What can anyone add to the well-deserved stellar praises of almost all of the viewers? This is how to present & teach: enthusiastic, clear, right to the point, and utterly fluid - no spacing out & fumbling around looking for a feature. Dan is The Man if want to learn Garage Band!
Hey Dan! I am a senior computer tech with decades of experience. I have experienced every level of presentation, training and marketing of software, hardware, and networking products from both sides: as a trainee & a presenter. Knowing excellent professionalism when I see it is a no-brainer by now. You sir, are at the very top, and all of us know it after seeing this video. So, no kindness involved - just a professional assessment of demo excellence. Thanks for enlightening us all to GarageBand!
I've had an iPad for reading purposes for a few years now and I've been looking into getting started at making music for a while, turns out I don't need to buy anything to have a little bit of music making fun after watching your Garageband videos, thanks a lot for them, very clear and to the point; the perfect introduction.
The great thing about this instructional video is that it gets straight into the nitty gritty without the bla bla bla and listen to me videos that are around.....thanks Dan
What a delightful and informative presentation! I've played with GarageBand and all its tricks for many years and now that I'm an impatient 87 years old -I've given it up. But wait - who's this Dan Baker? Time to dust off the iPad, buy an iRig and have another go! He's got me interested again and he did it in the most informative way I've seen.(Plus he's a Brit and so am I. An Englishman in New York - or in this case California) Thanks Dan!
The other comments are spot-on: Your video is incredibly helpful for someone starting out with GB. It's highly lucid, to-the-point, covers all the bases for those composing only within GB or also adding external signals, keeps its focus on the main question marks in a beginner's head, hints at more in-depth features of later interest and just generally gets you psyched on diving right in. I really appreciate the effort you went to! This was the first GB tutorial, and it might even be the last, for all the rest will follow as learning by doing, I think. Excellent! :-)
Did some stuff using Gband on my iPhone but really like that LARGER version. Spent hours composing with the iPhone connected to the aux of my guitar amp. This is such an expert tutorial illuminating Garage Bands endless possibilities. Thanks!
Thank you so much. I’ve been watching other tutorials and feeling confused.Your delivery is immaculate, so clear and well paced, you’re a really good teacher, I’ve learnt so much.
Dan ....I work for a music retail store ....your video is such a clear and simple demo of Garageband ...I am going to point customers to this video for a great intro and example of GarageBand...Thanks ...!
Here's an example of using only the internal mic of the iPad to record - something quite different from what most GB users would do... ua-cam.com/video/ji7lOBnskvI/v-deo.html
Help! I just listened HALF an HOUR to an instruction video - and wished it was even longer :-) ! Amazingly good explained - and clearly brought by a great musician, not just an iPad nerdThank you a great deal sir!
What a great tutorial - made for people who know absolutely nothing about GarageBand. I learned more from this video than the other 10 I have watched, combined.
This is THE best demonstration of Garage Band on iPad I have seen. And that's coming from someone who produces a lot of videos about Garage Band on iPhone and iPad! Great job!
Thanks Mr Pete, that was a great help. What I would like to know is how can i record my own playing of my instruments, banjo, mandolin & acoustic guitar and maybe a vocal to all finish on one track as the finished song. Im not very good at this stuff.
Hey Sean. I have a couple of video series over on my channel that show the recording process in detail which you might be interested in. This series shows the full process of recording a single with acoustic guitars and vocals which might be a good place to start - ua-cam.com/play/PLc8Xg_23Wa55ZTU236y69p30OJLqawDnz.html
Hi Dan. I’m a Native American Flute player and want to use GarageBand to create my own backtracks then use my mic to record my flute song. Do I just use the “vocals” setting. I’m totally brand new to GarageBand and have been watching your tutorials. Blessings!! Tamar
+Tamar Porras hi there and sorry for the delay in getting back to you! Recording any instrument such as flute, violin and piano, I would use the "clean" setting, which you'll find in "studio" and under the "fun" pane...
I stumbled on this while looking for something else, and I'd like to say this is one of the most succinct and thorough instructional vids I've ever seen on UA-cam period. Even though it wasn't what I was looking for, I couldn't stop watching! Great job!
BRILLIANT video mate, I am an advanced Pro Tools user with a lot of hardware outboard gear but always looking for a simple songwriting tool and I’ve toy’d with GB over the years & now circling back and this now fits my needs perfectly cos of how clear & concise your video is, Thanks mate , cheers and keep up the EXCELLENT work!!
Dan Baker, You have just made my day, I have been so frustrated and angry with the iPad version of GarageBand . ....even the touch screen and adding additional bars freaked me out. I ended up jumping from GarageBand to Logic Pro, but I always loved the simplicity of GarageBand, and here it has been, free on my iPad, being ignored. You have totally nailed this demo, It’s perfect in every sense, and you have set me free and made me grin. So many ideas in my head get missed when I shackle to my IMac. Thank you so very much!
Just decided to try out Garage Band on an iPad 4 after knowing about it for years but not having a go for some reason. I have no idea what took me so long but I’m very glad I came across your video Dan - great orientation for getting going fast on a tune or two. Thanks so much.
Holy smoking garage band instruments. You are my latest hero. Thank you a million times over for making a no nonsense easy to follow video. I was given an i pad for my work and was oh so excited to use the app for my clients and song writing (music therapist) Unfortunately no one could explain how all of this works. I was able to get around the basics, but you have filled in the blanks. Yay. Now I will be able to jam like I've been wanting thanks to this video. Kudos to you. :)
Hi Dan. I learned a lot just by watching your video. I purchased the Ipad Mini 4 with 128 gigs of memory to exclusively use on my DJI drone. Then I discovered GarageBand and instantly fell in love with the sounds especially the Hammond B3. I loved it so much I purchased a Midi Plus keyboard. After watching your video, I'm inspired to purchase the Irig interface to record my guitars and bass. Cheers, Mate and thank you. I just subscribed.
Dan Baker, I can't believe you're not a musician yet you just taught me everything I need to know to record one of my songs -- in 22 minutes! Fabulous. I'm a subscriber now. Much appreciated. Thank you!
This is, simply, GREAT! Thank you and kudos for all your hard work. First discovered Dan Baker just searching to learn about Garageband but now see that you offer so much more on music theory, harmony, feel, sound and melody...In addition to your obvious talent as a musician, your balance as a teacher between structure and detail and the encouragement to go with what feels or sounds right is excellent. I’m a sax player with no facility really on a multi-tonal instrument but now you have helped me see how Garageband can open a whole new world of education and enjoyment. Apple should have you on retainer. Thanks again!
Absolutely marvelous - I am not a musician and have never played with GarageBand - couldn't think or a reason to use it. But now I think I would love to have a mess around and see if I can make something - who knows - I might even be alright (doubtful). Thank you for opening a new world to me.
Fantastic tutorial! Not just a great start for GarageBand. This shows how constructing the song can be approached and the advantages the program allows. The pop up text adds another layer of info. Well done, Sir! I am your newest raving fan.
Thank you so much - this is a brilliantly easy tutorial to follow for total novices like me. It’s lovely to find an accomplished musician who is able to relate to people who have no knowledge and teach accordingly. I am really pleased I found this after being so confused about Garage Band.👏
Soooo much fun. We have the ability to make professional sounding music with an iPad, a relatively inexpensive audio interface, a mic and a midi controller. GarageBand is a wonderful gift. Thanks for the video. It will definitely motivate people who were previously intimidated with music apps to give it a go, and that is cool. Have you done a video on how to set up an iPad rig at home? You would be good at that because you explain things well and speak clearly. Its enjoyable to watch your video, which is so important.
Tq Tq Tq :-) My son presented me an iPad today and the first thing I did was to download garageband. Your tutorial is very informative and look forward to more from you. Am getting started :-D
I have only just got in to Garageband on the ipad!! And its bloody brilliant! Im finding it a bit of a steep learning curve, but your fantastic tutorial has helped a lot ,Many Thanks!
Very good demonstration for Garage band on iPad very understandable and spot on... best tutorial I have seen.. you are very patient and really good at making music
in the autoplay section, under each of the 4 variations you can have more sub variations based on whether you use 1, 2 or 3 fingers to play... that gives you a total of 12 autoplay variations and that a lot of options!! Superb!
Thanks so much Dan, I’ve just followed your instructions and now I’ve recorded the basis of a song. This morning I knew nothing about Garageband at all. I’m checking to see if you’ve recorded anything else. You’re clear, concise and knowledgeable- and clearly love Garageband! Rob
Hi Rob-glad it helped! I've done a couple of other GarageBand videos as well: they should be on my playlist "GarageBand iOS". I'm planning on recording a full song or two using nothing but Garageband. Feel free to share my vid via Facebook! Cheers. Dan
Thanks Dan, bought an iPad exactly for this reason but have been slightly confused about GB, you’ve added the clarity required and will be building tracks immediately after this demo
Wow ! That’s one of the best learning videos i’ve seen about GB on IPad ! Thanks for sharing. I shared your video on my fb page cause i’m sure it’ll be usefull for a lot of my fb friends.
Thanks. That was really clear and inspiring. One thing that makes me chuckle is that my version of GarageBand never looks like the demo's I see on UA-cam. I think that might be something to do with the age of my iPad (2012 or thereabouts) which must mean I haven't had an update of iOS which allows the more recent features of GB itself. I have recently bought an iMac and Logic Pro X which is great but I might just go and get myself a new iPad that works as the simplicity and fun of what you demonstrated is quite infectious. Many thanks. Good luck with growing your subscriber base. You deserve an audience, Dan.
Really like and appreciate your GB for iPad tutorial. Very helpful and useful. Easy to follow. Your tutorial can be used to create most songs of different genre. Thanks.
Thanks, the level you put this on are amazing, a digital person learns about terms in music in an easy way, a musician learns about the World of making things digital, makes me really motivated to struggle on with my journey to learn to play and record, Thank you!!
Just got a secondhand i-pad to explore Garage Band (after seeing it used on a friend's Mac). Thanks so much for this tutorial. It really helped me familiarise myself with the possibilities of this handy musical notepad.
Greatest music making instrument on the planet, vince clarke would agree too, this is the fastest way from your brain to the speakers by a mile, i bought a new ipad 8th gen just for this, its a masterpiece, and your skills sir are amazing.
One of the most useful demo videos I’ve seen! I like that it’s fast paced, yet has ample depth. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and expertise.

Nice instruction. GarageBand makes it easy to enjoy creating music, and you’ve followed that lead in showing how to use GarageBand. You also tossed in quite a few cool recording techniques such as double tracking vocals, and covered some of the most important to know features of GarageBand for anyone wanting to start out doing things the right way. Very complete and easy to understand. ✔️
That is genuinely the best and most useful tutorial I've seen. For anything. I'll still have to watch it every day for a year before I can record one minute of music but that's because I'm useless. Great stuff though.
I'm not overstating when I say that this video is of supreme usefulness to me! - As a complete 'planet ios' noobie I can only say THANK YOU! - All this new tech / world of apps is deeply overwhelming! O~O (but _good god_ I can see the possibilities!) this vid helps me to (at least partially) overcome this sheer cliff-face of novelty, on my new platform.
Thanks man, good basic overview, I like how you formatted this video, and how you explain things, throwing a few pro tips in here and there. Appreciate that
Hello, this is Hari from India. Wow, what a wonderful video explaining everything everything luring me to compose, sing and on and on. very very great job. fentastic in deed.
Many thanks Dan, solid video and no pointless procrastination. I love the strings too their were two other screen gestures you can use. When if you slide up ,then move your finger in like a circle or a wave pattern you can increase the power of the note. Also a dashing slide give you combo of bow and pluck, which is really cool when you combo with other moves.
Excellent! It's such a great application and I know so many who use it to record extensive arrangements for all sorts of styles. It's (in my opinion) the best free app that Apple have ever done...
Amazing video. I'm not a musician, but I was playing around with Garage Band on my iPhone and wanted to learn how it works as it seems very complex. Or should I say full of features that I don't understand. Your video really helped me understand it better. Thanks!
Great video! Everything I've ever recorded has been done in garageband. I finished a song yesterday using automation properly for the first time. Really happy with the results!
This is probably the clearest and best organized Garageband tutorial on UA-cam. Thank you!
What can anyone add to the well-deserved stellar praises of almost all of the viewers? This is how to present & teach: enthusiastic, clear, right to the point, and utterly fluid - no spacing out & fumbling around looking for a feature. Dan is The Man if want to learn Garage Band!

I don't personally use GB on iPad (just on my computer) but I enjoyed your tutorial so much that I watched the entire video. Great stuff Dan!
Like most of the people, I must say great job, humbly presented. Covered all the bases. A real help for me to get started. God bless you man.

Very, very helpful. Well done. I just started tinkering with GB a few days ago and you just answered many of my questions. Thanks so much.

Hello Dan.. Thanks for your very good lessons! You are an very good theacher!!!!
Greatest music making instrument on the planet, vince clarke would agree too, this is the fastest way from your brain to the speakers by a mile, i bought a new ipad 8th gen just for this, its a masterpiece, and your skills sir are amazing.

Fantastic demonstration Dan. I didn't know 95% of the things you've demonstrated. Wow.

Initially, I thought I was the only one watching this video but a BLACK cat was interested as well😸🙀😹
You are a very smart musician sir. Thank you for the tutorial.
Thank you for this! As other commenters have said, great communication throughout. Didn’t expect to watch all 31 minutes but it was pretty easy.

That is genuinely the best and most useful tutorial I've seen. For anything. I'll still have to watch it every day for a year before I can record one minute of music but that's because I'm useless. Great stuff though.
Dude you are my hero thank you for such a clear explanation of how to use garage band.
Really clear, no time wasted, thanks Dan.

Wow! Thanks bruh...really informative!
Thankyou so much for the Demo Dan. I am going stir crazy to write and record.
Excellent! It's such a great application and I know so many who use it to record extensive arrangements for all sorts of styles. It's (in my opinion) the best free app that Apple have ever done...
Actually one of the best tutorials on youtube for anything!!
One of the best demonstrations ever... well done!
Thanks Dan. Clear, inspiring & reminds me of what a great app it is. Almost prefer it on the iPad to the mac.......
Thank you this is by far the best explanation
Double like for this video...
Super informative and helpful...
Great job! Easy to follow and done with a sense of humour which helps....and the cat made it through! Thanks again!
Amazing video. I'm not a musician, but I was playing around with Garage Band on my iPhone and wanted to learn how it works as it seems very complex. Or should I say full of features that I don't understand. Your video really helped me understand it better. Thanks!
Hi Nigel-glad this helped and it’s great fun even if you’re not sure about using parts of it...
Awesome breakdown. Been using GB in anger since the lockdown and this video showed me some features I have missed or overlooked. Thank you!
Thanks David - glad the video helped!
Great video! Everything I've ever recorded has been done in garageband. I finished a song yesterday using automation properly for the first time. Really happy with the results!
Isn’t it just great?
