your true calling is of some other NATURE!! I wish to branch out and bring other things along my love of fishing, perhaps my love of cooking. May I one day start this channel, cooking and fishing, maybe even making music. Hope you would be there to watch.😁

Buy a lip gripper to lip grab them. It will help keep your hands from thr spines. I also have a Lindy armored glove that will prevent sharp spines, teeth, and jagged gill plates from ripping my hands in salt water fishing. I haven't seen anyone selling g them for some years but they are useful. The rough armored plate covering the palm area is also great for non slip grabbing smiley fish skin.

Fun fact: Fish, and especially cichlids, in muddier water tend to take on a paler coloration. Fish in clear water will get the more vivid coloration you are used to. I deal with it a lot in the South. That’s also why very pale lures work best in muddy conditions.

Try whole raw shrimp peel on. Soak them in 50/50 white vinegar and vanilla extract for half a day to a whole day. The white vinegar makes the shrimp tougher and harder to fall off your hook and the vanilla extract stays on the shrimp leaving a great scent. It's the only catfish bait I use. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

A beautiful sunny day in that mighty river. It was good luck catching two big cat fish on such a small bait as shrimp avoiding the small fish nibbling at it. I remember my desperation using anchovy as bait for channel catfish: just as it hit the bottom my rod tip would start moving only to catch one small specimen after another.
A most entertaining video with exciting fights by those three marvellous monsters.

If you want to keep smaller fish from stripping the shrimp off the hook, use a piece of cheesecloth or if you have an old aquarium net you can use a piece of that to wrap the shrimp in before putting it on the hook and it will keep small fish from picking it apart. It will also keep the shrimp from being thrown when you catch a large catfish allowing you to catch several fish on one shrimp. You can also use a second piece of line at a swivel above the hook to tie the shrimp in a cheesecloth to and use a small rubber band or a piece of line to hold it against the hook so it swings out of the way after the fish is hooked.

It’s so funny to watch your videos because everything looks so familiar. I’ve been fishing for flatheads in Nebraska with a triumph using the exact same rig as you. I also have the same net.

Fish can actively change their colors. I have a pet Largemouth and Bluegill. When they are over the sand area of the tank their scales turn lighter sometimes white and markings disappear. When they are over the black gravel they turn dark and markings are prominent, like the Largie black line and Bluegill tiger stripes. It happens fast too. I always though it was an environment thing, where over time color changes. But watching pet fish I learned it is an active thing, like Octopuses lol

Nice looking shrimp. Looks like something you could cook in a Delta Airlines bathroom along with some mash potatoes in the middle of the flight using the non-potable bathroom sink water.

Man, I have to say. Watching your video here catching fish on the river really made me miss doing it… I had a kayak for a couple years when I was in the military and I’d go out and fish. I’m gunna have to get back into it. Excellent content keep it up!
