- A remarkable performance by Anthony Newley - a complete story in a few minutes - of his song written for the American Comedy Awards, "The Man Who Makes You Laugh." This is from Michael Parkinson's program in 1978 with guests Newley, Leslie Bricusse, and Petula Clark.
I was fortunate enough to perform alongside the amazing Anthony Newley - as beautiful a person as he was talented as an actor/singer. An amazing performer, generous, kind, inspirational - so greatly missed! xxx
Anyone who doesn't see the beauty and pathos in this amazing performance clearly has no understanding of the human condition. Tony you are a true star.

Words fail me to describe the brilliance of this
Tony Newley was the greatest showman the U.K. ever had !
I loved this man, he’s ultra talented, never tire of him. Original, not afraid to stand forward and just perform. I hope I have a place at table Newley in the next world.you made us laugh, you made us think, and think , wow you were good ❤️
Wonderful, Tony Newley......The Master at work, Wht a talent, God rest his soul!
Can’t get his performance off my mind What a talent. He left us too soon would have loved to see him in person He was special
A lyrical genius and so much more. Tony has added to the happiness in my life through his songs, performances and charm.
He may be gone, but he won't be forgotten by those who care.
His performances will never be surpassed, seldom equaled. one of the greatest.
I remember seeing this as a child...My God, I was almost moved to tears. What a showbiz tribute. Such sweet humility and humanity!!
Back in the late 70's I went to see a Burt Bacharach concert, and Anthony Newley was the opening act. He did this song, and I never forgot it. I remember thinking that Burt should have been the opening act for Newley. So glad to be able to see this again. Thanks for putting it up.
He's the dad of every British singer who doesn't feel he has to sound like an American when he sings.
One of the best performances of this special man. Love this!!
I had the great pleasure of seeing/hearing Tony Newley do this wonderful song many times in Las Vegas--it always stopped the show because it is so wonderfully perfectly autobiographical for anyone who's ever done comedy.
Thanks, Sandy. Tony Newley was of the finest writing and performing talents to ever grace a stage. He was pure, incomparable talent. I had the opportunity to meet him twice at a hotel in Palm Springs in the early 80s. (I was working as a pianist in the hotel lounge of what used to be the Sheraton Plaza). He was performing with Steve & Eydie at a private fund raiser for Hebrew University in Israel. We talked at length about the punk invasion. He didn't get it anymore than I did. He was every bit as nice as he appears. Natural, gracious, witty and humble. His scope of talent was so much more than most realize. The world lost him way too soon. It's good to see his writing partner (Leslie Bricusse) is still creatively going strong at 85. (Like Bill Miller until he was 91!)
You're very welcome. Thank you for your wonderful memories!
Love you Mr Newley, sleep well my angel, will never forget you!! xxxxxxxxxxx
As I've said before.....what a handsome, consummate performer Tony was. Remembered by many of we fans, with great affection.
Like a lot of people here, I saw Anthony Newley perform this once and could never forget it. Everyone at the 1978 American Comedy Awards received a cassette recording of "The Man Who Makes You Laugh". After his performance of this song in a room filled with comedians and other entertainers there was stunned silence for what seemed like several long seconds -- before thunderous applause.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I have been trying to find this song for forty years.
an amazing performance....rich on so many levels...what a great talent.
A person who sang and superbly acted the part. He is missed
The Stars look very different today..
RIP David Bowie.
Newley was amazing no question !!
Few performers could sell a song like Newley...Thanks for posting this.
I had the pleasure and honor to meet Anthony Newley late in his career when he performed at the Holiday House in Monroeville, PA (now long gone). I had always been a big fan. He didn't have the greatest voice, but he had a unique style and could he ever interpret a song. He performed this piece that night and years later I was able to find an album on which he sings it. Thank you to the person who posted this video. What a real treat it is to watch him perform it again.
Sandy, I'd be in your debt forever if you could find more forgotten performances like this, thanks!
Working on it, John.
Thank you for being so generous and giving us a chance to enjoy his talent.
How great is that! He's so talented and it's so sad he's not still around.Met him in'93 after seeing him in Scrooge in Norwich;he was so nice. Wish he was around now so he knew how much he's loved and admired.Have just joined the Anthony Newley Appreciation Society too. Thanks so much.
Tony Newly, absolutely brilliant.
Only one word to describe this - "FABULOUS". Thanks for posting!
Another great star who left us way too soon.. My favorite song by him.
how did he die?
Absolutely brilliant. Every nuance, every gesture and mime. The timing, the humor the pathos wrapped up in a beautiful voice and presented to us like a gift with seemingly effortless ease. I'm working my way through all the Anthony Newley on UA-cam so any more you might add would be fantasmagorical. Thnx.
Same here. Watching all Tony Newly videos. What a musical genius!
bloody brilliant.
Of the child I'll never forget this endless wonder of greatness and this man. I saw him on the Mike Douglas show. I remember crying and I never got him. Amazingly enough, I found this unforgettable remembrance on youtube.
Perfection! ❤
Bravo divo!!!
....just, Bravo!
Great song that really hits the heart
I first saw Anthony Newley in the movie Sweet November and could tell he was something else. Then there was this other talent. Pretty amazing. ♥️😇♥️
Thank you for posting this amazing performance. So good to see it again. Anthony Newley was a creative genius with mind-blowing talent.
He is a legend unique what a loss he and Sammie Davies Jnr a sad loss. Ty for posting
This is great!!! Wonderful ...just wonderful!!!
The greatest entertainer this country has produced.
I have lived this song as well as performed it many times...Thanks Tony from a friend and a fan as well...

Anthony Newley is tremendously brilliant. He is my role model. Tyler Lord Hamilton
the man who made me cry.
I agree, Sandy N! A remarkable and wonderful performance by Anthony Newley.
I think it's a pity that we do not have such great artists anymore. Anthony, was a genius for me!
Thank you for this video
I saw this brilliant performer offer the same 'theatre' of this song at The London Palladium in 1978 - do young people today really believe they being entertained by listening to rap (as an example)? I genuinely feel sorry for young people who have been 'short changed' in the belief that they are being 'entertained' by such 'stars'....
Thank you Merv Griffin, as you had Anthony on quite a few times and sang this.
A showman who is missed
thank you Tony, and happy anniversary in heaven. April 14 1999 RIP
Just love his voice.
20 years gone #otd RIP Anthony 💜💫
"Where are the Words?" Really, there are none that could do him and this performance, justice.
Thank you so much for posting this. I've never seen it. I loved him.....I was 6 years old and captivated by him on Ed Sullivan.
This really is mesmerizing-he was so talented and I really enjoy him -whether he was very young and even when it seems his voice changed as he aged -love his unique styling and phrasing throughout his career
FANTASTIC 👋👍👍👍💕💕💓
He's just so handsome.....
U can say that again
Thank you so much for posting this. This song is hard to find. I remember when Anthony used to perform this on the Mike Douglas Show in the 70s.
One of the strangest -coolest- singers/song writers.
Tony was just incredible
It was recorded on his 1978 album, THE SINGER AND HIS SONGS.
I used to do clown shows for kids, & this song went DEEP with me back then {& still does now in reflection of those days}. If you're a clown, &/or have a true clown's heart, you'll know exactly what I mean. So sad how clowns are looked at these days. I was a GOOD clown, not a "bad" one. Thanks Steven Spielberg {"IT"} you Schmuck!! :(
Yes.
I didn't know that this was around; as I understood, Mr. Newley dod not record the song. I'm a big Newley fan and this brings back some memories. Thanks!
I have been looking for this song for so long. A wonderful memory of watching the Mike Douglas Show when I was young. It brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so much for posting!
His performances were so fraught with emotion and nuance. Wow.
Magnificent!
One of my favorites, I, too, remember hearing it on tv at the time and have been singing it (offstage) ever since.
This clip is brilliant and is from one of the BBC Parky talk show the best talk show ever.
I have enjoyed listening to Newly for the last 24 hours and this song is just about perfect. Thank you for your postings.
Pity the great Parky keeps reminding us of our mortality but we do get a free pen. Newley great as always. What a performer.
If you don't consider his film, television, writing or theater careers, and the fact that he always played the main room, I guess it's somewhat accurate. ;-)
He looks so cool here.
Yeah your 100% right on!!!
I love this album, and this song.. What a rare performance!
Ever hear "My Friend Howie"? It's great and I have a sneaking suspicion that it's about his buddy Mr. Bricusse there...
Genius! :-) Farewell to Saff London prodgy David Jones xo
The echoes between this song and many Bowie songs and themes, and between their voices, performance styles, pathos, humor, passion, humanness, mime & stage backgrounds... so similar. Yeah Bowie must've surely loved this song. It was one of my huge favorites as a kid in the 70s. I guess they never did any duets together sadly?
I think Bowie also liked Dudley Moore (as do I). Newley always makes me think of him too. Peace to all.
Lovely thoughts Linda :-) It was Peter cook and Dudley Moore who introduced me to Tony Newley! They used his name in a comic capacity on the 'Derek & Clive' albums! He was mentioned in a passing comment only, and as I recall, it was mostly very rude and very funny in equal amounts :-D
+Linda Redmond Newley and Bowie never met.
Newley died 1999 from renal cancer, age 67.
@tesswarwick I also saw it just once - never forgot it. Quite sure it was on Carson in the mid 70s.
@tesswarwick I'm in the US. I do hope someone will know exactly what show the performance you remember was on!
Can anybody tell me who the orchestra was that was with him on the recorded version?
@tesswarwick If you're referring to the 1972 US special, THE ANTHONY NEWLEY SHOW, he did not perform that song on it. Perhaps this was the performance on THE AMERICAN COMEDY AWARDS. Does anyone remember that one who can verify?
Lounge singing is a style or genre. Tony Bennet was another. You can be lounge singer in the bath if you want! Personally I prefer Burning Spear, in the bath or anywhere else for that matter, but thats just personal choice...
Clearly David Bowie was inspired by him.
You're from Susan's Newley site, aren't you?
@hazzanohio Marvelous! You're very welcome.
Thats what he was. A lounge singer.
David Bowie def channels Mr. Newley in his crooning style. Or is this a particularly English thing?
He sounds an awful lot like Sammy when he sings "Make us laugh."
I meant just the singing. `Lounge singing` is a genre or style. About as far from my taste as you could get but thats not the point.
Is he Noel Gallaghers Dad?
