► The summer of strikes continues as today, it's been the turn of barristers in England and Wales. They've walked out in a row about pay and working conditions, specifically to do with legal aid cases.
Now, they're due a pay rise of 15 percent - but the Criminal Bar Association, which represents barristers, says it's too little too late.

At this point anyone voting for the Tories, Labour, SNP, Green or Lib Dem’s clearly need their head examined.
They aren't the Party of low taxes. They just raised NIC by 1.25%. Tory, Labour, SNP, Lib Dem, Green are all the same. They want to steal your money and they will waste it. They want you poor
Let me refresh your memory. 10% of the world’s population own 70% of the World’s wealth and 1% of that 10% own most of that 70%
People keep going on about politicians and completely ignore the offensively rich, billionaires, even a few trillionaires. Where do you think they get that money from? Us, me, you. Remember the hullabaloo about tax havens, how the rich pay less tax than the poor.
How much do you think the big Drug companies make off us. How much does the Arms Trade cost us and what is their pay and bonuses. Some years back the top five Drug companies paid their top CFO’s (Chief Financial Officers) a total years bonus of 50 billion, yes billion. 10 billion each on average, and I dread to think what their annual salary was. No wonder the NHS never has enough money.
Go on and keep telling your friends about this because if these mega greedy people paid just their due taxes many a Country’s Head could pay out more to us the ordinary folk who feed the greed of these ultra rich. And don’t talk about there donations to Charity, we probably wouldn’t need charities in the first place if they paid there fair share.

Everyone saying they "earn a fortune"; The junior barristers don't and that's the issue. They're getting at max, £12K-£13K a year. The only ones that is sustainable for, for the three years until they qualify for higher salaries, are those who already come from money, have funds and family resources to get them through that underpaid period. That's the issue. We soon won't have any barristers from working class backgrounds at all because they simply can't sustain themselves through the training, it will all be upper middle-class rich folk running the court of law. The government has made the requirements to become a lawyer in the UK extremely stringent. Nevertheless, the CJS is of the most unmanned sectors in this country. Is this why our justice system is appalling?
@@Pr1ckles Yes. It all comes down to money.
@@hammer3721 I find it somewhat amusing that when a problem like this arises in the private sector the solution is to identify and resolve inefficiencies in the system and increase automation.. when this happens in the public sector the solution is to tax everyone more (most of whom earn significantly less than barristers). Given barristers spend all day arguing over justice & fairness, does that sound just and fair to you?
The way to become a ‘lawyer’ (loathe that term) is not stringent. Everyone knows going into highstreet law the remuneration is not good for the clients you represent. Admittedly, there should be more funding for legal aid but you cannot expect to earn that of a more commercial nature. Further, the UK system of law is one of the best the world has ever seen.

During my divorce my solicitor told I'd need a barrister for a day in court. They told me it would cost between £3,500 to £5,000 for the day ffs! They''ll get no sympathy for me. Most are vastly over paid already. Get the rich ones to subsidise the lower paid ones.
Private practise barristers, such as those dealing with divorce cases, are not the same people who specialise in criminal defence. Just because they are both called barristers, doesn't mean they do the same thing, in the same way that some doctors are brain surgeons and some are paediatricians. Criminal defence barristers are the ones who are walking out, and they really are very badly paid for the work they do - very often below minimum wage.
Family law pays very different to criminal law. And by the way, there’s a note for you on your desk tomorrow. You’re going to have your wages reduced to subsidise the people in your company who earn less than you. I’m sure you’re fine with that though
so you never watched the footage then?
@@Muggles87 everyone in the armed forces should get paid more because they serve 24/7 ,365 . Well below minimum wage. Can't these barristers do any other legal work to supplement their pay ?.
@@jablot5054 rubbish, of course armed forces personnel don't serve 24/7/365, they go on deployment for maybe a couple of months then get a couple of months back at home.
In what spare time do you think barristers might be able to do additional work to supplement their income? They're already working 10-12 hour days in a very mentally demanding job. There's a backlog of 60,000 court cases for the profession to work through at present. It already takes years for cases to come to trial. If criminal defence barristers start finding other things to do (and some already are) it'll make the backlog even worse and take even longer for cases to come to trial. Witnesses will forget details and criminals will walk free due to a lack of solid evidence
So where does all the money go?
I just got a bill for £13000 and the defendants bill must be close to the same and no where near court yet.
Increase the pay for the juniors, not for the rest of them - They already get paid way more than the national average.

Lawers, Barristers=Liars.
😂😂
The workers this country rely on earn minimum wage, they never strike, just get on with it. Then you have these barristers earning well over £100 an hr complaining about pay. Jeez
Did you watch the video? If you you'd see the low salary is for junior barristers who earn on average below minimum wage per hour and are the people who handle a majority of legal aid cases. Yes the data shows that wages spikes up a few years in as criminal barrister but clearly the point is that people are not able to/disuade from persevering when other areas of law are much better paid which represents an issue for our criminal justice system as it relies on legal aid lawyers. So the key distinction for anyone confused is that these are junior barristers working in criminal law who are getting paid peanuts, non junior barristers and those not in criminal law do earn a hefty chunk of dough tho
@@davidy9879 so the answer would be for them to move into corporate law when they have the experience. Teachers don't get paid for prep work. I don't get paid for being on standby 24/7 365 days a year. Plumbers don't get paid to travel 2.hours a day..

Oh the poor barristers, I've heard tales of their abject poverty and I cry myself to sleep, how can we help these stricken victims?
If we all sue our nearest & dearest over trivialities we can help. Why have a peaceful family life when you can enrich a divorce lawyer instead? 🤔
Why are you being sarcastic about a very real issue?
Don't confuse people paying for lawyers privately versus government-funded lawyers for legal cases where people can't afford to pay for effective representation. If you're a wealthy person with a contractual dispute or wanting to get divorced and get the best deal, then you tend to spend money on a lawyer, and those lawyers can earn a lot of money. But if you are an ordinary person who has - for example - been accused of a crime due to mistaken identity, or someone has made an allegation about how you treat one of your children, then you absolutely need an adequate defence. Don't come back to me with the 'no smoke without fire' claim: I'm not a lawyer, but I've dealt with many lawyers and people who've been involved in legal cases as well as my own. Sometimes entirely innocent people find themselves having to defend themselves against allegations that are not true, or are a misconstrued version of reality. Or if a crime has been committed against you, you want the state to make every effort to convict the person who did it. But if the government-funded lawyers are paid so little, that means very little time goes into either preparing the defence, or preparing the prosecution case, and that inevitably results in massive injustices, either people not being convicted of crimes for which they are guilty, or innocent people going to jail because their defence was inadequate.
To give you an example, I was a juror on a case where a pub manager was charged with 18 counts of theft from a pub. On the face of it it seemed likely the evidence would be so overwhelming that it was hardly worth having a trial. but the defence barrister had not done an adequate job of analysing the evidence at all, and I spotted a transaction on the bank statement that was not accounted for. It appeared that neither the prosecution nor defence counsel had spotted it, but upon investigation, it led to us being required to formally acquit her of 13 of the 18 charges. That led to us realising that they didn't know if any money was actually missing at all, as well as other clues pointing to her being poor at managing money rather than being dishonest, and so we acquitted her of the remaining charges. The whole case was poorly put together and badly analysed. That was poor quality justice and it was only by a thread that she was not convicted, which would have been an injustice and unnecessary cost to the taxpayer of her going to prison.
My god striking over £500 per hour
They are a bunch of nonce protectors, bunch of weirdos🤣🤣🤭🤭
Did you watch the video?
Lol you obviously haven’t got a clue. The courts are being defunded making it harder to take the government to task when it breaks the law which with this Tory government is a regular occurrence. And with no legal protections there’s nothing stopping the government forcing you to work like a slave and pocketing your wages to be spent on tree houses and wall paper.
@@charlieminaj2 those ‘nonce protectors’ ensure we have a fair trial, so the innocent walk free and the guilty are convicted. You are beyond ignorant if you think their purpose is to protect paedophiles.

Ah yes, the poor hard-done-by Barristers ... my heart fucking bleeds.

To be fair theres a massive difference between those private Barristers that deal with divorce and law suits and the like that charge several grand for a days work and the Barristers that defend people accused of crimes, who are salaried and make like 40k/year
just the typical bell end who knows nothing about the facts but makes a judgment on his very very limited knowledge.
Do they get the wigs for free when they graduate law school?
still they have to give ten percent to a Clerk.
So a Junior Prosecuting Barrister gets around £45 a day! for 10 years exp! a median income of £12K. The UK Government brags about it's legal system but this is how it treats it's workers in it. If a Junior Barrister gets this much, imagine the wage of a junior paralegal!
Meanwhile in the NHS we have to fight tooth and nail with the salary department just to get our actual normal wage, never mind a pay rise. This is the fourth month in a row getting wages shorted, £500... £300... and it happens to a massive amount of staff. The response you get is, we aren't able to give you the money back until next month... It's the most backward organisation I've ever seen.
Striking is the best option
Engineered lack and obsolescence will follow ....harder and harder they work you and the harder and harder they make it for you to make the ends -your labour's meet your needs.......but remember your governors kind promises ....lies cloaked in promises that never come to fruition. And remember we are in it together ! the virus makers are also the virus.
Some people managing the supply chain of the NHS are completely and utterly wasting tax payers money. When I worked in the distribution department everything anyone bought had to be audited including large quantities of coloured flags and other frivolities unrelated to saving peoples lives.
Then you need to grow a set and go on strike if you're not happy. I see all sorts of people complaining about NHS staff being underpaid yet I see them doing nothing about it
@@netcald991 it's not as simple as that in the NHS, we're professionally bound to not just 'walk out' and go on strike because it's seen as negligence towards patients. These things are suppose to be organised through unions in the NHS to give prior warning of a strike and to organise it but the unions do nothing, they're all in each others pockets.
How much do criminal barristers make UK?
Qualified barristers in private practice with around five years' experience can earn anything from around £50,000 to £200,000. For those with over ten years' experience, earnings can range from £65,000 to £1,000,000.
But private practice is very very different to criminal defence, where they are often paid a fixed fee through Legal Aid (and sometimes aren't actually paid at all)
What an ignorant comment 🤦♂️
These people defend the public in criminal cases, convict violent criminals, the whole core of our justice system would collapse without them.
Criminal barristers working on legal aid funded cases can expect to earn around 16-20,000 in the first couple o years from that work, if they’re working themselves into the ground, plus whatever else they might be able to pick up in their chambers. If you’re good and you start being instructed privately, then the big bucks start to kick in.

Then £50 for a court appearance with 8 hours prep. They are not money hungry as they would have gone private practice. Fair pay is required. The don't get a salary but are actually self employed
I did three years as a volunteer in a prison and saw the terrible work of the barristers and solicitors locking up innocent people up due to poor representation. One lady is currently doing 24 years for murder yet innocent and yet was not even at the murder yet the prosecution the judge and the defence barrister all ignoring the evidence managed to convict her. This case is the work of the top QC barristers in the UK. Another lady convicted for insider dealing found the judge and barristers simply helped out the FCA without evidence (using missing evidence) to convict her. The judge did not understand the technical details of the case as insider dealing cases are few and far between...the lady I can assure you was innocent. The barristers on legal aid since funding cuts have not been doing their cases and instead taking cases but not representing their clients properly, hiding behind cost cuts of the legal aid system and some even tweet it on their twitter accounts. Barristers and solicitors should simply have protested in the court rooms stating clearly they could not represent their client due to funding and pay issues which would have been instantly resolved otherwise all case law would have stopped. Instead they took to twitter and other methods like relying on newspaper coverage of cases to convict the innocent by influencing juries before the trial. Magistrates are not legally trained so will put people into prison if they do not like something about them, perhaps a nicer person then they are!!! Magistrates are needy people who do this job unpaid but their motivation is to feel powerful in the community. The general tax paying public just do not understand how unsafe it is to live in modern Britain. CPS are putting cases forward with no validated evidence due to I assume the cost of validating evidence and these cases should never have been put in front of any judge...and of course the jury will go with the story and convict as the drama plays out. Please pray for justice in the UK.
I think Justice is for the rich in U.K..

I mean you don't even fight for the people you are supposedly meant to fight for, so.... You know.
Its called serving your time. But unlike tradesmen etc. They will end up earning a fortune. Never met a poor lawyer in my life.
There are plenty
They only earn a fortune if they move away from criminal defence work and go into private practise. Even fully qualified and experienced barristers fighting cases funded by Legal Aid (IE anyone who cannot afford to pay for their own defence, which is the majority of people) are paid a pittance for the work they do. Often below minimum wage
@Dom You haven't got the faintest idea and you know it.
They live in poor areas of Rochdale or Rotherham ... Yeah right ....
@Dom they often get a lot less than £9.50/hour for criminal defence work. For example, the set fee for a pre-trial hearing is £126. Including preparation, commuting to court, meeting with the client, attending the hearing, and writing up the result that can easily represent 10-12 hours work. Out of that £126, travel expenses, admin fees, Chambers fees etc need to be paid which leaves about £50 take-home pay for that 10-12 hours' work. If you do all the prep for a trial but then can't attend because, for example, you get listed by the courts to appear in two places at the same time (which happens a lot) and another barrister steps in to take the case, you get paid zero for your preparation work. Also, any fees due are not paid until the conclusion of the trial, which can be several years after the work has been done.

Good point, yes it does seem those who are striking and wanted to go on strike are in professions that already pay well above average salaries. A pattern is emerging here. The gap between the haves and have nots is getting wider, its being planned and its very sinister. Thats how it looks to me anyway.
We've got to the point we have mo savings and simply can't afford to even strike about wages.
The criminal law barristers are the ones striking, and they earn only £12,200 a year, as the report made clear.
Did you flick through the Daily Mail with a blindfold on to get that quotation?
Because cleaners, waitresses and labourers are easily replaced with foreign labour. Most of these jobs positions are filled with foreigners they can’t afford to strike
I agree that workers should strike if they don't earn enough to live on, but how come if barristers only earn £46 for a court hearing which might last all day, does hiring a barrister for a divorce final hearing cost £8000 per day?
It's like nurses; government pay ain't too good. So most work private or agency too and earn small fortunes. The private work must be drying up and they can't afford the payments on their jags anymore.
Because legal aid will only pay a criminal barrister £46 for a day in court. A barrister practicing family law and working privately can charge whatever they like and whatever the market will bear
Legal aid is like the NHS. It's a welfare system to help the poor by paying for highly educated professional expert services. That is what's not being paid, leading to this issue. Private barristers in other areas of law aren't affected, and are not striking (although many are supporting their colleagues' strikes because they know how hard they work and for so little)
If someone offered my £46.50 for a day’s work i would tell them where to shove it!
The people of Britain need to realise that they serve the Crown not the people. They have a vested interest in making sure we common folk learn the lesson that we are trash to be dictated to by morons. The Crown courts must cease and be got rid of and we can then establish a peoples court. Lead by the people, monitored by the people and tried by the people. A highly skilled footballer is a rare commodity and his ability is rewarded very very highly the higher his skill the more he will be paid , however in return he is expected to perform for that pay and if he does his club can earn sometimes hundreds of millions a season from him in terms of the clubs own commercial success . Unfortunately that is the way things are in the sports world especially the worlds most popular sport - football .
So why are many clubs in debt? Way before covid. Why do players get tired after 90 mins with a rest half way? When other women and men in other sports play and compete for way longer? Where is the passion in football from the players? Many just knock a ball around and waste time.

I’ve studied law since I was 16, I’m 26 now and have a degree etc. I had to stop my LPC because I couldn’t afford the £13k fees (not like a student loan). I can’t even get a simply paralegal job or legal assistant role because they just want somebody who’s done the exact same role for years, when you don’t actually need a law degree for those roles. I’ve wasted years and thousands and thousands all for the system to say ‘fuck you’ basically. Government have my money and I have to work in a Shiite customer service job for 17.5k a year.
I wish I was being paid 17.5k! People want for nothing these days and expect to be paid handsomely for no good reason!
@@mrcoiganable2988 Why what are you being paid? I work damn hard and shouldn't have to live off £1,200 a month when my rent is £700. Asking for a decent wage is not wanting for nothing. Do you enjoy your weekend or days off work also? Becuase back in the day when that wasn't a right i'm sure some people thought that was wanting for nothing also.. The fact that you think under minimum wage or under is good especially with the cost of living is delusional. I also pay tax and have paid thousands in fees which all have which have gone back into society, and if you're receiving less than that a year do you even work or work sufficient hours? Because if that's the case then i contribute to your living.

Funny how they only stated the wages during first 3 years.. which is basically trainee/apprentice wage.. i guarantee you the head barristers are on 50k+ a year
It said they have 10 years experience. Surely someone with 10 years experience in a field should be earning well above minimum wage...
The regular barristers are on 50k+ a year the heads are on upwards of 100,000-250,000 depending on the firm
You must feckin joking I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE 10k per day in court
You think you can live on £12,200 a year? It's less than minimum wage, requires extensive education and continuous learning
trainee/apprentices are called pupils. Juniors have completed their 2 year pupilage, 1 or 2 year post-grad qualification, 3 year university degree. £12k is a joke and you know it.
Austerity is coming back to bite
This is a joke ... right ? Who would employ a barrister from a council estate with no qualifications ? That’s weird ...

I don't trust the media. Yeah some trials take an 8 hour day, but if the client is pleading guilty it only takes like half an hour, it which case the barrister is getting more per hour. The average case time is the important factor.
No - that is the duration of the TRIAL. What about the endless days/weeks of reading for the case in their own time at night when they could be with their families? The barristers get dumped with endless paperwork to read and sift through outside of being in court.

An honest days pay for an honest days work.
I do agree but to date I have not encountered one solicitor or barrister who has come up to the mark.....the lies which they have told showed me that they are representative of white collar crime.
