    I have several guitars in my collection with various Seymour-Duncan pickups in them. HUGE respect for using an Epiphone Les Paul for this demo! Usually, companies use Gibsons to demo pickups. Thank you for using a guitar most of us can afford!

      I’ve been using Duncans for 30 years, and I worked music retail for 15 years, installed hundreds of Duncans, and I cannot tell one of these clips from the other (so far on three different speakers). Having said that, if I were to blind play test these I’d like to think that there might be a feel and response difference. I’ve gone from a JB to a Custom 5 and a 59 to a WLH and felt differences “behind the wheel.”
      I do miss when Duncan used to list the resonant peak frequencies, as that was more helpful to me choosing pickups (and selling pickups) than DC resistance.

      I could hear differences the whole lotta humbuckers were much warmer and rounder . More nasal and compressed. Not as open or clear as the others. It would be much easier to hear the inferences if we were just given the guitar without a baking track. It would also be easier to hear the inference if the guitar was not drenched in reverb. The clips also need to be shorter. You need to hear all 3 positions heard back to back . First bridge pickup clips then middle than neck. Whole lotta humbickers and pearly gates are very different pickups

      @Shaun Ashley these pickups are not identical in spec or material. Just because these clips might sound identical to some doss not mean the pickups are the same . They would not be able to get any with that all a person needs to do is take output readings of these pickups and take gauss readings of the magnet to prove they are not identical . These sets of pickups have been taken apart and examined by people who mod their pickups and the materials and specs are different. The idea that these pickups are all identical and just have different names is silly and there is no evidence to back up this claim

      Installed a set of whole lotta humbuckers in my 58 reissue les paul and they are fantastic . The guitar now sounds alot like the tone page was getting with his early 70s red les deluxe in the late 80s and 90s . That red les paul had the custom shop version of the whole lotta humbuckers and it was basically pages number 1 guitar on the 88 outrider tour and the 93 Japan tour with Coverdale. His tone was always fatter more raw and more aggressive when he played that guitar. His Heaviest guitar tone came from 88 to 93 when he seemed to favor the red les paul over his others these pickups were pushing his amp harder than his other guitars with vintage gibsons . His tone would get brighter and cleaner when he would strap on number 1 or number 2 . These pickups are killer. They do a good zeppelin at earls court 1975 tone as well .. The custombuckers in the R8 were really nice . They were super clear and open but they were very low output and I wanted my R8 to be a hard rock machine and the whole lotta humbuckers Gave me the extra juice and I did gave to sacrifice a little clarity for the extra output but I did not lose much clarity. The whole lotta himbuckers stay surprisingly clear for a hotter pickups . Most pickups lose clarity and openess with WLH levels of output but the WLH strike the perfect balance of output and clarity.

    In a les paul? The Duncan Pearly Gate in the neck, yes! A great NECK PUP! But in the bridge the Dimarzio DP100 Super Distortion is the reining king and has always been since its creation in the 70's! it is the sound of 70's and 80's rock! everyone who was somebody back then used it to record their hit rock tunes! Alot of pups sound good in the Bridge of a Les Paul but whenever i hear the Super Distortion in the bridge it always blows the others away, always! Unless your going for strictly blues tones when it comes to a Les Paul with that super-charged hot 70's-80's hard rock attitude the Dimarzio DP100 Rules them all! and nothing gets a crowd jacked-up as fast as a Les Paul w/Dimarzio DP100's plugged into a Marshall.

      It will chug better than most Paf types .. they do it surprisingly well for a pickup that is not geared for that music . They do have a bold low end and low midrange for a PAF type but it's still got a little bit of that spongy PAF bottom end . They definitely do some nice fat palm muted riffs . Again they chug better than PAF pickups normally do . I think the A5 mag they use is slightly degaussed so it won't chug like a custom 5 would.

    what would happen if i added a cover to my pickups? by cover i mean going out of my way and inserting some 3rd party materials on top of it, just for aesthetic reasons... would the quality of the already inserted materials inside the pickups be altered sonically in any way??

    • @alexstixx
      @alexstixx 2 роки тому +2

      It depends on the ferromagnetic properties of the cover material. Even plastic has some capacitance, and most metals have ferromagnetism. The impact is usually less high end, an FFT graph of the difference would show a falloff after like 1-2khz. Uncovered humbuckers will sound "brighter" due to the increased db in the higher frequencies. Note: this is only true of materials that will alter the electromagnetic field. If it is not ferromagnetic, it should have minimal impact on the frequency response.

    • @teacuppermike2568
      @teacuppermike2568 3 роки тому +1

      I think that depends more on the amp and speaker than the pickup, but a good pickup will sound good in almost any setting.
      I haven’t played a Blues Jr but generally, the thing I like about a small tube amp is that you can push them and get nice breakup at manageable levels. Depending on the chassis, speaker, and transformer, maybe the bass response isn’t as tight, etc. The great thing about the internet is you can listen to a dozen other guitarists play an amp you want to get or already have, and get a rough idea of what to do (or what not to do).
      I hate to assume but if you have a Blues Jr, I’d like to think that you’re primarily playing Blues Rock or Classic Rock, and I can tell you from experience that you will most likely notice a difference with an upgraded set of pickups. I once had an Epiphone Sheraton II that played great but sounded muddy plugged in. I put a pair of Duncan 59s in it, and they made that guitar come alive. Having said that, I once had an alder body Tele copy with Artec pickups (Chinese made, I believe) that sounded great.

      With these particular sets yes . All 3 are overwound Paf types. They are designed to push the amp harder to overdrive the amp . These pickups were designed when drive pedals and 2 channel amp were not really a thing. These 3 sets are at their best when they ate driving a cranked amp . If you using a pedal or 2 channel amp then you might want less aggressive pickups like a seth lover or antiquity. Hitting the front end of an amp with pickups like these and then turning the map down defeats the design purpose of these sets . The WLH and Pearlies can sound very bright and fizzy at low volume. You need to turn up a bit to get the full potential out of these 3 sets.

I can hear the tonal difference in string gauge as well as tonal difference in pickups when the amp is set correctly and tunning is also set ( drop tuning etc)
