Sneak peek from John Powell's Inside the Track series, in which he shows how he wrote the soundtrack for DreamWorks ‘How To Train A Dragon‘.
Join us at Guillaume Tell Studios in Paris for our first series with John Powell. The renowned film composer describes how he typically embarks on a new project, referring to his work on the movie ‘How to Train Your Dragon’. Following a discussion about finding inspiration, his influences, and a modern workflow, he introduces the multi-track session of the film cue ‘Third Date’. Taking you through various parts of the record, he elaborates on the composition process, storyline vs. music, arrangement techniques, structure, contrast, samples vs. live recordings, optimal instrument ranges, and other musical aspects. He also comments on his work from more technical and emotional perspectives, discussing topics such as his studio setup, pre-mixing, tracking, distortion, ghostwriting, self-criticism, obsessing over details, seeking help, and the benefits of collaboration.

This guy is an absolute genius and How to Train your Dragon has to have one of the best soundtracks of any movie Ive seen.
Musical taste is inherently subjective.
Except the httyd soundtrack. It is objectively the greatest movie soundtrack ever written. If you disagree you are simply scientifically incorrect.
The Bourne Supremacy beats it

Also Antz and Chicken Run

The movies I have watched during my childhood years will never be the same without sir John Powell's musical composition. I really don't know how to express how I love his compositions XD
He is legendary. Almost all the movies that he's composed for were very memorable, impactful and to the point weaving beautifully into the story! He's a very very good composer!
When a film has lots of Show don't tell scenes like this, the soundtrack really can make or break the scene. So having the soundtrack telling the story and the characters showing it was a brilliant move.
Amazing how many big budget films completely fail at it
Yea most film doesn't utilize soundtracks as an integral part of the story but rather as a noise filler in the background
I cannot believe that loud trumpet swell was an accident haha, honestly I thought it was one of the most impressive parts of the cue
Such a massive fan of his music. A real legend and artist of movie music.
That trumpet player who messed up will remember that mistake for the rest of his life and it was a very fitting mistake. Love all the work that goes into his projects. So inspirational!
Super love John Powell, easily my favorite film composer of all time
I can't believe how lucky we are that this video exists. This is my favorite track from John Powell being discussed. So grateful.
even his voice sounds amazing
I fucking love this guys and his soundtracks. Just learned Romantic flight on the guitar, grew up listening to his songs but only after I got older that I could really appreciate the work behind the themes he wrote, especially on How to Train your Dragon. I'm sure other people can relate to that as well. And he looks like the type of guy everyone likes to have around lol.
This composition sounds so emotionally engaging, better than today’s music for sure.
It is todays music.
@@k84j1 the mainstream today's music i think what he meant
wow how amazing is to watch a genius work

John is a God
I was half expecting him to rick roll us
HE'S BRITISH ??????????????
John Powell is a freaking legend. He made all of my favorite songs in HTTYD Third Date, Where No One Goes, and Flying With Mother are my favorite tracks. Way to go man!
Don’t forget Test Drive! It’s so good! Gives me goosebumps everytime!
@@fenicearts9468 Hell yeah! Test Drive is really awesome too :D
@@kittyqveen3249 ehhhh, where no one goes sounds kind of autotuned, so it's a bit iffy. but the movie covers it up well
John Powell is awesome!
I can't stand with anyone who claims that the soundtrack of HTTYD is "Nah I've heard better". I'd literally punch 'em in the ear
john powell's music for how to train your dragon and ice age are just * chef's kiss *
I love the use of key changes! The metaphorical representation of themes throughout this series is very appealing and helps create emotional responses based on the ideas placed in our heads by the film. It does this very effectively. The transitions between key changes are difficult because they can screw up the present feeling of the piece but Powell does this very well.
his music makes me cried everytime i heard it in HTTYD
0:53 - 1:13 is absolutely stoic!

The music is so beautiful....
what Sibelius quote is he talking about at 5:58? anybody caught that?
John Powell acts like a high school band teacher
This man is a genius. He's got such an interesting, energetic style that I never get tired of. I need to study some of his scores
What’s the track he played in the beginning called
The Track he shows in this Video is called "Third Date" from How to train your Dragon 3
United 93 music literally gives tears
4:54 is great insight from John Powell. Shows he has no ego in the process!
I like him even more now.
Such a great video. His humble attitude to what is effectively a classical ballet is a delight. And he’s funny too. I’ve made a bunch of records over the years and his comment “grow up...” about losing something you love for better greater good couldn’t be more on the money.
God, this guy is the best music composer I've ever met, he created one of the best soundtracks ever
I saw John Powell thumpnail and decided "hey I want to hear his voice. His music is wonderful. Let's see how his voice would sound." and so I did. I'm happy that I actually recognised the soundtrack without reading the description. I love How to Train Your Dragon all of it, but The Hidden World made me really sad I actually cried watching it and for some reason I can't bring myself to like the Light Fury. So sorry for that.
I wish that Nine Realms and those similar bs would go away and there was at least a continuation for the "homecoming" 20min short film, with better story and art design than the "Race to the Egde" series.
But I'm glad that they visited hiccup, Astrid and the kids instead of just leaving each other forever
Third movie's writing is bad but the music is amazing.
Very Interesting Video. I love it.
Fantastic!! How do I watch the whole thing for free? Says I need to sign up as a pro member
5:30 so sweet part!
Nice👍

I'm so glad he did this behind the scenes! It's nice seeing how another composer I admire does things! He's so down to earth it's fantastic 😃
Brilliant 👌👍
