I was thinking the same thing ! The interviewer is very amateurish but in return Jerry is being obnoxious. Both men are not being professional ! For some reason, Jerry seems very angry, resentful and uncomfortable....that's his right (I would too given the interviewer's poor skills), but if so, why didn't he simply get up and end the interview ?? After learning how Jerry treated his ex-wife and his sons, I lost all respect for the man, no matter how innovatie he was as a filmmaker.

The first question was quite rude. “Have you ever thought about retiring?” Jerry takes it as a suggestion rather than a question. I don’t even ask my own parents that. They will retire whenever they want. I think Jerry was offended from the start and the interviewer did not rectify it. He just kept going with more ageist questions. Jerry didn’t try to rectify it either.
@@Sean-me4fv The first question was part of a "90 year old in show business still working" package and was given to Carl Reiner, Cloris Leachman and they never reacted this horrible way.
Jerry Lewis was an amazing actor. He actually convinced the world that he wasn't a complete asshole. His emotionally and sometimes physically abused wife and sons knew the truth all along.
I always heard that Jerry was hard to get along with. He didn't leave his kids any money when he died. I guess Jerry figured out how to take it with him?
I remember he suffered a heart attack whilst in Australia and the marvellous heart surgeons and nursing staff helped save his life. I later read in the paper that he refused to pay the hospital bill. To my knowledge, it remains unpaid to this day.
My job for many years was interviewing 'celebrities', movie stars, actors, directors etc. for newspapers and radio stations. Please let me share what I know about a situation like this. OK the interviewer was a tiny bit unprepared in that he asked stock standard questions that Lewis would have had thrown at him hundreds of times. There's no religious angle in this as others have commented. Had the young interviewer been a rabbi it would have gone the same way. I've studied the dynamic of the Martin and Lewis years and right from day one Lewis did all the writing, all the arranging of venues, the travel management, the lot. Dean Martin wanted to play golf and Lewis was happy to let him do it. Lewis always knew he was the brains of the outfit; an easy thing to do when you're a control freak. There was a good reason why Lewis was never invited to become a member of the so-called 'Rat Pack'. It was because everyone who knew him thought he was an arsehole. In the movie 'King of Comedy' Jerry Lewis was not acting. He played himself. Go take another look at that film and you'll see the real Lewis. Lewis made a Will that "...intentionally..." cut out the six children he had by his first wife. If he'd wished to not have them named publicly as they have to be in a Will, he could have set up a Trust, but no, Lewis wanted to tell the world his six children "...and their decedents..." would not get a dime out of his $50 million estate. He didn’t state why; he just wanted the world to know these people would be penniless when it came to his fifty-mill. What a nasty man, a hateful man who's life's work was to make people laugh. In 1994 I had an opportunity to interview Lewis and it took me all of 3 or 4 seconds to think about it and turn down the offer. That's no ego thing, no bragging. I never interview actors or directors I don't like. Editors don't like negative pieces on world wide celebrities and I could never fake an admiration for Jerry Lewis. That would have made me as bad as he was. At the end of a phone interview with Don Rickles, one of my all time favourite comedians, I asked him what he thought about Jerry Lewis. He answered with a story: He said, "Jack Benny was one of the sweetest, kindest, most generous human beings ever born." Don, continued, "Let me just say this, you've got a huge problem in your life when Jack Benny dislikes you; to tell you the truth Jack loathed Jerry Lewis." I promised Mr Rickles that his comment on Lewis would be off the record and unreported until after Rickles's death. Thanks for your time reading this long post. Cheers, BH.
I wonder if the reporter said something before the cameras started rolling that rubbed Jerry the wrong way. Lewis seemed pissed even before the first question was asked. Even when Jerry Lewis was at his worst I've never seem him give such terse answers before.
I would start asking uncomfortable questions: Why did you disown your kids? Why won’t you help your illegitimate child who looks and talks just like you? Why do the French actually think you are funny?
I remember years ago. My dad told me that Jerry Lewis was a nasty mean guy. This interview is showing his true colours. Take my hat off to the interviewer.
@@TomYaz It does not matter who or what the interviewer is. JL was still a POS prick. The longer the interviewer was there, the more miserable JL was. If JL was so miserable, why did he consent to the interview. If the interviewer jus got up and walked away, Jerry would have made himself feel victorious. Like he did something great that no one else had ever accomplished. The only thing he accomplished was to die a poor, miserable lonely person when he could have surrounded himself with loved ones.
The questions were stupid and provocative. You don’t ask a 90 year old show business legend those kinds of questions. At 90 you don’t have to pretend to like somebody.
@ian Campbell Why? Maybe Lewis viewed this guy as a punk who needed a good going over. When you think about it all we know is what we see. Just like the videos of some Cop physically subduing a suspect. And everyone cries Police brutality. But you don't see the video of the suspect resisting arrest and kicking, punching and spitting at the Cop. Both sides need to be seen before a judgment is made friend.
@ian Campbell Yeah, I'm sure he was fine during the interview. But do you know about the background? Do you know what happened leading up to the interview? Do you know what the reporter said to Jerry Lewis before the cameras were rolling? Here's what we do know. Jerry Lewis has done hundreds and hundreds of interviews, and he was just fine. He gave detailed answers and did great. Did you stand up and cheer for him then? Nope. Bet everyone is ready to hang Lewis because of this one interview without even knowing why. And don't pretend to know anything about Jerry Lewis relationship with his kids. My brother was cut out of my fathers will because he was a lazy self-entitled person who was also disagreeable and mouthy. Did you know that Jerry Lewis left a great deal of money to his youngest daughter? Did he do that because he was mean and nasty? Stop judging without knowing the full story friend Humans are generally disappointing
It is possible that at this point in Jerry's life, he may have probably been sick and tired of being interviewed. I mean Jerry has been a celebrity (to my knowledge) for over 60 years. And I'm VERY sure that ANYBODY would've probably acted the same way Jerry did. I know if I was a celebrity for 60 plus years, I know for a fact, I would've told that interviewer to go f#@k himself after 60 years of being interviewed and people always asking for autographs, bothering me everywhere I went ect. So the way I see it, Jerry did the interview anyway and that makes him a better man then me. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that he was a nice guy because through the years I've read things about him that wasn't very nice. I'm just saying that being a star for over 60 years can take its toll on anybody to where you see people as always wanting something from you like autographs, time, money, the same old questions that you've answered hundreds of times. So yea, I think if anybody had the kinda fame for as long as Jerry had it, they wouldn't be so nice either, not due to conceit, but to being tired of being harassed for 60 plus years.
His children said later in interviews that when they heard his car pull into the driveway at home they would run and hide cause some days he would come home angry and they were petrified of him.
Just sad, it’s one thing to be an ahole to strangers but to your own family…I guess his will didn’t just leave his kids out, he actually had their names written in to be excluded. Just spiteful.
AND... he wrote them all out of his Will. Some lady inherited his money and his kids didn't get a dime. He let them know he never wanted them and the only reason he had kids was because it was EXPECTED in those days. Yes, seriously if he didn't want to waste his time Mr. Lewis could of declined to the interview. I'm thinking because of his age but I guess it's just his personality (what's left of it)
Then again one could be inclined to suggest that Jezza was still really switched on and playing a joke , else just having a bad day with a stomach ulcer or head-ache. ". . . a dusty cow town" LOL!
And why is that - dude answers questions - where is out of line and who are you to establish the line. There were two Jerry Lewis’s one was a funny gregarious charmer and the other a complete d1ck. You never knew which one was going to show up at an interview, concert, etc. Obviously this was evil Jerry.
I just WONDER what in the hell the Kid did to warrant this kind of vitriol. The funny part is, he probably has NO IDEA why Lewis is being an a**hole. Jerry Lewis was the kind of guy who HATED people who legitimately funny.
It's too bad that Jerry didn't just tell that reporter up front that he wants to skip the interview all together, instead of being like that the whole time.

What a miserable guy, this is a great example how unthankful someone can be and live a poor life. The richness in life is how well we treat others around us. Being a good neighbor starts right in our home right to every aspect of life.
This “is” the real Jerry Lewis. His overbearing personality wedged Dean Martin away for many years. There is documented his atrocious behavior to women he had sign contracts to work with him on a couple of skits or movies for a period of time. While he paid them well above other movie producers, once signed on dotted line…the most egregious things occurred and he held them to fulfill contract any way. Cast and crew jobs were on the line if he told them to never speak to that actress during contract. This year so much will come to light about usa as a whole. The country you never knew, but grew up in.
Where it goes off the rails? The very first question: "Have you ever thought about retiring?" For someone Jerry Lewis or William Shatner and a handful of others who need to keep doing it or actually anyone who still works at that age....never under any circumstances ask them that question. It suggests "get off the stage," "you're at the end of your life and talent move on." Never ask anyone that question. It implies they should get off the stage. If anything save it as a last question. Ask about the new thing. Lead with the new thing. The thing they want to talk about, then go to the other stuff. I've watched many many of these kinds of interviews and given some myself to people over 85. Never ask them about retiring. Never.
This video clip edits out the important opening comment the interviewer made to Jerry: "We're doing a story about people still working in their 90s". If that had been left in, rather than edited out, people might understand the interviewer's comments or questions about age.
The interviewer was totally insulting. His questions were more like statements. -- which were insulting. Raymond Arroyo did an interview with Jerry that was delightful. Why? Because Raymond Arroyo is a professional who knows how to do a great interview AND because he is truly interested which trumps everything else -- being genuinely interested in the person that you are interviewing will result in a great interview. The guy who did this interview was pitiful. There was nothing likable or professional with this guy. It sounded like he just wanted to get through the questions/statements and wasn’t the least bit interested. So yeah -- I wish Jerry Lewis would have stood up and said “you need to go”, we’re done”.
That doesn't make it any better! Unless Lewis was told days in advance that this was the premise of the interview, he had every right to react that way.
@@lilybond6485 two totally different interviews with two totally different purposes. Arroyo’s interview is meant to be styled like a conversation between a journalist and a subject. this interview is meant to give Jerry a chance to speak about things people may be wondering about. the “interviewer” isn’t really an interviewer, he’s just someone who’s relaying the questions. jerry agreed to this interview, he knew what the focus would be right before it started and when it was presented to him. if he didn’t like it, he shouldn’t have agreed.
I know a woman who was a child actor and was in numerous movies and tv shows. She has nothing but glowing things to say about almost everyone she's ever worked with. The lone exception was Jerry Lewis. She worked with him on a variety show in 1968 and said he was a total ass and didn't like him at all.
This was not a interview about Jerry Lewis. It was about comedians working past a certain age. Jerry knew that going into it. Someone there should have stopped the interview and excused him and either reset or reschedule.
Yes, Jerry was well known in the industry as a “posterior orifice”, and it definitely showed here. To be fair, the reporter was ill-prepared. He was just reading the questions like a script instead of engaging with Jerry, and some of the questions could come off as rude, like the one asking him about retirement. I give the interviewer credit for showing patience and carrying on because it was obvious that Jerry was stonewalling this poor guy.
@@damienholland8103 I didn't say it justified his attitude. I just said calling him old is rude. The mature thing to do would be to tell him the question was rude or end the interview.
What ppl don't realize is Jerry had a sadistic streak... he had his sadistic personality flaw. Sadistic personality flaws are born from people who have an over aggressive personality Style. That's it that's what he had.... amazing.
It must have been such a chaotic time coming up in Hollywood in those days. The industry was still in its adolescence as movies and television evolved into technicolor, and studios were trying to figure out who, or what to sell, and how to sell it to the public to make a buck. That's why a lot of the major players were discovered as small time acts. Once people were stars they had to stay stars or other wise they lose their jobs and by extension everything they worked so hard to attain mansions, cars, etc. I'm not trying to defend Jerry Lewis I think later on he made some rash decisions that really don't reflect that of a kind, or humble man. I believe it was probably the industry of the time post ww2 that turned him into such a negative person it was a cut throat time of succeed or die trying.
Jerry Lewis shows a mean and cruel heart. What a sick, miserable human being he was!. Now one understands the alienation he had to his 4 sons. Yikes! Can you imagine having had a father like that? What a lowlife!
The interviewer literally asked nothing and kept talking about how old he is or what pain might be causing his career to fail. This was an incredibly rude interview.
I don’t know a lot about him but give the guy a break. The interviewer basically calls him old over and over again. Every question is a stupid question.
Also, the interviewer kept asking him closed (yes or no) questions. Obviously an inexperienced interviewer. Jerry was pleasant and engaging in most of his interviews. I don’t know if he was just getting crotchety in his old age, or if the interviewer pushed his buttons, but this isn’t how he typically came across.
@@vincecozzi2545 Agreed, if I was the interviewer, I would have just said "you obviously are being obstinate and don't want to be interviewed so I'll just leave you alone now. Bye." And then just left the grump to hinself.
@Sabrina Dugan After watching several of Jerry's interviews from the same period, the problem was 100% the person doing the interview, he didn't have the experience to pull it off and it irritated Jerry (obviously). Surely there would have been something in there that he could have used to spark a conversation. I bet if he would have asked about some expensive artwork or artifact that was being displayed, he would have seen a completely different Jerry.
Did he seem like a seasoned interviewer to you? I didn't get that impression. Lewis could have used his brain and seen that for himself and put a tiny bit of effort into being approachable. It was too much of a bother apparently for him to dial down from 11 at being an ass in this instance. I suppose in this case his conduct could have been impacted by his advanced age but from what I've read he wasn't always as stellar as he publicly appeared.
He was such a prick. The interview was filmed at his house. If he didn’t want them there or didn’t want to do the interview, why the hell didn’t he say anything?
I remember watching this some years back and feeling really saddened by this..I was shocked by how rude and obnoxious he was and then puzzled as to why he agreed to do the interview in the first place.Really disappointed that he turned out like this ...And he didn't destroy the interviewer...He destroyed what trace of a good reputation he had...
My older sister was an usher at a venue he was performing at back in the early 70's and some kids with Muscular Dystrophy wanted to come back stage, meet him and give him some coffee cans of money they collected. His response was, "Get those fucking brats out of here" and walked off. He's always been a prick.
He gives off an air of knowing he is 'untouchable' (to me, anyway.) Not someone I would like to get on the wrong side of. Almost gangster-ish. Like there are unspoken threats hanging in the air. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into it 😄
Jerry Lewis was, is, and will always be remembered as a pompous, arrogant, racist, demeaning, bad-tempered narcissist. I always thought his act was stupid and now understand why Dean Martin wanted nothing to do with him.
Made we wonder why Jerry even consented to this interview/or this reporter. He obviously disliked the guy immensely.
Why? ...for the rush of power...... he demeaned many people and usually those who couldn't defend themselves - egoist and bully - dean martin had enough of him and eventually, so did everybody else.........

For some reason, Jerry seems very angry, resentful and uncomfortable....that's his right (I would too given the interviewer's poor skills), but if so, why didn't he simply get up and end the interview ?? The first question was quite rude. “Have you ever thought about retiring?” Jerry takes it as a suggestion rather than a question. I don’t even ask my own parents that. I refuse to believe this story, Jerry Lewis didn’t have a heart.
Cheers, BH.
Thank you for a great insight.
I wonder if the reporter said something before the cameras started rolling that rubbed Jerry the wrong way. Lewis seemed pissed even before the first question was asked. Even when Jerry Lewis was at his worst I've never seem him give such terse answers before.

Humans are generally disappointing

Interviewers big mistake. Interviewer started with questions concerning Jerry’s age. Jerry went on the defensive from the get go.
He never said anything about his age
@@franoreilly7004 Guess you didn't watch the video.
I agree completely with your observation.
This was jerry showing his true colors before the shocking will leaving his boys nothing.
Yes, poor interviewer, but jerry was a dick right out of the gate😅
My guess is that working past 80 was the topic of the interview. And he had to read the questions off a card, because Jerry wasn't giving any answers.
Jerry was just being rude, the interviewer didn't do anything wrong.

What ppl don't realize is Jerry had a sadistic streak... he had his sadistic personality flaw. Sadistic personality flaws are born from people who have an over aggressive personality Style. That's it that's what he had.... amazing.
When he got older he became very difficult, and wasn't funny, or entertaining at all I think he died a very bitter man.
I have a sneaking suspicion he was always difficult. All that writing acting directing schmaltz got boring in the 60’s.. 😉

At the end of the show, he and my mother had seen Jerry walking with some of his entourage, not appearing to be in any hurry.
