Even with the atrocities the Daleks have committed taken into account, there is still something genuinely kind of horrifying about the coldness and the mercilessness with which the Seventh Doctor goes about goading this one into killing itself. This to me is the moment the Seventh Doctor became the Seventh Doctor.

Imagine how hype this would be if you were watching the entire show between Dead Planet and Remenberace of The Daleks.
This story isn't just the finale to the Davros and Civil War Arches, but the true finale for the classic Daleks.

Nine goads a unarguably evil, deadly enemy to suicide and the whole bloody episode is about how the Doctor is supposedly “going too far”. With Rose enacting some pie in the sky redemption of it as if it’s some fallen creature instead of a manufactured demon. I always hated that, even if the episode is still entertaining. Seven coldly manipulates a lone survivor of said race of manufactured demons into killing itself by telling it the truth which it can never accept after gleefully wiping out all of its kind, and nobody bats an eyelid. Perhaps because it was written in a more realistic and less wimpy time when people were capable of distinguishing between the redeemable and the irredeemable, and didn’t see heroes having power over evil as somehow being a bad thing. It’s such a shame that Seven got cancelled and instead we got the revived series which, though it undoubtedly has some great moments is utter weak sauce compared to what we could have got with Seven.

Thematically speaking, this is supposed to represent the end for them. The Daleks have warred on for centuries and its now come to a point where there’s only two factions left. One led by the creator, the other led by the supreme.
The Imperial Daleks want to return to Skaro, and establish an empire with the Hand of Omega, and the renegades want to stop that and have the power for themselves to keep the Daleks pure.
The Doctor, having learned his lesson from Genesis has now decided its time to end it once and for all.
If this is not the last Dalek, then his entire moral conundrum of the story is pointless. He’s changed over the years, and arrived at the place where he feels decisions should be made. The Daleks must die, completely.

I agree. New Who and Old Who are not connected directly as far as I'm concerned. They take place in the same multiverse, but are two different realities. As far as the Classic Who universe goes, this was the end of the Daleks. They finally became so xenophobic they turned inward and basically killed each other off. They hoped to rule the universe, and instead ended up as dust on a supposedly primitive, inferior world.

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink Рік тому +9

It's not a question of logic. It's simultaneously controlling itself + the battle computer while trying to comprehend that a literal Dalek genocide has taken place, thus it no longer has any purpose. If anything, it enforces the idea that Dalek's are not incapable of emotion, because the Doctor is simply reminding the Supreme that it's the last Dalek on earth, no help, no hope, no rescue, and not even the "impure" survived -- all while it is desperately trying to regain the time controller from Mike/Ace. Even if it got the TC back, it would have nowhere to go.
Even if it left, it would invariably lead to something like the "Dalek" episode (at best). The only options are to self-terminate (which it does), or fight while surrounded and eventually be blown up by ATR's, which would be even more insulting than killing itself.

"Survival" trumps victory, so the fact Davros is presumed dead adds weight, even though it was their goal to kill him. The next time you see a Dalek in Doctor Who, it's screaming at the Doctor about how it must survive - and, unsurprisingly, it's not long before Davros is spearheading them once again.
The Daleks' mission for survival + purity is one of their biggest weaknesses, as both those goals often clash or contradict one-another, hence we have Daleks vs Daleks to begin with.

I really feel that this scene would have had more power, if we'd known the dalek's pronouns, what did he/she/it identify as? You can not have true sympathy for the alien killing machine without this knowledge.
Also, I didn't feel the Dr in this was credible as a time travelling alien, not flamboyant, gay or black enough, although the irony of the colour of the dalek wasn't lost on me. Obviously a oppressive subtext. Fill in words such as, patriarchy, dialectic, etc etc as you feel fit.

Finally, though poorly communicated within the serial, the Supreme's connection to that girl was met to further push it over the edge. As The Supreme panicked the connection was basically giving it sensory overload, so it kept getting more crazier until it pulled the trigger.

The Dalek Supreme was going insane because the Battle Computer, which was the little girl, had been leaking human emotions into it' mind.
So instead of retreating or fighting to the death, the Supreme has a mental breakdown detonating itself out of despair.
Additionally, Daleks have terrible ways of handling failures, usually they get executed for failing their objectives. So when the Supreme was told that it was the biggest failure in the history of the Daleks, it likely already had the instinct to terminate itself.

To be fair the novelisation explains this scene a bit better. The link to the battle computer weakened the Supreme by making it more susceptible to the emotions of the child being used for their machine, and her using power for her electro-attacls drains the Supreme's mental and physical energy, leaving it vulnerable and disorientated

Someone never watched Dalek, then. The Dalek in that was lost without a purpose, because if a Dalek can’t conquer, enslave or exterminate, then it prefers death. The Daleks actually asked the Doctor what it was meant to do without orders from its superiors, because it genuinely didn’t have a plan other than to exterminate everyone who stood in its way - because that’s the only thing it had ever been taught to do.
