I’m 72 and still working carrying equipment up and down stairs and vertical ladders. I’ve had torn meniscus surgery on both knees many years ago. I experience more pain on stairs and ladders and you’ve given me hope that leg extensions may help. I keep my weight down. Do you have any other advice for me? Thanks!!

i totally agree with the comparison between leg extension and the Sportmovement. But the main reason why i would call it "not funktional" is because we don't have to stablilise our knee. the leg is fixed proximal and distal.
people might say now "legpress would be the same thing". But there we have a movement in three joints which makes the knee unstable.
pls correct me if i'm wrong (im still lerning). But that would be my reason to call it non funktional.
we have less fasttwitch use which results in less neural innervation
(im sorry if my english is not the best; im German)

Me too. With that same pain, by doing squats, I don't feel it. I think it's because there's no tension with the leg in a straight position, just like in normal life when you're standing.

Nothing wrong with it. At the right time it’s a great rehab exercise to rebuild quad strength in isolation and, as mentioned, without possible compensation

Long time viewer, first time poster here. The first section of the video regarding forces is very interesting. However, no mention is made of patellar tracking, which is the main reason why one should not do open chain leg extensions especially if you have patellar femoral issues.
You make the point that ground reaction forces during single leg squats and cutting differ in their direction, I agree. However, as leg extensions are open chain, they by definition have no ground reaction force (the force exerted by the ground on a body in contact with it.) Also cutting is a complicated closed chain exercise involving ankle knee and hip. Single leg squats, although quite different to cutting are also closed chain involving ankle knee hip. Single leg extensions are open chain and only involve the knee so it's very very different to cutting. The similarities of forces between cutting and knee extensions is not clear from the diagram you guys show with the arrows.
If your patient is avoiding using their quads during squatting then analyse what they are doing wrong and give them tips on how to do it differently or adapt the squat allowing for pain in a functional closed chain fashion. Leg extensions are not likely to be the answer for compensatory movements.

I agree. I had patellar tracking issues and my knees became much worse with leg extensions. I kept doing them because the physios insisted but they hurt my knees. Not all bodies are the same. Isometric squats was what helped me in the end.

Are you set up correctly on the leg extension machine? It is crucial the pivot point of the leg extension is directly inline with your pivot point (knee joint).

Queen of tennis ? Leg extensioon helps cutting ? Wrong. Wish you knew what you were talking about. Thats like saying. A bench press helps you box better instead of boxing. Wanna cut better ? Go cut. As no one CUTS. sitting on THEIR A >> WITH THEIR FEET IN THE AIR. LMFAO
