Healing Force - Golden Miles

  • Healing Force's one and only single"Golden Miles", a Top 20 hit in Melbourne & Sydney in July 1971, gets my vote for the best Aussie single of all time, played by some of our very best musicians. Starting with the oustanding melody & lyrics by guitarist Lindsay Wells (Chain, Blackfeather), it is embellished no end by one of the most memorable organ riffs ever committed to vinyl & created by Mal Logan (Dingoes, Renee Geyer Band, Little River Band), and all topped off with an outstanding lead vocal by New Zealander Charlie Tumahai (Friends, Mississippi, Be Bop Deluxe). When you add the solid work of bass player Gus Fenwick (Pleazers, Bootleg Family) & drummer Laurie Pryor (The Twilights, Chain), there's really nothing NOT to like (Aust#31-19 Melb#16-15 Syd#18-14 Bris# - Adel#28-12 Perth# - Hob#36: Thanks to David Kent & Gavin Ryan for the chart placings)

Hi GMs fans, better throw my bib in after all this time. It was definitely Charlie who played bass on GMs and everything else we did and John Pugh had just rejoined the band after the recording was released and it's a shame we broke up before his talents as a player and singer were made available to the band and public. The main reason we broke up was we were worn out from relentless touring and barely making enough to live. The scoundrel who bought the record company ripped us off and offererd no opportunity to record an album and as I wrote all of the originals we played to that point it still breaks my heart that I let Healing force disintergrate. Someone stole my lyrics book in 1973 but at least we have GMs, The Gully and Poem of Joy, they were fabulous musicians and as I am still a performing Pro, I will always remember and be inspired by our time together, love you all, Lindsay

When you're old like me, memories are long and nostalgia is that well worn overcoat you leave in a crumpled heap inside the wardrobe. But every now and again when the temptation is too tempting, you pick up that overcoat, dust it off and instantly you're transported back in time.
And we find ourselves in 1971. I'm a 15 year old pimply faced schoolboy who's just discovered Australian progressive rock bands and can't quite believe how lucky I am.
There were some bands and tunes that just stick with you like glue from that galaxy so, so long ago. Like Healing Force and the song Golden Miles. The screaming vocals of bass player Charlie Tumahai, keyboard player Mal Logan's incredible melodic riff and Lindsay Well's lyrics for a song that is an Australian classic. Well to me it is.
Mal Logan had to borrow keyboards from Warren Pig Morgan but it was no impediment to creating what many Australian music critics believe was our finest hour.
Sadly, Charlie is no longer with us but his vocals will always be.

I did see on the 45 cover that it was made and recorded in Melbourne.
These guys should've been as big as The Masters Apprentices but I think because Charlie was Maori there was an issue with that culturally here in Australia, I'm being circumspect here and we'll never know now but it would be a tragedy if that were the case as all these guys had great musical artistry and skill.

I was 15 and it was my one and only Woodstock-like experience. This song brings back memories of a more innocent and uncomplicated time of peace, love and lots of dope and that Aussie version of "the Summer of Love". It certainly wasn't the biggest hit of that year..in fact it barely made Top 20. But as you can see, many people have fond memories of this song..not too familiar with Guess Who out here..they certainly had hits but it was an odd situation with them. I grew up listening to..& loving Albert Flasher, American Woman which did well in Melbourne but not Sydney. But they had hits by the band I never heard.. and Adelaide different hits again. It was rare to find a Guess Who hit that truly charted nationally as each of the 7 states & their radio stations went for different tracks.

@@trevortagliabue5650 Ok.. let me rephrase. Not so much annoying as amateurish and boring. Trying to be fair. But hey, in it's defense, you can't dance to it. Maybe I should have been willing to listen to the end but, well... my ears hurt and my attention wandered.
