Dick Oatts has always been the "Port in the storm" for all sax players who are new to NYC, and have no connections or credits. He has always been a friend to the friendless, always finding a way to help a guy out trying to make it in the big city. He and Jerry Dogian put me on gigs and had never heard me play. Talk about guts. But after hearing this interview I see why they do it.I think that's what Thad taught them. Unfortunately most sax players are not very nice people and it is a delight when you meet someone like Dick. He will always have great karma.
Amazing how humble this monster of a musician is. Probably one of the reasons why is so good.
Dick has such class!...and is such a great alto player!...interviewer is cool too!
Absolutely loved this interview!!!

When you have your own you are confident . Insecurities are what make most sax player obnoxious- too much competition.
got to study with him for a few years around 2000. chill guy and really helped my sound, composition, and playing.
Great guy, incredible musician!!!! One of the very best of the best!!!
