- This 4-part documentary from 2008 follows the progress of 4 law students on the thorny path to become fully-fledged barristers, as well as giving a glimpse into the work of already established barristers.
Barristers are a legal profession with a long tradition in the judicial system of England and Wales. Until fairly recently most barristers were often not directly contacted by clients but by solicitors on behalf of clients. But as some things in the profession this is slowly changing.
The independence of the bar is crucial to getting justice. England is trying to ape America a very sad stae of affairs. There are downsides to the American system with overzealous prosecutors.
Because barristers are not employed to any one institution, they can represent the Crown one day and the defence on the next or for the plaintiff or insurance company in civil court. Thus barristers do not fall directly under the dictates of either side and are better able to develop an arm's length relationship with the client. The barrister is primarily an officer of the court he or she ought not to bring the process of justice into ill repute. The win at all costs mentality festers
more readily when one is caught in the sights of management who set targets as to the number of convictions reached.
@3:48 ~ I wonder why her briefs have a red ribbon around them? I say that because the fictional TV show “silk“ says that red is for defense and white is for prosecution.
Bit of a shock. My old pupil master at 3.33. Very small world. Lol
Really
anyone else notice that the guy narrating this is the same guy who narrated the original radio version of A Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy?!
That Sandrea Manard in 3:47 is HOT!!!!
DO NOT obey a criminal. the state will prosecute you along side the criminal.
These out of touch grey barristers, really!!
@Dennis Adrian I’m completely convinced... not. Both of your accounts joined 3 weeks ago- that might be a bit of a giveaway.
