In this video I will take you on an 18 month journey of planting switch grass with NO equipment, except a backpack sprayer💦 and some herbicide; Although a tedious process, getting a good stand of switchgrass on your property can be utilized for deer bedding, access screening, foodplot screening, and just help restore some native grasses on your land that small game animals will also love.
Siwtchgrass , A perennial grass that will stand between five and 8 feet tall makes for great applications around your property. This is a low maintenance grass that will come back year after year if established correctly that requires low maintenance to maintain.

Happy to be motivating !! My tilled switch didn’t come in as great as the two previous areas I did without tilling . It’s a bit of a long process but worth the outcome if you can establish a good stand in the right locations around your property 👍🏼👍🏼

I did a test "living fence" at the homestead simultaneous to my lackluster attempt at Switch grass at the hunting ranch. With clay soils here at home (compared to sandy soils at the ranch) and perhaps lousy seed source from the coop, I pretty much had to mow it like lawn the first year to chop off the weed and grass competition. Finally, established in year 2, a treatment of 2-4D really helped to whack the broadleaf weeds from it while not hurting the grasses. I finally let it grow out to seed heads this year! Maybe 4.5 feet tall. The hunting property needs another year of TLC to catch up, but I'll be MUCH better prepared with new areas burned-down throughout this summer (like in your vid) -- and hopefully with the investment in better quality seed purity.

Great video. Start to finish. Question: when the switch is 5 foot tall and dead in spring do you need to mow it? Or just leave it and new grass grows in year after year. So no additional maintenance? Thx!!
Optimal to burn 🔥every 3-5 years ..
Other option to mow with bag or rake or bag away cuttings b/c after a couple years the old growth will start to choke out itself and needs to be removed to maintain…. Thank you for watching and commenting 👨🏻👍🏼👍🏼
The hard seed switchgrass needs to go through that stratification process. Jeff's switchgrass blends are mostly soft seed switchgrass and can be seeded in spring/early summer for growth that year if you control the weeds before seeding it. Can do your 1st 2 sprayings then seed it.
You are def right about that, but I wasn’t sure I was gunna use His seed ($$$), so I had do prepare for anything .

Bad information you have been getting. It’s actually dormant seed .

I call it “switch” grass because down south it don’t grow well and you’ll wind up “switching” to something else. 😂
The WHS seed makes a southern Switchgrass blend of seed . Maybe that would work better in your area 🤔❓❓

Thanks for commenting . , micro parcel just 28.5 acres . I hunt on it . Gotta up my hunting video game, I get so focused on hunting I end up not filming , or getting footage I want when I do . Def focus a bit more on the habitat part of hunting cause that’s a 10 months a year part of it,. I will def be filming more , so stay tuned .
