The saddest part of youtube. The mindless channels get all the subscribers and treats. Where as the informative channels have to work really hard to get by.

The Hentai Man Agreed, but channels that regularly get more views I.E. CaseyNeistat, pew die pie, and Good Mythical Morning just to name a few... They are making enough money for their creators to focus solely on youtube videos for income.

the early stages of the war, especially in VA....it is a metaphor as the army of northern VA and Confederate forces held their ground in places in northern VA. especially Fredericksburg.
though the rebel yell could have been used as a diversion for the forces the south had that were not even armed....the metaphor is more to show that the south fought back against the union well, especially considering that logistically, the south could not win this war. (ie, a blockade + limited supplies vs a fully industrialized nation.....the only really advantage the south had was more military academies and home advantage.....but even this alone isn't enough to win a war)
read into stonewall and Lee though, they were very dynamic generals that could win in losing situations...if you don't want to then that really is your loss for not looking into historical generals

Just to clear this up, the 3\5's compromise was put in place so that slaves in the south wouldn't count as a full citizen of those states so that the south would have less representation in congress. This was to give republicans more power over the south (all democrats) in congress. It wasn't about being racist it was about giving republicans a strategic advantage.

Franz Ferdinand Uh, just so ya know: when the 3/5 compromise was made there were no Republicans and Democrats. The 3/5 compromise was part of the Constitutional Convention that created this country. The Democrats were formed when Jefferson was president and the Republicans were formed in 1856.

"If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that." - Abraham Lincoln. Oversimplified indeed. The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in only seceding states, but left loyal slave owning states alone to continue the practice as well as northern captured confederate states. The proclamation was in effort to thwart any potential countries in Europe from joining the confederate cause which would have turned the tide in a much different direction. There was nothing inherently good about slavery, but no one at the time actually cared to free them except for a small handful of people.
That being said, the freeing of the slaves was the right thing to do, but we shouldn't conflate that freedom with Abraham Lincoln "good will" in this way.

    • @Sforschondetta
      @Sforschondetta 4 роки тому +4

This line is always taken out of context. Your bias ignores literally all other evidence on the contrary. Lincoln, as president couldn't abolish slavery. It was protected in the constitution. The EP was a technical loop hole by executive order. Lincoln, although temporary, had set a precedent. the EP freed only salves in federal territory because that was all he could legally do. Congress would eventually need to legislate the abolition of slavery-as it eventually did. Lincoln was personally against slavery his entire life and was the whole catalyst for the Republican party from which he was elected. His duty, as the President was to preserve the union during the war. Please take at least 10 minutes to educate yourself before you go regurgitating this nonsense on the internet.

If you can explain to me this missing context, it would certainly change my view of Lincoln. However, given this statement, the (admittedly disputed) "Root, hog, or die" story, and the fact that he never did anything about Illinois's anti-black laws, it seem to me that 'Southern sympathisers' have Lincoln's character measured quite fairly.

@John D Ruddy The GOP didn't leave the freed slaves because of big business (no idea where you got that info). They left because Reconstruction was legally grey at best then was finally determined to be unconstitutional and was forced to leave (there was also some political side dealing at the time that helped spur the removal of the Union troops.
I also wish you included at least one sentence to General George H. Thomas. He was a Virginian who was friends with Robert E. Lee and joined the Union. He defeated the entire Confederate army at Nashville and arguably helped save the war and Lincoln's election by salvaging the Atlanta campaign from Sherman's incompetence (Sherman is easily one of the worst officers of the Civil War).

The GOP didn’t leave the freed slaves during Reconstruction, the party left civil rights for African Americans in the early 20th century, when the parties swapped. One of the videos I found most interesting was Knowing Better’s Political Ships of Theseus. It talks about the party swap of the early half of the 20th century and shows how most politicians who were against civil rights switched to the Republican Party (most but not all).
As for Sherman being incompetent, that’s the first I’ve heard of it. I’ll do some research on it. I’ve been telling people how Sherman was a brutally efficient general for years, and I’d hate to be wrong about that.

@@rjhaney2614 Thanks for the video recommendation. I'll need to take a look at it. As for Sherman, he may have been brutally efficient, I can't really speak to that, but he did make some bad choices during Shiloh and during the Atlanta campaign that cost thousands of Union soldiers lives. He also had a nervous breakdown before Shiloh, and I believe he lost his son around the time of the Atlanta campaign. Regardless, he backstabbed Gen. Thomas on a few occasions (even though Thomas thought of them as the best of friends since they roomed together at West Point) and he was one to grandstand and seek glory as opposed to winning decisive battles. My opinion might be tainted since I'm a huge fan of General George H. Thomas, but I recommend you read up on him if you can.

It’s always nice to see a comment section on an informative civil war video not filled with lost causers.

I am an American, and a World History teacher. The American Civil War is so complex with family members often serving on both sides (brother vs brother). Most Confederate soldiers were NOT slave owners, and the idea of how the much the government should have control over what citizens should say or do was a big deal. Slavery was so important to the economics of the South, but was and is abhorrent. The South would not recover fully for a century and many relocated to the Industrial North or the new Western territories/states. Our country still struggles with how to process and evaluate something that had far reaching consequences, changes, and important lessons. (Not to mention the soldiers and civilians who died or were never the same afterward.) Thank you for your informational video and the many different aspects you shared of America's most tragic time in our country's short history. On a personal note, I love the accent while sharing U.S. history! We are a land of immigrants and the Irish played a big role in who were are today. :)

There's one massive error in this video. The civil rights movement was supported by the Republican party, not the Democrats. The democrats instituted the Jim Crowe laws, enforced segregation and fought hard against various equality bills such as the 13th and 15th amendments.
The whole Democrats are good, Republicans are bad idea only came about 20 years ago when the Democrats decided to try and change their image by laying claim to all the achievements of the Republican party, conveniently editing out the fact that the former Confederate states all voted strongly Democrat throughout the civil rights movement and only began to slowly lean Republican as popular racism started to die off.

Unfortunately my "Republican Party abandoned civil rights" line was a bit broad and thus painted the rest of the video as such. I've been trying to make it a little clearer in my Presidents of USA videos.

The political realignment happened when the Republicans employed the Southern Strategy during Nixon's campaign.

smh facepalm. You realize the parties switched right?
Ever heard of Barry Goldwater getting the South in the 1964 election, cause he was against the 1964 civil rights act?

Michael Carranza LMAO. There was no sudden switch. That has been discredited many times. If that was true then all of those racists democrats would of switched republican. You know how many did? 1 I'm not going to bother typing out the other reasons why there was no mythical switch, it would take too long and it's easy for one self to just search and find out for themselves why it's not true. I can't believe people still buy that bullshit. The Democratic Party is the party of slavery, the KKK, Jim Crow. etc.. They still hold blacks on the plantation by making them dependent on welfare and government assistance because they are told they are victims. They won't tell them there truth that it's their culture and way of life keeping them down like having 70% of babies out of wedlock. The poverty rate for a 2 parent black family is 7%. The dem's won't tell them the truth because they need them relied on the government so they keep getting votes. The democrats have controlled the major cities since the 1960's and they haven't done anything for black people in the inner cities but make their situation worse. Blacks were more wealthy before the democrats took over their towns.
