Why is Saint George celebrated in Barcelona? | Sant Jordi

- April 23rd, Saint George's Day, known in Catalonia as La Diada de Sant Jordi, is my favorite day of the year. The streets are filled with books, roses, and Catalan flags. Barcelona is buzzing.
It's the best time to be in Barcelona and is almost like a Catalan Valentine's Day where, traditionally, women get roses and men get books. Over 1.5 million copies can be sold in one day alone and people are all around to take in the festivities.
What is the legend of Saint George and why are books and roses given out every April 23rd in Barcelona?

You too
Love this! Thank you for this information!
You’re welcome!!
Excellent video. Answers all the questions my students and I had about this wonderful day. Happy St. Jordi, Patrick!
Glad to hear it! Thanks for sharing the video with your students
Thank you for this video and educating me on the tradition.
I am a big Manchester City women football fan and we have two Spanish players and one is injured for the rest of the season so we wanted to cheer her up with the tradition and give her a rose.
But I also wanted to understand the tradition so thank you for this video. The players loved that we thought of them and shared pictures with the roses in the Manchester City dressing room which we loved. 🌹🩵
That’s awesome Charlotte! Glad the video helped your understanding! Thanks for sharing that
Great video, thanks for that tight story.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed
Thank you ! Love Barcelona at any time 🌹🐲
You’re welcome Susana, best day of the year, but you’re right, Barcelona is great any time of the year!
I was living in Barcelona last year, but couldn't celebrate on April 23rd as we were all still in lockdown. I did go to a rooftop party with some fireworks in July where everyone told me how great a celebration it usually is! Unfortunately now I'm back in Los Angeles, but eager to return.
Sorry to hear that Debbie. It was a bummer got everyone that we couldn’t celebrate Sant Jordi last year, although they tried, finally pushing it back to July 23rd. Just want the same.
This year is going to be quite different too. I’ll be going LIVE to show anyone that can’t visit what it looks like this year. Might be hard to joint in with the time difference in LA, but you can catch it later on.
Maybe you can join is next year!
St George's day in England is celebrated..but if you read the history..he was a Turkish soldier's
Going in person for the celebration this year!
It should be great
Thank you so much for the story, here in Egypt we celebrate the day of St George too in 1th of May and 16th of November but not like that way of course usually we go to churches and monasteries to celebrate this day in our special way as Coptic Orthodox church.. i wish to visit Barcelona at that day 😍
Wow! Thanks for sharing Samuel, I never knew that
The story about the dragon is so interesting!
It’s one of the most popular here. All the kids are taught it!
So, if I'm reading this right, the Story of Saint George and the dragon happened in Montblanc, am I right? Is that starting in 1456 or was the story going around long before that?
And depending on the answer, how did this story get moved from Silien, in Libya, to Spain, or vice versa?
Wow I never knew st.george was celebrated in Spain. I will definitely have to go next time I am there. It's a shame as in England st Georges has been played down over the years and it isn't observed much anymore.
You’ll have to see it. It’s a very special day!
I tho it was a Turkish warrior
