I was there for this recording. 15 yo and loving the Aussie music scene. Some great lunchtime free concerts at the Sydney Town back in the early '70s. Spectrum, La De Das, Company Caine, Carson County, Jeff StJohn and the Copper Wine, Blackfeather, Wendy Saddington. Great era in Oz rock
oh yeah, really!
In 1973 UNSW had lunchtime concerts every Thursday with those same bands, $00.60 admission.
I’m here because their album “The Happy Prince”. In so much love with the track “Covered In Gold”. New Zealand really do have something different from US/UK mainstream back in 60s and 70s. I was so shocked when I first time hear it. Much appreciation to the great band The La De Da's. Love from China. Thank you guys for making such a GREAT music.
One of my very favorite bands from NZ. We would see them at the Village Green Hotel in Melbourne, Victoria around 1970-1. when aged 18 how privileged we were to see these class acts. Gunna See My Baby Tonight . All along the Watchtower. Kevin Borich. And also Blackfeather. They had the feel. so relaxed. They were our Jimmy Hendrix. Fantastic live music.
Village Green...... HA HA HA . THAT BUCKET OF BLOOD. Had a bad reputation.Safer at The Totty , at least you knew who the brawlers were there.
Best version of All along the watchtower EVER
🤡👈🫵🤣🤣
the jimi hendrix version sounds more exciting and desperate
The first time I heard this was on GTK when I was a teenager. A year or so later I snuck into a pub underage to watch the La De Das live. This is still my favourite version of All Along the Watchtower.
The fellas doing the sound at the ABC back in the 70s knew what they were doing. Live band playing a song completely different from the album version. Everyone, including the La De Das, nailed it.
pretty funny how today with all our supposed technological advances they still struggle getting it right. This recording and mix sounds as good as any studio recording
GTK, what raal musos watched instead of Countdown (and then watched Countdown on the sly). #bring back pub rock and get rid of poker machines!
Phil Key (vocals/guitar), Kevin Borich (guitar), Peter Roberts (bass), Keith Barber (drums)
Kevin is just amazing with his career and that Guitar
Just saw him last night in Caloundra...he's 76 now...played a 2 1/4 hour set uninterrupted...nearly killed his band...lol...never seen that before...still has it! Inspiring...
@@cm-kl2wxyes I saw Kevin in Canberra on 23 March 2024. Fantastic show
The BEST version of All Along the Watchtower PERIOD! ,,,,,,Kevin Borich & Phil Key are in another League alltogether!
I know they were Kiwis, but they were one of the greatest ever Aussie bands.
As were Enz and Crowded House!!
Never an Aussie band........ever ever...
What a fantastic version! Saw Kevin Borich Express a number of times Bombay, Council Club etc. The boy could play!
Australia's Jimmy Hendricks he could do everything except make you breakfast on stage lol.
That ain't Borich on lead, don't think he was in the band at the time.
@@burtramone765 Borich is lead guitar on this one
@@burtramone765 That's KB for sure
l must have been suffering 'after effects'' that day, l definitely stand corrected.@@fredfred6644
Brilliant loved it early 70s. I still love this band today .❤❤❤❤
Great ! even though a bit restrained, just shows how much Hendrix was leaps and bounds ahead of everyone and still is.
Great version!
Best version ever so cool
They played at the Engineering dance at the University of Newcastle dance in 71 and played a great version of Jumping Jack Flash at my request. Great, underrated band!!
phil key has a great voice, sounded great with band of light too, kevin borich looks shy
KB is one of Austrliasia most guifted musos know him well as The Das' and my band I was in, The Pleazers had the same manager and recording co. Zodiac Records. The Das were released on the Philips label
the La de das go back to 1966 7 in N Z
Love it. My favourite version of this song. UA-cam is amazing.
Thanks for posting the best interpretation I ever heard for this song. Great band!!!. Cheers from Spain.
sugarow
Kevin Borich is up there with the best guitarists in the world. Ask Santana why he pulled Borich's guitar lead! Mick Keys has a great voice.
@@landydave1000 It's Phil Keys
@@landydave1000 can you ask for me?
What a guitarist Kevin is and great band La De Das were
Loved the LDD and KBE
+Eddie RUKidding - you are so on to it - I've just given myself an uppercut at my absolute arrogance for not knowing the LDD did a version. I'm a Kiwi and I just gotta this is very impressive...I need to do some research on this crew.
I was there for this recording, on a primary school excursion, the first live music I ever saw
Awesome band. We watched them all over Sydney, circa 69/70. Especially loved catching them at the Here disco, in North Sydney. Them and Max Merritt. SO good.
La De Das first band I ever saw, actually heard at the Millers Pub, Cobweb Room in Fairfield. Wasn't old enough to get in - listened outside. Future years saw Kevin Borich time and time again. Master of the blues, rock, boogie and slide.
Like wise. I snuck into the Royal Hotel (now demolished) Wollongong as a 16-17 year old to see the La De Das live.
Great Aussie band ! Saw them playing this one night at the Roundhouse at Uni of NSW in 72 !
Kiwi
Yeah they were Kiwis but we Aussies adopted them. We did this with many N Zealand acts (not just bands or singers but also actors etc), if they were talented we made them ours and called them Aussies, if not, they were just Kiwis 😂
The Roundhouse was a great place for concerts with some of the best bands of the time. I used to go there a lot in 70 & 71
Brilliant. I always remembered them as a good band.
saw them by accident 1969 at Lucifers in Sydney.....they were the band on at the time....brilliant
VERY VERY WELL ............................................................
Great band! They had the first three tracks on the Sunbury ('72) Festival album - great live!
GTK - Yes! As a kid out in the country with only two TV channels - GTK was a rare, rare delight...
But why 'Three Riders were approaching'? 3:48 Not 'Two' as per Dylan etc.?
Thanks for your video 🙂👍❤
All in!
Strange I heard this 1st time in my life on a beautiful 31st Night of 2022 Opps it's official Happy New year 1st Jan 2023 :D
No I am not high and listening alone to this song in my room
Big ups! Oooooh what memories, grrreat flash back.☮️✡️🕉🐋😎🍀
Lucky too see Kevin many times at Manzell room unreal
Saw them a few times in the day, hard to beat, as was COMPULSION a Hendrix cover band that was right on, too wild for mass appeal. Leo DeCastro did a Little Richard show at the MANDALA in Sydney that was more than believable.
Did you go back to Finland
Wow KB
Very cool nice one
awesome
kicks ass
Yep
As that Yoko’s brother on rhythm guitar…
First time I’ve ever heard this version. Sorry I ain’t a jimmy Hendrix fan at all. But I’m a Dylan fan not just an artist his lyrics I have two books on it and wow amazing to read deep inside of it. Also some of you might or might not know I actually named my second child after bob. Dillyn is her name!
I was just showing my
Mum my records of Johnny cash Glen Campbell Suzanne Prentice Tom petty a shit ton of Bob Dylan pink Floyd dire straits AC/DC the seekers Jim Reeves Johnny Mathis Garner Wayne Noel Parlane (a lot of these are kiwi country singers too and they are worth a listen)
btw good guitarrist ua-cam.com/video/7gphiFVVtUI/v-deo.html - Estas Tonne - The Song of the Golden Dragon
i think partly it could some "better be played but most really good so far and strong , partly even more , it "looks that he a really really good and strong guitarrist , at least so far , .., really ^ ^ , ...,
Just saw this first time , was a massive Hendrix fan then
Perfect, Was that kB on lead ? The singer was a legend too x
Introductory chords: Streets of Your Town?
Some needs to go back to the studio. I think the bass player is still grooving away.
Kevin Borich Express
Incredible guitarist - the feel at the end of the song is masterful
Different to the lp . Think lp was called legend. It had my fave songs on it
Richard Shell - Yes, the album is called Legend . It was a best of the La De Das, the version of watchtower on legend was cut after Phil keys left, it was recorded as a 3 piece with Kevin Borich on vocals and guitar and is faster and more Hendrix like
@@robmac6508 love both versions Rob.. kevin still going . not sure whats happening during covid crap.. be well safe ok
This stats with more of the Dylan version. The guitar stays with Hendrix principle.
kiwis
The bassist should have gone on holiday...lol...would have made almost no difference to the song...they got little respect back then...
..tele gets annoying after a while
Julius is you still up and about .Is Bob still kicking ,I am trying to get in touch with Gary Oneil but out of the glass works he hard to catch.
They were one of my favourite bands at the time. This makes me smile...
