Wow! What a bunch of young whippersnappers we were! Not a gray hair in the band! Saxes: Joe Lovano, Kenny Garrett, Dick Oatts, Gary Pribeck, Gary Smulyan. Trombones: Earl McIntyre, Douglas Purviance, John Mosca, Ed Neumeister. French Horn: Stephanie Fauber. Trumpets: Tom Harrell, Earl Gardner, Joe Mosello, John Marshall. Piano: Jim McNeely. Bass: Dennis Irwin. Drums: Mel Lewis
Jim, what a great concert! I bought the original Smithsonian VHS and they had Marc Johnson listed on bass. Obviously thats Dennis on bass. Is there a back story? Last minute sub?
Bob Brookmeyer was a artist in residence at UMKC so he basically taught me how to play big band drums in 1987, how Mel approached it. We would be in the practice room, him yelling the chart out to me, where to set up and where to lay off.
Dick Oatts!!! Great and Inspiring playing as usual! He is a hero to countless sax players, to say the least! Thanks for sharing this video! Please add the background Info on this performance - where, when, who etc!
I love the Mel Lewis Band, now the Vanguard Orchestra. What a cast here, but the solo by Dick Oatts who is beautiful. Dick is a player that has his roots in Sonny Stitt and Coltrane and yet he's come up with own voice. Loved Dick's sound on the Berg Larsen mpc, had great edge, depth... Incredible player.. And Joey Lovano when he played Otto Link mpc, my favorite sound of Joes....
Yeah, man. What an awesome band they were at that time. Looks like this was shot around the same time as the Montreaux recording where they did Mintzer's arrangements of Herbie Hancock. 1980 I think.
Bob Brookmeyer était Directeur artistique de l'orchestre, après la disparition de Thad Jones mais il ne participait pas à ce concert à Montreux en 1980, par contre le bon pianiste-arrangeur de l'orchestre était Jim Mc Nilly
@@bassman4632 Well Mr. Bass, if y'all don't understand French use Google translation! The cats just sayin': BB was the artistic director of the band after Thad Jones passed away (N.B. actually after he left t direct the Danish Natinal jazz orch…)but he wasn't with the band for this concert in Montreux (Switzerland where da MFs speak French…) . On the other hand, the pianist arr. of the band was Jim McNeeley(spelling couldda been better!) .

Love you Jim! T Xiques was my roommate at Berklee!

Fantastic Band!!! Loved you guys!! I played Dolphin Dance when I was at The University of Akron. I also played several of Thad's charts.

I love how Mel integrated percussion into the whole ensemble. Great innovator! I played in jazz bands.

Owesome!
Dick rules! Thanks for sharing this.
In my opinion, one of the greatest big bands of all time.... Just listen to "All of Me" and tell otherwise.
Agreed. Definitely most musical.
This is amazing
Incredible performance by Mel and the band - beautiful
最高やーーーーーーーーー!!!!!!!!!!
Oh wow! that is gorgeous music-making by Dick Oats
Love the percussion intro, its just so unorthodox, its amazing. But then again, jazz is pretty much unorthodoxy in liquid form played through horns.
最高やー!
Mel was my favorite big band drummer. Very musical and used colors
Is it Kenny Garrett playing 2nd alto?
+Vladislav Psaruk yeah!
Yes, it is Kenny Garett.
god damn
That bass bone player though.. Even the guy at 1:17 was like woah.
良いソロだなぁ。
🎷🎶🌻👍
Bob does not play trombone on this video
Man, where did you find the video for this concert? I need to find where you can get the whole thing.
Chick corea steps is the song. Type it in youll find it
Live at the Smithsonian is the DVD. Hard to find.
Mel Lewis And The Jazz Orchestra - Jazz At The Smithsonian
Someone needs a new neck cork. Great band.
nah. this could be a mouthpiece he borrowed for testing, which is a bit loose.
Hmm. I put some paper on my neck. How come I don't sound like that?
I used to wrap paper to make a seal I forgot that

1st.altoist Dick Oatts?
Dick is a "wicked" saxophonist - as in Creator-like.
Hi,
don't you think it is unfair to mention only the "stars" of the band? This is orchestra , in wich everyone counts.
Yes - if you’re going to illegally post music that isn’t yours you should at least name each player
Or let's just enjoy this video, and the fact that it's available for our eyes to see.
I don’t care who they are. No one does…
It looks like Smulyan in bari. Who’s on tenor 2?
Gary Pribek
1:44 the licc (almost)
djangowww congrats
Sorry, the sax soloist sounds off key.
apology accepted
you're nuts if you think he's off
That’s very funny. 99% of the saxophonists on the planet wish they sounded that “off key”.
