作詞者弗雷德里克．維特利（Frederick Weatherly，1848 ─ 1929），著名英國作家，亦是一名律師，一生為超過三千首歌曲作詞，代表作有 Londonderry air〈倫敦德里小調〉、The Holy City〈聖城頌〉等。此作品原為維特利在 1910 年痛失愛子及父親後寫下的詩歌 Danny Boy〈丹尼男孩〉，1913 年收到旅居美國的兄嫂寄來〈倫敦德里小調〉樂譜，便合譜成這首廣受歡迎的歌曲。
編曲者鮑伯．契考特（Bob Chilcott，1955 ─ ），英國當代知名作曲家、指揮家。曾為倫敦國王學院合唱學者且擔任國王歌手（The King’s Singers）團員長達 12 年，現為 BBC Singer 客座指揮。作品類型豐富，代表作有兒童合唱曲 Can You hear me〈聞吾聲否〉、The Angry Planet〈發怒的星球〉，宗教歌曲 Salisbury Vespers、St. John Passion 等。
鋼琴以空靈的和聲揭開序幕，遠望遼闊山景，思念油然而生。首段女聲緩緩傾訴母親對孩兒丹尼的思念，接著加入男聲，和聲逐漸開展，繪成夏日草原及冬日寂靜。鋼琴時而靜止，時而泛起波瀾，宛若詩人心中深沉的浮動。
次段樂聲轉弱，靜寂簡單的鋼琴，伴隨著歌曲旋律的輕聲齊唱，悄言天人永隔的悲傷。生死闊別的情緒愈增濃厚，和聲乘勢展開，「你會俯身傾訴對我的愛」進入全曲最高潮，隨後高低聲部交錯唱出「直至我倆重逢」情緒回歸沉靜。鋼琴呼應開頭，再現空靈的氛圍，深摯的情意隨著哼鳴在空氣中飄散。
