@@OrixDalgrath This is everything schools want you to know about The Cold War for History class (where I live atleast), and this is what you need to know for the tests. Everyone knows the real Cold War was between polar bears and penguins. Took a while for them to get to each other and while they were on the way toward each other, a lot of them died. The polar bears met the penguins around Mauritania, Africa and they had quite a fight. Being smaller, the penguins knew they’d need to have more fighters than the polar bears. The polar bears had almost 5,000, and the penguins had around 17,000. Although the penguins had far more fighters, the polar bears were still bigger, stronger, and were beating the penguins like crazy, so the penguins improvised and made cannons, with big barriers all around them. This helped them a lot and started to kill a lot of the polar bears. The penguins then came in with a big B-52 and dropped lots of bombs. The penguins were able to win because of this, but although they started out with around 17,000 fighters, they ended with only about 600. It still goes down as one of the saddest days in animal history. Because of their bravery, we can now have these animals in our zoos because their war was settled and we no longer have to fear that the penguins will try to kill the polar bears or vice versa. Some zoo keepers though are still afraid that the polar bears will want to get back at the penguins. There are also some who have said that four penguins escaped, went to Madagascar by plane, then went to Africa, and then they stopped an evil octopus from making all penguins bad.
Yeah, it was one of the saddest days in history. My history teacher tried to cover it up and say it never happened. She even went as far as to say I was “crazy for actually thinking that” and that I “needed to go to a psych ward”. But I won’t let their fight be forgotten. The lives that were lost so Santa’s elves could have freedom and the penguins could also have magic to be able to fly a sleigh. The penguins got to once when Santa landed in Madagascar and a lion, hippo, giraffe, and zebra had to take Santa’s place and deliver presents. That was all the penguins wanted.

Funny how historians couldn't imagine a not tense situation in the world, that they though world politics would come to an end. My generation can barely imagine tension as high as during the cold war. How lucky we are.
so they used other countries as their battle fields.million of people were killed only to prove who is better.while people in their own countries were enjoying their lifes drinking and clubbing.
they used other countries so ONLY millios would die and their would still be a world... if they hadnt then you wouldnt be here nor anybody for that matter

Mattyboy He even said we "lost" the Vietnam war, as if it were a military defeat. When in fact we just lost to much public support. I was cringing when he said we lost to Northern Vietnam, lol, cause we kicked their ass.
jacobdot456 Emmm, no. We lost because we didn't complete our objective of keeping North Vietnam from forcing Communism on the South. Like in the Winter War in 1942 or Afghanistan in the 70s for the Soviets, they didn't successfully invade Finland or Afghanistan so they failed their mission. We lost Vietnam as the Ruskies lost in Afghanistan.
Disinformation in this video: 5:05 Chile didn't actually vote for communism. Allende got 35% of the vote. 4:55 North Vietnam and the US signed a peace treaty. 6:26 Everyone armed the Mujahideen, but the main support came from Pakistan, another nuclear power.
1) No in everywhere someone needs to get more than 50% of the votes to be elected. There is simple majority too, that is, someone get elected by having most of the votes without needing to be more than 50% of the overall. 2) USA lost Vietnam war. Signing a peace treaty means that their objective failed. 3) Hillary Clinton stated that USA founded them to fight agaisnt the soviets and by the time she said it, she was an authority in the USA.
Subliminal actually, the treaty’s terms were status quo ante bellum, or white peace, which is a defensive victory. Unfortunately the North violated the peace very soon afterwards.
Pixelated Viking thats really the same thing man. I know youre just gonna say Pakistan made the mujahedeen, they did, but it was all funded by America. Pakistan didnt really have any reason to create the mujahedeen.
Good work! I was slightly surprised that the economic role of the Chernobyl NPP disaster of April 1986 wasn't mentioned. That single event cost the USSR approximately 18 billion rubles (which were at parity with the US dollar), and the "fallout," no pun intended, could be argued as one of the causes of the collapse of the Union. Not trying to start a fight or debate here, I just find the timing of the disaster, against everything else happening at the time, to be fascinating.
The soviets reached the moon first. The USA got the first *man* to the moon. The soviets were the first to get to the moon. The Soviets had the first sattelite, first animal in space, first man in space, first orbit, and first lunar landing. USA has first man on the moon... and that's it.
Alan833Gaming The USA sure seemed to think so. We had a single, centrally planned, government run agency devoted to the task, and we ramped up spending up to the our moon landing, then ramped it down again afterwards. The Soviets, on the other hand, had a whole bunch of independent competing organizations all competing for funding, with no overall central plan, so they didn't seem to care as much. Though the structures each side used are ironic considering the larger scope of the debate around which the cold war was structured.
magnusorion0 The U.S also had the first successful probe on mars, first to reach Mercury, first to reach escape velocity and interstellar space. So it kinda balances itself out
Quantum Tunneller well, by then the Soviets/Russians had completely gutted their space program. Even now its a shell of its former self. The USA wasn't so much winning the space race as taking a victory lap at that point.
0:09 North Korea was no soviet republic. 0:50 I understand, that you want this map to be colorful, but still it´s not fully correct: Austria, Sweden, Svizzerland, Ireland and Yugoslavia were neutral. 1:36 Thats way better, however I think Cuba should be red and south africa blue. 6:33 Omg, you really did not withhold it :O You did a really awesome job at this video, it was great.
+The Hunt for Red October Actually North Korea was set up by the Soviet Union, and the reason for the collapse of NK's economy in the 1990s was because they no longer had the Soviets bankrolling them. As for Cuba, it was an American ally until July 1959, and that map is dated to 1959, so presumably he was just showing how things were immediately prior to the revolution. Also South Africa wasn't aligned to either side, so he is right to show them as neutral.
Theocook1 North Korea was and is a dictatorship, it was no "soviet republic", but socialist, just as for example East Germany. Only the members of the former Soviet Union were called soviet republics, not it´s allies. Okay, I agree on Cuba :) South Africa was especially because of its strict race distinction seen as an bastion against communism in africa, so the West clearly supported or at least tolerated its crimes.
Just taken another look at the map you were referring to with regard to North Korea. It's dated to 1945, at which point North Korea was not independent but under the occupation of the Soviet Army. That's why it's shown as part of the Soviet Union I think. As for South Africa, the west might have tolerated them due to the National Party's opposition to Communism, but I doubt they'd have ever referred to them as allies.
+Theocook1 Okay, North Korea was under occupation, therefore in my perception not part of the SU itself. Otherwise: Why is for example Japan not marked blue on the map? Nobody is perfect, this is no critique on the video, its just a detail we argue about, but still: This is not 100% coorect. Actually I don´t want to search for articles online just to give you a source, however I´m very sure to have heard that South Africa was this "bastion against communism". Maybe not an "ally", but clearly a power the US felt pleasant about.
Yugoslavia was under soviet command until 1948, when Tito said "NO" to Stalin about his takeover of Yugoslavia. After 1948 Yugoslavia was left by Soviets. So this map at 0:50 is correct because it is the year 1946.
What a wonderful synthesis of the Cold war and all the details around it! You’ve no idea how much my comprehension about this important event in history was clarified after watching carefully nearly 4 different times…. I actually made up to extract the prints of every scene and charted it out in graphic software so I could better memorize the installments within this topic... I also set in chronological order all these extracted prints along with the transcription of your narration, in for of text... God Bless you!
I'd like to see your opinion on the "end of History", I believe the stagnation of politics has led directly to what we have now, controversial and previously abhorrent ideals and extremist thinking coming forward due to a perceived hatred of "the same old politics". This and previously unforseen consequences of the cold war (Al Quaeda leading to ISIS, Arab Spring, Iraq war and the rise of Putin) is driving history further forward.
John D Ruddy thanks for the reply! I do feel that rather than the famous "end of History", what we have ended up with is a whole new era altogether, which is only now beginning to reveal itself in a more understandable and recognisable way. That is not to say it's any more pleasant than the horrors of the past but as a history lover (previously student also) it is fascinating and whatever happens I do feel blessed to live in such historically interesting times.
Great videos! For all the people demanding more videos and for Rud to upload them faster. You need to realize that he draws all of this, (computer animated or not), does all the research, commentates, and edits the video. I'm not sure if he was help with all this, either way, every video takes a very long time to make.
RudtheSpud Also, you think you can add more about Canada in these wars? In WWI for example, the war had a huge change on Canada and we finally became fully independent from Britain, because they no longer controlled our foreign affairs. Canada also got their own seat in the treaty of Versailles, instead of being represented by Britain. Idk if I just have a biased opinion from learning about the wars through Canadian school, but Canada did have a very huge importance. Particularly in The Battle of Vimy Ridge. The French had failed 3 times to try and capture Vimy Ridge, and they eventually gave up and let the Canadian troops have a shot at it. Led by Julian Byng, the Canadian force was able to swiftly take over Vimy Ridge with very little casualties on the first try. Again, not sure if this biased information, but it is accurate. So, please include my country, will ya? hahah
englandfootball8 Pretty sure if you speak the English language and have a basic comprehension understanding, you would be able to tell I said Canada became a fully independent nation including foreign affairs BECAUSE OF WWI Learn English or re more carefully before you open your mouth.
Fuck the wall, which he isn't gonna build anyway. He is talking about proxy wars, fought indirectly by backing different sides. Like the US and Russia are fighting right now in Syria.
Rsngamer And who is gonna conduct this investigation? Can't give it to a small country, not enough authority or resources for anyone to take their results seriously. And all the bigger countries have already aligned themselves with either the US or Russia. There is absolutely no way we are getting to the bottom of it. That is the problem, you really can't hold either of them accountable. Russia has nukes, but weak economy, so you can at least, occasionally, sanction them. The USA is practically invincible.
Thanks for this! My world history teacher in highschool was such a failure in teaching about the Cold War I never understood a single thing about this event.
+Wolfey The thing that is even more disconcerting is the fact that most people think communism and capitalism are government types. Just ask some people on the streets what they are going to say about the UssR. I mean it should be easy to determine a country...right? I don't think so ...find me a quote where Reagan assert that he bested the USSR ? Go on -I'll wait . USSR simply ended by series of internal problems caused by Mikhail relaxation of the totalitarianism program that kept the USSR glued ...The USA was simply a belligerent bystander .
Ussr didn't lose at all. There was a draw becouse nobody wanted for the world to end. Just becouse ussr failed to stay one after the war. Doesn't mean us won. Ussr ended after the cold war.

This documentary tries to be objective but it is partial. Before 1962 the US had already placed ICBMs on Turkey, then the Soviet Union placed hers on Cuba.

Little disappointment. Also, India was VERY rich, it had a lot of diamonds, gold and treasures, which, was taken by the Britain.

American Civil war.
and don't forget World War One.
This video defined my childhood. I remember watching it when I was around 10-11 years old, and it has never left me. I'll never forget about this essential video from my tweenhood. :D
And now I feel old! Hahaha
Funny how historians couldn't imagine a not tense situation in the world, that they though world politics would come to an end. My generation can barely imagine tension as high as during the cold war. How lucky we are.
Bcoz..its the world
Damn the Cold War is complex.

Yep, you said it. :D

It's spelled Al Qaeda
*After the end of World War II, the world was split into two -- East and West. This marked the beginning of the era called the Cold War.*

so they used other countries as their battle fields.million of people were killed only to prove who is better.while people in their own countries were enjoying their lifes drinking and clubbing.
they used other countries so ONLY millios would die and their would still be a world... if they hadnt then you wouldnt be here nor anybody for that matter

They are still doing it.

Conveniently left out our (UK) involvement in the Middle East and blame it all on the Americans. I like it :)
Mattyboy He even said we "lost" the Vietnam war, as if it were a military defeat. When in fact we just lost to much public support. I was cringing when he said we lost to Northern Vietnam, lol, cause we kicked their ass.
Mmmm nope... you lost.
jacobdot456 Emmm, no. We lost because we didn't complete our objective of keeping North Vietnam from forcing Communism on the South. Like in the Winter War in 1942 or Afghanistan in the 70s for the Soviets, they didn't successfully invade Finland or Afghanistan so they failed their mission. We lost Vietnam as the Ruskies lost in Afghanistan.
jacobdot456
Mmmm nope... you still LOST!
audio01 Yea and the Earth's flat
Disinformation in this video:
5:05 Chile didn't actually vote for communism.
Subliminal the vietnam war was a political defeat for the US rather than a military defeat
Subliminal the US never created the Mujahideen. They just funded itm
Thank u so much for this video. Really good🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Me: Can I get some bacon from the bay of pigs

The soviets reached the moon first. The USA got the first *man* to the moon. The soviets were the first to get to the moon. The Soviets had the first sattelite, first animal in space, first man in space, first orbit, and first lunar landing. USA has first man on the moon... and that's it.
still more significant than all those
Alan833Gaming The USA sure seemed to think so.
The soviet also landed probes on venus..
magnusorion0 The U.S also had the first successful probe on mars, first to reach Mercury, first to reach escape velocity and interstellar space. So it kinda balances itself out
Quantum Tunneller well, by then the Soviets/Russians had completely gutted their space program. Even now its a shell of its former self. The USA wasn't so much winning the space race as taking a victory lap at that point.
If that's Bond and Snake at 0:35, then that would be an awesome team up
NintendoWolf Nah, it's Bond and MASON, GET ON THE TURRET!!!!!!!!
This was really helpful, since I had to do a essay about it. ☺️
6:33 Omg, you really did not withhold it :O
You did a really awesome job at this video, it was great.
Okay, I agree on Cuba :)
South Africa was especially because of its strict race distinction seen as an bastion against communism in africa, so the West clearly supported or at least tolerated its crimes.
After the end of World War II, the world was split into two; East and West.
This marked the beginning of the era known as the Cold War

hey john i would love it if you did the Korean war as a full video after the Vietnam war
God Bless you!

bro.. :((
I'd like to see your opinion on the "end of History", I believe the stagnation of politics has led directly to what we have now, controversial and previously abhorrent ideals and extremist thinking coming forward due to a perceived hatred of "the same old politics". This and previously unforseen consequences of the cold war (Al Quaeda leading to ISIS, Arab Spring, Iraq war and the rise of Putin) is driving history further forward.
It is indeed. I agree with you there! The swamp is stagnant...
John D Ruddy thanks for the reply! I do feel that rather than the famous "end of History", what we have ended up with is a whole new era altogether, which is only now beginning to reveal itself in a more understandable and recognisable way. That is not to say it's any more pleasant than the horrors of the past but as a history lover (previously student also) it is fascinating and whatever happens I do feel blessed to live in such historically interesting times.
kaledmasterme none of these events today compare to what we were dealing with back then. We just have way more media coverage

yup, it's all me! not to mention the down time after needed to clear my head and move onto the next project :D thanks for understanding ;)
btw THIS IS MY FAVOURITEST COMMENT EVERRRRRRR!!!
RudtheSpud thanks!!!
So, please include my country, will ya? hahah
englandfootball8 Pretty sure if you speak the English language and have a basic comprehension understanding, you would be able to tell I said Canada became a fully independent nation including foreign affairs BECAUSE OF WWI
Learn English or re more carefully before you open your mouth.
I can see why they are saying that now is a new cold war

Rsngamer
And who is gonna conduct this investigation?
Can't give it to a small country, not enough authority or resources for anyone to take their results seriously.
And all the bigger countries have already aligned themselves with either the US or Russia.
There is absolutely no way we are getting to the bottom of it.
That is the problem, you really can't hold either of them accountable.
Russia has nukes, but weak economy, so you can at least, occasionally, sanction them.
The USA is practically invincible.

Why cant people differentiate between communsim and socialism, goddamnit.
+Wolfey The thing that is even more disconcerting is the fact that most people think communism and
capitalism are government types. Just ask some people on the streets what they are going to say about the UssR.
I mean it should be easy to determine a country...right? For example:
UssR 1950/ Government type: Socialism / Rulership: Dictatorship / Economy type: Communism
USA / Government type: Federalism / Rulership: Republic / Economy type: Capitalism
+Wysey isn't the US government's rulership a republic?
+Wysey also, the Founding Fathers hated the idea of democracy
+Eren Jaeger In fact, they actually attempted to reinstall a government much similar to the one Britian had used to control the 13 colonies.
in this case, it is the same
You know you have a serious problem when you stay up late scrolling through UA-cam and you hit the bottom page of the home section, and this is what’s recommended...

Ussr didn't lose at all. There was a draw becouse nobody wanted for the world to end. Just becouse ussr failed to stay one after the war. Doesn't mean us won. Ussr ended after the cold war.

Could you make one about stuff we in the West are unaware of? Like the history of China, India, Meso-America etc
***** It's not very thoroughly taught in our schools.
***** I currently attend one of the finest high-schools in the western half of North Carolina, yet there lies in my mind a massive gap in my knowledge of Indian history between the founding of the first Indus river valley civilizations and the rise of the Mughal Empire, so, I don't know what to tell you.
***** India had history of Indus Civilization, several empires (Maurya, Mughal, etc) and being a colony of Britain and the aftermath of the colony which brings us to the Kasmir Conflict which is still happening. Little disappointment.
Also, India was VERY rich, it had a lot of diamonds, gold and treasures, which, was taken by the Britain.
***** You talk about it like it is awful to teach something like that.
Not we in the west, you in the west.
I’ll make this even shorter in just 7 words:
It was a war that was cold
