This is inconsistent though, in Silent Hill 1 Harry Sees Alessa's Silent Hill not his own version, and the monsters (most of them) are based on Alessa's suffering. It could be explained as Alessa is still alive in SH1 but i find it inconsistent still. (Silent Hill 2 is not related to the main story and Alessa has nothing to do with James, Angela, Eddie, or Laura being there and they were called to Silent Hill for very specific and personal reasons) I think this is more a play on what Vincent says early on "I'm quite sane" and then being surprised when heather thinks of the creatures as monsters. In the making of this game, they suggested that it could mean one person saw them as monsters, where as another could possibly see them as human beings
Silent Hill is the only series I know where the terrible, awkward, poorly-paced voice acting actually works in its favour. Interactions with other characters are really unsettling. Everybody seems so unhinged. Every sentence is clogged with inappropriate emphasis and intonation, that the speaker seems like a sociopath fumbling to mimic human emotion.
SH2/3 have really well directed voice acting, actually. Check out the redone voice acting in the HD version for examples of poor voice acting, flat, poorly directed anime-esque voice acting. The characters really come alive in these games, you feel Vincent getting off on every word he's saying, it's almost infectious. Don't mistake this for an accident, the actor was directed to act this way (scenes were acted out in mocap several times over until the emotion of the scene was nailed), these are tells of who Vincent is as a character. Vincent *is* unhinged, he *is* sociopathic, and you get that through his performance.
@@ALocalClown I completely agree with you. I do not consider Silent Hill's voice acting is terrible, awkward and poorly-paced, not at all. Just check the mouth movements and the facial expressions of Vincent, it fits well to the voice, the tone and the pronunciation. @@Talisguy Actually, it deliberately aimed for a David Lynch direction. The director of the first game was a notable fan of David Lynch and wanted to incorporate Lynch's influence.
Everyone speaks as if Vincent asked, "They looked like monsters to you?" deliberately, but my interpretation of the infamous line is that Vincent was genuinely confused. That isn't to say of course, Heather was going around blasting innocent people. We already know everyone's experience of Silent Hill is different (for example, Angela seeing a burning world.) Vincent, as part of the cult, could be honestly seeing something completely different than monsters - Perhaps angelic beings. Lost in his own head, he blurts out, "They looked like monsters to you?" Only then does he remember Heather must be having a completely different experience, and so backpedals as best he can.
I didn't understand it as it actually being a joke, I thought he was telling the truth when he implied the 'monsters' may not be as they appear to Heather, then saying it was a joke to fuck with her/your head further.
i think that the "it was a joke" part was just the japanese writers not being good at English and trying to make a line where he would try to change the subject without going deep into it.
This scared me worse than anything else in these games. One of the most effective examples of psychological horror in history. That one line sticks in my mind all the time
Favorite scene in the series I think, definitely first or second. Vincent breaking the fourth wall essentially attacking the player for enjoying gunning down the 'monsters' while at the same calling into question the exact nature of the Silent Hill monsters and what they really are is just great.
Well, he was supposed to be a shady character with his own intentions. Even now, after finishing this game years after, I'm not sure if the player was ever meant to trust him. I still don't after multiple playthroughs. I think the lack of facial animation was meant to display that but maybe I'm also reading too much into it because it's Silent Hill and just about everything in Silent Hill has significance. lol
This is one of the greatest throwaway lines of all time cuz it clearly shakes heather but then he's like "haha it's joke". But at the same time those are some pretty heavy accusations to throw at people as a set up to a joke.
Vincent has such a streak of sadism in him. Check his smile at 02:49, he knows he's gotten to her just like he got to Claudia when he talked about her father. And right after flirting with her too. What a bastard, what a sexy, sexy bastard...
Sadistic is a strong word, more like a sociopath. He doesnt like getting hot and sweaty like he said ;) he prefers stuff to be verbally and mentally twisted which sadistic personalities are more... Physical
Schrodinger's Vincent. A person who when they ask you weather or not they looked like monsters to you decides weather or not they were joking based on the persons reaction.
i like how the characters from the 3rd game have a counter part from the first game heather = harry (they're both mason's who are the protaganist) douglas = cybil (they're the only ones who could be considered a true friend by the end of the game, and they're both police) vincent = kaufman (both are shady people who are related to the order, but rebel because of their own desire) claudia = dahlia (both are crazy old cultists who want to birth god)
Now with the "they look like monsters to you?" line, I keep thinking... what if those monsters are the poeple that got sucked into the Silent Hill world and couldn't escape their own traumas? And since monsters change their appearance based of each person's deepest fears and traumas, Heather just sees them as monsters. Well, I think no matter how the person sees them, they are monsters, BUT, I think that they might, have some vestiges of their previous lives as human beings, small hints of memories. I just imagine, that Vincent found this world fascinating, because perhaps, under the scary and horrifying visuals, there are tragic stories to be found. Like in the Castlevania series of netflix. Isaac started to get to know each of the demons he controled, that were once humans. I think, that perhaps the monsters that we see in silent hill, were human souls once before.
Although a lot of people may believe he isn't joking, I personally think Vincent is just to mess with Heather. Before he makes that claim he seems pretty agitated with Heather's attitude and the whole time she's calling him insane. He isn't exactly all right in the head, even if he claims to be, so I think its in character for him to make such a sick joke toward her. Also, since he and Claudia are both from The Order, he may not believe the monsters are monsters, but rather servants or citizens of God. It's why he asks if they look like monsters. Maybe not because he sees them different physically, but religiously. Someone who doesn't follow The Order such as Heather would be lead to believe they're strange, harmful creatures while Vincent might see these things in a better light. After all, he is devout, so I don't think even he would appreciate someone snuffing out monsters lives and treating these things as if they were disposable enemies.
@@provokator-provocateur7603the fact that he seemingly was trying to make her think she was killing real people. Besides it's just a line that gets a lot of discussion because the implications of it could be pretty big depending on if it was a joke or not.
Well to be fair on his part he can both be joking and not at the same time. It really depends on your definition on what a monster is. Vincent himself haven't done any of the "dirty work" because he was quite sane and knows doing dirty work will cause people to have sins inside their body.
I like this scene as it is a good example of something. In the franchise the protagonists are unreliable narrators. Throughout the game things try to break through the protagonist's perception bias, but those things are seen as a threat so that they can be avoided. ua-cam.com/video/tkYtflr1KsM/v-deo.html
I mean Vincent did technically say he was quite sane as well, he had no sins. What "dirty work" did he do? Create a church to bring in more cultists? He acts all innocent but secretly we know he isn't the greatest person or even the nice guy. He is flawed but he accepts he isn't flawless, making him a really interesting character in what every human wants; power and control.
Mi theory it’s that Heather, James and Harry saw creatures as “monsters” and people like Dahlia, Claudia, Vincent saw creatures as “angelic beings” Of course Heather wasn’t going around killing regular people… right? Well, In SH3 there was two enemies that you could probably be human and those were Leonard and the Missionary… of course that’s just my assumption. But Heather saw them as monsters.
He seems to be extremely antisocial too so he probably doesn't like people so his monsters would be society that he wants to escape from by ushering in the birth of God
Imo I think that he see the monsters in Silent Hill like people, like Eddy in Silent Hill 2, maybe he is afraid of the judgement of strangers and that's why the city encarnate people to make him suffer.
Although what sins has he suffered? He hasn't sinned for anything and the way he thinks and believes makes him see that every judgement is okay to an extent (especially knowing he is talking to a girl who kills "monsters" and is surprised she doesnt see him as a monster, yet) He knows he is weak and so he is worried for his self being while knowing what Heather has deep inside of her and what powers that Claudia has (most likely coming from her sins.)
It's disappointing that they didn't properly follow through with the "They look like monsters to you" idea . The bad ending of the game would have made even more sense
I always imagined this line as a throwback to the second game, where things in Silent Hill change depending on the individual. No true meaning within the context of SH3 narrative
Umm well I think what he meant by "They look like monster's to you?"is that she could just be imagining them you know made them up herself she is Alessa after all she might of created them since when you go in Alessa's room you find a notebook which has drawing's of the monster's in it which they say Alessa used to draw when she was little but that's just my opinion. They never said that they weren't monster's though you never know.I love this clip even though Vincent is a little crazy!
Discovered the silent hill series pretty recently ( I was two yo when this game came out) and finished silent hill 3 a few months ago. I really liked Vincent's personality, creepy but interesting.
Everyone sees something different in silent hill with the fog that surrounds it,it effects everyone with their mind that effects what they see differently.Anyone who comes into contact with the fog in silent effects their mind on what they see.You might see something totally different then what they see out of fear. And he wasn't joking when he said they look like monsters to you.Eddie in silent hill 2 thinks everyone is laughing at him when in reality its no one thier.
I think he was telling the truth. He might have been mainly referring to the Missionary and Scraper enemies. They have the most humanoid features(aside from the nurses) and The Missionary was able to follow direct orders. Also, if you look close, the Missionary is wearing what looks like cargo pants lol(may not mean anything but its still a funny feature and may hint at something else). I think the missionary and scraper enemies are deranged cult members ordered to kill Heather on sight, but she sees them as monsters. Vincent said it was just a joke in order to keep her focused on the “mission” once he saw her reaction. I also don’t think Vincent or Douglas sees any monsters. Douglas was left alone, wounded and unable to walk yet was unscathed when Heather returned. Perhaps another Cult member caught him on his blind side and broke his leg and Claudia didn’t kill him because he was of no threat. And Vincent is walking around too calm and smug. I think he knew Claudia sent a cult member to “test” Heather. Heather killed the cult member. Then she makes it too the chapel thats over run with other deranged cult members. Vincent witnesses her killing a few and “step on them, snuffing out their lives”. Then sees her and makes his comment. I do believe the other creatures are in fact monsters that only Heather(and maybe Claudia) can see.
Coming back from silent hill back yet again wishing it can get a revival Remake or possibly a Reboot Really missed how dark times and lovely music and Games were back then. Being instruMental from games like this and disturbing.
Would've been a great twist if they weren't monsters. That's such an "oh snap" line, to waste it on a joke seems sad. =( Maybe one day they will do something like that. Old Man Logan kind of had a moment like that "we're your friends" that line was just :-0 for me
Silent Hill 2 established that everyone sees the "monsters" differently, and the entire series has implied that some people may experience these events without seeing anything at all. Seeing as Vincent is a priest, it's possible that he was seeing them as angels or something.
It's not a joke, monsters can be visual and behavioral label. Even in his tone with: "Don't worry it's just a joke" a sort of condescending response treating her like an ignorant, naive child. Also someone as twisted as himself may not see them as monsters in a figurative sense. I don't think it's a case of a movie like "LAST SHIFT" where the person sees humans as monsters but no-one else can see. SH's manifestations are proven to be seen by other people, but parts of people's world have been hidden - like the symbolic flames of hell on the staircase with Angela. But this scene also shows how smart dialogue can help form so many discussions. Just an amazing franchise - well was.

Everyone speaks as if Vincent asked, "They looked like monsters to you?" deliberately, but my interpretation of the infamous line is that Vincent was genuinely confused. That isn't to say of course, Heather was going around blasting innocent people.
We already know everyone's experience of Silent Hill is different (for example, Angela seeing a burning world.)
Vincent, as part of the cult, could be honestly seeing something completely different than monsters - Perhaps angelic beings.
@@eduardopupuconpretty dope argument
I like how development saved the best tracks for whenever Vincent shows up
-They looked like monsters to you?
Damn, if he had only say that... The entire history of Silent Hill would have changed a little bit.
There is a reason the protagonists all need weapons to get around and the Order doesn't...
Vincent is underrated, all his scenes are great.
Best scene in any video game I’ve ever played.
indeed
this game still look pretty good, what an achievement.
not only in graphics...this scene the game itself is a masterpiece
“It’s not uncommon for people to worship the same god and still disagree.”
He has a point.
My favourite Silent Hill quote.
Hmm Vincent's face has nice facial animation.
Well, he was supposed to be a shady character with his own intentions. Even now, after finishing this game years after, I'm not sure if the player was ever meant to trust him.
I still don't after multiple playthroughs.
I think the lack of facial animation was meant to display that but maybe I'm also reading too much into it because it's Silent Hill and just about everything in Silent Hill has significance. lol
I just realized this comment is 15 years old. Considering the time your comment is indeed appropriate. Bro are you still there?

Oh the music!..
Some of the best in any game. In fact I think this has the best music in the SH series... and thats saying alot. SH 4 is close 2nd.
@@heyitsdazy do you know which track this is?
@@dylanjordan4747 The track is called 'Maternal Heart' by the genius Akira Yamaoka. :)
Silent Hill is nothing without Yamaoka's music.
2:22, i just keep feeling that he actually talking to me...
They actually made him have somewhat of a lazy eye, so he constantly looks like he's looking at the player.
This is one of the greatest throwaway lines of all time cuz it clearly shakes heather but then he's like "haha it's joke". But at the same time those are some pretty heavy accusations to throw at people as a set up to a joke.
I dont see what is so heavy about that.
@@provokator-provocateur7603 you wouldn't
@@spike120 If it applied to you then I would see nothing wrong.
@@provokator-provocateur7603it's not that it's super heavy or deep, it's just a good line, that's all.
THEY LOOK LIKE MONSTERS TO YOU?
this line stuck with me because of what it implies for the entire franchise and the other characters in the games
its just a prank bro
Or is it?
*Vsauce theme*
Just kiddin bruh
Do they look like monsters to you? Don't worry it's just a joke.
This is brilliant writing.
ikr it made me gasp as well with heather after he said that
They looked like monsters to you?
Vincent has such a streak of sadism in him. Check his smile at 02:49, he knows he's gotten to her just like he got to Claudia when he talked about her father. And right after flirting with her too. What a bastard, what a sexy, sexy bastard...
He's an extremely unsettling character
@@SamsarasArt he is! And I still think so, even though I'm 34 now.

Vincent to Eddie: "Pizzas? They look like pizzas to you?"
When you realize this video was posted 15 years ago.
3:05 that face still creeps me the hell out.
i love the music in the silent hill series
He reminds so much of Lezard Valeth,well...They both are sadistic as fuck lol.
Sadistic is a strong word, more like a sociopath. He doesnt like getting hot and sweaty like he said ;) he prefers stuff to be verbally and mentally twisted which sadistic personalities are more... Physical
I love how the music changes right when he starts his lines about being a bad person
Schrodinger's Vincent. A person who when they ask you weather or not they looked like monsters to you decides weather or not they were joking based on the persons reaction.
it's joke
i like how the characters from the 3rd game have a counter part from the first game
heather = harry
(they're both mason's who are the protaganist)
douglas = cybil
(they're the only ones who could be considered a true friend by the end of the game, and they're both police)
vincent = kaufman
(both are shady people who are related to the order, but rebel because of their own desire)
claudia = dahlia
(both are crazy old cultists who want to birth god)
No
"Whichever you like" 💀
he's such an extraordinary character
That line of dialogue...they look like monsters to you?
I dont see what is sick about that joke.
@@provokator-provocateur7603 you wouldn't
@@provokator-provocateur7603the fact that he seemingly was trying to make her think she was killing real people.
Besides it's just a line that gets a lot of discussion because the implications of it could be pretty big depending on if it was a joke or not.
god this guys line delivery is so damn good
His stilted phrasing to make HER say the punchline + pushing up his glasses to express intellectual superiority = conniving prank on his part.
Well to be fair on his part he can both be joking and not at the same time. It really depends on your definition on what a monster is. Vincent himself haven't done any of the "dirty work" because he was quite sane and knows doing dirty work will cause people to have sins inside their body.
They were monsters, Douglas said he saw them too towards the start of silent hill 3
Christ that joke XD screw you, man. God I love this VA's delivery of lines
What if he wasn't joking? Remember the haunted Tour?
Bruh, that voice acting and facial impressions...
*Monsters...? They look like monsters to you?*
Mi theory it’s that Heather, James and Harry saw creatures as “monsters” and people like Dahlia, Claudia, Vincent saw creatures as “angelic beings”
Of course Heather wasn’t going around killing regular people… right? Well, In SH3 there was two enemies that you could probably be human and those were Leonard and the Missionary… of course that’s just my assumption. But Heather saw them as monsters.
He seems to be extremely antisocial too so he probably doesn't like people so his monsters would be society that he wants to escape from by ushering in the birth of God
2:52 what you're here for
You're welcome
I'm actually here for 2:03 😏😏
Imo I think that he see the monsters in Silent Hill like people, like Eddy in Silent Hill 2, maybe he is afraid of the judgement of strangers and that's why the city encarnate people to make him suffer.
Actually the monsters snap in two.
It's just a joke.
"They looked like monsters to you?"
This make me think of what will he say if i wouldnt kill anyone
2:42 love how he said "step"

@TURTWIGFAN64 Yeah, she smiled. And then he should have added "the power to SUCK" and went on a rant about how much she fails at life.

Ah the Conversation
I just turned the same age as this..
I heard the true ending was only unlocked by not killing any monsters, but I havent finished it like that so can't say for sure.

She does ser leonard as a monster in dark world and he is a human.
Vincent is the spitting image of Dominic Diamond from the first series of UK video game show GamesMaster
Yet ironically enough I find him the most human in the third silent hill in comparison to others.
Would've been a great twist if they weren't monsters. That's such an "oh snap" line, to waste it on a joke seems sad. =( Maybe one day they will do something like that.

@@SamsarasArt yeah that´s the best plot twist in videogames you don´t even know if this is a joke
Silent Hill 2 established that everyone sees the "monsters" differently, and the entire series has implied that some people may experience these events without seeing anything at all. Seeing as Vincent is a priest, it's possible that he was seeing them as angels or something.
14 años de este video es de los videos mas viejos que e visto en youtube
